OCTOBER 1914
Thu. Oct. 1st. It misted and sprinkled rain most of day but sun shined out some late in eve and clear at night. Willie and Dud and Sophia picked peas till 9 1/2 in morn and rain stopped them and Willie picked in eve awhile and rain stopped him at 3 and he rode Sandy to hunt cattle late in eve. I got wood and water for Leah to wash early in morn and cut up some house and stove wood and shucked corn before dinner and I set out 7 rows of white onions in NE corner of garden by 3 in eve and grabbled some potatoes on H ridge late in eve.
Fri. 2nd. Bright and pleasant from SW most of day but rained around some in eve in little showers. Dud and Sophia picked peas today and Dud hauled them late in eve. Willie picked peas in morn and he and Minnie drove Sandy to Mr. A.E. Fugler's burying in eve. I picked or dug pindars in morn and got 5 pk's and I picked up some pecans in eve and Carmel and I milked late in eve.
Sat. 3rd. Cloudy some all day, but bright and pleasant most of day. Willie and I dug pindars in morn and Willie and Nellie drove Sandy to town in eve. I grabbled some yams on H ridge in eve and picked up some pecans and Carmel and I milked and Lucille and Annabel James came here late in eve from Wiley's (they came home in Surry with Bernice from town on yesterday eve.) They staid here at night.
Sun. 4th. Bright and pleasant. Bernice and Lucille and Annabel and Earl dined here. Morrow preached at the schoolhouse in eve and all went but Nellie and me and Carl.
Mon. 5th. Bright and pleasant and dry. Willie and Dud and Sophia picked peas today and Willie hauled them in late in eve. I dug pindars most of morn and part of eve and got 8 buckets or p'ks.
Tue. 6th. Bright and warm and dry but dropped rain a little at 3 in eve. Willie and Dud and Sophia picked peas today and hauled them in late in eve. I dug pindars in morn and got 5 p'ks and I picked up some pecans in eve.
Wed. 7th. Bright and warm most of day but rained a little shower from SE just at dusk. Willie and Dud and Sophia picked peas today and hauled them in late in eve. I dug 5 p'ks of pindars in morn and shelled some bread corn in eve. Marion in bed today with cold and fever.
Thu. 8th. Bright and warm most of day and rained far off in eve some but none here. Dud and Sophia picked peas today and Willie hauled them late in eve. Willie drove Sandy to town in morn and got some ice for Marion. He had fever till late in eve and it went off. I shelled and winnowed some bread corn in morn and sunned it in sacks and put out pindars in morn and took them in in eve.
Fri. 9th. Bright most of day but rained around in little showers some in eve and we had a little one at 4 1/2 in eve. Dud and Sophia picked peas today and hauled them late in eve. Willie hunted and found several of his sows with young pigs in pasture today and he put up a partition in pea room today too. I hoed late turnips in garden in morn.
Sat. 10th. Bright, but some clouds all day, and warm, but no rain but a thunder cloud in sight in NW and N all night with lightning. Dud drove the wagon and carried some whip peas and bread corn to town in morn and Willie rode Sandy and went and they returned at 1 1/2 in eve. I threshed the little pecan tree in SE corner of grove and gathered about 1/2 pk of pecans in morn and I grabbled some yams on H ridge and picked some peas for the 2 pigs in pen in eve.
Sun. 11th. Warm and cloudy all day and rained around most of eve, and sprinkled slowly here late in eve. Willie and Carmel drove Sandy to Mrs. Carrie Morris' burying in eve.
Mon. 12th. Bright and warm till late in eve and thunder cloud came up from NW at dark and we had a good rain and much needed. Willie and Dud and Sophia picked peas and hauled them late in eve. I dug pindars in morn and eve too and got 7 p'ks in all.
Tue. 13th. Cloudy and cool from N till 4 1/4 in eve and a cloud came up from NW then and rained and rained here till 3 1/4. Willie and hands picked peas most of day and Willie and Dud hauled them late in eve and got wet in the rain. I dug pindars in the near patch most of day.
Wed. 14th. Bright and a cold wind from W of N most of day and clear all night and chilly. Willie and hands picked peas and hauled them late in eve. I dug pindars in near patch in morn and got 4 p'ks and I gathered nearly one bu. of late pears out NW of cowpen in eve and I grabbled some yams.
Thu. 15th. Bright and nearly cold enough for frost in morn and a cold wind from W of N all day. Willie and hands picked peas today and hauled them late in eve. I got wood for Leah to wash early in morn and I dug pindars most of morn and patched one of my shoes in eve.
