NOVEMBER 1901
Fri. Nov. 1st. Bright and warm and dry and some dark clouds most of day. Willie and Jim picked cotton in Luckett field and left it there on ground. I picked cotton all morn in hollow on H ridge and got 67 and I picked some peas for hogs and horses in fence row cut and got some nubbins there too in eve.
Sat. 2nd. Bright and warm from SE but some clouds. Willie and Jim picked cotton in Luckett field all morn and finished there and hauled all picked there on wagon at 12 1/4. I picked cotton all morn on SE part of H ridge and got 75 and I picked peas for hogs and horses in Pine corner and got wood in eve. Willie picked a sack of peas in eve for tomorrow and he and Tigner went hunting.
Sun. 3rd. Cloudy and damp from S till 9 1/2 in morn and a cloud came up then from NW and we had a good rain with some little wind and thunder and it rained on slowly till 12 1/2 and quit and bright but cloudy till dark and a cloud came up then from N and rained a little and wind blew cold from N all night. I walked to Wiley's early in morn and Bernice came back with me and I grabbled some potatoes and got some wood just before rain and I went back to Wiley's at 2 to 3 3/4 and got some wood and water for them. Wiley is not well.
Mon. 4th. Bright and sun shined all day but a cold wind from N all day till late in eve. Willie and Jim and I cut and ricked cane most of morn in old cow pen corner - one rick for seed and two to grind. Nellie and Rena and Bernice drove old Bonnie to town in morn and returned in eve. Aunt Margaret washed in morn. Willie and Jim hauled 2 wagon loads of wood in eve. I picked some peas in Pine corner for horses and hogs.
Tue. 5th. Bright and a very little frost in morn and a cold wind from N most of day but pleasant in sunshine in eve. Willie, Jim and I cut and ricked cane most of morn in old cow pen corner and in NE corner of orchard and we finished all but a little stubble cane on hilltop by wire fence and Willie and Jim picked cotton where Cap's house stood all eve and I got wood and picked peas and got some nubbins in fence row cut in eve and some potatoe vines for cows in Gate cut. Clara and Effie here in eve and Tigner with Pa at night.
Wed. 6th. Bright and some frost in morn and scorched vegetation some but wind from S and pleasant in sunshine after 10 in morn. Jim picked cotton where Cap's house stood all day and Willie too in eve. Willie and Wiley took mules and wagon to Seymour's early in morn and helped Lewis to haul molasses mill to his house by 10 1/2 and Willie hauled a load of wood from near Wiley's by 12. I picked cotton in stubble cane in orchard near wire gap most of morn and I picked peas in fence row cut for hogs and horses and got potatoe vines for cows and calves and got wood in eve.
Thu. 7th. Bright and quite cool early in morn but calm and pleasant after 10 in morn. Willie and Jim picked cotton in morn where Cap's house stood and Jim picked there in eve and Willie rode Joe to hunt hands to pick cotton or peas but didn't find any. I cut and ricked the patch of stubble cane by wire gap in orchard by 10 1/2 in morn and grabbled some yams in Gate cut by 11 1/4 and picked a sack of cotton in orchard by 12 1/4 and I picked peas for hogs and horses in fence row cut and cut some wood in eve. Willie staid in Pa's room with him at night.
Fri. 8th. Bright and cool early in morn and pleasant after 10 in morn and calm. Willie and Jim picked cotton all day in new ground at back of our field and left it there on ground. I picked cotton all morn on far circle of H ridge and got 70 and I got wood and picked peas on W side of Cherry cut for hogs and horses in eve. Tigner staid with Pa at night.
Sat. 9th. Bright and pleasant from W. Willie and Jim picked cotton in new ground at back of our field in morn and hauled all of cotton out there and a few peas that Wash White picked on wagon with Goulden and Jack in eve by dusk. I found our big bob tail white sow with 10 live and 2 dead pigs early in morn and I grabbled a few yams in Gate cut and picked 51 of cotton on far circle of H ridge by 12. I picked peas in Cherry cut for hogs and horses and got wood in eve. Gordon staid with Pa at night.
Sun. 10th. Clear and cool and calm and dry - a beautiful and pleasant day. Rena had a birthday dinner for Bernice today and Jack D and wife and Viola came there on yesterday and there today. B C and Dixie and their 2 little children and John Deloach and Nellie and Willie and Minnie and Carmell and Gordon there today. I walked to Wiley's at 8 to 10 in morn and Rena sent dinner to me and Pa. I got wood and picked sack of peas and got potatoe vines for sows in eve.
