NOVEMBER 1902

Sat. Nov. 1st. Bright, nearly clear, and cool and dry. Willie and I picked peas all morn in fence row cut on W side of Cherry cut and hauled them with mule and cart at 12. Willie drove Joe to buggy to town in eve and returned at dark. I got wood and water and picked some pepper and some white pole bean seed in garden and Wiley and I gathered about 1 1/2 bu of pears (the last on tree) and I gave him part of them. Nellie went to Wiley's late in eve and staid all night. The cough awoke me at 10 at night and I slept very little all night.

Sun. 2nd. Bright and cool and dry but a breeze from SE and some little clouds and warmer in eve. Willie drove Joe to town to preaching at Methodist church in morn. I gave our chickens some International poultry medicine in dough early in morn for cholera. We have lost nearly 1/2 of them in the last 2 months and I picked some peas on hollow on H ridge for them just after breakfast and grabbled some potatoes on hilltop of Persimmon cut and got a red yam that weighed 9 1/2 lbs. Nellie at Wiley's last night and this morn and she and Wiley and Rena and 2 children came at 2 1/2 in eve. Gordon brought our mail in eve. I arose at 10 at night with cough but drank coffee and slept some after.

Mon. 3rd. Cloudy all day and no sun and a damp breeze from SE and rained some in slow showers through the night. Willie and Henry and I took wagon to Luckett field early in morn with Ella and Jack and gathered about 10 bbls corn on hilltop and last in that field and we came on to SW corner and gathered there and in 3rd Cane hollow balance of day and we hauled in 2 loads in morn and 1 in eve (about 60 bbls). I picked a sack of peas for chickens in 2nd Cane hollow late in eve. I slept very little with cough and wheezing at night.

Tue. 4th. Dark cloudy and no sun and rained slowly all day without ceasing from SE and quit at dark and bright all night. We didn't work on account of rain. I strung some pepper early in morn which I picked on last Sat eve and I lay on floor and rested some at 9 1/4 to 11. Willie milked and fed in rain late in eve. I slept but little at night with cough and wheezing.

Wed. 5th. Bright and pleasant from NW and sun shined most of day. Henry didn't work today - he got some money from Willie early in morn with a pretence of going to a show in town but the show came on yesterday morn and left this morn without showing. Willie went hunting early in morn and cut some wood toward Luckett field and he hauled 3 wagon loads with Ella and Jack in eve. I drove Joe to town in morn and carried the large red potatoe which weighed 9 3/4 lbs. to Metzger and I saw Dr. Magruder about my cough and got a box of capsules at Adams' drug store for it. I returned _____ in eve and cut up wood and drew water and fed. I slept very little all night.

Thu. 6th. Bright and pleasant from _____. I arose sick in morn from the capsule _____ night vomiting some but got better after eating a little breakfast. Willie and Henry and I cut and ricked some sugar cane from W side of orchard near bean arbor in morn and Willie and Henry pulled some ______ Cane hollow at 10 1/2 to 1 1/2 and again ______ hauled about 25 bbls in one load _______. I lay on floor and rested some at 10 3/4 ______ up some wood by 12 1/4 and grabbled some potatoes on hilltop of Persimmon cut and picked a sack of peas for chickens and picked up ___ peck of pecans in eve.

Fri. 7th. Bright and pleasant ____ NW. Willie and Henry and I pulled and hauled ___ big load of corn from SW corner in morn and we hauled in a big load in _____ old Cane hollow and H ridge. I ________ coffee at 11 last night to relieve coughing.

Sat. 8th. Bright and pleasant from NW. Willie and Henry and I hauled in 3/4 of a wagon load of corn from old Cane hollow and a full load from Cherry cut and Pine corner by 12 1/2 (in morn) and finished last of our corn. We made about 300 bbls of our native corn and 30 bbls of boat corn in all. Willie helped Wiley to haul in some cotton and peas in eve and Willie hauled in 175 of cotton which Aunt Susan and Rose picked in Luckett field today. I picked some red pepper and some white bean seed in garden in eve and I picked a sack of peas for chickens in old Cane hollow too.

