OCTOBER 1913

Wed. Oct. 1st. Cloudy and ----- and rained slowly at 12 1/2 to 1 1/2 ----- dropped some most of eve. Willie and Marion and I dug pindars most of morn in mud and Willie and Ben and Marion dug in eve too. I put pindars out on gallery in eve and grabbled some yams and got wood and fed and helped to milk in eve.

Thu. 2nd. Cloudy some all day, but bright, and no rain today and ground dried some by late in eve. Willie and Ben and Marion dug pindars most of day (I helped them in morn) and they finished in eve late. I got wood and water and fed in eve and brought 6 long canes from field to thresh pecans in eve.

Fri. 3rd. Bright and pleasant from NE and no rain in sight. Willie and Ben pulled corn all day and left it in field. I threshed 2 pecan trees in morn and gathered 1 p'k of big pecans and I grabbled some yams in eve and got wood and water and fed and helped to milk.

Sat. 4th. Bright early in morn but cloudy after 9 1/2 in morn and a damp breeze from SE but no rain. Nellie and Bernice and Carmel drove Wiley's team to Surry to town in morn and returned at 2 1/2 in eve. Willie and Ben hauled in corn all morn and finished all pulled. Willie drove Sandy to town in eve. I sifted dirt out of all of pindars on gallery (nearly 6 bbls) in morn and put them back on gallery in eve.

Sun. 5th. Cloudy and began to rain slowly from SE at 10 in morn and in showers at 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 and we had a big rain at 7 to 12 at night with some thunder. Wiley and family here most of day and Mrs. Julia Mathis and sister Lottie and baby came at 11 in morn and Julia went to Lewis' in eve and Lottie and baby went back to town.

Mon. 6th. Bright and warm from W and no rain today. Willie and Ben patched wire fence around our field in morn and pulled corn in eve. I threshed the pecan tree in NE corner of grove in morn and Charles and I got over 1 p'k of large ones in morn and I shucked some bread corn in eve and picked up some pecans. Carmel and Marion went to school today.

Tue. 7th. Foggy and wet ---- morn and bright till 3 1/2 in eve ---a little shower from SE ------. Willie and Ben and Dick pulled corn and hauled in corn ------. I threshed and gathered pecans in morn and got 1 p'k big ones and I shucked some bread corn in eve.

Wed. 8th. Foggy and wet till 9 1/2 in morn and bright and warm till 3 1/2 in eve and we had a little shower then and cloudy balance of eve. Willie and Ben pulled corn today and left it in field. I threshed and got 1 p'k of big pecans in morn and shelled some bread corn in eve. Carmel and Marion walked to prayer meeting at night.

Thu. 9th. Foggy and wet till 9 1/2 in morn and bright and warm most of day afterward and we had a sprinkle of rain at 3 in eve. Willie and Ben and Tobe Stewart's son hauled in corn most of day and finished all pulled. I threshed and gathered a few pecans today and shelled some bread corn early in morn and fixed a scaffold in flower yard and sunned the corn and winnowed it in eve (6 p'ks).

Fri. 10th. Bright and warm but some clouds all day and no rain. Willie and Ben and Jimmy Stewart pulled corn all day and left it in field. I threshed and gathered pecans most of morn and picked up some in eve and got wood and water and fed and helped to milk in eve.

Sat. 11th. Cloudy and a cloud blew up from NW at 8 in morn and rained in little showers till 10 and cloudy and cool from NW balance of day and clear all night. Willie and Ben and Jim Stewart hauled in corn all morn and Willie and Marion drove Sandy to town in eve. I rode Sandy to Ogden's in morn and rain stopped me at B C's awhile and I swapped 3 p'ks of corn for meal with Ogden and returned at 10 1/4. I gathered a few pecans and grabbled some yams in eve.

Sun. 12th. Clear and quite cool from N all day. I walked to Wiley's and back in morn. Willie and Minnie and children walked to SS in eve and Bro Hopper preached there and went back to town. Nellie and Charles stayed with Rena in eve.

Mon. 13th. Clear and quite cool early in morn but a pleasant day -wind from E. Willie and Ben and Jim Stewart pulled corn till 2 1/2 in eve and finished all in big field and hauled in 2 loads late in eve. I threshed 2 pecan trees at big gate at road and gathered 1 p'k of small ones in morn and I shucked some bread corn and grabbled some yams in eve.

Tue. 14th. Bright and cool ----. Willie and Ben hauled in corn ---- and finished all by late in eve. I gathered all of green tomatoes (one bu) in field early in morn and gathered some pecans by 12 and shucked some bread corn in eve. Willie put all of his hogs in big field at 10 in morn.

Wed. 15th. Bright, but cloudy all day, and pleasant from SE. Willie and Ben picked peas today. I shelled 3 1/2 p'ks of bread corn early in morn and sunned it in flower yard and I gathered some pecans in morn and a few in eve and grabbled some yams in eve. All but Nellie and me and Charles and Carl went to prayer meeting at night.

