OCTOBER 1902
Wed. Oct. 1st. Bright, nearly clear, and pleasant from N. Willie and Henry and I picked cotton in morn in Sandy corner on branch in Luckett field and we finished there and we picked in new ground in back of our field in eve and hauled it at 12 and again late in eve with Joe and cart. Sims' hands (6) picked cotton for Wiley today and he got wagon and hauled it in eve. Nellie at Wiley's all day. Willie got up mules late in eve from cow pasture and I milked all of cows (6) after sunset.
Thu. 2nd. Bright and warm most of day from S but rained around SW and W of here from S in thundershowers in sight most of eve but none here. Nellie and Minnie and Bernice and Carmell walked to B C's in morn and returned late in eve. Willie and Henry and I took wagon (with Francis and Ella) to Luckett field early in morn and pulled corn on other side of creek and we hauled a load at 12 and Willie made coffee for our dinner and Willie and Henry hauled another load in eve and I got wood and water and parched coffee and we loaded up our wagon with cotton at hay house at 4 to 5 and Tigner D and little Henderson came with their wagon at 5 1/4 and they loaded it too to haul to Cohen's gin on tomorrow and Tigner and Henderson stayed here all night.
Fri. 3rd. Cloudy and warm and a damp wind from SW till 11 in morn and a thunder cloud came up then from N of W and we had a big rain and some wind at 11 to 12 and bright and pleasant from W in eve. Tigner D and Henry drove the 2 wagons of cotton to Cohen's gin starting at good daylight and Willie rode Joe and they returned at 1 1/4. Willie sold the seed and we loaded up the 2 wagons again at 2 1/2 to 4 and Wiley helped us and Tigner took his 2 mules home late in eve. I drew water and got some wood for Nellie and Minnie to wash early in morn and grabbled some yams and Queens on hilltop of Persimmon cut and picked up some pecans in morn and I picked up some late in eve too. Nellie went to Wiley's in eve and Bernice came back with her and staid all night.
Sat. 4th. Bright and sun shined all day and cool from W of N and no signs of rain. Willie and Tigner D and Henry carried 2 wagon loads of cotton to Cohen's gin at daylight in morn. Willie rode on Tigner's wagon and they returned at 1 1/2 with seed and didn't get enough seed and Willie rode Joe back to Cohen's late in eve to see about seed and returned at dark. Wiley drove Joe to town in morn. I packed some beech wood from cow pen and put handles (old ones) in 2 rakes and 1 hoe and Bernice and I gathered about 1 1/2 pecks of pecans in morn and some in eve too and I carried them home for her late in eve.
Sun. 5th. Bright and quite cool from W of N with a breeze all day but pleasant in sunshine and no signs of rain. Wiley rode to his Pa's in morn and I walked to Wiley's in morn and Rena and Bernice and baby came back with me at 9 and Nellie and Rena and Bernice walked to Clara's and I went as far as creek and carried baby and got back at 10 1/4. Willie and Minnie and Carmell drove Joe to Clara's in eve. I walked in cow pasture at 1 to 2 1/4 and saw all of cattle.
Mon. 6th. Bright, nearly clear, and very cool early in morn and seemed cold enough for a little frost but I didn't see any and wind from W of N and no signs of rain. Rena and her 2 children here all day quilting and Wiley dined here too. Willie and Henry and I gathered 1 wagon load of corn (a very full one) in Luckett field beyond creek in morn and unloaded it by 12 and got all on other side of creek - making 3 full loads in all and about 55 bbls - and we pulled and hauled a full load in eve on this side of creek near ford and unloaded it before sunset 3/4 of an hour. We hauled with Francis and Ella to wagon.
Tue. 7th. Clear and quite cool early in morn but calm and pleasant after 10 in morn. Willie and Henry and I threshed the pecan tree just W of our house early in morn and got 1 peck and we hauled 1 wagon load of corn from Luckett field and unloaded it by 11 3/4 and we pulled and hauled 1 load in eve and unloaded it 1/2 hour by sun. We hauled in 6 wagon loads in all from Luckett field - about 120 bbls - and left about 15 bbls there on hilltop. I had a dull headache most of day but it left me in eve late and Willie had it too and bad all eve.
Wed. 8th. Clear and cool and calm. Willie and Henry and I took wagon with Francis and Ella to Wiley's early in morn and helped him to pull and haul in his corn most of day and we hauled in 2 wagon loads in morn and 1 and part of 1 in eve and got in about 65 or 70 bbls and most of it was light for his corn crop is very poor. We loaded our wagon with cotton at hay house late in eve to take to gin on tomorrow. Nellie at Wiley's all day and night too.
