OCTOBER 1901
Tue. Oct. 1st. Bright and warm but some dark clouds most of day. Willie and Jim picked cotton all day in 2nd Cane hollow and I hauled it late in eve. I picked cotton all morn and a little in eve in orchard and got wood and picked peas for hogs in eve. John Chambers and Ed Ogden ate supper here and they and Seymour left at 8 3/4 at night and Gordon stayed with Pa at night. I had a dull headache all day and night too.
Wed. 2nd. Bright and dry and pleasant from NE. Willie and Jim picked cotton all day in 2nd Cane hollow and I hauled it late in eve and I picked cotton all morn in orchard and I gathered and hauled in a cartload of corn from Pine corner and fence row cut (for bread) and picked peas in Gate cut for hogs in eve. West and Tigner stayed with Pa at night. Wiley hauled 2 loads of cotton to Cohen's gin today with mare mule and Jack to new wagon. Steve Luckett here at 7 to 9 at night to see Pa.
Thu. 3rd. Bright, nearly clear, and cool and dry from NE. Willie and Jim picked cotton all day in 2nd Cane hollow and I hauled it late in eve. I picked cotton most of morn in orchard and I shucked some bread corn and packed and cut up wood and picked peas in Gate cut for hogs and Joe in eve. Dixie and her baby boy here awhile in eve.
Fri. 4th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool and dry from E. Willie and Jim picked cotton in 2nd Cane hollow all day and I hauled it late in eve. I picked in orchard most of morn and finished all but a little there. I got wood and shelled some breadcorn and picked some peas in Gate cut for hogs and Joe in eve. B C came at dark and stayed with Pa at night.
Sat. 5th. Bright and cool and dry and calm. Willie and Jim picked cotton in 2nd Cane hollow in morn and I hauled it at 12. Willie rode Joe to town in eve. Wiley hauled his 3rd bale to Cohen's in morn and returned in eve. I rode Joe and carried 5 pecks of corn to Wade's mill early in morn and Tigner D went with me and I returned at 9 1/2 and grabbled some yams in Gate cut by 11 and I packed and cut up some wood and saved some okra and bean seed in orchard and picked peas in Gate cut for hogs and Joe in eve. West and Tigner stayed with Pa at night.
Sun. 6th. Bright and cool and dry and wind from E. Nellie at Wiley's most of day and Clara here. I packed up some wood early in morn and picked some peas on SW corner of Gate cut for hogs at 9 3/4 and I walked to Wiley's at 2. Nellie and Rena and Bernice came back with me at 3 1/4 and Wiley came on after us too. Gordon stayed with Pa at night.
Mon. 7th. Bright but some clouds and a damp breeze from SE. Willie and Jim picked cotton most of day in locust ground and I hauled it late in eve. I picked cotton most of morn in orchard and I picked peas in Gate cut for hogs and Joe and got wood in eve and Willie and Jim got up mules late in eve and loaded wagon at dusk to dark. Lewis and Tigner stayed with Pa at night.
Tue. 8th. Cloudy and no sun and rained slowly most of morn from 5 1/2 to 11 and some in eve till 3 but not enough to run. Willie started to Cohen's gin at daylight with 1 bale and returned at 12 and we loaded up wagon and he and Jim started at 2 again and returned at 7 3/4 at night. They hauled all picked, making 5 bales in all, with the other ginning. Jim and I fixed one of cart wheels by wrapping it with barbed wire and packed and cut up some wood by 10 in morn and got nearly wet in rain. I picked some peas for hogs and got some vines for cows and mules in eve. Wiley stayed with Pa at night and Tigner stayed at Wiley's.
Wed. 9th. Cloudy some but bright and warm and no rain. Willie and Jim picked peas in Luckett field most of day and hauled them late in eve in wagon with Joe and mule. I picked peas on NE corner of Cherry cut (old watermelon ground) at 8 to 12 in morn after I unloaded wagon of cotton seed and I got wood and picked peas in Gate cut for hogs and milked cows in eve. West and Tigner stayed with Pa at night.
Thu. 10th. Bright and pleasant from E and no rain in sight. Willie and Jim took wagon to Luckett field early in morn and picked peas there most of day. They rode home at dinner and hauled the peas late in eve. I picked peas all morn and some in eve on hilltop of Persimmon cut and got 110 besides those for hogs and Joe. I had a dull headache all day but it went off at night. Lewis and Gordon stayed with Pa at night.
