NOVEMBER 1895
Fri. Nov. 1st. Bright, nearly clear, and very cool from N. Willie and I picked peas in new SW corner all day and hauled all home late in eve with Hattie and cart and we hauled same way on yesterday. Pa picked cotton in orchard most of day and packed some wood.
Sat. 2nd. Clear and a little frost in morn but a calm and beautiful and pleasant day. Willie and I picked peas in new SW corner all morn and Pa picked cotton in orchard. Bud and Gussie dined here. Pa and I drove Hattie to new buggy to Cohen's in eve and returned before sunset. Willie rode Joe fox hunting at night.
Sun. 3rd. Clear, a little frost in morn but a calm and pleasant day. I grabbled some potatoes early in morn in Persimmon cut and packed and cut up some wood. Pa walked to Alice's in morn and rode Hattie to Clara's in eve. Misses Cook and Grace and Mattie McNamar here all day and W.D. and B.C. here late in eve and at night till 8. I walked to Sims' in eve.
Mon. 4th. Bright, some little clouds and warmer. Pa picked cotton all morn on H ridge and in orchard in eve. Willie and I picked peas all morn in new SW corner and we hauled in 5 full cartloads of corn from there in eve from hollow and hillside right in SW corner and on hilltop toward gully.
Tue. 5th. Bright and pleasant - some little clouds and wind from the E. Pa picked cotton in orchard in morn and finished there and he picked on H ridge in eve. Willie and I picked peas in new SW corner all morn in log ground part and we hauled in 4 full cartloads of corn from there in eve with Hattie. Nellie and Rena walked to Clara's in eve (Ma is sick).
Wed. 6th. Bright and warm and cloudy some in eve. Pa picked cotton on H ridge in morn and on W side of Cherry cut in eve. Willie and I picked peas in morn in new SW corner (in log ground part) and we hauled in 3 full cartloads of corn in eve. We got 1 3/4 loads from 2nd Cane hollow and 1 1/4 from log ground part of SW corner.
Thu. 7th. Cloudy and warm and calm from E. Pa picked cotton all day in Cherry cut on W side (in theirs). Willie and I picked peas all morn in new SW corner in hollow where lightning struck gum tree and we hauled 4 full cartloads of corn from there in eve.
Fri. 8th. Cloudy and warm and damp from S in morn and bright and warm in eve. Pa picked cotton in Cherry cut in morn and in Cane hollow in eve. Willie and I picked peas in new SW corner between drain and wire fence in morn and we hauled in 2 3/4 cartloads of corn (our last) in eve - making 27 3/4 loads in all.
Sat. 9th. It began to rain in slow showers at sunrise from W and changed to NW at 8 and from N at 10 and cool N wind and rained slowly most of day and most of night. Bud here at 7 1/2 to 9 and he went to town and saw Dr. Magruder about Ma and got some medicine from Lewis' for her and got home at 1 1/4. Pa and I walked there at 11 1/2 and Nellie rode there (Hattie) at 12 1/2. Nellie stayed there all night. Pa and I came home in eve. W.D. came late in eve and stayed all night.
Sun. 10th. Cloudy and chilly from N till 3 1/2 in eve and cleared off then. Pa at Clara's all day. I rode Hattie there and back in morn and Bud went to town and saw Dr. Magruder again and got some more medicine from Lewis'. Ma seemed to be better in eve. Tigner and Mary came there today. I rode Hattie back to Clara's in eve and Nellie rode her home. W.D. here all day and B.C. here too in eve and at night till bedtime.
Mon. 11th. Bright, a good deal of frost in morn but didn't kill vegetation and wind cold from N all day. Willie and I cut and ricked all of patch of cane on NW side of orchard in morn by 11 1/2 (and Pa helped us some) and we cut and ricked about 1/2 of cowpen corner in eve by 4 and Willie went hunting and killed 7 squirrels late in eve. Nellie rode Hattie to Clara's in eve and Ma seemed better today. I found a brown hen sitting on 14 eggs NE of cowpen late in eve and set them under a hen on E side of hen house.
