NOVEMBER 1893
Wed. Nov. 1st. Clear and pleasant from S but very dry. Willie and I picked peas in Pine corner till 10 in morn and Willie picked cotton with Pa in theirs in new SW corner balance of day and I picked there in eve. I dug some potatoes at 10 1/4 to 11 1/4 in morn.
Thu. 2nd. Bright and dry from S and pleasant. All of us but Pa and Willie went to town to a show at depot. Dixie and Nellie went on our buggy (with Hattie) and Rena went in buggy with Cousin Mary and I rode Salome. Pa picked cotton in new SW corner in morn and Willie peas in pine corner. Willie rode Joe to show at night with Bud. We got home at dusk. Clara and children went to show.
Fri. 3rd. Bright, but cloudy some and warmer from S. Willie and I picked peas in Pine corner most of morn and Pa picked cotton in new SW corner in morn and Willie and I picked there with Pa all eve.
Sat. 4th. It blew up and rained from NW at 7 1/2 to 10 1/2 in morn. A slow rain and wet ground about 1 inch - for it was very dry. We did nothing in morn. I picked a sack of peas at 10 1/2 to 11 1/2 and most of eve in Persimmon cut and got 40. Hodges preached at Lewis' at night and came here and stayed all night. All of us went but Pa and Nellie.
Sun. 5th. Cloudy and quite cool from N all morn and cleared off at 2 and clear balance of eve. All of us but Pa walked to Lewis' in morn and Hodges preached there at 11 1/2 to 12 1/2. Joe Miller, Gussie and Bud here in eve awhile.
Mon. 6th. Cloudy and chilly from E in morn and nearly clear in eve. Willie and I picked peas in Pine corner in morn and Willie picked there in eve. I drove Hattie to cart to Cohen's in eve and carried 1/2 doz hens and got a bbl of flour and some other things. Pa picked cotton in new SW corner all day.
Tue. 7th. Foggy, wet and chilly in morn and clear and pleasant from NW in eve. Pa, Willie and I began and dug potatoes all morn in cut by front gate on E side with Hattie and we fixed house, got some hay and hauled in 4 cartloads (3 of eating ones) in eve. Nellie and Clara and baby drove Gussie's horse, Thurman, to Tigner's in our buggy in morn.
Wed. 8th. Foggy till 9 1/2 and cloudy and began to rain slowly at 12 and lasted till 5 1/2 in eve. Pa, Willie and I dug potatoes all morn in cut by front gate on E. side and Willie and I hauled in a cartload of eating ones at 12 1/2 to 1 1/2. Rain stopped us and we left balance in patch and did nothing but get wood and feed on account of rain. Gussie here all eve.
Thu. 9th. Cloudy and sprinkled rain at 7 and brightened up at 9 and bright in eve. Pa, Willie and I hauled in 4 cartloads of potatoes in morn (dug yesterday and left out all night) and we dug and hauled in 4 loads more by late in eve (6 of them eating ones). Nellie and Clara and baby returned from Tigner's at 12 1/2.
Fri. 10th. Bright and cool and no rain. Pa, Willie and I dug potatoes by front gate on E. side in short part (Spanishes) and finished by 11 3/4 in morn. Willie and I hauled them in eve, 3 cartloads (with Hattie). We hauled in from that cut 16 cartloads in all - about 175 bu. Pa picked cotton in new SW corner in eve.
Sat. 11th. Bright and pleasant. Willie and I picked peas in Pine corner till 10 3/4 in morn and Pa picked cotton in new SW corner in morn. I gathered 3 baskets of hay in orchard and put on our potatoes in house and under new cotton house in eve. I got some pine straw and made new hens'nests and packed and cut up wood late in eve.
Sun. 12th. Bright and pleasant. Nellie and Rena drove Hattie to Primm's in morn and there all day (Rena stopped and stayed at Womack's). Haines dined here and we had Sunday School at Lewis' in eve.
Mon. 13th. Cloudy but bright in morn and dark cloudy and sprinkled rain slowly at dusk and after dark. Willie and I picked peas in Pine corner till 10 1/4 in morn and we began and cut and ricked cane in old cowpen part (next to new pen) balance of day. Pa picked cotton in new SW corner all day.
Tue. 14th. Cloudy and chilly from NE and began to rain in slow sprinkles at 10 in morn and lasted all eve and very chilly. Pa picked cotton in Cane hollow till 10 in morn. Willie and I picked peas in Pine corner till 10 in morn and cut and ricked cane at 10 1/4 to 11 1/2 and again in eve at 2 to 4. It rained so we got wet (nearly) through our clothes.
Wed. 15th. It cleared off cold last night and a killing freeze and white frost this morning and clear today. I don't think the frost injured our cane (standing uncut). Pa picked cotton most of day. Willie and I picked peas in Pine corner in morn and we cut and ricked cane in old cowpen part and in new part on NW side of orchard all eve.
