OCTOBER 1893
Sun. Oct. 1st. Cloudy and rained in little showers from S at 11 to 1 and quit and cloudy all eve. All of us but Pa and Willie walked to Lewis' in morn and Hodges came and preached and came back with us to dinner and Misses Celia Deloach and Lillie Wheeler came too. I rode Salome to Clara's in eve - Mary and Tigner there.
Mon. 2nd. Cloudy some but bright and warm from NE and no rain. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton all day - in new SW corner in morn and on H ridge in eve. I had a dull headache all day and ate no supper and slept but little with it.
Tue. 3rd. Bright most of day after 9 in morn. It dropped or drizzled rain at night till 8 1/2 in morn. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton all day in new SW corner all morn and on H ridge all eve. My headache left me in eve.
Wed. 4th. Clear, quite cool early in morn and a very heavy dew, but a beautiful and pleasant day. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton all day - on H ridge in morn and new SW corner in eve and we got about 350 in all. Mrs Henderson and Mrs Cook here in eve awhile.
Thu. 5th. Bright and cool in morn from SW and warmer and cloudy and thundershowers passed around in eve and sprinkled here at 4 1/2 in eve and we had a hard shower at 1 in night from NW. Pa, Willie and I picked over hilltop of Cherry cut and finished there and finished new SW corner and then finished H ridge. Mr. Mabry Morris dined here today.
Fri. 6th. We had a good little shower at 1 in morn and bright and cool from NW today. Pa, Willie and I marked our pigs early in morn and we began and dug pinders all day on hilltop of persimmon cut.
Sat. 7th. Clear and quite cool early in morn, but a beautiful and pleasant day from N. Pa, Willie and I finished digging pinders at 9 and we picked 50 of cotton on upper side of Cherry cut by 11. Pa walked to Clara's in eve. I dug some potatoes and picked some peas in orchard for pigs and cows in eve.
Sun. 8th. Clear and pleasant from N. I rode Salome out on Creek and saw some of our cattle there early in morn. Dixie and Rena drove Hattie to town to preaching in morn. Beau Chambers came at 11 and all of us but Pa walked to Lewis' and had Sunday School in eve.
Mon. 9th. Clear, dry and cool but pleasant. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton all day in Cherry cut and got about 375. Dixie and Rena drove up Maude (Cherry's devon heifer) with a calf (her 1st) in eve.
Tue. 10th. Bright, dry and pleasant. Willie and I put some wire (1 strand) around part of cowpen on outside to prevent young calves from getting out early in morn. I rode Salome to Cohen's and back by Nolan Veal's to see about ginning by 11 3/4. Pa rode Hattie to Alice's early in morn. Willie picked cotton all day in Cherry cut and Pa and I picked there in eve. Mary Fugler and Maggie Comfort came in morn and stayed all night.
Wed. 11th. Bright and dry but pleasant. Pa, Willie and I (began) and picked peas in Gate cut all day and got about 2 1/2 bus of threshed ones. Mary Fugler and Maggie Comfort went home in morn. Mrs Martha Morris here in eve awhile.
Thu. 12th. Bright and cool and dry from NW. Pa picked and threshed out peas all day beyond big road in little patch just opposite here. George Banyun hauled one load and Nolan Veal's big wagon with 4 mules hauled 3 loads of Pa's and Willie's and my cotton to Veals' gin and finished hauling all picked but about 3 bales of mine and about 2 of Pa's and Willie's by dusk.
Fri. 13th. Bright and quite cool and dry from NW. Pa and Willie picked and threshed out about 1 1/2 bus peas in Gate cut all day. I put some cotton seed in back of new cotton house and dug some potatoes and rode Hattie to Veal's gin by 11 3/4 and his wagon brought 1 load of seed late yesterday eve and 2 this morning and finished and hauled our 5 bales to Cohen's in eve and I sold to Cohen at 7 7/8 cts. I rode Hattie to store in eve.
Sat. 14th. Clear and cool and dry from NW. Pa, Willie and I picked and threshed out peas in Gate cut most of morn. Pa went to Clara's in eve and Willie went hunting with Dan and Nat. I picked a few big cowpeas for seed in eve and took pinders off Pa's shed and put in flower pit.
Sun. 15th. Clear, a little frost in morn and a dry cool N wind. Dixie and Rena drove Hattie to Seymour's buggy and Willie rode Salome to chapel to preaching. Willie came home at 3 and Dixie and Rena came after sunset. They dined at Jim Fugler's. Ida, Bob and baby, and Dan and Tigner dined here.
