SEPTEMBER 1917

Sat. Sep. 1st. Bright and warm in morn and cloudy all eve and rained a little slowly most of eve from SE. Willie and Marion and Dud dipped cattle early in morn. I hoed ----- all of Irish potatoes to make them come up in old garden by 10 in morn and Charles and Carl and I got some muscadines by 11. Willie rode Daisie to town in eve and Wiley brought Sims from town in eve (here).

Sun. 2nd. Bright in morn and a thunder cloud came up from SE at 1 in eve and rained here most of eve slowly - not enough to run. Sims here today and at night again. Gordon here in eve.

Mon. 3rd. Bright and warm till 5 in eve and a thunder cloud came up from SE then and we had a good hard shower till 6 and slowly again after dark. Sims walked to Wiley's in morn and little Wiley brought him back here after rain in eve. Dud and some hands picked cotton today. Willie rode Daisie to Bro Tom's in eve and returned at dusk.

Tue. 4th. Bright and warm till 4 in eve and a thunder cloud came up from SE then and we had a big washing rain till 6 and slowly till after dark. Dud and some hands picked cotton in eve. Marion drove Hal to Wiley's buggy and carried Sims to town in morn. Willie and I brought some watermelons and tomatoes from field in morn. Willie rode Daisie to Jim Conners' burying in eve and came by Woodville home - the creek was up.

Wed. 5th. Bright and warm till 4 in eve and a small cloud passed around SW of here but only dropped a little here. Willie and Dud drove up the mules and hauled some cotton from field at 10 to 11 in morn and Dud and some hands picked cotton in eve. Willie rode Daisie to Nolan Veal's to see a horse in eve. I set out and watered some strawberries in morn.

Thu. 6th. Bright and warm and no rain but rained around a little far off in eve late. Willie and Marion pulled up burrs in slips in patch E of here today. Dud and some hands picked cotton. I hoed around bought pecan trees and some in old garden in morn.

Fri. 7th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. Willie and Marion pulled burrs in slips E of here in morn and finished. Dud and hands picked cotton and Willie hauled it late in eve. I hoed some in old garden early in morn and let Ed Wells have some pears. Thomas Johns dined here.

Sat. 8th. Bright and warm and no rain but a thunder cloud in sight in E most of eve. Willie rode Daisie to Ogden's in morn and to town in eve. I hoed Irish potatoes in old garden in morn and Charles and Carl and I got some muscadines in pasture at 10 to 11 in morn.

Sun. 9th. Bright and warm most of day and a thunder cloud in sight in SE late in eve. Willie and Minnie and Carmel and Marion walked to SS in eve. Charles and Carl and I brought some tomatoes and 1 watermelon from field in morn.

Mon. 10th. Bright but some clouds and very warm from NE and thundered far off in eve. Marion and Dud and Sophie picked cotton. Willie patched up hog pen at cow pen in morn and rode Daisie to Ogden's in eve. I gathered 2 bus pears for Mrs. Lanehart and Middleton early in morn and hoed some in old garden till 10 and let Fayette Linton have 1 bu pears.

Tue. 11th. Bright and a little cool from NE. Willie and Marion and hands picked cotton. I brought some tomatoes from field and picked some pepper in new garden in morn and some dry butter beans there in eve.

Wed. 12th. Bright and cool from E. Willie rode the new horse (Buck) which he swapped Jewel for on yesterday and dipped cattle at Elmwood in morn and picked cotton with Marion and hands in eve. I fed hogs in pen on cucumbers and squashes early in morn and let Ed Wells have last of pears by 10 1/2.

Thu. 13th. Bright and cool from NE and very cool at night. Willie and Marion and hands picked cotton today and hauled it late in eve. I took down the 2 pole bean arbors in morn and fed the hogs in pen on cucumbers and squashes in morn.

Fri. 14th. Bright and very cool early in morn but wind from E and warmer in eve. Willie rode Buck and Dud drove our wagon and Dago drove Wiley's wagon and carried 21 hogs to town in morn and returned at 2 in eve and Willie and Dud hauled in a load of corn and a load of cotton in eve. I replanted most of Irish potatoes in old garden at 9 to 12 in morn.

Sat. 15th. Cloudy and cool from E and sprinkled rain in morn at 9 to 11 1/2 with wind from East and cloudy some all eve. Willie and Marion and Dud dipped cattle early in morn and Willie rode Buck to town at 10 in morn and brought buggy home from shop late in eve. I finished replanting Irish potatoes in old garden in morn and Charles and Carl and I got some muscadines in eve.

