SEPTEMBER 1912
Sun. Sept. 1st. Bright and no rain near today. Willie and Minnie and Marion and Charles drove Josie to B Chambers in morn and returned late in eve. I walked to Wiley's and back in morn and carried some tomatoes. Bernice here most of day.
Mon. 2nd. Bright and warm and dry and no rain near today. Willie and Ben cleared in NE corner of orchard most of day. Willie and Minnie drove Sandy to Mrs. James' late in eve to see Mrs. Johnson and children. I planted turnips in garden most of morn and picked some dry pole and butter beans in eve and helped Nellie to milk.
Tue. 3rd. Bright and warm and dry and no rain in sight today. Ben cleared in NE corner of orchard today. Lucy helped Nellie about the house. I planted turnips in garden most of morn and gathered 1/2 bu of pears and put away for Cousin Nannie and fixed up a wagon for Charles and helped Nellie to milk. Willie and Minnie returned from Mrs. James at 9 at night.
Wed. 4th. Bright and warm and dry and no rain near. Willie and Ben cut down trees and briars in NE corner of orchard in morn and on N side of cowpen in eve. I got wood for Lucy to wash early in morn and hoed up ground and planted turnips in garden till 11 and I shelled some dry butter beans in eve and got wood and water and fed and drove up the cows. I had a cramp in my stomach at 11 at night and I took a dose of Liver tonic.
Thu. 5th. Bright and very warm and dry most of day and rained around some in thunder showers today but none here. Willie and Ben cut trees near cowpen on orchard side today. Lucy hoed cane in patch E of here today. I hoed in garden in morn and I picked some beans and okra in eve.
Fri. 6th. Bright and very warm and dry all morn and rained around in thunder showers most of eve and one came up from E at dusk and rained enough here to run off house. Willie and Ben put up one barbed wire across patch E of here to keep horses in S side of patch by 10 1/2 in morn and Ben cut trees in hollow in orchard balance of day. Ed Wells came at 11 1/4 in morn and got 2 more bu of pears (and the last on the tree except a few small green ones) and he paid me $2.50 and still owes $2.00. He got 12 bu in all at 75 cts. per bu and I gathered about 6 bu besides making 18 bu in all.
Sat. 7th. Bright and warm all morn and a thunder cloud passed just N of here from E at 2 in eve but no rain here and cloudy in eve. Willie went in Surry with Wiley and Ben and Lucy went on wagon to town in morn and carried 2 bbls of frost bitten molasses which Willie sold to Treppendahl for $25.00 and they returned at 2 with some ice and we had ice cream in eve and Wiley and family and Gordon and Ben all here.
Sun. 8th. Bright and very warm and dry and no rain but thunder showers passed around some in eve. Nellie and Bernice and Buddy drove Nancy to buggy to Dixie's in morn and returned late in eve. I walked to Wiley's and back in morn and carried some tomatoes. Carmel and Marion and Charles and I got some muscadines in calf pasture in eve.
Mon. 9th. Bright and warm and dry and no rain here but rained around in thunder showers some in eve. Willie and Ben and Dago pulled corn in Gate cut and on H ridge today and threw it in heaprows and left it in field all night. Lucy scraped Irish potatoes in Pine hollow today. I packed 5 turns of stable manure in garden for turnips in morn and brought some tomatoes from Pine hollow and grabbled 2 messes of yams on hilltop of Cherry cut in morn. Nellie and Bernice drove Nancy to buggy to town in morn and returned late in eve.
Tue. 10th. Bright and warm and dry all morn and rained around in thunder showers most of eve and we had a little shower at 1 1/2 in eve. Willie and Ben and Dago hauled in corn with our mules all day till 5 in eve from Gate cut and H ridge and finished hauling all poles and they repaired wire fence around Gate cut and put all of our hogs in there late in eve. Lucy hilled some of Irish potatoes in new ground E of here today. I shucked and shelled 7 pecks of bread corn by 3 in eve. Cousin Nannie and her 2 girls dined here and she went to Lewis' in eve to stay all night and left the girls here and Bro Hopper here at night too.
Wed. 11th. Bright and warm most of day but cloudy some in eve and no rain in sight. Willie and Ben and Dago pulled corn and left it in field all morn. Bro Hopper left at 9 in morn and went on to Wiley's and dined at Lanehart's. I got wood and water and gathered nearly 3 pecks of pears in hollow in orchard and winnowed some bread corn in eve.
Thu. 12th. Bright, nearly clear, and dry from N and no rain in sight. Willie and Ben and Dago hauled corn all morn and pulled all eve. I packed 6 turns of stable manure into garden for turnips and grabbled some yams and brought in some tomatoes in morn and I picked about 1 peck of pepper in garden and strung some of it in eve.
Fri. 13th. Bright and warm and dry from NE and no rain. Willie and Ben and Dago pulled corn in morn and hauled in all eve. I got wood and water for Lucy to wash early in morn and rode Sandy to Ogden's mill and Marion rode Josie and Buddy rode Nancy and went with me and we returned at 10 with 7 pecks of meal and I got wood and water till 11 and strung some pepper in eve.
Sat. 14th. Bright and warm and dry most of day and rained around some in thunder showers in eve but only dropped a little here. Willie and Ben and Dago hauled in corn in morn and Willie drove the mules to Wiley's Surry to town in eve and carried Mamie and Olita Rogers and Buddy and Marion and returned late in eve. I brought in some tomatoes and yams from field in morn.