Mon. 16th. Bright, and dry and pleasant from NE. Pa, Willie and I picked peas in Gate cut till 9 1/2 in morn and cotton balance of day in Cherry cut in SW side in new part. I put away some cotton seed in new house at 10 to 12.
Tue. 17th. Bright, but cloudy some and cool and pleasant but very dry. Pa, Willie and I picked peas in Gate cut till 9 1/2 in morn and cotton balance of day on W side of Cherry cut in new part. Julia Fugler and Minnie Comfort came at 3 1/2 in eve and stayed all night.
Wed. 18th. Bright, cloudy some and cool but dry and pleasant. Pa, Willie and I picked peas in Gate cut till 9 3/4 in morn and cotton balance of day. We finished Cherry cut at 3 in eve and picked Cane hollow balance of eve. Julia Fugler and Minnie Comfort went home in eve.
Thu. 19th. Bright and dry and pleasant from NE. Pa, Willie and I picked peas in Gate cut till 9 1/4 and we picked cotton in Cane hollow balance of day. I had a dull headache all day and worse at night and slept but little.
Fri. 20th. Clear and dry and pleasant. Pa and Willie picked peas in Gate cut till 9 1/4 and cotton in Cane hollow balance of day. I lay in bed till 9 in morn with headache (vomited some early in morn) and got up at 9 and dug some potatoes and got some corn. I picked cotton all eve. Cousin Amarintha Huff came late in eve.
Sat. 21st. Clear, cool and dry from NE. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton in Cane hollow till 11 1/4 in morn. Nellie drove Hattie and took Cousin Amarintha to Clara's in morn and Nellie and I drove Hattie to town in eve and returned after sunset.
Sun. 22nd. Clear, cool and dry. All of us home till after dinner and all of us but Pa walked to Clara's in eve. Cousin Amarintha Huff still there.
Mon. 23rd. Clear, cool and dry. Pa, Willie and I began and picked peas in Persimmon cut till 9 1/2 in morn and Willie and I picked cotton balance of day in Cane hollow. Pa picked till dinner and he drove Hattie to buggy in eve by Clara's and carried Cousin A Huff to town to Flynn's. Misses Joella and Jenny Glass dined here.
Tue. 24th. Clear, cool and dry. Pa, Willie and I picked peas in Persimmon cut till 9 1/2 in morn and cotton in Cane hollow balance of day and got about 250 of cotton and 90 of peas.
Wed. 25th. Clear, but a little foggy till 9 and warmer from SW. Willie and I picked peas till 10 1/4 in morn in Persimmon cut and cotton balance of day in Cane hollow. Pa picked there all day. Dixie and Rena drove up Gipsy's heifer with a red bull calf in eve from cow pasture.
Thu. 26th. Bright but cloudy some from SW and rained some from NW. Willie and I picked peas in Persimmon cut till 10 1/2 in morn and cotton balance of day with Pa. We finished Cane hollow in eve and picked about 50 on H ridge late in eve.
Fri. 27th. It rained from NW at 4 1/2 to 6 1/2 in morn and cool and bright all day. Willie and I picked peas in Pine corner most of morn and Pa picked cotton on H ridge most of day. Willie and I picked there all eve.
Sat. 28th. Clear and cool from N and a beautiful and pleasant day.
Pa picked cotton on H ridge most of morn and finished that cut. Willie and I picked peas on Pine corner most of morn. I drove Hattie to buggy to Cohen's in eve and Willie rode Salome to town in eve and John Fosselman paid Willie $14 owing on cattle.
Sun. 29th. Clear and cool and a beautiful and pleasant day. Dan,
Bud and Haines dined here and all of us walked to Lewis' in eve and had Sunday School. Clara and her children came.
Mon. 30th. Clear, cool and dry from NW. I picked peas in Pine corner till 9 3/4 in morn and Pa picked cotton all day in Cherry cut and Willie picked there after 10 in morn. I began and hauled in 1 full cartload of corn from Gate cut by 12 and 3 more in eve (about 20 bbls of corn). Nellie borrowed about 2 gallons of new syrup from Lewis in morn (he is grinding cane).
Tue. 31st. Clear, cool and dry. Willie and I picked peas in Pine corner till 9 3/4 in morn and Willie picked cotton balance of day with Pa. They picked in mine in Cherry cut in morn and in theirs SW of there all eve. I hauled in 1 whole cartload of corn from Gate cut by 11 1/2 and finished that cut and I hauled in 2 loads from Pine corner (with Hattie) in eve.