Mon. 11th. Bright and pleasant from S. Willie and Jim and I began to gather and haul in our corn from Luckett field in morn (late) and we hauled in 2 wagon loads by 1 and Willie and Jim hauled 1 load in eve (about 60 bbls in all) and I cut up wood and picked peas in fence row cut for hogs and horses in eve. Lewis began to grind and cook molasses in morn.
Tue. 12th. Cloudy and began to rain slowly at 8 in morn and in hard showers at 9 1/2 to 11 (from W) and quit at 11 and cool and some clouds from N, _____ all eve, and clear at night. Willie and Jim and I went on wagon to Luckett field (after getting up the 2 mules from field - they got out last night) and we pulled and hauled in a wagon load of corn from branch bottom by 11 and got nearly wet and Willie and Jim hauled another load in eve - about 40 bbls today - and I picked peas in fence row cut for hogs and horses and got potatoe vines in eve.
Wed. 13th. Bright and a little frost in morn and wind cold from N most of day but pleasant in sunshine. Willie, Jim and I worked a road just other side of Estina branch early in morn and we pulled corn over there till 12 and Willie and Jim in eve and finished all beyond branch. Wiley hauled in his corn all day with mules and wagon. I picked peas in fence row cut for hogs and horses and got potatoe vines and cut up good deal of wood in eve. Dr. Hunnicutt came to see Pa late in eve and left before sunset.
Thu. 14th. Dark cloudy and chilly and dropped rain a little most of morn and began to rain slowly at 12 1/2 and lasted till late in eve and quit and cleared off in night. Willie, Jim and I pulled corn on upper side of Luckett field most of morn and Willie came home and got wagon and mules at 10 (Wiley finished hauling in his corn then) and Willie and Jim hauled a load of corn by 12 and went back at 1 1/2 and mules (or Jack) balked and they got wet and left wagon and corn in field and got home at 4. I weighed up George Banion's peas at 10 1/4 to 12 1/4 in Luckett field and we took 1/3 and he hauled his part home. I cut up wood and milked in rain and got nearly wet in eve.
Fri. 15th. Bright and sun shined most of day but a cold breeze from W of N. Willie took Joe and Dan to Lewis' early in morn and Buddy and boys ground their cane most of day and till in night and finished it with them. Willie hauled 2 loads of corn from Luckett field in morn with Ella and Frances and went back and broke wagon pin in eve and didn't get the load home and Willie drove his mule to Cohen's late in eve and got a pin and some other things. Jim and I pulled corn in Luckett field most of morn and Jim in eve and I cut up wood and picked some peas in fence row cut for hogs and horses in eve.
Sat. 16th. Bright, nearly clear, and a white frost and killing freeze in morn. Jim pulled corn part of morn in Luckett field and I grabbled some potatoes in Gate cut early in morn in frozen dirt and Willie and I hauled a load of corn from Luckett field by 11 and Willie and Jim hauled another by 12 1/4 and Willie hauled 2 wagon loads of beech wood from near Wiley's in eve and I got wood and picked peas in fence row cut for hogs and horses in eve. I had a dull headache all day and night too.
Sun. 17th. Bright, and a freeze and white frost in morn, but wind from SE and pleasant in sunshine after 10 in morn. I walked to Wiley's and he went to his Pa's and Rena and Bernice came back with me at 10 and I grabbled some potatoes by 11. Clara and her 3 children here most of day and Dan and Buddy too in eve. Pa seems to be worse today. My headache left me in morn. Seymour and Dickie Chambers here late in eve and left at dusk. Tigner and Willie staid with Pa at night.
Mon. 18th. Cloudy some all day but bright - it sprinkled rain at daybreak and a breeze from SW all day - and a thunder cloud came up from NW at 7 1/2 to 8 at night and we had a hard shower then. Willie and Jim and I pulled and hauled in 3 wagon loads of corn from Luckett field today - about 60 bbls. I cut up wood and picked peas for horses and hogs in fence row cut in eve. Wiley dug some of his potatoes today and hauled them with Joe and cart in eve.
Tue. 19th. Cloudy and a cold N wind till 10 in morn and clear balance of day from N. Willie and Jim and I pulled and hauled in 2 loads of corn from Luckett field - about 40 bbls - by 1 3/4 o'clock and Jim covered some seed cane with dirt and Willie hauled a load of beech wood from near Wiley's and I picked some peas in fence row cut for horses and hogs in eve.
Wed. 20th. Bright, nearly clear, and a freeze and white frost in morn but calm and pleasant in sunshine after 10 in morn. Willie and Jim and I started to Luckett field early in morn but bolster pin broke in wagon and Willie sent Jim to Cohen's on old Frances and got one and Willie and I pulled corn in Luckett field most of morn on this side of branch in bottom and we hauled a load home by 2. Dr. Hunnicutt came out to Lewis' and B C's in morn and dined here at 2 1/2 and I went to Wiley's with him in eve.
