NOVEMBER 1913
Sat. Nov. 1st. Bright and chilly from NE early in morn and warmer after 10 in morn. Willie and Marion and I got part of hogs out of field into calf pasture early in morn (to sell) and Willie got Sandy from field by 11 and drove him to town in eve. Wiley and family went in Surry to his Pa's in morn and Gordon stayed at Wiley's today and dined here. I cut up wood and drew water at 10 to 11 1/2 in morn and gathered some pecans in eve.
Sun. 2nd. Bright and chilly from NE early in morn and pleasant from there after 10 in morn. Willie and Minnie and children walked to SS in eve. Wiley and family returned from his Pa's late in eve.
Mon. 3rd. Bright and dry and pleasant from S. Willie drove out mules to our wagon and Wiley his team to one of Lanehart's wagons and carried 43 hogs to town in 2 trips today and Willie sold them to Mount and they returned at 9 at night. I helped to load up hogs both times and cut up wood and drew good deal of water today. Willie sold the hogs at 6 1/2 cts.
Tue. 4th. Bright and dry and pleasant from E. Willie and Gordon helped Wiley to grind and cook molasses today. I picked some pepper in field and sowed some okra seed in morn and carried some pecans and pepper to Wiley's in eve and got wood and water and helped to milk.
Wed. 5th. Bright but cloudy some all day and dry and pleasant from SE and clear all night. Willie and Gordon helped Wiley to grind and cook his molasses in morn and they cut and stripped our cane in eve and Wiley helped too late in eve. I cut up wood and shucked and shelled some bread corn in morn and drew water through the day ----shing tomorrow.
Thu. 6th. Clear and cool in morn but cloudy and warmer from SE in eve and all night. Willie and Wiley and Gordon stripped and cut our grinding cane all morn and finished it at 12 and Willie and Gordon and I got up Sandy and the mules from field by 12 1/2 and Willie hauled our cane and wood to Wiley's all eve and Wiley and Gordon and Hannah ground our cane all eve. I shelled and winnowed some bread corn most of morn.
Fri. 7th. Warm and cloudy most of day and sprinkled rain a little at 9 in morn. Willie hauled cane and wood to mill all morn and they cooked there as on yesterday eve and Willie hauled last load of our cane just after dinner and ground in eve with the mules. I rode Sandy to Barber's mill and returned at 12 with 6 1/2 p'ks of meal and I cut up wood and drew water in eve.
Sat. 8th. Bright, nearly clear, and a dry and chilly wind from NW all day. Gordon stayed here last night and he and Willie helped Wiley at mill all morn and Gordon and Marion helped till 2 in eve and they finished and Wiley finished cooking late in eve. Willie and Minnie drove Sandy to town in eve and returned at sunset. I cut up good deal of wood and picked up 3/4 of p'k of pecans today.
Sun. 9th. Clear and frost in morn and a chilly and dry wind from NW all day and calm and cold all night. Joe Mathis staid here last night and he and Ernest D dined here. Willie and Minnie and children walked to SS in eve and Bro Hopper preached there and stayed all night here.
Mon. 10th. Clear and calm and a very white frost and killing freeze in morn but pleasant in sun after 10 in morn. Bro Hopper left after 9 1/2 in morn. Willie put dirt on cane rick on patch SE of here at 9 1/2 to 10 1/2 and he and I got up the mules from field by 11 1/4 and we hauled our molasses from Wiley's and hauled in a load of pumpkins from hollow E of here and killed and dressed a shoat in eve.
Tue. 11th. Clear and frost in morn but calm and pleasant in sun after 10 in morn. Willie and 4 women dug potatoes all morn and part of eve and hauled them in 3 loads late in eve. I cut up good deal of wood and drew good deal of water today.
Wed. 12th. Bright, nearly clear, and pleasant from SE and dry. Willie and Marion and I dug yams and Irish potatoes in new ground E of here by 10 1/2 in morn and hauled them by 12 1/4 and last of our potatoes. Willie and Marion went hunting in eve. I got wood and water and fed in eve.
Thu. 13th. Bright and dry and pleasant from SE. Willie drove the mules to wagon to town in morn and returned at 4 1/4 in eve with some peas (20 bus) which he bought and s'k of oats to plant and 2 reels of net wire. I cut up good deal of wood and drew water early in morn and carried a bucket of new molasses to Mrs. Lanehart by 11 1/2 and put an iron in back of our fireplace in eve.