Fri. 16th. Clear and quite cool and dry from NW. Willie and hands picked peas today and hauled them late in eve. I dug pindars in near patch in morn and picked up a few pecans in eve.
Sat. 17th. Clear and cool and dry. Willie picked peas in morn and drove Sandy to town in eve. I dug pindars in morn and grabbled some yams on H ridge in eve and picked some peas for pigs.
Sun. 18th. Bright but some clouds and pleasant. All went to SS in eve but Minnie and Charles and Carl and me and Bro Ellis preached there in eve.
Mon. 19th. Cloudy all day and rained slowly at 4 to 6 in eve, and quit then and cloudy all night from SE. Willie and Dud hauled pea hay all day and till 4 in eve and finished all and Dud rode Sandy across the creek to get pea pickers and got nearly wet. Willie hauled in some which some hands picked late in eve and got nearly wet. I picked faulty pindars out of nearly 3 bbls of good ones today.
Tue. 20th. Bright and pleasant from S and no rain in sight. Willie and Dud pulled corn today and hauled in peas late in eve picked by some hands. John Fosselman bought 8 head of cattle here in morn. I hoed some onions in garden in morn.
Wed. 21st. Bright and pleasant from SE and no rain in sight. Willie and Dud hauled in corn all morn and picked peas in eve and some hands picked all day and Willie hauled all late in eve. Wilbur Beckham dined here today. I packed 13 turns of cow manure from big back gate to garden and put in water furrows of winter onions by 11 1/2 in morn and grabbled some yams on H ridge in eve, and picked some peas for pigs too.
Thu. 22nd. Bright and pleasant from SE and no rain in sight. Willie and Dud and some hands picked peas today and hauled them late in eve. I packed 10 turns of manure from mule stable and put in water furrows of strawberries in garden in morn.
Fri. 23rd. Bright and dry and pleasant from E. Willie and hands picked peas today and hauled them late in eve. I packed 12 turns of stable manure and put on strawberries in morn and shucked corn and got wood and drew water and patched milk shelf in cow pen in eve.
Sat. 24th. Bright, but cloudy some all day, and a pleasant breeze from E. Willie fixed gallery room of Pa's old room to put peas in in morn and hauled peas picked by some hands by 11 3/4 and Willie and Minnie drove Sandy to town in eve. I packed 12 turns of stable manure and put on strawberries and finished them in morn and patched one of my shoes and grabbled some yams in eve.
Sun. 25th. Cloudy all day and a damp and cool breeze from NE but very dry. Dixie and her 2 little boys and Mrs. Chambers here most of day and Rena and Nellie and John here too. Wiley and Bernice went to Jack D's in morn. We put our 6 milk cows in Gate cut patch in morn and Rabbit's heifer died there with blackleg (we think).
Mon. 26th. Cloudy and no sun and a very cool wind from N all day and chilly late in eve and misted rain a little late in eve. Willie rode Sandy to court in morn and was drawn on grand jury and returned at dusk. Dud buried the calf in Gate cut patch, which died on yesterday, in morn, and picked peas with a crowd of hands in eve and hauled all of peas in 2 loads late in eve. Marion and I weighed them. I packed stable manure in garden most of morn and cut up wood.
Tue. 27th. Bright, nearly clear, and a cold wind from N all day but pleasant in sun after 10 in morn. Willie rode Sandy to court in morn and returned late in eve. I packed manure in garden most of morn and weighed peas twice in eve which Dud and other hands picked today - 2 loads of them.
Wed. 28th. Clear and a very white and killing frost in morn but didn't seem to hurt sugar cane. Willie rode Sandy to court in morn and returned after sunset - the grand jury finished today. Dud and hands picked peas today and hauled them late in eve in 2 loads. Marion and I weighed the peas. I cut up good deal of wood in morn.
Thu. 29th. Clear and a little frost in morn but pleasant in sun after 10 in morn. I cut up good deal of wood in morn and shucked and shelled some bread corn and some in eve and grabbled some yams in eve. Willie and Dud pulled corn in morn and some in eve and hauled in 2 loads of peas in eve, picked by hands.
Fri. 30th. Clear and very cool and dry. Willie and Dud hauled in corn most of day and hauled in 2 loads of peas late in eve and paid up the hands. I shelled some bread corn in morn after cutting up wood and winnowed it in eve and got wood and water and fed. I have a cold in head and throat.
Sat. 31st. Bright, nearly clear, and very cool and dry from E. Willie rode Sandy and Dud drove the wagon to town in morn and carried nearly 3 bus of corn to mill and they returned at 2 1/2 in eve. I was feverish all day and all night with a cold and asthma and slept but little at night but I was going all day.