Thu. 16th. Warm and cloudy and a damp wind from S till 3 in eve and rained 2 showers here at 3 to 4 1/2 in eve, which made ground muddy. Willie and Ben picked peas till the rain. I threshed and gathered pecans most of day.

Fri. 17th. It began to rain slowly from SW at 4 1/2 in morn and rained pretty hard at 8 to 9 1/2 and quit and cloudy some all eve. I picked out one bu of seed pindars on gallery at 8 to 9 1/2 in morn and picked up pecans till 12 and grabbled some yams in eve too. Willie rode Sandy to Henderson's place in eve and returned at 3 3/4 with 6 1/2 p'ks of meal and Willie and Marion went hunting late in eve and killed 3 squirrels and 2 birds and one rabbit. Mrs. Julia Mathis came here late in eve from Lewis'.

Sat. 18th. Cloudy and cool from N all day and began to drizzle rain late in eve and a thunder cloud came up from NW at 8 1/2 at night and rained a hard little shower till 9 and quit and cloudy all night. Willie picked peas in morn and drove Sandy to town in eve and carried 2 bu of big pecans and over one bu of small ones and sold them for $15.75. I gathered pecans most of morn and grabbled some yams in eve.

Sun. 19th. Bright and very cool from NW. I walked to Wiley's and back at 12 to 2 1/2 in eve. Willie and Minnie and Marion and Mrs. Mathis walked to SS in eve. Earl and Steve and Bernice and Carmel went in Surry to Mrs. Morris' in morn and returned at dusk.

Mon. 20th. Clear and a chilly wind from NW all day but calm all night and not quite cold enough for frost. Willie picked peas today. I picked some pepper early in morn and picked up some pecans in morn and in eve too and got nearly one p'k.

Tue. 21st. Bright, nearly clear, and a little frost in morn but ----S and pleasant after 10 in morn. -------Sandy drove ------ our buggy to fair in town in morn and returned late in eve. Marion went on wagon with Lewis and boys and Wiley and family and Julia went on Surry. Charles and I gathered more than a p'k of pecans today.

Wed. 22nd. Cloudy and a damp wind from S all day and a thunder cloud came up from NW at 9 1/2 in night and rained nearly all night - a big one in all. Willie picked peas today. I hoed onions and part of turnips in garden in morn and picked up some pecans in eve.

Thu. 23rd. It rained most of last night and cloudy and chilly from NW all day and drizzled rain some in morn and some in eve. I got wood for Hannah to wash early in morn and picked up pecans most of day and got one p'k. Willie cut and ricked some seed cane in eve.

Fri. 24th. Cloudy some all day but bright and very cool from NW. Willie picked peas in morn. Gordon brought a mess of fish at 10 in morn and left at 3 in eve. I gathered one p'k of pecans today.

Sat. 25th. Clear and very cool from NW early in morn but a pleasant day. Nellie and Mrs. Mathis drove Josie to Mrs. Mathis' home in morn to stay till tomorrow. Willie went hunting in morn and rode Sandy to town in eve. I gathered one p'k of pecans in morn and grabbled some yams too and I put pindars off gallery into 5 bbls in eve and got wood and water and fed and milked.

Sun. 26th. Clear and cool in morn and clouded up late in eve and a thunder cloud came up from NW at dark and we had a hard little shower at 8 1/2 and blew chilly from NW all night. Chunk and Earl here at 10 to 11 1/2 in morn. Willie and children walked to SS in eve. Rena here in eve. Nellie and Mrs. Mathis returned at dusk.

Mon. 27th. Bright, nearly clear, and a chilly wind from NW all day and calm all night. Willie helped to dig Wiley's potatoes today. Wiley attended Court as a road witness today. I cut up good deal of wood early in morn and picked up pecans in morn and some in eve too and grabbled some yams in eve too.

Tue. 28th. Clear till late in eve and a good deal of frost in morn which scorched vegetation some but wind from S and good deal warmer in eve and some clouds. Willie at Wiley's most of morn and rode Sandy to town in eve to see about selling his hogs. I picked up pecans in morn and some in eve too.

Wed. 29th. It rained slowly ---- NW just before day and blew ---- there most of day and clear ----- calm all night. Willie patched wagon body in morn and put in a --- coupling pole and patched up hog pen at back of garden in eve and helped me to get cows from field late in eve. We put them in there first time in morn. I got wood for Hannah to wash in morn and picked up pecans in morn and in eve too.

Thu. 30th. Clear and frost in morn and a cold wind from E of N or NE all day. Willie plowed up the potatoes with the mules in patch E of here till 2 1/2 in eve and hauled them late in eve in 2 loads. Hannah and Sophia and I picked up potatoes behind the plow.

Fri. 31st. Bright, nearly clear, and nearly cold enough to freeze in morn and a cold NE wind all day. We dug potatoes today as on yesterday and Willie hauled them in 3 loads in eve (late). I got wood and water and fed in eve.