Fri. 11th. Bright, but cloudy all day, and a damp breeze from SE and dropped rain a little late in eve and rained hard late in night. Willie and Jim picked peas in Luckett field today and hauled them in wagon late in eve. I picked peas all morn on hilltop of Persimmon cut and got 106 and I packed and cut up wood and picked peas for hogs and horses in eve. West and Tigner staid with Pa at night.
Sat. 12th. We had a pretty good rain late in night (last night) and quit at daylight and bright and cool from NW all day. Willie and Jim picked peas all morn and hauled them and mine too at 12 1/4. (I picked all morn on hilltop of Persimmon cut). I picked some for hogs and horses in eve. Willie drove Joe to new buggy to town in eve. Gordon staid with Pa at night.
Sun. 13th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool from NW. Wiley went to his Pa's in morn and Rena and Bernice here most of day and Buddy and Cousin Gus and B C and Dixie and her 2 little children here most of day. B C came back after dark and staid all night with Pa. Clara and Tigner D drove Jim mule to our new buggy to Tigner Newman's early in morn to see Mary - she has been in bed for a long time. I grabbled some yams in Gate cut and packed some wood in morn early and Bernice and I got some Persimmons in field at 10 1/2 in morn.
Mon. 14th. Bright, nearly clear, and very cool (and a little frost) early in morn and cool and dry from W of N all day. Willie and Jim picked peas in Luckett field all day and hauled them in wagon late in eve. I packed wood from NW of orchard (7 turns) and cut it up by 9 1/2 and picked peas on hilltop of Persimmon cut till 12 and picked some there for hogs and horses at 2 to 4 in eve and grabbled some yams in Gate cut at 4 to 5. Gordon and West stayed with Pa at night.
Tue. 15th. Clear and a little frost in morn - but not enough to kill vegetation - and a dry and cool breeze from NE. Willie and Jim picked peas in Luckett field and hauled them late in eve with wagon with Joe and mule. I picked peas all morn on hilltop of Cherry cut and I picked some there at 3 to 5 in eve for hogs and horses. I packed and cut up wood at 1 to 3. Tigner stayed with Pa at night. The little blue sow which Willie swapped to Wiley gave birth to 5 pigs last night in calf pasture but she lay on one and killed it.
Wed. 16th. Clear and a very little frost in morn and calm and dry. Willie and Jim picked peas all day in Luckett field and hauled them late in eve on wagon. I picked peas all morn on hilltops of Cherry and Persimmon cuts and picked some there for hogs and horses at 3 to 5 in eve. I packed and cut up wood at 1 to 3 in eve. Gordon staid with Pa at night.
Thu. 17th. Clear and cool and dry from N. Willie and Jim picked peas in Luckett field and hauled them on wagon late in eve at dusk. I drove Joe to cart to Cohen's early in morn and got a bbl of flour and returned at 10 1/4 and got some pea vines for Joe and mule and cows and packed up some wood by 12 and I picked peas for hogs and horse and cut up wood and grabbled some yams in eve. Mrs. Johnson and Minnie here in eve.
Fri. 18th. Clear and cool and dry from NE. Willie picked peas all day in Luckett field and Jim picked there too till 10 in morn and went to Stewart place then to his aunt's burying and didn't return today. I picked peas all morn on hilltop of Cherry cut and picked some there in eve for hogs and horses and packed and cut up some wood. Gordon staid with Pa at night.
Sat. 19th. Clear and cool and dry and calm. Willie and Jim picked peas all morn in Luckett field and hauled them and what they picked on yesterday in wagon at 12 1/4. I picked peas all morn on hilltop of Cherry cut and I picked some in eve on NE corner of Persimmon cut for hogs and horses and got wood and milked and fed. Jim picked cotton most of eve in 3rd Cane hollow for 25/c and Willie drove Joe to town in eve and got the gun which he sent for and returned at dusk. Tigner stayed with Pa at night.
Sun. 20th. Cloudy from S all day and a damp breeze and dropped rain some in eve and clear at night. Wiley and Rena and Bernice and Gussie D dined here and Seymour here too in eve. Lewis borrowed our buggy at daylight to take children to Aunt Mary's and they returned late in eve. I packed and cut up some wood and grabbled some yams in Gate cut and shaved early in morn.
Mon. 21st. Clear and cool and dry from NE. Willie and Jim picked cotton in Luckett field today and left it there on ground. Three hands picked peas on halves in Luckett field today and Willie hauled all of them here on wagon late in eve. Clara here today. I fixed shed on W side of cotton house putting in a picket floor to put cotton in by 9 in morn and I picked cotton in orchard till 12 and I picked peas for hogs and horses and got wood in eve.
