OCTOBER 1891
Thu. Oct. 1st. Bright and quite warm and dry and no rain. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton all day in fence row cut in Pa's and Willie's cotton. I gathered 3 s'ks of yellow (late) corn to feed on and brought it home on Hattie at 1 1/2 and Nellie rode Hattie to Clara's in eve.
Fri. 2nd. Bright and warm and dry from E and no rain. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton all morn in SW corner of fence row cut. Pa and Willie finished there and picked some in Pine corner in eve. I lay down all eve with sick headache and suffered all night.
Sat. 3rd. Cloudy and warm and showered from SE from 10 1/2 to 6 in eve and we had 2 good showers at 1 1/2 to 2 and again at 4 1/2 to 5. Pa, Willie, Dixie and I picked cotton till 10 in morn and finished Pine corner and I hauled the cotton and some corn on cart by 11. Mr. A. Newman and Maggie Miller came at 11 3/4. I grabbled some yams in eve (the first) and got some okra and tomatoes from field in eve.
Sun. 4th. Bright and warm most of day and clouded up from NW late in eve and rained some through night and turned cool. Dixie and Willie drove Hattie to our buggy and Maggie and Rena went in Mr. Newman's Jumper to town to Church in morn and Nellie, Pa and Mr. Newman stayed home.
Mon. 5th. Cloudy and quite cool from NE all day. I drove Hattie to Cohen's in morn and Mr. Newman went there too on his Jumper and we got back by 12 and Pa, Willie and I picked cotton in Cherry cut all eve. ---, Maggie and Rena drove Mr. Newman's Jumperto Womack's in eve.
Tue. 6th. Cloudy and cool from NE. Aleck Newell and Allen McCleary came in morn and carried a bale of S-H cotton (mine) and a bale of Fienburn - Pa's and Willie's - to Cohen's. My S-H bale weighed 480 and I got Cohen to ship it. Pa's and Willie's bale weighed 469 and I sold to Cohen at 8 1/8. We got home at 3 1/2 with seed. Mr. Newman went from here to Lewis' late in eve. A deaf and dumb Dawson came late in eve and stayed all night. Pa picked cotton all day in Cherry cut.
Wed. 7th. Bright and quite cool from N. Mr. Newman and Maggie went home in morn and the deaf and dumb Dawson went to Lewis' in eve. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton all day. We finished Cherry cut by 9 3/4 in morn and picked balance of day in Cane hollow in Pa's and Willie's ------------their last bale.
Thu. 8th. Clear and I think cold enough for a slight frost in morn - wind from N all day. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton all day. We finished Cane hollow by dinner and picked on H Ridge all eve.
Fri. 9th. Bright and cold N wind all day. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton all day. We finished H Ridge by 9 3/4 in morn and cut by Front gate by 3 in eve and picked some in Gate cut.
Sat. 10th. Clear and quite cool from N and getting dry again. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton in Gate cut all morn. Willie rode Salome and I rode Hattie to Graves' place and brought Dick cow home by 3 in eve and I picked some Welborn peas for seed late in eve.
Sun. 11th. Clear, cool and dry from N. Dixie and Rena drove Hattie to town to church in morn. Balance of us home all day. Bud here all day. Mr. Sims brought us some papers late in eve.
Mon. 12th. Clear, cool and dry. Pa and Willie and I and Dan and Bud picked peas on halves in "Five Acre" for Mr. Sims most of day. I took Hattie and cart there in morn and in eve and hauled peas.
Tue. 13th. Bright, cool and dry. Pa, Willie and I and Dan and Bud picked peas all day in "Five Acre" for Mr. Sims (in hull) in morn and for ourselves (threshed ones) in eve. Rena picked cotton in Gate cut this morn and yesterday --- rode Hattie to Womack's in eve and ---- carry some sewing.
Wed. 14th. Clear, cool and dry. Pa, Willie and I and Dan and Bud picked peas all day in "Five Acre" for Mr. Sims on halves. Nellie went to Clara's in morn and there all day. Rena picked cotton in Gate cut part of morn.
Thu. 15th. Clear, cool and dry. Pa, Willie and I and Dan and Bud picked peas all day in "Five Acre" cut for Mr. Sims on halves. Dixie and Rena finished picking over cotton in Gate cut in morn.
Fri. 16th. Clear, cool and dry. Pa, Willie and I and Dan and Bud picked peas in "Five Acre" till 12 and quit. Dan and Bud dined here and left at 2 1/2. I winnowed some peas (2 bbls) in eve. Pa and Willie picked a few in eve.