Tue. 12th. Bright, nearly clear, and a freeze and frost in morn but seemed to be warmer in eve. Pa picked cotton most of day in Cane hollow, Willie and I dug potatoes on NE corner of Persimmon cut after frost and ice melted off (at 8 1/4 in morn). Gordon and Tigner came early in morn and helped us to pick up potatoes all day. We hauled in 4 cartloads after 1 3/4 in eve till sunset. (Hattie all day). We put the potatoes all in flower pit.
Wed. 13th. Cloudy some all day from S and dropped rain several times in eve but bright most of day and we had a hard rain at 2 to 3 in night. Pa picked cotton most of day in Cane hollow. I plowed up potatoes all morn till 11 3/4 on NE corner of Persimmon cut and finished all but 8 short rows on upper side of patch and Gordon and Tigner picked up potatoes and we hauled in 5 cartloads (4 of eating ones) in eve and put most of them in flower pit. I put some in barrels. Nellie and Helen drove Gussie's mare to our buggy to Hill place to see Mrs. Morris in morn and returned at sunset.
Thu. 14th. It rained hard at 2 to 3 in morn and began at daylight again and rained slowly and dripped all morn and most of eve from SE and warmer today and very wet. Willie and I began to fix orchard fence (hog-proof) on NW side early in morn but rain stopped us at 8 1/2. Willie walked hunting in eve and Pa rode Hattie to Clara's and I picked up a sack of potatoes where we dug on yesterday and packed and cut up some wood in eve.
Fri. 15th. Cloudy and quite cool from N all morn and bright and sun shined most of eve. Pa, Willie and I worked on orchard fence putting down stabs and poles at bottom (on NW side) all morn and we cut and ricked cane most of eve in old cowpen corner and finished last of our cane. Nellie rode Hattie to Clara's in morn and there all day and night. Bud brought Hattie back late in eve. Ma is still quite sick.
Sat. 16th. Bright and quite cool from NW. Pa led Hattie to Clara's in morn and Nellie rode her home. Ma seems better today. Pa walked back home at 10 1/2. Willie and I cut and split a small bay W of cowpen and made 30 rails and packed them up to pen and I fixed fence hog-proof on W and N sides of cowpen by 11 1/2, Pa helped me some. Willie rode Joe hunting in eve and Nellie and I drove Hattie to Cohen's and returned at dusk. W.D. here late in eve and till bedtime.
Sun. 17th. Clear, a little frost in morn but a calm and pleasant day. Bud walked here at 8 1/2 in morn and Pa and I walked back with him and Nellie rode Hattie. Ma was very low all day. I rode Hattie home at 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 and Dixie rode her and I walked back to Clara's. Dixie and Rena and I walked home late in eve and Pa rode Hattie home and I rode her back to Clara's at 6 3/4 to 9 at night. Nellie and Willie stayed there all night.
Mon. 18th. Clear a very slight frost in morn but wind from S and warmer in eve and a beautiful and pleasant day. W.D. stayed here last night. Pa walked to Clara's early in morn and there all day and night. I rode Hattie there in morn and came home at 1 1/4 and went back at 2 1/2 and came home at sunset and went back and returned at 6 1/2 to 10. Willie and Dixie and Rena home all day and at night. (Ma was very low.)
Tue. 19th. Foggy some early in morn and cloudy some all day and wind from NW and cold N wind and clear at night and dry. I rode Hattie to Clara's and Willie rode Joe early in morn. Dr. Magruder came out to see Ma at 11 in morn. Nellie rode Hattie and I Thurman and Willie Joe and came home at 1 and Willie rode Joe to town in eve to get medicine and Nellie and I rode back to Clara's and Nellie stayed and I came back just before sunset (and Pa too).
Wed. 20th. Clear and cold and dry from N till 10 and calm and pleasant balance of day. Pa walked to Clara's and back by 9 1/4 in morn and picked cotton balance of day on hilltop of Cherry cut. Willie and I dug the 8 short rows of potatoes on NE corner of Persimmon cut and hauled all of them in 2 cartloads and put in bbls in old potatoe stable by 12. We hauled in 11 cartloads in all from that patch - about 2 1/2 of seed and balance eating ones. Willie and I hauled in 3 cartloads of wood from field at 1 to 2 3/4 in eve and I rode Hattie to Clara's at 3 to 5 in eve and Nellie stayed there at night again.