Tue. 22nd. Clear and cool and dry from NE. Willie and Nellie and Minnie all sick with sore throat and fever today and Willie had high fever and took Calomel and was sick and restless all night. Jim and I took wagon to Luckett field early in morn and Picked cotton there on hilltop till 12 and hauled home all picked there in morn and on yesterday too and Jim and I got some vines for cows and horses and picked some peas for hogs and horses at 2 to 3 3/4 in eve and took wagon to Luckett field and Jim hauled George Banion peas (228) to his house late in eve. Rena and Bernice here all day and Wiley part of day.
Wed. 23rd. Clear and cool and dry. Jim and I picked cotton all morn in orchard and we picked some peas for hogs and horses and hauled George Banion's peas here (191) from Luckett field late in eve. Willie and Minnie both sick at night and none of us slept but little.
Thu. 24th. Bright and cool and dry from N. Jim and I took wagon to Luckett field early in morn and picked a few peas on branch and hauled about 8 bbls of corn for bread from there by 10 3/4 in morn and we hauled a wagon load of dry wood from back of field by 12 1/4 and we shucked some bread corn and cut up some wood and hauled Wash. White's peas to his house from Luckett field late in eve. Mrs. James and Mary and little Annabel came at 12 1/4 and went to Lewis' late in eve. Rena and Bernice here all day (and yesterday too) and all night too and Wiley and Doug dined here yesterday and today too. Minnie and Willie both right sick all day with fever and sore throat and all night too and none of us slept but very little at night.
Fri. 25th. Bright and cool and dry. Jim rode Joe to Cohen's and back by 9 in morn and he and I shelled one bbl of breadcorn by 11 1/4 and cut up some wood and got some vines for horses by 12 and Jim picked cotton on H ridge and I picked some peas for hogs and horses in Gate cut at 1 1/2 to 3 1/4 and we took wagon to Luckett field and hauled George Bannion's peas (368) to his house late in eve. Mrs. James and Annabel here most of day and they went to Seymour's late in eve. Willie and Minnie both better in eve but the baby had fever in eve and all night. Rena and Bernice went home late in eve and all of us slept some at night.
Sat. 26th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool and dry from N. Jim picked cotton on H ridge in morn and didn't work in eve. I drove Joe to cart early in morn and carried 3 bu. corn for us and 2 for Wiley to Wade's mill and got it ground and returned at 10 3/4 and got some vines and hauled in some cotton from H ridge by 11 1/2 and I grabbled some yams in Gate cut and picked some peas there too in eve and killed 1 squirrel in Sims' calf pasture late in eve. Willie and Minnie both up and better today but the baby had fever all day.
Sun. 27th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool from N and very dry. Wiley went to his Pa's in morn early and Rena and Bernice here all day and Billy Lindsey here most of day. I picked some peas for hogs and horses in hollow in Pine corner early in morn and got some vines too. Joe Miller and Sallie and their 3 children stopped to see Pa in eve (they had been to Lewis'). Seymour and West here in eve and Gordon staid with Pa at night.
Mon. 28th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool and dry. Jim picked cotton in Luckett field today and Willie picked there part of day - he was too weak to pick all day. I picked in orchard most of morn and I got wood and picked peas in Gate cut for hogs and horses and got some vines there and grabbled some yams there in eve.
Tue. 29th. Bright and cool and dry. Willie and Jim picked cotton all day in Luckett field and left it there on ground. I picked cotton all morn in hollow in orchard and finished there and I picked peas for hogs and horses in hollow in Pine corner and got wood and water and milked in eve. Tigner staid with Pa last night and Gordon at night.
Wed. 30th. Bright and cool and dry but some clouds most of day and warm in eve. Willie and Jim picked cotton all day in Luckett field and left it there on ground. I picked all morn on H ridge and I picked peas for hogs and horses in Gate cut and got vines too and got wood in eve. Lewis and B C came to Pa's room after dark and stayed awhile and Tigner staid all night. I had a dull headache all day and night too and slept but little.
Thu. 31st. Bright but cloudy some and warm and dry. Willie and Jim picked cotton most of day in Luckett field and hauled all picked there (nearly 1000 lbs) on wagon late in eve. I picked cotton all morn on hilltop of H ridge and got 71 and I got wood and picked peas in Pine corner for hogs and horses and got some potatoe vines on roadside of Gate cut for cows and calves and grabbled some yams there late in eve. My headache left me late in eve. Nellie was sick at night.
