OCTOBER 1917

Mon. Oct. 1st. Clear and cool and dry. Willie and Dud and 1 hand pulled corn all day and left it in field. I grabbled some potatoes and cut up some stove wood and picked up a few pecans in morn and found 2 hens' nests in eve.

Tue. 2nd. Bright, nearly clear, and cool and dry. Willie and Dud and Henry and one other hand hauled in corn all day. I drew water to wash and picked up some pecans today.

Wed. 3rd. Bright and cool and dry. Willie and Dud and 2 hands pulled corn all day and left it in field. I packed and cut up some wood and picked up some pecans and shelled some dry butter beans today.

Thu. 4th. Bright and sprinkled rain a little at 8 in morn and lightning in NW at night. Willie and Dud and 2 hands hauled in corn all day. I cut up wood and grabbled some potatoes and picked up some pecans in morn. I felt feverish and achy most of day but slept well at night.

Fri. 5th. Bright and very dry. Willie and Dud and 2 hands pulled and hauled in corn all day. I packed one turn of ashes and 5 of stable manure in old garden and put between rows of Irish potatoes and brought some tomatoes from field in morn.

Sat. 6th. Bright and cool and dry from NE. Willie and Dud didn't work in morn. Willie and Minnie drove Daisie to Mrs. James' in eve. I hoed over most of Irish potatoes in old garden in morn and picked up some pecans in eve.

Sun. 7th. Bright and very cool early in morn but warmer in eve. Edith and Annie Lanehart and Mildred McKeithen dined here and they and Carmel and Marion and Charles walked to SS in eve. Willie and Minnie returned from Mrs. James' at dusk.

Mon. 8th. Cloudy and wind from N all day and very cool all eve and rained a little just after dark. Willie and Dud and Lewis Peck pulled corn all morn and hauled it in 3 loads in eve and Dud and Lewis sawed and split some pecan wood late in eve. I finished hoeing Irish potatoes and strawberries in old garden in morn and grabbled some potatoes. I cut up some wood late in eve and we had fires in both rooms at night.

Tue. 9th. Clear and very chilly from N early in morn but calm in eve. Willie and Dud and Lewis pulled and hauled in corn all day. I cut up some wood and threshed the big pecan tree at plum thicket and Carl and I got 1 p'k there and picked up some under other trees.

Wed. 10th. Clear and frost enough to scorch vegetation some in morn but warmer in eve. Willie dipped cattle at Elmwood in morn and Dud and Lewis pulled corn and they and Willie hauled in corn in eve. I grabbled some potatoes and brought some tomatoes from field in morn.

Thu. 11th. Clear and warmer today from SW. Willie and Dud pulled and hauled in corn all day in patches N and E of here and finished last of corn. I threshed and gathered 1/2 p'k of pecans in morn.

Fri. 12th. Clear and cool from NE. Willie and Dud picked cotton today and hauled it late in eve. I grabbled some potatoes early in morn after cutting wood and brought some tomatoes from field and carried them to Mrs. Lanehart.

Sat. 13th. Bright but cloudy some and a damp wind from SE. Willie and Marion and Dud dipped cattle early in morn and Willie drove Buck to town at 11 in morn and carried some pepper to Miss Mattie Hays - which I picked. I cut up good deal of wood early in morn.

Sun. 14th. Bright but cloudy some and warmer from S. Nellie and I walked to Wiley's and Charles and Carl too in morn and carried some tomatoes and children and I came back at 11 1/2. J.N. and Lewis and Marie Miller came in an auto in eve and brought Carmel home.

Mon. 15th. Bright and warm and dry but wind and clouds from SE. Willie rode Daisie to Surgett's and helped John Fosselmann to drive 9 steers to town and sold them to him and returned at 12 1/4 and picked cotton in eve. I threshed and gathered 1 p'k of pecans in morn.

Tue. 16th. Bright but cloudy some and warm from SE. Willie and Dud and Sophie picked cotton today. I threshed and gathered pecans today.