Fri. 14th. Foggy and wet till 9 1/2 in morn and bright and warm and dry balance of day. I removed wire from around old apple pear tree early in morn and Willie plowed under oats there all day with the mules. I got wood and water for Hannah to wash and drew good deal of water and cut up wood till 12. Nellie went in Surry with Wiley to town in morn and returned at 3 1/2 in eve.
Sat. 15th. Foggy and wet till 9 1/2 in morn and bright and warm and dry balance of day. Willie plowed under oats in morn and he and Marion went hunting in eve. I cut up good deal of wood early in morn and gathered some pecans and shelled some dry butter beans in eve and got wood and water and fed and helped to milk.
Sun. 16th. Foggy early in morn and bright and warm and dry most of day. Willie and Minnie and Charles and Carl drove Sandy to Jack D's in morn and returned at dark. Mrs. Chambers and Dixie and JK here most of day. Bernice and Nellie and Carmel at Lanehart's most of day.
Mon. 17th. Foggy and wet till 9 1/2 in morn and bright and warm and dry balance of day. Willie plowed under oats in old orchard today and finished in eve late, all but harrowing. I cut up good deal of wood in morn and picked up some pecans and shelled some butter beans in eve and drew good deal of water and fed and drove up cows from field in eve.
Tue. 18th. Foggy and wet till 9 1/2 in morn and bright and warm and dry balance of day. Willie finished harrowing oats by 10 in morn and relaid floor in new room balance of day. I set out a few button onions in garden and hoed all of winter onions there in morn.
Wed. 19th. Bright and warm and dry. Willie drove mules to our wagon and Wiley drove his team to Lewis' wagon and carried 20 of Wiley's hogs to town in morn and they returned in eve. I helped to load up hogs in morn and cut up good deal of wood and drew good deal of water today.
Thu. 20th. Bright and warm and dry but a damp breeze from S all day and night too. Willie and I put 5 of our meat hogs in pen back of garden early in morn and Willie dug post holes to put a wire fence around oats patch N of here part of day. --------- good deal of wood and drew water ----- for washing today.
Fri. 21st. Warm and cloudy some and a damp wind from S today and at night too. Willie finished digging post holes around oats N of here and set the posts today. I helped him in morn and in eve too and got wood and water for Hannah too.
Sat. 22nd. Bright and warm and dry. I helped Willie to put up net wire around part of oat patch in morn and Willie and Marion drove Sandy to town in eve. I patched a pair of pants in eve (partly) and got wood and water and fed.
Sun. 23rd. Bright but some dark clouds all day and sultry but dry. Wiley and Bernice went to Jack D's in morn and Rena and her other children here most of day and Nora and Carrie too.
Mon. 24th. Bright but some clouds and cool from NE. Willie worked on wire fence around oat patch N of here yesterday and finished all but gate. I helped Willie in morn and shucked corn and got wood and water in eve.
Tue. 25th. Clear, but smoky, and cool in morn but warmer in eve from S of E. Willie and I made and put up a big gate at SW corner of oat patch in morn and Willie hunted his hogs in Elmwood pasture in eve and I shucked corn and got wood and water and fed in eve.
Wed. 26th. Bright and dry and pleasant from SE. Willie hauled wood with the mules all day. Gordon here most of day. I drew water through the day for tomorrow's washing and cut up good deal of wood.
Thu. 27th. Bright and warm but cloudy some all day and a damp breeze from SE. Willie and Wiley and Marion and little Wiley and some of Lewis' boys hunted birds and squirrels today. Wiley and family and Mrs. Mathis and Gordon dined here (Thanksgiving day). I shelled and winnowed some bread corn in morn.
Fri. 28th. Cloudy and a damp SE breeze most of day and thundered in NW most of day and rained in little showers here at 2 1/2 to 4 1/2 in eve and a thunder cloud came up from NW at dark and we had a good hard rain till 9 in night - and needed very much too. Willie rode Sandy to Barber's mill in morn and returned at 12 with the meal. I threshed the jaybird pecan tree in morn and Charles and I gathered one p'k of pecans.
Sat. 29th. Cloudy and rained slowly from S most of morn and some in eve till 3 1/2 and a thunder cloud came up from NW at 3 3/4 and we had a hard rain with some thunder and wind till 4 1/2 and began to rain again at 5 1/4 and lasted till late in night with an E wind. We cut up wood in morn and Willie drove Sandy to town in eve and I got wood and water and fed and got up cows from ----- but didn't milk on account of rain. I slept but little at night for coughing.
Sun. 30th. Bright and pleasant from SW and no rain in sight. Earl dined here. Willie and Minnie and children walked to SS in eve. Nellie and Carl went to Wiley's in eve.
