OCTOBER 1895
Tue. Oct. 1st. Bright and very cool early in morn and again late in eve and at night and wind from N all day. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton all morn on W side of Cherry cut and Willie and I in old Cane hollow and Pa on H ridge all eve.
Wed. 2nd. Bright and very cool early in morn and dry and wind from N. Willie and I picked cotton all day in old Cane hollow and Pa picked there after 9 1/2 in morn. He finished H ridge by then.
Thu. 3rd. Bright, nearly clear, and cool and dry. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton all day in old Cane hollow.
Fri. 4th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool and dry and pleasant and beautiful weather. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton all day in old Cane hollow and finished there - 2nd picking - by late in eve. Mrs. Baker and Dixie drove Hattie to town in morn and returned in eve.
Sat. 5th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool and dry. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton all morn in orchard and I drove Hattie to Cohen's in eve and returned 3/4 of an hour by sun. Dixie and Rena walked to Clara's in eve. Lucy McGraw came at sunset and here all night.
Sun. 6th. Bright, nearly clear, and dry and pleasant. Wind from SW in eve and warmer. All of us home today. Mrs. Baker and Lucy McGraw and Bud here all day and B.C. and W.D. here all eve and till 8 3/4 at night. Dan and Lewis' children here in eve awhile late. I rode Hattie to Clara's in eve and carried some potatoes - about 1/2 bu..
Mon. 7th. Cloudy and began to rain from W or SW at 8 in morn in showers and lasted till 4 1/2 in eve and quit. It wet ground some but not thoroughly for it was quite dry. Pa. Willie and I picked cotton till 8 in morn in orchard and we picked peas just beyond road in little patch at 2 to 3 1/4 in eve. I made an auger handle for my bits and stopped some cracks in new barn floor and put a chain to door for fastening at 10 to 2 in eve.
Tue. 8th. Clear and cool with a N wind all day. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton on H ridge till 10 in morn and in orchard till 11 3/4 and Pa picked in orchard all eve and Willie and I picked little there late in eve. Willie and I killed and dressed the 2 pigs (which we had penned for nearly 3 weeks for getting out) at 1 to 3 3/4 in eve. Dixie and Rena drove Hattie to Primm's in eve. I was very feverish late yesterday eve and again late this eve and at night.
Wed. 9th. Clear and very nearly cold enough for frost in morn and too cool in shade in day. Cohen sent 3 wagons early in morn and carried 2 bales for me and 1 for Pa and Willie and they got through by 3 in eve and I sold to Cohen at 8 1/2 cts. and paid all owing him and had $5.59 over and I got 75 ft. well rope and 10 lbs. coffee and 5 sugar and a milk bucket and paid for them and returned 1 hour by sun. They brought my seed just before I returned. I had a dull headache all eve but it left me at night. Pa and Willie picked peas by front gate on E side from 9 to 12 in morn and they picked cotton in orchard and little on H ridge in eve.
Thu. 10th. Clear and very nearly cold enough for frost in morn but wind from SW and some clouds and warmer in eve. Pa picked and threshed peas for seed in bottom in Pine corner all day. Willie and I picked peas all morn in cut by front gate on E side and some on poor E end of Gate cut and we only got 100 lbs. and Willie and I picked cotton all eve on upper side of Cherry cut in Pa's and Willie's. Lewis borrowed some cotton seed at 1 to 2 in eve.
Fri. 11th. Cloudy some all day but bright and wind cool from N in eve. Pa picked and threshed peas all day in Pine corner hollow. Willie and I began and picked peas all morn on lower side of Pine corner and hauled them with Hattie and cart at 12. We picked cotton all eve on upper side of Cherry cut.
Sat. 12th. Cloudy and foggy and chilly from N or NE till 9 in morn and bright and dry balance of day. Pa, Willie and I picked peas in old turnip ground on lower side of Pine corner all morn and put up in hull. Nellie and I got sugar out of our molasses barrel and put in 2 sacks to drip at 1 1/4 to 2 1/2 in eve and I worked our field road on H ridge with hoe and grabbled some potatoes at 2 1/2 to 4 3/4. William McGraw borrowed buggy at 1 and returned at sunset and brought us a turkey.
Sun. 13th. Cloudy some all day but bright till 3 in eve and cool enough for fire all day. Nellie rode Hattie to Estina in morn and there all day. W D and Bud and Mrs. Baker here all day and B.C. here in eve and at night till 8 1/4 (and W.D. too). Cousin Tom and Aunt M at Lewis' today and Tom here most of eve.
Mon. 14th. Bright and cool and dry but sprinkled rain 2 or 3 times in eve. Pa picked and threshed peas all day in Pine corner and I picked there most of morn after taking our fat sow to Gussie's (to boar). Willie started with me and got his foot cut on the sow's tusk and lay up all morn. I picked cotton all eve in Cherry cut and Willie picked there most of eve. Nellie at Lewis' all day from before day till in eve. Cousin Mary gave birth to a son in morn.
Tue. 15th. Clear and cool and dry from NE. Pa picked and threshed peas all day in Pine corner and Willie and I picked peas most of morn in new SW corner and we picked cotton most of eve in Cherry cut. I drove our fat sow home from Gussie's at 1 o'clock. I arose with a dull headache and had it all day and all night and slept but little but I didn't vomit any.