Sun. 16th. Bright and cool from E and thundered and rained around some late in eve but none here. I took 2 pills last night that worked me well early in morn but I felt sick all day. Willie and Minnie and Carmel and Marion and Carl went to SS in eve and Bro Ellis preached there.

Mon. 17th. Bright and warmer till 4 in eve and we had a good hard soaking rain till 5 1/2 - and needed too - from NE. Willie and Dud carried a load of cotton to town early in morn and returned at 2 in eve and Dud plowed in new garden till rain. Carmel and Marion drove Buck to school in town in morn and returned at 1 in eve. I picked grass out of mustard in old garden in morn.

Tue. 18th. Cloudy some but bright from NE and no rain in sight. Willie and Dud carried another load of cotton to town in morn and returned at 4 1/2 in eve and Dud harrowed the ground in new garden (plowed on yesterday) late in eve with Julia and he and Willie loaded up wagon with cotton late in eve. Marion and Carmel drove Buck to school early in morn and returned just before sunset. I set out some winter onions in old garden early in morn.

Wed. 19th. Bright and pleasant and no rain in sight. Willie and Dud carried a load of cotton to gin early in morn and returned with the seed late in eve. Marion and Carmel drove Buck to school in morn and returned about sunset. I planted some turnips and mustard and kale in new garden in morn.

Thu. 20th. Cloudy some but bright and pleasant. Willie and Dud picked cotton. Carmel and Marion drove Buck to school. I hoed up grass and late beans in new garden in morn.

Fri. 21st. Bright and warm but a cool and dry wind from W of N and cool at night. Willie and Dud picked cotton and hauled it late in eve. I hoed Irish potatoes in old garden in morn. Carmel and Marion drove Buck to school in morn.

Sat. 22nd. Bright and cool and dry from NW. Willie drove Daisie to town in eve and returned at dusk. I hoed Irish potatoes in old garden and finished them by 9 in morn and grabbled some potatoes in patch E of here by 10 1/2.

Sun. 23rd. Bright and cool and dry. Wiley and Nellie drove Essy to church in town in morn and returned at 1 3/4. Rena and her 3 children dined here. Willie and I got some tomatoes in field in morn. Minnie and Carmel and Marion and little Wiley went to SS in eve.

Mon. 24th. Bright and cool and dry. Willie and Dud pulled corn all day in Gate cut field and left it there. I packed up some white oak saps for stove wood and picked some pepper in new garden in morn. I had fever all eve and night too.

Tue. 25th. Bright and cool and dry. Willie and Dud hauled in 4 loads of corn in morn and Dud picked cotton in eve. I put some ashes between rows of Irish potatoes in old garden and brought 4 long canes from field by 10 1/2 and Willie swept out our chimney in eve and he and I shucked and shelled some new bread corn in eve. I felt feverish and my right side is very sore and painful and I took 1 pill at night.

Wed. 26th. Bright and dry from E. Dud and Sophie picked cotton. Willie dipped cattle at Elmwood in morn and picked cotton in eve. Marion and Carmel drove Buck to school in morn. I finished shelling bread corn early in morn and put it on barn to dry and I grabbled some potatoes by 10 1/2. I was feverish and my right side was quite sore today.

Thu. 27th. Cloudy early in morn and rained a little shower from East at 9 to 10 in morn and bright from East balance of day. Willie picked cotton till rain in morn and Dud and some hands picked most of day and left it in field. I picked some dry butter beans before rain in morn and got some wood.

Fri. 28th. Bright and windy from NE and cool some. Dud and hands picked cotton till in eve and finished all open and Willie hauled it in eve. Willie put cattle in pasture from creek in morn. I grabbled some potatoes and packed some wood in morn.

Sat. 29th. Bright and cool and dry from N. Marion and Dud dipped cattle in morn. Willie drove wagon to town in morn and had a front wheel filled and carried 2 bus new corn and had it ground and returned late in eve. I made a wheelbarrow for Charles today and had a little fever at night.

Sun. 30th. Clear and cool and dry from N. Gordon dined here and he and Willie and Minnie and Carmel and Marion and Charles and Carl all went to SS in eve. I didn't have fever at night but felt feverish and achy.