Thu. 21st. Bright, nearly clear, and a slight freeze in morn but wind from S and warmer in eve. Pa walked to Clara's and back by 9 1/4 in morn and he picked cotton balance of day in Cherry cut. Willie and I plowed up potatoes in NE corner of orchard by 11 1/2 in morn and we hauled all of them in 3 loads (about 2 full cartloads in all) by 3 in eve and Willie got 2 sks pine straw and I rode Hattie to Clara's at 3 1/4 to 5 and Nellie came back with me. Ma is still very low.
Fri. 22nd. Cloudy and a damp S breeze all day and rained a hard little shower from S just before sunset. Pa walked to Clara's and back by 9 1/4 in morn and picked cotton balance of day in Cherry cut on W and SW and NW parts and Willie and I picked cotton all day in old Cane hollow. Nellie rode Hattie to Clara's in eve and came back in rain just before sunset. Ma seems better today.
Sat. 23rd. Cloudy and warm from S and dropped rain at sunset and rained slowly through night. Pa rode Hattie to Clara's and back by 9 1/4 and he picked cotton balance of morn and most of eve and finished Cherry cut (their cotton). Willie and I picked cotton all morn in Cane hollow and we brought Gussie's chester boar here (drove him) and put in our calf pasture at 12 1/2 to 1 1/2 and Willie walked hunting and I packed 26 turns of cotton seed from cotton house and put in old barn and packed wood in eve. Ma seems better today.
Sun. 24th. Cloudy and began to rain in slow showers from S at 9 in morn and lasted all day and part of night and it rained hard most of eve and night. A heavy fall of water in all. Pa walked to Clara's in morn and back through rain in eve. I had a dull headache all day till late in eve and it left me then. I rode Hattie to Clara's at 1 to 4 and carried some potatoes and molasses and I fed in rain late in eve. Ma seems better today. W.D. here most of day and all night.
Mon. 25th. Cloudy and began to rain at 8 in morn from SW and lasted till 2 and changed to NW and wind was high most of day and rain stopped at 3 and was very chilly at night. Pa, Willie and I started to work on orchard fence just N of cowpen in morn and rain stopped us at 8 1/2. Willie walked hunting in eve and I packed and cut up wood and picked up some potatoes for hogs late in eve. We didn't hear from Ma today.
Tue. 26th. Clear after 9 in morn and a cold N wind. Pa walked to Clara's and back by 9 1/2 in morn and picked cotton on H ridge balance of day. Willie and I finished orchard fence on W side at cowpen and E side of cowpen (hog-proof) by 9 1/2 in morn and picked cotton balance of day in old Cane hollow. Nellie rode Hattie to Clara's in eve. Ma is about the same.
Wed. 27th. Bright - a freeze and very white frost in morn, but warmer in eve. Pa walked to Clara's early in morn and back and packed some wood. Willie and I packed and cut up some wood early in morn and picked cotton in Cane hollow balance of day after 8 1/2 in morn. It was too frosty and cold to pick till after 10 in morn and we had a fire in old pine stump there. Pa picked cotton on H ridge all eve.
Thu. 28th. Bright, a slight freeze in morn but wind from SE and warmer and pleasant in eve. Willie and I picked cotton nearly all day in old Cane hollow. Pa walked to Clara's and back early in morn and picked cotton on H ridge balance of day and finished there late in eve. Cousins Mary and Sallie and Lucy dined here today. Lewis went to Aunt Mary's in morn. Nellie walked to Clara's in eve and stayed there all night.
Fri. 29th. Bright and pleasant from W. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton most of day in old Cane hollow and finished last of our cotton in field all but a little scraping. Nellie stayed at Clara's all day and at night again. Willie and I put our horses (all but Hattie and Joe) in field late in eve.
Sat. 30th. Bright and pleasant from NW. Willie rode Joe fox hunting before day in morn. Pa walked to Clara's and back by 11. I drove Hattie there and carried 2 sacks potatoes and jug molasses and brought Nellie back in buggy with me by 11 3/4. Ma seems very low. Pa and I drove Hattie to Cohen's in eve and returned before sunset. Dixie and Rena drove up Gipsy with heifer calf from cow pasture in eve.