Wed. 16th. Clear and cool and dry from N. Pa picked and threshed peas all day in Pine corner. Willie and I picked peas in new SW corner in morn and I hauled in 3 full cartloads of corn (the first) from lower part of Pine corner and old turnip patch ground there in eve and put in new barn. Willie didn't work in eve on account of his cut foot paining him.
Thu. 17th. Clear and cool and dry from N. Pa picked and threshed peas in Pine corner all day. Willie and I picked peas in NW corner all morn and I hauled in 3 full cartloads of corn from new SW corner in eve with Hattie. Willie didn't work in eve on account of his hurt foot.
Fri. 18th. Clear and cool and dry from N. Pa picked and threshed peas in new SW corner all day. Willie and I picked peas there in morn and I drove Hattie to cart to Cohen's in eve and got 1 bbl. flour and some other things and returned 1 1/2 hours by sun and rode to Gussie's at sunset to get a full chester sow pig but it was out and I didn't get it. Willie didn't work in eve on account of foot. Mrs. Baker and Nellie walked to Clara's in eve.
Sat. 19th. Clear and cool and dry from N. Pa, Willie and I picked peas (in hull) in new SW corner in morn and I hauled in 3 full cartloads of corn from there in eve with Hattie from hillside S of gully to gully. Willie laid up with his cut foot in eve.
Sun. 20th. Clear and quite cool early in morn and at night from N and very dry. Mrs. Baker and Joe Miller and Dan and Tigner dined here and Cousin Tom and W.D. and B.C. here in eve and Lewis and West, too. I grabbled some potatoes in Persimmon cut (on NE corner) early in morn and I found one red yam that weighed 4 1/2 lbs. and I rode Hattie to Clara's in eve and carried some potatoes.
Mon. 21st. Clear and very cool early in morn but a pleasant day and very dry. Pa picked cotton all day (in theirs) in Cherry cut and Willie picked in mine on H ridge. I rode Hattie to town early in morn and put her in stable and I was there till late in eve on Grand Jury. I returned at deep dusk.
Tue. 22nd. Clear and cool and very dry and dusty. Pa picked cotton all day in Cherry cut and Willie all day in mine on H ridge. I rode Hattie to town early in morn to Court and there all day and returned after dark.
Wed. 23rd. Clear and cool and very dry from N. Pa picked cotton all day in Cherry cut and Willie picked on H ridge all day. I rode Hattie to town early in morn to Court and there all day and returned at 7 1/4 (at dark).
Thu. 24th. Bright, nearly clear and cool and dry but warmer than yesterday. Pa picked cotton all day in Cherry cut (theirs) and Willie picked all day in Cane bottom (mine). I rode Hattie to town to Court early in morn and there till nearly sunset and returned at dark.
Fri. 25th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool and dry. Pa picked cotton all day in Cherry cut (in theirs) and Willie in Cane hollow. I rode Hattie to town early in morn to Court (Grand Jury) and there all day and we got through and were discharged and paid up late in eve. I received ten dollars and sixty cents (for five days work) and returned at dark.
Sat. 26th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool and dry but wind from SW and warmed in eve and at night. Nellie and Rena drove Gussie's mare to Dixie's buggy and I rode Hattie to town in morn and Nellie bought some clothing and had Rena's pictures taken and I paid my taxes and little bill ($1.25) at Lewis' drug store and we returned at 2 1/2. Bud here in eve and W.D. and Leroy and B.C. here to supper and Seymour came just before dark and stayed all night.
Sun. 27th. Bright but some clouds all day and warmer and thundered in W and NW most of eve and a cloud came up at 9 at night and rained a hard rain with some thunder. I grabbled some potatoes on NE corner of Persimmon cut early in morn. Mrs. Baker and Seymour and Joe Miller dined here. W.D. and B.C. took Dixie and Rena to Union church in morn and returned at 3 1/2 in eve and they were here till 8 1/4 at night.
Mon. 28th. Cloudy some all day but sun shined good deal and cooler from E of N. Pa picked cotton all day in Cherry cut (in theirs) and Willie and I picked all morn in Cane hollow and all eve in orchard. Lewis borrowed buggy early in morn and took Mrs. Baker to Clark Stuart's. Seymour left Lewis' for home in morn.
Tue. 29th. Cloudy and chilly and began to rain in slow showers or sprinkles from NE at 8 in morn and lasted all day and night too. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton till 8 1/2 in morn and rain stopped us and we packed and cut up some wood. Willie and I killed and dressed a black shoat (the one that was getting out through old water gap). I had to shoot it at 10 to 12 and Gussie brought the sow pig (chester) which he promised me at 11. I cut up and salted the pig in eve and picked a sack of peas by front gate and fixed front gate and packed and cut up some wood in eve. W.D. here in eve and till 8 at night.
Wed. 30th. It began to rain slowly in fine drops at daylight and continued all day and part of night from E. The rain increased after 12 and rained hard most of eve. Willie and I picked peas in new SW at 8 to 9 3/4 in morn and got cold and wet some and quit then. Gussie here to dinner and all eve. I had a dull headache all day and bad at night and couldn't sleep.
Thu. 31st. Cloudy and chilly and wet from N and drizzled rain some in eve and late at night. Willie and I picked peas most of day in new SW corner. The peas were rather wet in morn but just right in eve. Pa packed wood in morn and picked 20 of cotton in orchard in eve and cut up some wood. The headache left me in morn without vomiting any.