Thu. 9th. Bright and cool early in morn but cloudy a little and warmer in eve. Tigner D came early in morn (at sunrise) and we loaded his wagon with cotton at hay house and got all picked and he and Henry carried the 2 loads of cotton to Cohen's gin and Henry brought back all of seed of 2 loads late in eve. Willie rode Joe and went on to Cohen's and then to town and back to Cohen's and sold all of our cotton (6 heavy bales) to Cohen at 8 1/16 cents and paid all owing there and got a check for balance - about $121 and some cents - and returned late in eve. I grabbled some yams on hilltop of Persimmon cut and picked all of ripe pepper in garden in morn and strung it at 11 in morn to 2 1/2 in eve and got wood and water and helped Henry to put cotton seed in old cotton house in eve. Rena and her 2 children here in eve and Mrs. Henderson and Cook here too.
Fri. 10th. Cloudy and calm and looked like rain all morn and did drop some but bright and cool from W in eve. Henry and I picked peas (our first) most of morn in water hole cut and Willie picked there with us in eve. Willie and Nellie drove Joe to town in morn and paid Metzger and Cohen and Adams and got some things and returned at 12 1/2.
Sat. 11th. Foggy and wet and cool till 9 in morn and bright and pleasant from N balance of day. Willie and Henry and I picked peas on W side of Cherry cut all morn. Mrs. and Dr. Hunnicutt and Mrs. Baker here today and left at 3 in eve. Willie and Wiley and I gathered about 1 peck of pecans from tree SW of barn in eve. Carmell took a chill and fever at 3 1/2 in eve and Willie drove Joe to town at 4 1/4 to 7 1/2 and got some Calomel tablets and Quinine syrup for her and they gave her the Calomel at night. Wiley and Rena and children here most of eve.
Sun. 12th. Bright but some dark clouds and appearance of rain and wind from S. Nellie and Clara and Effie at Wiley's most of day. I gathered some pecans most of morn in orchard N of house and got about 1 1/2 pecks in all. Carmell had no fever today and was lively and seemed better and took Quinine syrup in morn. I walked to Wiley's late in eve. Wiley had vertigo most of day and Willie is complaining.
Mon. 13th. Cloudy and warm all morn and no sun and began to rain slowly at 11 1/4 and lasted most of eve and a good rain in all (from S of W). Willie and Henry and I picked peas in morn till 11 1/4 and rained stopped us and we hauled them with Joe and cart. We didn't work in eve on account of rain. I patched my cotton sack by sewing new lowell on bottom and put up a step to back door and got wood and water.
Tue. 14th. Bright and cool from W of N all day. Willie and Henry and I picked peas all day in Pine corner and in SW corner and hauled them at 12 and again late in eve with Joe and cart. I awoke at 12 1/2 in night and coughed awhile but lay in bed till 2 1/2 and got cold and got up. Bernice here all night.
Wed. 15th. Bright, nearly clear, and nearly cold enough for frost in morn and wind from N and cool all day. Willie and Henry and I began early in morn and picked peas in Luckett field in cut above ford on this side of branch all day and hauled them at 12 and again late in eve with Joe and cart. Nellie at Wiley's all day.
Thu. 16th. Bright, nearly clear, and nearly cold enough for frost in morn and cool and dry from N all day. Willie rode Joe and Henry his mare and I drove Ella mule to cart to Luckett field and we picked peas there all day on this side of branch and I hauled them at 12 and again in eve with mule and cart. I stopped and grabbled some potatoes on hilltop of Persimmon cut at 1 1/4 in eve. I had a dull headache most of day but it left me late in eve. I have some cold in my head and throat and coughed some with it.
Fri. 17th. Bright, nearly clear, and nearly cold enough for frost in morn and dry and cool all day and calm. Willie and Henry and I picked peas all day in Luckett field on this side of branch and I hauled them at 12 and again late in eve with Joe and cart. Wiley went to his Pa's in eve. They sent for him to come - his brother, John is quite sick and Nellie staid with Rena and children at night. My cough awoke me at 1 1/2 but I staid in bed till 3 1/4 and got up then.
Sat. 18th. Bright and cool and dry but some clouds in eve and warmer. Willie and Henry and I picked peas all morn on S side of old Cane hollow and hauled them at 12 with mule. Willie rode Joe and Henry drove Ella and Jack to wagon to town in eve and got a bbl of flour for us and one for Wiley. Nellie and Rena and 2 children drove Jim mule to Jack D's in eve and Wiley still there since yesterday. John D died in eve. I picked about 1/2 bu of red pepper in garden and got wood and water and fed Wiley's cows and hogs at dusk.
Sun. 19th. Bright but cloudy some and pleasant in morn and a thunder cloud came up from SW slowly in eve and rained slowly at 4 1/2 to 8 at night and rained hard part of time. I attended to Wiley's cows and chickens and hogs early in morn and again late in eve. Lewis and West here in morn and Buddy and Gordon and little Bud in eve. Willie and Tigner D went to John D's burying in eve and returned at 8 at night soaking wet. Nellie and Rena and children and Wiley didn't return. I milked and fed in rain and got wet some in eve.
Mon. 20th. We had a good rain on yesterday eve and cloudy some but bright and warm today from NE till late in eve and a thundercloud came up from NE and we had a slow rain at 5 to 6 1/2 in eve. Willie and I packed some wood early in morn and we and Henry picked peas in old Cane hollow at 9 to 12 in morn and in eve till 4 1/2 and rain stopped us. Wiley and Nellie and Rena and children returned from Jack D's at 1 1/2 in eve.
