SEPTEMBER 1897

Wed. Sep. 1st. Bright and warm but a pleasant SE breeze all day and no rain but thundered and showered around some at 3 to 4 in eve. My headache got a little better in morn but didn't leave me till noon. Pa picked cotton most of day in orchard and Willie and I picked on H ridge till 11 in morn and in Cherry cut most of eve on W side. Wiley brought Helen and her little girl here (from his house) at 12 1/4 and Wiley went back in eve and Helen stayed all night. Lewis dined here - he was painting Dixie's buggy all yesterday eve and this morn and finished it at 11 3/4.

Thu. 2nd. Bright and warm and no rain around and getting dry. Pa picked cotton in orchard all day and Willie and I on W side of Cherry cut all day. Helen and little Nellie went to Lewis' in morn.

Fri. 3rd. Bright and quite warm at 11 to 3 in eve and cloudy some all eve and thundered and showered SW and W and N of here (near) at 2 1/2 to 5 in eve and a cloud came up from E at dusk and rained near here but only dropped here and very warm all night. Pa picked cotton in orchard all day and Willie and I on W side of Cherry cut all day. Dixie washed in morn. Nellie has been at Wiley's since last Fri eve.

Sat. 4th. Bright and warm and dry - wind from E and showered around a little in eve but only dropped here at 3 1/2 in eve. Pa picked cotton in orchard part of morn and Willie in Cherry cut and I drove Hattie to cart to Cohen's in morn and got a bbl flour and some other things on credit and returned at 11 1/2. Pa walked to Clara's in eve and Willie rode Joe to Wiley's in eve and brought Nellie home at sunset and Wiley and Rena came too and stayed all night. I brought in some corn and cut up some wood and drew water in eve and Dixie made 2 lowell's picking sacks for Willie and me and a pr lowell suspenders for me in eve. Sims and Mary Miller here late in eve a while.

Sun. 5th. Bright most of day but cloudy some and a pleasant E breeze all day and not warm today and rained some after 11 at night. Wiley rode Rachael to his Pa's in morn and came back late in eve and he and Rena went home on our old buggy late in eve. He left his buggy (the 1 which he lately bought from Cohen) here for Seymour to repair. B C came at 3 in eve and he and Dixie and Willie and I walked to school house and had Sunday School in eve and B C and Dixie drove Miller and Willie rode Joe to chapel to Campbellite preaching late in eve and returned at 11 1/4 in night in a slow rain. I grabbled our first mess of yams (large ones) on H ridge early in morn and packed in some corn then from Persimmon cut (white corn).

Mon. 6th. Cloudy some all day but bright and a good E breeze all morn and part of eve and a thundercloud came up from E late in eve but only sprinkled here just after sunset. Willie and I picked cotton all day in Cherry cut and water hole part and Pa picked there in morn and in orchard in eve. Willie and I brought our cotton home on Hattie in eve.

Tue. 7th. Bright and warm in morn from E and thundered and showered around near most of eve after 2 1/2 and very sultry and cloudy here but only dropped rain at 3 1/2. Pa picked cotton all day on hilltop of Cherry cut and Willie and I picked all day in water hole part. Clarissa picked in morn in orchard and on H ridge most of eve to pay me for going after palmetto for her last June.

Wed. 8th. Bright and quite warm all day and little showers far off all eve but none here and getting quite dry. Pa picked cotton all day in Cherry cut and Willie and I picked in water hole part till 3 in eve and finished there and we picked in new 2nd Cane hollow balance of eve.

Thu. 9th. Bright and quite warm and showered around some most of eve but only sprinkled here at 1. Pa picked cotton all day in Cherry cut and finished there all but 2 short rows and Willie and I picked cotton all day in new 2nd Cane hollow. Dixie drove Hattie to Chester Henderson's in eve and carried some sewing and Mrs H gave her some butter. B C here a while late in eve but left at sunset.

Fri. 10th. Bright, not so warm as yesterday and no rain around today - wind from N of E. Willie and I picked cotton all morn in new 2nd Cane hollow and Pa in orchard all day. I cleaned out front part of new barn and put my baskets and some bbls and some corn into old barn and spread the cotton in new barn from back to front to keep it from heating at 2 to 4 1/2 in eve and I grabbled about 1/2 bu yams on H ridge (for Mrs. Breland) and cut up wood and drew water and helped Nellie to milk late in eve. B C came at 2 and he and Dixie drove Miller and Willie (got up) and rode Dan to preaching at Estina and a baptizing in eve and returned late.