Sun. 15th. Bright and warm most of day but we had a little shower and enough to make a little mud at 1 in eve. Minnie and her 3 children walked to Lanehart's in morn and returned late in eve. Nellie walked to Wiley's in eve. I found a hens' nest near wire fence out E of here in eve and got wood and water and fed in eve.
Mon. 16th. Bright and warm and dry and no rain here but rained around in thunder showers some in eve. Willie and Ben and Dago pulled corn all day and left it in field. Marion and Lucy dug pindars most of day and Carmel and Charles too awhile in morn. I ridged up 8 rows for turnips early in morn and brought home some tomatoes and yams by 10 in morn. I cut and packed home some okra for seed in eve.
Tue. 17th. Bright and warm and dry and no rain near. Willie and Ben and Dago hauled in corn all morn and pulled all eve. Carmel and Marion and Charles and I and Lucy dug pindars all morn and packed them home and I shelled some okra seed in eve and brought in some tomatoes and yams from field too.
Wed. 18th. Bright and warm all morn and a thunder cloud came up from NW at 1 in eve and rained slowly here till 2, enough to run off house well, and cloudy all eve. Willie and Ben and Dago pulled corn all morn and hauled in all eve. Lucy and children and I dug red pindars all morn and finished all but 3 rows of White ones. I got wood and water and fed in eve.
Thu. 19th. Bright and a little cool early in morn but warm after 10 in morn and no rain in sight. Willie and Ben and Dago hauled in corn in morn and pulled in eve. Lucy picked White peas in Sims' field today. Marion and I rode Josie in Elmwood pasture in morn and got a few wild plums in morn. Ed Wells got 1/2 bu of pears just after dinner - and the last on tree and paid me $1.50 and still owes 75 cts. I got wood and water in eve and fed and took in the 2 Scaffolds of pindars.
Fri. 20th. Bright, and warm, and dry and no rain near. Willie and Ben and Dago hauled in corn in morn and pulled in eve. I got wood and water for Lucy to wash here early in morn and shot a chicken in calf pasture and picked a peck of pepper in garden and sent to Mrs. Lanehart by Marion by 11 1/2 in morn and got some tomatoes and yams from field in eve.
Sat. 21st. Bright and warm till 3 in eve and thundered and rained around late in eve but only dropped a little here and cloudy all night. Willie and Ben and Dago hauled in corn all morn and finished all pulled down. Willie drove Sandy to buggy to town in eve. I packed and cut up good deal of wood in morn and got wood and water and fed and took in pindars in eve.
Sun. 22nd. Cloudy all day and cool from N and sprinkled rain at 6 1/2 to 10 in morn but not enough to wet ground any. All of us home in morn. Willie and Nellie and Carmel and Marion walked to schoolhouse in eve and Bro Hopper preached there. Minnie and Charles walked to Wiley's in eve.
Mon. 23rd. Bright and cool and dry from W of N and no signs of rain. Willie and Ben pulled corn today and Lucy and Marion picked cow peas (our first). Nellie and Marion went to preaching in town with Mrs. Lanehart at night at Christian Church. I hilled about 1/2 of Irish potatoes in Pine hollow in morn and cleaned out old barn in eve and grabbled some yams.
Tue. 24th. Bright and very cool early in morn but warm in eve from SW and very dry. Willie and Ben hauled in corn in morn and they and Marion and Lucy picked peas in eve. I got wood and water early in morn and finished hilling Irish potatoes in Pine hollow by 11 1/2 and I gathered 1/2 bu of small pears in hollow in orchard and fed and got wood and water in eve.
Wed. 25th. Cloudy some all day and a damp breeze from S and a thunder cloud came up from there at 3 in eve and we had a good soaking rain (and needed very much) with wind and some thunder till 5. Willie and Ben and Lucy got wet - they picked peas till the rain. I patched our fireplace and hearth today by 4 in eve.
Thu. 26th. Bright in morn and cloudy late in eve and cool from N and no rain here today. Willie and Ben and Marion picked peas just beyond the road today and packed them home. I got wood and water for Lucy to wash here early in morn and brought in some tomatoes and yams from field and planted some turnips and mustard in garden by 11 1/2 and I picked up some pecans in eve and got wood and water and fed.
Fri. 27th. Bright and cool from NE and no rain in sight. Willie and Ben and Marion picked peas in back of field and left them there. I got wood for Lucy to wash here early in morn and packed 12 turns of stable manure in garden for strawberries by 11. I found a brown hen sitting on 9 eggs in eve and put them under a yellow Dom under old barn.
Sat. 28th. Cloudy some all day and a damp breeze from SE but no rain in sight. Willie and Ben and Lucy picked peas in morn and Ben hauled all picked in eve just after dinner. Willie and Marion drove Sandy to town in eve. I brought home some tomatoes and yams early in morn and packed 2 turns of stable manure in garden and trenched 6 rows for strawberries by 11. I got wood and water and fed in eve.
Sun. 29th. Cloudy all day and a damp breeze from NE and rained a good rain here at 12 1/2 to 2 in eve and sprinkled slowly most of eve and needed too. Nellie and Carmel and Marion and Charles and I walked to Wiley's and back in eve.
Mon. 30th. Bright and cool but some clouds all day from NE. Willie and Ben and Lucy and some hands picked peas today and hauled them late in eve. I brought home some tomatoes and yams from field early in morn and shucked and shelled 9 pecks of bread corn by 3 1/2 in eve and got wood and water and fed late in eve.