Thu. 21st. Bright, nearly clear, and a white frost and freeze in morn but calm and pleasant in eve. Willie and Jim and I pulled and hauled in one load, and last of our corn, from Luckett field by 11 1/4 in morn. We hauled in about 330 bbls in all and nearly filled barn. Bank Fugler and Miss Mittie F and Miss Maggie C dined here today. I picked some peas for horses and hogs in fence row cut in eve and Willie and Jim covered some seed cane. Willie and I both had fever with cold at night and all eve too.
Fri. 22nd. Cloudy and chilly some, and a thunder cloud came up from NW at 11 1/4 in morn, and rained hard at 11 1/2 to 12 1/2 and quit at 2. Willie and Jim and I picked cotton in new ground at back of our field till 11 in morn and left it there in a basket. I walked to Wiley's at 3 to 4 in eve and Wiley finished digging and hauling in his potatoes in morn and brought some box flowers here on cart (with Joe) in eve and put in flower pit. I had a little fever and aching and chilliness all day and night too and sore throat.
Sat. 23rd. Bright, nearly clear, and quite cool from N but pleasant in sunshine after 10 in morn. Willie and Jim hauled beech wood from beyond Wiley's with Willie's mule and old Frances most of morn and Willie carried Frances to Clara's in eve. I picked peas to feed on most of morn in Pine corner. Wiley and Rena drove Joe to town at 11 in morn to 3 in eve and Bernice here all day. My cold and fever good deal better today.
Sun. 24th. Bright and frost in morn but wind from S and sun shined all day and a beautiful and pleasant day. Gordon staid with Pa last night and he and I drove a red cow and a brown calf which have been in our field several days, and belong in Woodville, to Sims' early in morn and tied the cows in Sims' cow pen. Wiley and Rena and Bernice here most of day and old man Tom Floyd too and Lewis and family and Seymour here in eve. Pa is getting poorer and weaker every day. My cold better today.
Mon. 25th. Bright and pleasant from W of N. Willie and Jim and I began early in morn to dig our potatoes. Jim plowed them up with Ella (mule) and Willie and I picked them up. We dug till 12 and hauled all in 2 cartloads with mule in eve and put in potatoe house - most of them were seed ones.
Tue. 26th. Bright, and a chilly breeze from NE most of morn, but pleasant in sunshine after 10 in morn and dry. Willie and Jim and I dug potatoes all morn in Gate cut, as on yesterday, and hauled all in eve in 2 heavy cartloads, in sacks, and put in potatoe house. They were mostly seed ones for there are more little ones than I ever saw before. Tigner and West staid with Pa at night.
Wed. 27th. Bright and cool and dry - wind from E - but calm and pleasant after 10 in morn. Willie and Jim and I dug potatoes in Gate cut all morn, as on yesterday, and hauled all in 2 very heavy cartloads with mule in eve and Willie and Jim took mule and cart to Luckett field late in eve and got some peas that Jack picked there and I cut up wood and milked and fed late in eve. Wiley and Gordon staid with Pa at night.
Thu. 28th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool and dry and calm. Willie and Jim and I dug potatoes in Gate cut most of morn - as on yesterday - and we hauled in one cart load at 12 and another just after dinner and Willie got up Joe just after dinner and he and Jim drove Joe and mule to wagon to Luckett field late in eve and got some peas which hands picked there today and on yesterday. Hiram Smith Sr. came by potatoe patch in morn and Willie subscribed for a book on the Negro. Seymour got a bottle of Reed's chill cure for Willie in town in eve. Tigner and B C staid with Pa at night.
Fri. 29th. Bright, nearly clear, and a frost in morn but calm and pleasant and dry after 10 in morn. Willie and Jim and I dug potatoes in Gate cut and 6 short rows of Spanishes on SE part of H ridge in morn and finished all by 12 and we hauled them in 2 big cart loads in eve and we dug and hauled in (altogether) about 130 bus - about 50 bus of eating ones and 80 of seed and hog ones. Gordon staid with Pa at night.
Sat. 30th. Clear, and frost in morn, but a breeze from S and pleasant after 10 in morn. Willie and Jim covered some seed cane in orchard and hauled some pine straw from toward Luckett field in wagon to put on our potatoes and hauled some cotton from new ground at back of our field, which Jack and some children picked, by 12 1/4 and Willie and Minnie and Carmell drove Joe to Mrs. James' in eve. I rode Joe to Cohen's in morn and borrowed $15 to hire cotton pickers and returned at 11 1/4 and I covered potatoes in house with pine straw and cut up some wood in eve. Rena and Bernice staid here at night and Clara and Tigner staid with Pa at night.