Sun. 9th. Bright and dry and pleasant. Wiley rode to his Pa's in morn and returned late in eve. Nellie and I walked to Wiley's at 9 in morn and Rena and her 2 children came back with us and Buddy and Gordon here most of day too and Lewis here most of morn. I arose at 10 at night with cough and choking but relieved it with coffee till 3 and got up then.

Mon. 10th. Foggy and wet till 10 in morn and bright and pleasant balance of day but some clouds. Willie and Henry and I took wagon to Wiley's early in morn with Ella and Jack and helped Wiley to pull and haul in last of his corn in 2 parts of loads and we finished at 11 1/2. Wiley hauled in all together about 80 bbls of light corn. Willie rode Joe to Ogden's at 12 to 1 and got 1/2 bu of meal and some plow rope. Willie and Henry and I picked cotton most of eve in locust ground at back of field and I hauled it with Joe and cart late in eve (at sunset). I arose at 11 at night with cough and very severe choking and didn't get relieved till 12 3/4 but lay down till 2 3/4 and got up.

Tue. 11th. Bright and pleasant from SW. Willie and Henry and I began early in morn and dug potatoes on hilltop of Persimmon cut till 11 1/4. Henry plowed them up with Ella mule and Willie and I picked them up. Willie and Henry hauled in all dug with Ella in eve and Nellie and I drove Joe to buggy to town in eve and I carried some potatoes to Dr. Magruder and he examined me and said I have C________ head and throat and gave me 2 prescriptions ____ drug store and I got 3 bottles of mi_____ atomizer there on credit which cost $__________. We got home at deep dusk. I arose at ____ night and slept very little all night and suffered with ___ing and difficult breathing.

Wed. 12th. Bright but cloudy ____ day and a damp breeze from S. Willie and Henry and I dug potatoes on hilltop of Persimmon cut all ____ yesterday and hauled in 4 cart loads with Ella ____. I took the medicine today which I got ___ and slept very little at night with coughing ___. I picked some peas in Cherry cut for hogs in eve. Willie and Henry were _____ potatoes.

Thu. 13th. Cloudy and a damp _____ most of morn and bright and warm _____. Willie and Henry and I dug potatoes all ____ of Persimmon cut and finished digging _____ hauled in all in 4 cart loads _______ with mule in eve. We hauled in ____ bus. in all and about 1/2 of them ____ balance Queens and red yams and ____eating ones and quite large. A ___ by the name of Jones dined ____ ordered a little bill of things _____. I slept very little at night with _____.

Fri. 14th. Bright ____ S. Willie and Henry and I picked co_____ in locust ground at back of field and hauled it with Joe and cart late in eve. ______ had a bad headache in eve and only picked part of eve. I fed and milked and got wood ____. Nellie was sick and lay in bed in eve. ______ and Cousin Mary here late in eve and brought us a bucket of new syrup. Lewis finished grinding his cane on yesterday. I arose at 10 1/2 at night and lay on floor balance of night.

Sat. 15th. Foggy and wet till 10 in morn and bright and warm from S balance of day. Willie, Henry and I picked cotton in locust ground in back of field in morn. Nellie and Minnie washed on machine in morn. Willie rode Joe squirrel hunting in eve. I picked some pepper in garden (about 1/2 bu) and some dry butter beans in orchard in eve. Nellie went to Wiley's late in eve and staid all night. I slept very little with cough and choking at night.

Sun. 16th. Foggy and wet till 10 in morn and cloudy all ____ rain at 2 in eve and bright balance of day. I walked to Wiley's early in morn and he went to his Pa's and Nellie and Rena and her 2 children _____ Dixie's at 9 1/2 in morn and returned _____. ___breathing was easier today and ___ arose at 10 3/4 at night and made and drank some coffee and slept again at 12 1/4 to 4 1/4 and up again with cough.

