SEPTEMBER 1895

Sun. Sept. 1st. Bright and quite warm till 2 1/2 in eve and cloudy and thundered around some in eve but no rain here. All of us home today. John Miller walked down to Estina in morn and didn't come back at night. Mrs. Baker here all day and Bud and W.D. and Leroy and Miss Becky Ogden and Dorsey Stuart and sister Adah here in eve and all left late in eve but Mag Morris.

Mon. 2nd. Bright and warm all morn and clouded up at 1 and we had a good rain from NW at 2 to 3 and slowly till 5 and very much needed. Pa picked cotton in Cane hollow and Willie in Cherry cut and I in orchard most of morn and we did nothing in eve on account of rain. John Miller stayed at Lewis' last night and Mag here and they left at 10 in morn.

Tue. 3rd. Bright and warm from SW and dropped rain at 11 in morn and again at 4 in eve. Pa, Willie and I packed some rails from roadside and penned up E end of Pa's gallery for cotton in morn and Pa picked in Cane hollow and Willie and I in Cherry cut in eve. W.D. dined here and here for supper too.

Wed. 4th. Bright and warm from W and no rain. Pa picked cotton in Cane hollow and Willie and I picked on W side of Cherry cut most of day. Pa is hoarse with a cold and I have had one since last Saturday. I had a toothache all eve and till midnight and didn't sleep well.

Thu. 5th. Bright and quite warm from W and no rain. Willie and I picked cotton all day and on W and S and SW part of Cherry cut and Pa picked there in morn and in Cane hollow in eve.

Fri. 6th. Bright and quite warm from SW and no rain. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton on W and SW part of Cherry cut (in new part) and we picked on hilltop of H ridge all eve. W.D. dined here and left at 1 1/4. Nellie rode Hattie to Clara's in eve.

Sat. 7th. Bright and quite warm and dry from W. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton on W and SW part of Cherry cut in morn. I rode Hattie to Cohen's in eve and carried some eggs and got some lard and other things.

Sun. 8th. Bright and quite warm and dry from NW. I grabbled about 1/2 bu. of sweet potatoes on NE corner of Persimmon cut (our 1st) early in morn. Bud and W.D. and Mrs. Baker and Ed Tabor here all day and Joe Miller and Beau C came in eve and Bud and Willie rode horseback and W.D. and Rena and B.C. and Dixie went in buggies to Chapel late in eve to preaching and returned at 11 1/2 at night.

Mon. 9th. Bright and quite warm and dry till 1 1/2 and cloudy some all eve and rained around in thundershowers most of eve but none here. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton on W and SW part of Cherry cut in morn and on H ridge all eve.

Tue. 10th. Bright and quite warm and dry most of day. Cloudy some in eve and rained around in little showers but none here. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton on W and SW part of Cherry cut in morn and on H ridge in eve. Willie rode Hattie to Mr. D Chambers at 4 in eve. They sent for us to help with John -his mind is not right. Willie returned at 8 1/2 at night.

Wed. 11th. Bright and warm till 2 and we had a little shower then from E of N and cloudy some balance of eve. Willie and I picked cotton on H ridge and Pa on Cherry cut in morn and Pa and Willie picked on H ridge in eve and I picked part of eve in orchard. I arose with a headache and lay down at 10 to 1 and suffered all eve and night with it but didn't vomit any.

Thu. 12th. Bright and warm from NE and no rain. My headache got better after breakfast and left me in eve. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton on hilltop of Cherry cut till 11 in morn and Pa picked on H ridge and Willie and I in orchard all eve.

Fri. 13th. Bright and warm and dry from E. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton till 11 in morn in Cherry cut and we picked all eve in orchard.

Sat. 14th. Bright and quite warm and dry all morn and rained a good hard shower toward Woodville at 2 in eve and another just before night but none here. Pa and Willie picked cotton in old Cane hollow in morn and Nellie and Mrs. Baker drove Hattie and I rode Joe to town in morn and Mrs. Baker got her 4 mos. pay for teaching school. We stopped and dined at Chester Henderson's and it rained a hard shower there at 2 and we got home just before sunset. Mr. Newman came in eve and stayed all night.

Sun. 15th. Bright and warm and dry from E but rained a good shower NE of here (near) and sprinkled here just at sunset. Mrs. Baker and Mr. Newman here last night and today. I rode Hattie to Mr. D Chambers in eve and returned just before sunset. Pa and Mr. Newman walked to Clara's and back in eve.

Mon. 16th. Bright and warm till 2 1/2 in eve and showered around then and rained enough here to run off house and cloudy balance of eve. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton in Cane hollow in morn and at 12 3/4 to 2 1/2 in eve and rain ran us home then and we picked on H ridge after 3 in eve and cotton was wet some. Mr. Newman at Lewis' most of day and came back after sunset and Nellie at Gussie's most of day.