Thu. 16th. Bright and slight freeze and white frost in morn but warmer from S in eve. Willie at Lewis' most of day helping Gussie to cut and strip his cane. Pa picked cotton all day in mine. I picked peas in Pine corner till 10 1/2 and hauled a load of corn with Hattie and cart by 12 1/4. I lay in bed most of eve vomiting with headache and suffered all night.
Fri. 17th. Bright but cloudy some and warmer from S and sprinkled rain in Summer-like sprinkles in eve a little. My headache got better early in morn and left me in eve. Pa picked cotton all day in Cane hollow. Willie and I picked peas in Pine corner till 10 1/4 and hauled in a full cartload of corn (the last) from there by 12 and we cut and picked cane in orchard in eve. Mrs. Mag McGraw and Lucy here all day and Maggie Miller and Leo came in morn and stayed all night.
Sat. 18th. Cloudy and drizzled rain till 8 1/2 in morn and quit and rained a hard shower in Woodville at 11 to 11 1/2 and quit till dark and rained a hard rain early in the night. Willie rode Salome fox hunting to Clara's at daylight and they killed a wild cat. Nellie and I drove Hattie to town and back by Cohen's at 8 1/2 to 3 in eve. I paid Mrs. Bailey $7.50 church money and Mrs. Cross $3.00 for Willie. Pa picked cotton in Cane hollow in morn. Maggie and Leo Miller still here.
Sun. 19th. Bright and cool from N.. All of us home all morn. Pa rode Hattie to Alice's in eve. Maggie and Leo went home in eve. I walked to Clara's and Nellie walked to Lewis' in eve.
Mon. 20th. Cloudy and a damp cool wind all day from SE and wind blew hard and rained some at night. Willie and I picked peas in Pine corner all morn and cut and ricked grinding cane on NW corner of orchard in eve. Pa picked cotton all day in Cane hollow and finished that cut.
Tue. 21st. Bright, nearly clear from W and pleasant. Willie and I picked peas in Pine corner all morn and finished that cut and we cut and ricked grinding cane all eve on W side of orchard. Pa picked cotton all day in Cherry cut. Miss Katie Ferguson and Adah Wigner here all day.
Wed. 22nd. Bright and pleasant. Willie rode Joe fox hunting with Buddy last night and they caught one and Willie and I skinned it early in morn and put it on to cook for dogs. Willie and I picked peas in Persimmon cut in morn and cut and ricked grinding cane in eve and finished last of cane. Pa picked cotton all day in Cherry cut. Nellie rode Hattie to Clara's in eve. Willie and I put all of our horses in field late in eve but Hattie and colt.
Thu. 23rd. Bright and a cold N wind all day. Pa picked cotton most of day on H ridge. Willie and I dug the slip patch of potatoes in orchard in morn and hauled them in 3 loads with Hattie in eve (abt. 33 bu.).
Fri. 24th. Clear, a hard freeze in morn and a cold NE wind all day. Willie and I put poles at bottom of orchard wire fence most of morn and finished. Pa picked cotton most of day and Willie and I picked in eve in new SW corner.
Sat. 25th. A hard freeze in morn and cloudy and a chilly E wind all day. I carried 17 grown chickens to Cohen's at 9 to 1 on buggy with Hattie and returned at 1. Mrs. Morris here all day. Willie rode Salome fox hunting all day and Bud dined here.
Sun. 26th. It rained all day from SE and chilly and wind changed to NW late in eve and rained hard with some thunder till 11 at night. Lewis and Joe Miller came at 10 1/2 and Joe stayed till 2 1/2 in eve.
Mon. 27th. Cloudy and cool NW wind all day. Willie and I cut and packed out poles in new SW corner by locust thicket for wood for making molasses till 11 in morn and he and I stripped grinding cane most of eve. Pa rode Hattie to Cohen's in morn and dined at Clara's and returned at 2.
Tue. 28th. Clear, frost in morn, but wind from S and warmer in eve. Willie and I stripped grinding cane all day on W side of orchard. Pa picked cotton most of day in new SW corner. Nellie and Rena drove Hattie to Chester Henderson's in eve.
Wed. 29th. Bright and pleasant from SW. Willie rode Salome fox hunting before daylight and returned at 10 1/2. I stripped grinding cane all morn and most of eve and Willie helped after 10 1/2 in morn. Pa picked cotton most of day in Sims' field SE of here (on halves).
Thu. 30th. Foggy and wet till 11 and bright and warm from SW in eve. Pa picked cotton all day in Sims' field. Willie and I hauled 3 loads of wood from new SW corner and 3 loads of cane to Lewis' (to mill) by 2 and we ground and cooked some late in eve and at night (we worked Hattie and Flirt all day).