Wed. 17th. Bright but cloudy some and warm from SE. Willie and Dud and 1 woman picked peas in Gate cut today. I threshed and gathered pecans today.

Thu. 18th. Bright and warm all day and lightning in W at night and rained a good hard rain without wind or thunder before midnight and again before day - and much needed too for it was very dry. Willie and Dud and 1 woman picked peas in Gate cut today and hauled them late in eve. I grabbled some potatoes and brought some tomatoes from field early in morn and gathered some pecans.

Fri. 19th. Bright and very cool from W of N all day and clear and calm and cold at night. Willie and Dud sawed and split some pecan wood early in morn and picked peas most of day in Gate cut and hauled them late in eve. I picked up pecans most of day. Katie and Annabel James came home with Carmel and Marion at dark.

Sat. 20th. Clear and frost in morn but didn't seem to kill vegetation. Wind from NE and warmer in eve. Nellie and Katie James drove Buck to town in morn and Lucille came back with them in morn. Willie rode Daisie to town in morn and returned late in eve. I threshed and gathered pecans in morn after bringing some

tomatoes from field.

Sun. 21st. Clear and not quite cold enough for frost in morn. Willie and Minnie and Carmel and Marion and Katie and Annabel James walked to SS in eve and Bro Ellis preached there. Lucile James left in eve at 3.

Mon. 22nd. Clear and very cool early in morn but calm and warmer in eve. Willie and Dud and some hands picked peas in Gate cut today and finished that cut and hauled them late in eve. I threshed and gathered pecans today.

Tue. 23rd. Clear and a cold wind from N all day and we had a killing freeze at night. We put our 8 milk cows in Gate cut early in morn and Willie and hands picked peas in Cherry cut. Willie cut and ricked some seed cane in eve. I gathered pecans today.

Wed. 24th. Clear and a killing freeze in morn but calm and warmer in eve. Willie dipped cattle at Elmwood in morn and picked peas with Dud and hands in eve. I got wood for Leah to wash and cut up good deal of wood early in morn and threshed and gathered pecans today.

Thu. 25th. Bright but cloudy some all day and wind high from SE most of day and rained just after midnight from NW with some wind and thunder - a good rain and needed too. Willie and Dud and hands picked peas and hauled them late in eve. Wiley got our mules and wagon early in morn and carried 2 loads of cotton to Woodville gin. I gathered pecans today.

Fri. 26th. Bright and pleasant from NW. Willie shucked and he and I shelled 6 p'ks of bread corn in morn. I cut up wood and picked up nearly 1 p'k of pecans. Willie picked peas in eve and hauled them late in eve. Marie Miller came home with Carmel and Marion late in eve.

Sat. 27th. Bright and warm and sprinkled rain a little at 12 in day. Willie and Marion and Dud dipped cattle early in morn and Willie and Marion drove Daisy to town and carried 6 p'ks of corn to mill and returned at 3 in eve. I picked up pecans after cutting up good deal of wood in morn.

Sun. 28th. Bright and warm from SW. Willie and Minnie drove Daisy to the Courthouse to a general meeting for prayer in morn and returned at 3 in eve. I brought some tomatoes from field early in morn. Gordon dined here. Carmel and Marion and Marie Miller walked to SS in eve.

Mon. 29th. Bright and warm from SW till midday and wind changed to NW and turned cold and chilly and windy in eve. Willie and Dud and Sophia picked peas and left them in field. I gathered pecans today.

Tue. 30th. Clear and a freeze in morn and a cold wind from W of N all day. Willie and Dud picked peas and hauled them late in eve. I gathered pecans today and picked some red pepper in new garden late in eve.

Wed. 31st. A hard freeze in morn but calm and warmer in eve. Willie and Dud and some hands picked peas and hauled them late in eve. I got wood for Leah to wash early in morn and threshed and gathered pecans.
