SEPTEMBER 1901
Sun. Sep. 1st. Bright and warm most of day, no rain here, but thundered and rained around near late in eve. Nellie and I got ready and started to church in morn and got as far as Neal hill and met Kendrick and wife and came back with them. I walked to Wiley's at 2 in eve and Rena and Bernice came back with me. Pa still in bed.
Mon. 2nd. Bright and warm all morn and cloudy all eve and rained around near in thunder showers at 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 but none here. Willie and Jim covered shed on E side of cotton house in morn and they picked cotton (our first) on H ridge hilltop. I hoed over most of garden and planted a few turnips by 9 1/4 in morn and I picked some whip peas in Gate cut for hogs by 11. I rode Joe to Estina and carried some pears to Dixie and Mrs. Chambers at 1 3/4 to 3 in eve and I cleaned out cotton house and ditched around it by 5 1/4 and cut up wood and milked (4 cows).
Tue. 3rd. Bright and a little cool early in morn - but warm after 9 in morn - and rained around some in eve, but none here. Willie and Jim picked cotton most of day on H ridge and I picked there too in morn and I carried some ripe pears to Sims' at 2 to 3 1/2 in eve and I hauled in cotton with Joe and cart late in eve.
Wed. 4th. Bright and a little cool early in morn - but warm after 9 in morn - and no rain in sight today. Dr. Magruder, Jr. came out to see Pa just before day and left at daylight and I gave him some preserving pears. Willie and Jim picked cotton most of day on H ridge and in old Cane hollow and I picked with them in morn and I picked some whip peas for hogs and got some vegetables and picked 11 of cotton in orchard and hauled in cotton in eve.
Thu. 5th. Bright and warm from E till late in eve and rained around some then in thundershowers, but none here. Willie and Jim picked cotton most of day in old Cane hollow and I picked with them in morn and I picked some whip peas in Gate cut for hogs and picked 16 of cotton in orchard and hauled in cotton from field, with Joe and cart, late in eve.
Fri. 6th. Bright and warm and dry from E and no rain in sight today. Willie and Jim picked cotton most of day in 2nd Cane hollow and I picked with them in morn and I picked some whip peas ( and last of them) for hogs and got a sk of corn and some vegetables and hauled in cotton from field with Joe and cart, in eve. Miss Maggie C and Bernice here most of day and they went back to Wiley's late in eve. Pa still in bed and seems worse today.
Sat. 7th. Bright and warm and dry from E and no rain in sight today. Willie and Jim picked cotton in 2nd Cane hollow in morn and I hauled it late in eve with Joe and cart. I drove Joe to new buggy to town in morn and carried about 3 bus. preserving pears to Mrs. Lea and Johnson and August M and carried some sewing to Mrs. Henderson and I got 50/c lard and 50/c coffee and 25/c sugar and some other little things from August and I returned at 12 3/4. Lewis and Cousin Mary here most of eve.
Sun. 8th. Bright and warm and dry and no rain in sight today. Nellie and I drove Joe to new buggy to church in town in morn. Seymour and Wiley and Rena and Bernice here most of day and Wiley and Rena drove Joe to new buggy to church in town at night and Bernice stayed here all night.
Mon. 9th. Bright and warm and dry and no rain in sight today. Willie and Jim picked cotton all day in 2nd Cane hollow and I hauled it late in eve. I drove Joe to new buggy to town in morn and got a bottle of whiskey for Pa and I came back by Cohen's and got 1 gal coal oil and 1/2 gal molasses. I picked some peas for hogs in Gate cut in eve and cut up some wood. Clara and Effie and little Henderson here in eve.
Tue. 10th. Cloudy some all day and a damp breeze from SE but didn't rain. Willie and Jim picked cotton most of day in 2nd Cane hollow and I hauled it late in eve. I gathered some pears early in morn for Nellie and Rena to preserve and I picked cotton in orchard till 11 and John Fosselman sent a wagon then and got Rose's rickety heifer calf - he got Cherry's steer calf on yesterday. I picked some big peas on NE corner of Gate cut for hogs and picked 15 of cotton in orchard in eve.