Mon. 17th. It rained good deal last night slowly and very muddy and misted rain till 10 in morn and cool from W of N all day - dark cloudy all eve and bright after night. Willie and Wiley and Henry worked most of day on wire fence at back of our field putting it up again so that we can put our horses and cattle in field. I rode Joe to Sims' early in morn and I picked some cotton in locust ground at back of our field in morn and some in eve and Ray and Rose and Aunt Susan and Net picked there all eve and finished locust ground and picked some ___ there and I hauled cotton at sunset with ___ and cart. I lay in bed till 10 at night and could not sleep with cough and wheezing and made and drank some coffee at 10 1/2 and slept some at 11 1/2 to 3 1/2 and got up then.

Tue. 18th. Bright ___ NW and sun shined most _____. Wiley and Willie and Henry worked on ____ fence SE of here all day and ____ helped them and dined here and they ____ late in eve. I washed out ____ molasses barrels and cut up some locust ____ down the last Arbor Vitae tree ____ and picked up some pecans in morn. ____ nearly all of green butter beans _____ about 5 pecks and sent part of them ___ eve and I took up good deal ______ cow pen late in eve and put some _____ cattle and some of Fosselmann's in cow ____ field. I arose at 11 1/2 at night but ____ at 1 to 4 1/2.

Wed. 19th. Bright and quite cool early in morn but sun shined all day and pleasant after 9 in morn and calm. Willie got up Ella and Jack from field early in morn and hauled pine wood from near Luckett field to Lewis' late in eve. We killed our sow pig early in morn and Wiley and I cleaned it and I cut it up and salted it down. Wiley and Henry and Jack cut cane most of day. They stripped it standing and they cut all of cow pen corner and some in NE part of orchard. Wiley and I cut and ricked about 1000 stalks for seed in NE part of orchard at 2 to 3 1/2 in eve. Nellie and Carmell at Wiley's all day and Minnie there too all eve. I got up our cows from field at dusk and Willie milked them at dark. I arose at 10 1/2 with cough but lay in bed and slept at 12 1/2 to 4 1/2.

Thu. 20th. Cloudy some all day but bright and calm and warm after 10 in morn and dark cloudy late in eve and at night and looked like rain. Wiley and Henry and Jack finished cutting and stripping our cane by 10 in morn and they finished Wiley's at 2 in eve. Willie hauled cane from old cow pen corner with Ella and Jack most of day to Lewis' and he got up Dan from field at 1 in eve and I took Joe and Dan to Lewis' at 2 and Wiley and Henry and Jack ground cane till after dark. I helped Willie to load up wagon most of day and washed out molasses barrels (3 of them) and cut up wood and drew good deal of water. I arose at 9 at night with cough but made and drank some coffee and slept again at 11 to 4.

Fri. 21st. Dark cloudy all day and no sun and warm and air damp and thundered far off in SW and NW all day and dropped rain a little late in eve and bright at night. Wiley and Henry and Jack at Lewis' mill grinding our cane all day with Joe and Dan and Lewis cooked our molasses all day and quit just after dark. Willie hauled cane most of day from here to mill with Ella and Jack and finished all late in eve and brought home our 2 1/2 bbls full of molasses. Willie hauled 7 loads on yesterday and 7 today. I helped to load up cane and packed and cut up wood and fixed up wire gap toward cow pen where Willie hauled out cane today. I arose at 12 with cough and wheezing but slept again at 2 to 4 3/4.

Sat. 22nd. Warm and cloudy all day from SW but sun shined some and rained a little slow shower at dusk and quit after dark. Willie hauled in some cotton fron new ground at back of our field (which Ray and folks picked on yesterday) early in morn and he and I hauled all of Wiley's cane in 4 wagon loads to mill at 9 in morn to 3 in eve and hauled bbl of water from Wiley's to mill. Wiley and Henry and Jack ground our cane all day with Joe and Dan and finished it at 4 in eve and Willie and Henry brought the last of our syrup home by dusk. We made 152 1/2 gals in all.

Sun. 23rd. Bright and warm all day and calm but some clouds. I shaved early in morn for first time in a long time. Willie rode Joe by Clara's and on back by Luckett field in morn by 12 1/4. Wiley and Rena and Bernice and baby here most of day. Clara and Effie here most of eve. Wiley and I got up Dan and Goulden and Ella and Jack from field late in eve. I arose at 9 3/4 at night and drank coffee and slept again at 12 to 3.