Sat. 11th. Bright, but some clouds all day and cooler with a NE breeze and quite dry. Pa picked cotton in morn in head of old Cane hollow and walked to Clara's in eve and Willie and I picked all day till 5 in eve in new 2nd Cane hollow and we picked in orchard in old cowpen corner at 5 to 6 in eve. I had a dull pain in left side of my head in eve and took 2 Pierce's pills at 5 in eve.

Sun. 12th. Cloudy, and rained a little shower at daylight from E or SE and again at 12, and again at 6 in eve and a pretty high E wind all day and all night too, but bright part of day and didn't rain enough altogether to make mud. Willie rode Dan to Pinson place early in morn and returned at dark. I rode Hattie in cow pasture and salted cattle at 8 1/2 to 9 1/2 in morn. Mrs. Baker here all day. I walked to Lewis' at 4 in eve but Clara's children didn't come on account of threatening weather and we didn't have any Sunday School. B C came late in eve and left at 8 1/2 at night. I took 2 Pierce's pills early in morn (and 2 on yesterday eve) and they worked me at 1 to 3 in eve well.

Mon. 13th. Cloudy some and a pretty high SE wind most of morn and showered around at 10 to 11 in morn and we had a good hard one at 12 1/4 from S which wet the ground pretty well and much needed and bright most of eve. Willie and I picked cotton all day in new 2nd Cane hollow (we lost about 1/2 hour at noon on account of rain) and Pa picked all day in orchard and Clarissa picked all morn on H ridge and got wet in the shower at 12 1/4.

Tue. 14th. Bright and quite warm most of day but thunder showers passed around near at 4 to 5 in eve but none here. Pa picked cotton all day in orchard. Willie and I picked in new 2nd Cane hollow in morn and finished there (first time) at 11 3/4 and we picked in old Cane hollow all eve. Nellie picked a sk full late in eve and I grabbled some potatoes late in eve and gave Cousin Sallie a mess.

Wed. 15th. Bright and very warm till 1 1/2 and a cloud came up then from E and we had a good hard rain till 2 without thunder or wind and wet ground well and bright balance of eve but thundered and showered around most of eve. Pa picked cotton in orchard in morn and Willie and I picked in old Cane hollow. I came home at 11 in morn and lay down with bad headache till 12 and I had it pretty bad all eve and it got a little better at sunset but lasted all night. Pa, Willie and I walked down in cow pasture at 2 1/2 in eve to cut and split some pine wood but it was so warm and a little shower came up too and we only cut a little and came back home.

Thu. 16th. Bright, nearly clear and pleasant in shade, but sun was warm after 10 in morn and no signs of rain today. My headache got better after breakfast and left me entirely at noon. Willie and I picked cotton most of morn in old Cane hollow (we lost 1 hour in morn on account of wet) and Willie picked there all eve and Pa picked in orchard all day. Nellie and I drove Hattie to Cohen's in eve and got 20 lbs coffee and 1 bu meal on credit and Nellie paid for the cloth that she bought and we got home just after sunset.

Fri. 17th. Bright, but some clouds and sun shined all day and a thunder cloud came up from E and it rained a little shower at 9 at night. Cohen sent 2 wagons with cotton seed to exchange early in morn and carried 1 load of Pa's cotton (all) from cotton house and 1 load of Willie's and mine from new barn and I rode Hattie and went and we got to gin at 10 and they got through ginning the 2 bales at 12 3/4 and the 2 wagons brought the seed home and got the other 2 loads of Willie's and mine and got to the gin 3/4 of an hour by sun (too late to gin it). I was at gin most of day and got home just after sunset. Willie picked some cotton in old Cane hollow at 9 to 12 in morn and some in eve and Pa picked some in orchard today.

Sat. 18th. Bright and warm most of morn and thundered and showered around most of eve E and SE of here but only dropped here at 1 1/2 in eve. Pa picked cotton most of day in orchard and Willie picked most of day in old Cane hollow. I grabbled some potatoes on H ridge early in morn and I rode Hattie to Cohen's at 8 to 9 in morn and they finished ginning my other 2 bales early in morn and got it hauled to store by 11 and I sold my 3 bales weighing 555, 516 and 386 and Pa's bale weighing 423 to Cohen at 6 cts. and I got home at 12 3/4. I brought in some corn on Hattie in eve and threw the cotton seed out of 2 bales in back of cotton house for planting and I packed and cut up some wood in eve. Fayette B brought me a large basket at 5 in eve and I gave him 2 gallons molasses for it (about 40 cts.).