Wed. 11th. Cloudy some and a damp breeze from S all morn and rained 2 litle showers here from W of S at 2 to 3 1/2 in eve, and much needed too. Willie and Jim picked cotton in new SW corner in morn and I hauled it late in eve. I picked cotton in orchard in morn and picked some peas for hogs and got a sk of corn, after rain in eve. Mattie and Katie James and Edna here today.
Thu. 12th. Cloudy some all day and a damp breeze from SW most of day, but no rain. Willie and Jim picked cotton on H ridge all day and I picked in orchard all morn and 18 in eve. I picked some big peas in Gate cut for hogs and gathered some vegetables in eve and hauled cotton late in eve. Pa still in bed. Gordon stays one night with him and Tigner stays the next.
Fri. 13th. Cloudy and rained in thundershowers from SW most of day and wet ground well. Willie and Jim began to pick cotton on H ridge early in morn, but came home in less than an hour nearly wet and they worked on buggy shed on W side of barn most of day making a room to put peas in. I rode Joe to Cohen's at 7 1/2 to 11 in morn and got nearly wet (in 4 showers). I picked some big peas on poor E end of Gate cut for hogs in eve and packed and cut up some wood.
Sat. 14th. Cloudy and a breeze from SW and warm and thundered in W most of morn and rained a little shower here at 2 and a big one at 5 1/4 in eve. Willie worked on room on W side of barn and finished it all but door. Jim broke 2 hoe handles out pretending to cut locust sprouts in field in morn. I hauled 3 cart loads of wood from beyond Wiley's in morn with Joe. Willie rode Joe to Clara's in eve. I cut up wood and picked some big peas in Gate cut for hogs and got a sack of corn in eve. Wiley rode to town in eve.
Sun. 15th. Cloudy all day and no sunshine and thundered in W most of day and dropped rain several times through the day and calm. Wiley rode Goulden to his Pa's in morn and carried some pears to preserve. Rena and Bernice and Seymour and family here most of day and Dan and Buddy here in eve. Bernice and I got a bucket of muscadines from calf pasture at 10 in morn.
Mon. 16th. Cloudy and a damp breeze from SE all morn and rained a hard shower at 11 1/4 in morn and dropped on till 3 and dropped rain again late in eve and ground very wet. Willie and Jim and I castrated the spotted boar, which Willie got from Lewis, early in morn and Willie and Jim cut down some locust sprouts in cotton most of morn. I hoed over most of garden and sowed some turnips and mustard in morn by 11. Willie and I picked some peas for hogs and Joe in eve at 3 1/2 to 4 1/2.
Tue. 17th. Cloudy and wind from E of N till 9 in morn and sprinkled rain then and wind from N balance of day and quite cool and bright in eve. Willie and Wiley rode over far end of Sims' place with Sims in morn (he is trying to sell land to them) but they didn't like the land. Willie deadened trees in Luckett field and Jim hoed up grass in flower yard in eve. I put up a panel of pickets at back of garden to keep chickens out of garden by 9 in morn and gathered some vegetables and carried some okra and tomatoes to Wiley's at 10 and Bernice came back with me and I got a sk of corn in Persimmon cut and some Persimmons for Bernice by 11. I picked some peas for hogs in eve and cut up some wood. Minnie and Carmell at Wiley's most of day.
Wed. 18th. Bright and sun shined all day and quite cool from E of N. Willie and Jim picked cotton all day in SW corner and I hauled it with Joe and cart late in eve. I picked cotton in orchard most of morn and some in eve and I picked some peas in Gate cut for hogs in eve. Nellie at Wiley's all morn and Rena and Bernice came back with Nellie at 2 in eve. We had to keep hot irons to Pa all last night and again today and at night again to keep him warm.
Thu. 19th. Bright and sun shined all day and quite cool early in morn but pleasant in sun after 9 in morn and a breeze from N most of day. Willie and Jim picked cotton in SW corner all day and I hauled it late in eve. I picked cotton on H ridge in morn and I hauled about 3 bbls of corn from hollow in Pine corner for bread and picked some peas in Gate cut for hogs in eve. Nellie walked to Seymour's and back in eve.
Fri. 20th. Clear and cool, and a dry and cool breeze from N all day. Willie and Jim picked cotton in SW corner all day and I hauled it late in eve. I gathered some vegetables and cut up some wood and shucked and shelled 7 1/2 pks of bread corn (our first) and put it on Pa's roof to dry in morn and I picked some peas in Gate cut for hogs just after dinner and rode Joe to Cohen's in eve. Tigner and West stayed with Pa at night.