Sat. 17th. Clear, cool and dry. Willie rode Salome fox hunting just before daylight. I drove Hattie to buggy to Cohen's early in morn and got some things and got 2 flowered china vases for Rena. I grabbled some potatoes and hauled in a cart load of corn in eve.
Sun. 18th. Bright and a cold N wind. Nellie and I home all day. Dixie and Rena drove Hattie and Willie rode Salome to Chapel in morn and home by 3 in eve.
Mon. 19th. Clear and cool and dry from N. Pa and Willie and Dixie and Rena and I picked peas till 9 3/4 in Pine corner and we put them away in hull. Pa and Willie picked cotton balance of day. I picked cotton till 12 and Rena and I picked peas by front gate on east side most of eve and ---- them and finished 2 bbls of seed ----. I picked 10 of cotton late in eve. We --- by front gate on west side by 3 1/2 and --- in Gate cut late in eve.
Tue. 20th. Clear and a frost in morn and beautiful dry weather. Pa and Willie and Rena and I picked peas (in hull) in Pine corner till 10 1/2 in morn and Pa, Willie and I picked cotton in Gate cut balance of day and finished that cut by sunset.
Wed. 21st. Clear, cool and dry. Pa, Willie and Rena and I picked peas in Pine corner till 10 1/4 in morn (in hull). Pa, Willie and I picked cotton balance of day. We finished H ridge and most of Cherry cut. Mrs. Chester Henderson and Jimmie here awhile in eve.
Thu. 22nd. Clear, cool and dry from N. Pa and Willie and Rena and I picked peas (in hull) till 10 1/2 in morn on SW side of Persimmon cut above little spring and Pa, Willie and I picked cotton balance of day. We finished Cherry cut and picked most of eve in Fence row cut.
Fri. 23rd. Clear, a little frost in morn and very dry and pretty weather. Pa, Willie and I picked peas (in hulls) in Pine corner till 9 1/2 in morn and cotton in Fence row cut till late in eve and got enough (1305) for my last bale of Fishburn cotton. I borrowed 300 from Pa and Willie to make out bale.
Sat. 24th. Clear, cool and dry. Pa, Willie and I took Hattie and cart to Pine corner early in morn and picked peas till 10 (in hull) and brought home some corn with peas at 10 3/4. Mr. Jim Fugler and Mary here all day. I drove Hattie to buggy to Cohen's at 2 to 5 and Willie rode Salome and Jim Boland rode Joe (first time) to Cohen's too.
Sun. 25th. Clear, cool and dry. None of us went to church. I rode Hattie to Clara's at 8 to 11 1/4 in morn and Nellie rode Salome and Dixie, Willie and Rena walked and all went to Clara's in eve and Pa and I home all eve.
Mon. 26th. Bright and dry and warmer. Pa, Willie, Rena and I picked peas (in hull) in Pine corner till 9 3/4 in morn and cotton on S end of Fence row cut till 12 and Pa and Willie and Rena picked there in eve and finished that cut. I rode Hattie to Cohen's in eve to see about ginning and returned at 1/4 by sun.
Tue. 27th. Clear, cool and dry from N. Allen Cearly came early in morn and carried 1300 of Fishburn cotton to Cohen's (mine) and we got through at 3 3/4 and bale weighed 446 and I sold it to Cohen on account at 7 5/8. I got home at 1 1/2 and worked at cotton house and barn most of eve moving seed and bbls making room in barn for corn and peas. Pa and Willie picked cotton all day in Pine corner in morn and Cane hollow in eve. Rena picked all morn. Mary and Tigner came to Clara's in morn and Mary and Clara here awhile in eve.
Wed. 28th. Clear, cool and very dry. Pa, Willie, Rena and I picked peas (in hull) till 9 1/2 in morn. I hauled in one cart load of corn by 12 with Hattie and 2 in eve from Pine corner (full loads). Pa and Willie picked cotton in Cane hollow all day after 10 in morn.
Thu. 29th. Bright and cool and very dry. Pa, Willie, Rena and I picked peas on S side of Persimmon cut till 9 1/2 in morn (in hull). Pa and Willie picked cotton in Cane hollow balance of day. I hauled in one cart load of corn --- and 3 in eve from bottom, full loads of -----.
Fri. 30th. Bright and dry but warmer and damp SE wind and some clouds. Pa, Willie, Rena and I picked peas (in hull) on SE corner of Persimmon cut till 9 1/2 in morn and I hauled in 1 cart load by 12 and 2 in eve. Pa and Willie picked cotton in Cane hollow and finished there late in eve.
Sat. 31st. Bright and dry and warmer. Pa, Willie and I picked over cut of cotton by front gate on west side by 10 1/2 in morn. Nellie and I drove Hattie to Chester Henderson's in eve and I went on to town. We got home at dark.