Tue. 17th. Bright but some clouds and no rain. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton all day in Cane hollow and we got wet in morn with dew and yesterday's rain on cotton and didn't get dry till in eve. Mr. Newman left early in morn. They carried John Chambers to New Orleans today. Three of our pigs have been getting out through big gully for some time and they came up into orchard today.

Wed. 18th. Bright and warm in E till late in eve and a cloud came up from E and we had a good hard shower at 5 in eve and much needed. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton in old Cane hollow till 4 1/2 in eve and rain stopped us then. Some of our pigs got into orchard in morn and Willie and I got them out at 12 1/2 to 1 and I put some of them in pen late in eve. W.D. here to supper.

Thu. 19th. Bright and warm from SE and no rain. I arose with sick stomach and took 2 of Pierce's pills and ate little breakfast but vomited it up about 1 1/2 hours afterwards and bowels ran off from before daylight till I vomited and quit then and I lay on pallet most of morn. Pa and Willie picked cotton on H ridge at 8 to 11 1/2 in morn and I picked with them all eve in Cane hollow. Mrs. Mag McGraw came in eve and stayed all night.

Fri. 20th. Bright and warm till 2 in eve and a thunder cloud came up then from SE but didn't rain and cloudy some all eve. Willie picked cotton in Cane hollow all day and I picked there in morn and Pa picked on H ridge all day. I rode Hattie to Cohen's in eve to see about ginning. Mrs. Baker and Dixie drove Bonnie to town in morn and returned at 2 1/4 in eve.

Sat. 21st. Bright and warm from SE till late in eve and thundershowers passed around but only dropped here. Cohen sent 3 wagons early in morn and carried my 2 bales and 1 for Pa and Willie and they got through with it by 12 1/2 and I sold it to Cohen at 7 1/2 cts.. I returned at 2 and they brought my seed at 2 1/4. Pa and Willie picked cotton awhile in orchard in morn. Willie rode Joe to town to carry a letter for Mrs. Baker at 4 to 7 1/2 in eve.

Sun. 22nd. Cloudy all day and sun shined very little and rained around some in morn and we had a hard shower at 12 1/2 and some at 2 and quit. I grabbled about 1/2 bu. potatoes in Persimmon cut early in morn. Beau C and Dixie went in her buggy and W.D. and Rena in Gussie's buggy to Donegal church in morn and returned at 3 1/4 in eve.

Mon. 23rd. Bright and warm from E and no rain but showered around some in eve. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton in SW part of Cherry cut (in theirs) till 9 1/2 in morn and in orchard balance of day.

Tue. 24th. Bright and cool some early in morn from E of N but warm and cloudy some in eve and showered SW of here but none here. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton in SW part of Cherry cut (in new part) till 10 1/4 in morn and in orchard balance of day.

Wed. 25th. Bright and warm from SE and showered around SW of here some in eve but none here. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton in SW (new) part of Cherry cut till 11 in morn and we picked in orchard at 12 1/2 to 3 and finished there and picked on H ridge late in eve.

Thu. 26th. Bright and warm and dry and no rain. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton in Cherry cut (in new part SW) in morn and Pa and Willie picked on H ridge all eve and I rode Hattie to Joe Lewis' in eve and met McDonald and others there to settle a dispute about a cow but we couldn't and I got home at dusk.

Fri. 27th. Bright and a cool breeze from NE and no rain. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton in morn on SW part of Cherry cut and we picked all eve on H ridge. Willie killed a large coon in Sims' field early in morn and gave to Ray. W.D. here at night till 8.

Sat. 28th. Bright and cool from NE and dry. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton all morn in Cherry cut on W side in new part. I packed in some corn and wood and grabbled some potatoes in eve. Dixie and Rena walked to Estina in eve and W.D. and B.C. came back with them and here till 8 at night. I arose with a dull headache and had it all day and all night bad and took 1 Pierce's pill at 11 1/4 in morn and another one at midnight and slept but little.

Sun. 29th. Bright and quite cool and a pretty high NE wind most of day and dry. I vomited once with headache when I arose but it got better after I drank my coffee but didn't leave me till noon. W.D. and Dan and Mrs. Baker here all day and W.D. and B.C. here till 8 1/4 at night. I rode Hattie to Clara's in eve.

Mon. 30th. Bright and very cool early in morn and a cool and dry N wind all day and very cool at night again. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton all morn till 12 on W side of Cherry cut in new part and Willie and I picked all eve in Cane hollow and Pa on H ridge.
