SEPTEMBER 1920
Wed. Sep. 1st. Bright and very warm till 2 in eve and clouded up then and rained around far off balance of eve but none here. Willie and Marion picked cotton today. I brought some tomatoes from field in morn and patched up chicken coops in eve.
Thu. 2nd. Cloudy and rained a slow rain here at 9 to 10 in morn and bright balance of day. Willie and Marion worked on fence on creek to stop hogs getting out in morn. Dud hauled in cotton at 11 and carried wagon to town for repairs in eve and left it there. I brought some tomatoes from field in a slow rain in morn.
Fri. 3rd. Bright but cloudy some most of day and no rain. Willie ringed all of his hogs but 4 early in morn and he and Marion picked cotton balance of day. I brought tomatoes from field in morn.
Sat. 4th. Bright and very warm and no rain near but lightning around at night. Willie and Marion drove Buck to town in morn and returned at 2 in eve. I brought tomatoes from field early in morn.
Sun. 5th. Bright and warm and no rain near. Marion drove Buck to Wiley's in morn. Bro Tom and his two little girls here today.
Mon. 6th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. Willie picked cotton. I carried some tomatoes and pepper to Lanehart's in morn. Marion came home from Wiley's in eve and brought Carmel and Buddy.
Tue. 7th. Bright and very warm in morn and a thunder cloud came up from SW at 5 in eve and we had a good shower with some wind and thunder till 6. Willie picked cotton today. I brought some tomatoes from field in morn.
Wed. 8th. Bright and warm all morn and a thunder cloud came up from SW at 1 1/2 in eve and we had a big rain till 2 1/2 - and needed too - and bright balance of eve. Dud took mules to town in morn and brought the wagon by 11 and hauled in cotton from Coon field by 12. Marion had fever today and Willie took Buddy to town in eve to meet his Papa. I hilled Irish potatoes in old garden in morn.
Thu. 9th. Bright most of day and no rain here but rained around some in eve with thunder. Dud and Wiley pulled and hauled in some corn today. Marion still in bed. Earl here today and he and Carmel drove Buck to town to Methodist church at night.
Fri. 10th. Bright and very warm and no rain in sight. Willie picked cotton in morn and he and Minnie drove Buck to Methodist church at night. I got okra from garden and tomatoes from field in morn.
Sat. 11th. Bright and very warm and no rain in sight. Willie and Carmel drove Sandy to town in morn and Carmel got this school. Dud and Wiley drove wagon to town to mill in morn and all returned in eve. I hilled Irish potatoes in new garden in morn. Marion and Nellie drove Buck to Methodist church in town at night.
Sun. 12th. Bright and very warm and no rain in sight. Willie and Minnie drove Sandy to Methodist church in town in morn. Cap D dined here and Gordon here too in eve.
Mon. 13th. Bright and very warm and no rain in sight. Dud and Wiley and hands picked cotton in Coon field and Willie picked in patch N of here today. Marion drove Buck to town in morn and returned in eve. Carmel began her school here today. Annie and Hattie came and here at night. I hilled turnips in new garden in morn.
Tue. 14th. Bright and very warm and no rain in sight. Dud and Wiley and hands picked cotton in Coon field and Willie picked in his cotton. I hilled turnips in new garden and brought tomatoes from field in morn.
Wed. 15th. Bright and very warm and dry and no rain in sight. Dud and Wiley and hands picked cotton in Coon field today. Willie helped Charlie Chisholm and another man to drive 8 head of cattle to town and weighed and sold them in eve. I shucked and shelled nearly 6 p'ks of new corn for bread and sunned it today.
Thu. 16th. Bright and thermometer to 100 after 11 1/2 in morn and wind from N all day and lightning from S at night. Dud and Wiley and hands picked cotton in home field today. Edna very sick last night and today and Nellie and Minnie both there today and night too. I brought tomatoes from field in morn and made a well cover.
Fri. 17th. Clear and wind from N all day but thermometer to 93 in eve and lightning in SE at night. Edna still very low and Nellie and Minnie both there all night. Willie drove Buck to town at 4 in morn and took Marion and his trunk to go to Starkville to school. Carmel didn't teach school yesterday but taught today.
Sat. 18th. Bright and cool early in morn but warm in eve and cloudy some and dropped rain a little and lightning in E at night. Wiley drove wagon to town in morn and Willie drove Buck and got 5 1/2 p'ks of new corn ground for us and they returned in eve. Edna died late in eve and Nellie and Minnie came home late in night.
Sun. 19th. Bright and warm from SE and no rain here but rained around some today. Willie and Lanehart had Edna's grave dug at Lewis' in morn and they buried her in eve. All went to burying but me.
Mon. 20th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. Willie picked cotton today and Dud and Wiley and hands picked too. I got okra from garden and tomatoes from field in morn. Cap D dined here today. He brought the little girls to school in morn.
Tue. 21st. Cloudy some in morn and began to rain from SE at 1 in eve and rained on in little showers most of eve and we had a storm of wind, a very high wind and rain at 12 to 2 in night, and on slowly till just before day. The wind blew down all of corn and cane and peas. Carmel taught school today.
Wed. 22nd. Bright most of day and no rain. Carmel taught school today. Willie drove Buck to town in morn and bought shingles to cover Dud's house and Dud hauled them in eve. I picked up pecans most of day.
Thu. 23rd. Bright and warm. Willie and Dud and Wiley covered part of Dud's house today. I brought potatoes and tomatoes from field in morn and picked up pecans most of day.
Fri. 24th. Bright and warm till 4 in eve and we had a litle shower here at 5 1/2 in eve. Willie and Dud and Wiley covered Dud's house till 6 1/2 in eve and finished it. Bro Tom came at 12 1/2 and carried the 2 little girls home in eve. I hoed turnips in new garden in morn and brought tomatoes from field and picked up some pecans in eve.
Sat. 25th. Bright and warm and no rain. Wiley and Dud hauled in some corn and hauled in the cotton in morn. Willie and Minnie drove Buck to town in eve and returned just at sunset. I planted 2 rows of turnips in new garden early in morn and grabbled some yams in field in morn and picked up some pecans in eve.
Sun. 26th. Bright in morn and warm and rained around in little showers some in eve but only sprinkled a little here. I brought some tomatoes from field in morn and some okra from garden. Gordon dined here today.
Mon. 27th. Bright and warm till late in eve and we had a quick hard shower then. Willie drove Buck and Wiley the wagon to town and carried 8 young hogs and sold them in morn. I hilled Irish potatoes in new garden and grabbled some yams in morn and picked up some pecans in eve. Dud and Sophia and Wiley's children picked Willie's cotton in patch N of here in morn and finished it.
Tue. 28th. Bright and warm and no rain but lightning in NE at night. Willie and Wiley and Dud pulled and hauled in 3 loads of corn from Coon field today. I hilled Irish potatoes in old garden and brought some tomatoes from field in morn and picked up pecans in eve.
Wed. 29th. Bright and cool from E of N and windy all day. Willie and Dud and Wiley pulled and hauled 3 loads of corn from Coon field today and women and children picked cotton. I grabbled some yams early in morn and gathered pecans most of day.
Thu. 30th. Clear and a cold wind from N all day and very chilly at night. Willie and Dud and Wiley pulled and hauled 3 loads of corn from Coon field today. I gathered pecans most of day.