Sun. 19th. Bright, nearly clear and pleasant with N breeze all day and cool at night. Willie rode Dan and B C and Dixie drove Miller to Percy's creek to Protracted meeting in morn early and they returned at 9 at night. Mrs. Baker here all day and left late in eve. I rode Hattie in cow pasture and salted cattle at 1 to 2 in eve. I walked to School house and we had Sunday School late in eve.

Mon. 20th. Clear and cool and a dry N wind all day. Pa picked cotton in orchard and Willie and I picked in old Cane hollow all day. Dixie and West drove Bonnie to Pinson place in morn and West rode Bonnie back in eve and Dixie is to stay till Saturday. Mrs. Henderson here in eve and brought us some butter.

Tue. 21st. Clear and quite cool early in morn but pleasant in sunshine all day - a gentle breeze from N. Pa picked cotton in orchard and finished there 2nd time. Willie and I picked cotton in old Cane hollow all day. I have a sore throat and some cold in my head and throat yesterday and today. Ida McGraw here in eve awhile.

Wed. 22nd. Clear and cool and dry from N. Pa picked cotton all day on H ridge and Willie all day in old Cane hollow. I picked in old Cane hollow till 11 in morn and came home then with headache and lay down then till 12 and I ate little dinner and rode Hattie to Pine corner to get some corn and vomited twice. I came home and ate a little more and went to pick cotton but vomited my stomach empty and came home and lay down till after 4 and got up and ate a little and headache got better. I drew water and cut up wood late in eve.

Thu. 23rd. Bright but some little clouds all day and quite cool early in morn but good deal warmer in eve. Pa picked cotton all day on H ridge and Willie and I all day in old Cane hollow in NW corner on hillside. My headache left me in morn. I rested well last night. Misses Adah and Hattie W here awhile in eve.

Fri. 24th. Clear and quite cool in morn but pleasant and dry and calm. Pa picked cotton all day on H ridge and Willie and I all day in old Cane hollow. Nellie and Lucy washed and scoured today. Clara and her 2 smallest children here in eve awhile.

Sat. 25th. Bright, nearly clear, and pleasant and dry and calm. Pa picked cotton on H ridge in morn and Willie and I in old Cane hollow and Pa walked to Clara's in eve. I rode Hattie to Cohen's in eve and got some meat and lard which I paid for and I got 1 bu new meal from mill on credit. I met Dixie and Rena in Surgett field (near Cohen's) coming home driving Rachael to Dixie's buggy. Dixie has been at Wiley's since last Mon. I got home 3/4 of an hour by sun. Seymour brought wagon for his sow shoat at sunset but didn't take her on account of her being in "season".

Sun. 26th. Bright, nearly clear, and dry and pleasant from N. I packed a sk of corn from Pine corner and grabbled some potatoes on H ridge early in morn. Wiley came in our old buggy early in morn and he cut my hair at 10 in morn and I shaved then. Willie rode Joe to Union church in morn and returned at 2 1/2. B C here all day and left at dusk. Wiley and Rena went home late in eve. B C and Dixie and Nellie and Willie and I walked to Lewis' in eve at 4 and Bro. Breland and Hopper there and Breland preached and they went on to Woodville late in eve.

Mon. 27th. Bright and nearly clear and smoky and dry and pleasant. Pa picked cotton on H ridge all day and Willie and I picked all day in old Cane hollow on S side (on hillside). Preston Veal came early in morn and got 2 of black bitch's pups.

Tue. 28th. Bright, but some clouds and warm in eve - wind from SE and some appearance of rain but very dry. Pa picked cotton on H ridge all day and Willie and I in old Cane hollow on hillside on S side. E. M. Tabor here most of day. Dixie drove up Lillie cow with a heifer calf from cow pasture late in eve.

Wed. 29th. Bright and warm and dry from E. Willie and I picked cotton all morn in old Cane hollow and finished there first time. Pa picked all day on H ridge and Willie picked there in eve. I rode Hattie to Cohen's in eve to see about ginning and returned 1 hour by sun. I had a headache all day and bad late in eve and all night. I took 4 Pierce's pellets through the day but they didn't seem to do any good.

Thu. 30th. Bright, but some clouds and warm and dry from E. I vomited freely early in morn and drank some coffee and my headache got better after breakfast and left me before dinner. Pa picked cotton all day on H ridge and Willie and I all day on upper side of Cherry cut.