Tue. 21st. Bright and pleasant from NE and no rain in sight today. Willie and Henry and I picked peas all day in old Cane hollow all morn and finished there and in 3rd Cane hollow in eve and I hauled them at 12 and again late in eve with mule and cart. I carried a bbl of flour to Wiley's early in morn and I stopped and grabbled some potatoes (about 3 pks) on hilltop of Persimmon cut just after dinner.
Wed. 22nd. Bright and pleasant from E all day but a damp breeze from SE and some clouds at night. Willie and Henry and I picked peas all day in 3rd Cane hollow and hauled them at 12 and again late in eve with mule and cart. I arose at 1 1/2 in morn with cough and lay on floor awhile after cough was relieved by coughing.
Thu. 23rd. Bright and pleasant most of morn and cloudy in eve and rained a litle early in night from SE. Willie and Henry and I picked peas all day in 3rd Cane hollow and hauled them at 12 and again late in eve with mule and cart. Mrs. James and Luster and Annabel came late in eve and here all night. My head and throat seemed to be stopped up some in night and I slept but little. Bernice here all night.
Fri. 24th. Bright and warm from SE all morn and cloudy all eve and a thundercloud came up from SE in eve and rained a little here at 4 to 5. Willie and Henry and I picked peas in 3rd Cane hollow in SW corner till 4 in eve and rain ran us home then. Mrs. James and Annabel here again all day and night and Luster at Lewis' at night. I had a dull headache most of day but it left me late in eve and I slept pretty well at night.
Sat. 25th. Bright and nearly clear and warm from E and no rain in sight today. Mrs. James and her 2 children left for home in morn. Nellie and Minnie washed on washer in morn. Willie and Henry and I picked peas in SW corner all morn and hauled them with mule and cart at 12 1/4. Wiley drove Ella to buggy to town in eve. Dan and Willie went hunting in eve. I picked about 1/2 bu pepper in garden in eve and got wood and water. Rena and her 2 children here in eve.
Sun. 26th. Bright and pleasant from N and no rain in sight today. I walked to Wiley's early in morn and he went to his Pa's and Rena and 2 children came back with me at 9 1/4 and I picked a mess of butter beans in orchard and picked up a 1/2 peck of pecans by 12. Joe Miller brought Allen to Lewis' in morn to go to school. The school began on last Monday and Joe stopped here in eve and I gave him some pepper. Buddy and Gordon here in eve. I arose at 2 in morn with cough and choking and lay on floor till 5.
Mon. 27th. Bright and cool early in morn and clouded up from N at 8 1/2 but bright again from N and cool after midday. Willie and Henry and I picked peas all day in 2nd Cane hollow on N side and hauled them with Ella and cart at 12 and again late in eve. I grabbled some potatoes on hilltop of Persimmon cut just after dinner. Nellie walked to Dixie's early in morn and returned late in eve. Viola and Bernice went to school their first time today. I arose at 1 in morn with cough and choking but coffee relieved me and I slept on floor.
Tue. 28th. Clear and cool and dry from N and no sign of rain. Willie and Henry and I picked peas all day in water hole cut and in 2nd Cane hollow and hauled them at 12 and again late in eve with Ella. I arose at 1 1/2 in morn with cough and choking but coffee relieved me and I lay on floor till 5. I had a dull headache all morn but it left me in eve.
Wed. 29th. Clear and cold early in morn and some little frost, the first that we have seen, but calm and a pleasant and dry day after 10 in morn. Willie and Henry and I picked peas in 2nd Cane hollow in morn and hauled them at 12 with Ella and cart. Ray and Aunt Susan and Rose and Net picked peas for us most of day in Luckett field beyond branch and we took wagon to field (Luckett) and picked peas there on this side of branch in eve and hauled ours and what Ray's folks picked too home late in eve with Joe and Ella.
Thu. 30th. Clear and very cool early in but calm and pleasant after 10 in morn. Willie and Henry and I picked peas in Luckett field on this side of branch in morn and hauled them at 12 with mule and cart and Willie and Henry took wagon back there with Joe and mule just after dinner and picked. Ray's folks picked here beyond branch today and Joe balked with wagon at branch late in eve and Henry came home and got Jack mule and they got load of peas home after sunset at dusk. I got wood and drew water for Nellie and Minnie to wash (on machine) just after dinner and I picked peas on hilltop of H ridge most of eve. I arose at 11 at night with cough and choking and made and drank some coffee and went back to bed and rested and slept pretty well till nearly 5 in morn.
Fri. 31st. Bright but some clouds and cool _______ and dry. Willie and Henry and I picked peas most of day on H ridge and packed them in hay house. Ray's folks (4 of them) picked peas for us in Luckett field today and finished all of that field but a little and Willie and Henry hauled their peas late in eve with Ella and Jack. Willie paid them up for picking. I arose at 11 at night with cough and wheezing and made and drank some coffee and went back to bed and slept some.