Mon. 24th. Cloudy and warm and a damp wind from S all day and we had a little shower at 3 1/2 in eve and a hard rain at 9 at night with some wind and another heavy rain at 12 from W with wind. Willie and I hauled a big wagon load of pine wood from Wiley's field early in morn and we hauled a load of split pine wood and a load of oak limbs here from near locust field by 11 3/4 in morn with Ella and Jack. Wiley and Henry and Jack ground Wiley's cane at Lewis' most of day and finished and got Wiley's molasses home at 4 in eve (in rain). Wiley made 45 gals in all and Henry brought wagon home at 4 1/4. Willie drove Joe to town in eve and returned at dusk. I picked about 1 bu of pepper in garden and cut up wood and milked cows (4) in eve.

Tue. 25th. Very muddy and rained some in little sprinkles from NW till 10 in morn and bright and cool from there in eve. I walked to Wiley's in morn and picked up some pecans and cut up wood and drew water and milked in eve. Willie and Henry carried 5 bbls of yams to town in eve with Ella and Jack to wagon but only sold 1 bu and returned after sunset. I arose at 10 at night but slept again well at 12 to 5 1/4.

Wed. 26th. Bright but some dark clouds and a very cool wind from W of N all day and clear and chilly at night. Willie and I helped Wiley to load our wagon and Steve Luckett's with Wiley's cotton early in morn and Henry drove our wagon and Steve his and Wiley rode Goulden to town and they got cotton ginned on Schaeffer's gin and Wiley and Henry returned just before sunset. Willie and I hauled 2 cart loads of cotton from where Cap's house stood (with Joe) at 9 to 11 1/4 and I carried baskets back to Ray and folks and brought home a load of pine wood by 12 1/2. Rena and baby here all day and Bernice and Viola went to school. Willie covered most of our seed cane with dirt late in eve. I helped Nellie to put away box flowers and set out some cannas and cut up wood and drew water in eve.

Thu. 27th. Clear and a white frost and a slight freeze in morn but didn't kill vegetation much and a cold N wind till late in eve. Willie and I helped Wiley to load up our wagon and Steve Luckett's early in morn and put all of Wiley's cotton picked on them and didn't quite fill both and they carried to Schaeffer's gin and returned with seed late in eve. Willie and I worked at hay house some in morn and some in eve wiring in corner there for a cow pen and we weighed and hauled in 2 cart loads of cotton which Ray and women picked in Luckett field late in eve with Joe. B C came late in eve for Nellie and she was there all night.

Fri. 28th. Cloudy with a chilly wind from SE and dropped rain some in eve. Willie and Henry and I loaded up wagon with our cotton early in morn and Henry drove Ella and Jack and carried load to town (Willie rode Joe) and ginned on Schaeffer's gin and bale weighed 478 and Willie sold to Metzger and Cohen at 7 1/4 cts. and they returned late in eve with seed. Nellie came home from Dixie's early in morn. Dixie gave birth to a daughter last night (her 3rd child). I carried 2 big baskets to Luckett field in morn to Ray and women - they are picking cotton there today and I put all of our plows (4) and our harrow under house and fixed a big box under cart shed and 1 under wagon shed to put cotton seed in and got wood and water and milked late in eve.

Sat. 29th. Dark cloudy and no sun and rained most of morn in slow sprinkles and began at dark and rained all night in hard showers from NE and chilly wind with it. Willie walked to Wiley's and back in morn and he and Gordon walked in field in eve and saw all of our hogs. I strung some pepper and cut up some wood in morn and I made a wire gate to cow lot at hay shed in eve and we milked our cows (4) there late in eve and left them in lot. I arose at 12 1/2 but slept again till 5 in morn.

Sun. 30th. Dark cloudy and no sun and sprinkled rain through the day and chilly some from NE. Nellie at Wiley's most of day. I walked there early in morn and Bernice came back with me at 10 and I carried her back late in eve. West and Chunk and Gordon here awhile in eve. I arose at 12 1/2 with cough and made and drank some coffee and slept well again at 2 to 5 1/4.