Sat. 21st. Bright, nearly clear, and cool and calm and dry. Willie and Jim picked cotton in SW corner in morn and I hauled it at 12. I rode Joe to Wade's mill early in morn and carried 1 1/2 bu corn (our first) and got it ground and returned at 10 1/4 and cut up some wood and hauled cotton by 12. Wiley and Rena and Bernice drove Joe to new buggy to Jack D's in eve. Willie and I picked some peas for hogs and I grabbled a few yams (our first) in Gate cut in eve and Willie milked our 4 cows and I milked Wiley's 3 late in eve.
Sun. 22nd. Bright and cool and dry but a breeze from S and some clouds and warmer today. I milked Wiley's cows and fed everything there early in morn. Gordon and little Henderson and Willie James dined here and Dan and Buddy and Lewis and family here in eve and Cousin Tom too. Wiley and Rena and Bernice returned at dusk.
Mon. 23rd. Foggy and wet till 9 1/2 in morn and bright and warm from S balance of day. Willie and Jim picked cotton in SW corner and in 3rd Cane hollow today and I hauled it late in eve. I picked cotton all morn and part of eve on H ridge. I picked some peas for hogs and Joe in Gate cut at 1 1/2 to 2 3/4 in eve. Pa still in bed and seems to be getting weaker every day.
Tue. 24th. Bright and warm from E of S. Willie picked cotton in 3rd Cane hollow most of day and Jim picked some there too but he was sick and didn't pick much and I picked cotton all morn on SE part of H ridge and picked some peas for hogs and Joe in eve. Ida and Rena drove Daisy to new buggy to town in morn and Wiley and Doug dined here and Wiley rode Goulden and led Jack mule to Cohen's in eve and brought home the new wagon.
Wed. 25th. Bright and warm and no rain. Willie drove his mare mule and Wiley's mule (Jack) to the new wagon and carried a load of cotton to Cohen's gin early in morn and returned late in eve with the seed. Jim and I picked cotton on hilltop of H ridge all morn and Jim picked there all eve. I picked some peas for hogs in Gate cut and brought in a sk of corn in one loaded wagon with cotton at dusk (in eve).
Thu. 26th. Bright, and cool in morn early and warm after 10 in morn from E. Willie carried a load of cotton to Cohen's gin, starting at daybreak and returning at 2 in eve and he and Jim picked cotton in old Cane hollow in eve. Jim and I picked all morn on H ridge and got 155 by 12. I picked some peas in Gate cut for hogs, and brought in a sack of corn, and unloaded cotton seed, in eve and Willie and Gordon and Jim loaded wagon with cotton at dusk.
Fri. 27th. Bright, but some dark clouds and a damp breeze, from E but no rain. Willie drove wagon to Cohen's gin, starting at daybreak and returning at 3 in eve and he and Jim picked cotton in old Cane hollow in eve. Jim and I picked there all morn and got 158 and I got wood and picked peas for hogs and put cotton seed in shed room on W side of barn and got some vegetables in eve. Clara and Effie here in eve. Pa seems to be growing weaker every day. Gordon stays one night with him and Tigner the next.
Sat. 28th. Bright and cool early in morn, but some dark clouds in eve and warm from E but no rain in sight today. Willie and Jim picked cotton all morn in old Cane hollow and Willie rode Joe to town in eve and paid his and Wiley's road tax. I picked cotton all morn in orchard and I picked peas in Gate cut and brought in a sack of corn and got wood in eve. Clara and little Henderson here all day and Gordon stayed with Pa at night.
Sun. 29th. Bright and cool early in morn, but some clouds and warmer in eve from E but no rain. Willie and Minnie and baby drove Joe to Aunt Mary's early in morn and returned at dark. Wiley and Rena and Bernice and Clara here most of day and Lewis stayed with Pa at night.
Mon. 30th. Bright, but some clouds and cool in morn early, but warm in eve - wind from N of E. Willie and Jim picked cotton all day in old Cane hollow and I hauled it at 12 and again late in eve. I picked cotton all morn in orchard and I packed and cut up wood, and picked sack of peas for hogs in Gate cut, and brought in a sack of corn, in eve. West and Tigner stayed with Pa at night.
