MAY 1916

Mon. May 1st. Cloudy and windy from S most of day and thunder clouds came up from SW nearly all night and we had a big fall of water all together. Willie had hands hoeing corn today. I hoed watermelons in old tomatoe patch in morn.

Tue. 2nd. Cloudy all day and windy from SE and began to rain in thunder showers at night from SW and lasted all night - a very heavy fall of water in all and washed fields very bad. Willie and Dud scraped sweet potatoes in field in eve. I was sick last night and took 2 pills which worked me well today.

Wed. 3rd. The rain quit at daylight and bright today but some clouds. Willie and Dud worked on water gaps at fence on creek most of day. I walked in field early in morn to see how the big rain had washed up crop. I was sick all day and had fever and pain in my right side in eve and at night but polticed my side and slept well at night.

Thu. 4th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool from NW. Willie and Dud scraped sweet potatoes in field in morn and Willie had hands scraping cotton in eve. I got wood for Leah to wash early in morn and sat about house most of day very unwell.

Fri. 5th. Bright and warm. Willie and hands scraped cotton in morn and Willie and Dud scraped in eve and finished. I walked in field in morn and sat about house most of day unwell but a little better than on yesterday.

Sat. 6th. Bright and warm most of day. Willie scraped sugar cane in morn and Dud ran cultivator in cotton. Willie and Marion drove Sandy to town in eve. I set out some tomatoes in old garden in morn.

Sun. 7th. Bright and warm and some dark clouds but no rain. Nellie and Charles and Carl drove Nancy to Dixie's early in morn and returned late in eve. Gordon dined here. Carmel went to Campbellite church in town with Ruby and Janie in morn. Willie and Minnie and children went to SS in eve.

Mon. 8th. Bright and warm and no rain. Willie split middles in cotton and Dud ran cultivator ahead of him. Marion replanted corn in Sims' bottom. I set out some tomatoes in new garden and hoed onions and peas and some of bush beans there in morn.

Tue. 9th. Bright and warm. Willie and Dud plowed cotton today. Marion replanted corn in Sims' bottom in morn and finished it. I hoed in new garden in morn. Mrs. Flinn and Mrs. McCarstle came at 12 and left in eve.

Wed. 10th. Bright and warm. Willie and Dud plowed corn and Marion ran cultivator in corn with Sandy. I hoed in new garden in morn and finished it.

Thu. 11th. Bright and warm and getting dry. Marion ran cultivator with Sandy in corn and Willie and Dud molded corn today. I hoed around hills of watermelons in old patch and hoed a part of Watson melons in tomatoe patch in morn.

Fri. 12th. Bright and very warm and getting dry. Marion ran cultivator in corn in morn and Willie and Dud molded corn all day. I hoed Watson melons in tomatoe patch in morn. Marion rode Sandy on creek in eve and drove up dry cattle and I helped him to get them in pasture to dip on tomorrow.

Sat. 13th. Bright and warm and dry. Willie and Marion and Dud drove our cattle and dipped them early in morn and Dud ran cultivator in corn with Sandy till 12. I hoed watermelons in tomatoe patch in morn. Willie sent by Wiley and got a new well rope in eve.

Sun. 14th. Bright and warm and dry but a breeze from SW all day and some appearance of rain late in eve. Willie and Minnie drove Sandy to College to hear commencement sermon in morn and returned at 2 in eve. Carmel and Charles walked to SS in eve.

Mon. 15th. Bright in morn and cloudy in eve and very warm and thundered around some in eve and rained a little late in night. Willie and Dud plowed corn and Marion ran cultivator with Sandy in corn. I hoed watermelons and replanted them in tomatoe patch in morn and burned chicken lice in eve.

Tue. 16th. We had a good little rain from NW with some little thunder at daylight in morn - and much needed too - and cool and bright from NW all day and clear all night and cool. Willie and Dud plowed corn today. Marion rain cultivator in corn with Sandy in morn and finished old corn. Minnie and Carmel amd Marion went with Wiley and family to College at night and returned at midnight. I hoed watermelons in tomato patch in morn.

Wed. 17th. Clear and cool in morn and warm in eve and clouded up late in eve and rained some in night. Willie and Dud plowed corn today. Nellie and Carmel and Marion went with Wiley and family to College in morn and returned late in eve. I hoed tomatoes in tomatoe patch early in morn and hoed onions in old garden by 10 1/4 in morn. Mrs. James and Annabel came at dusk.

Thu. 18th. It began to rain slowly early in morn and got harder at 9 and lasted till 11 in morn - a good soaking rain and didn't wash at all - and cloudy some all eve and cool. Willie and Dud plowed corn till 9 1/2 in morn and got wet and they barred off late corn in back of field in eve. I set out some tomatoes and watermelons in field in eve. Mrs. James and Annabel still here.

Fri. 19th. Bright and cool in morn early but warmer in eve. Mrs. James and Annabel left early in morn. Willie and Dud barred off late corn today. I got wood for Leah to wash early in morn and hoed watermelon patch in morn.

Sat. 20th. Bright and warm in morn and cloudy in eve and a thunder cloud came up from S at 5 in eve and we had a hard shower till 6 and bright late in eve. Willie and Dud finished barring off late corn in patch E of here by 9 1/2 in morn and plowed part of potatoe patch in field by 12. Willie drove Sandy to town in eve. I hoed row of peach trees in patch E of here in morn. Mr. Lanehart sick in night and sent for Nellie and Willie.

Sun. 21st. Cloudy and began to rain at 10 in morn and lasted all eve and till late in night - a big fall of water in all. Nora brought Nellie home in eve and left late in eve.

Mon. 22nd. Cloudy and began to rain slowly at 10 in morn and lasted till 12 and sun shined a little in eve. Dud cut briars and weeds in field part of morn and helped Willie and me to get out some bread corn in eve. Willie fixed water gaps in eve.

Tue. 23rd. Bright and warm and no rain. Willie and Dud cut weeds in field in morn and hoed corn in patch N of here in eve. Dud rode Sandy over creek to get hands late in eve. I cut or dug up Chickasaw briars in lot around here in morn.

Wed. 24th. Bright and warm and no rain. Willie and Dud and some hands hoed corn in patch N of here and in patch E of here and finished both patches late in eve. Dixie and 2 of her little boys here today. I dug up Chickasaw briars in morn and finished all in wire fence around the house. I got wood for Leah to wash early in morn.

Thu. 25th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. Willie and Dud hoed corn in morn and Leah too and Sophia too in eve. I hoed about 1/2 of new garden in morn.

Fri. 26th. Bright and very warm and no rain in sight. Willie finished barring off corn in Sims' bottom and molded some corn in morn and he and Dud layed by corn in eve. Jack and Leah and Sophia hoed corn today. I hoed in new garden in morn and finished it and I helped Marion and Buddy to get our cattle into our pasture late in eve.

Sat. 27th. Bright and very warm and no rain in sight. Willie and Marion and Dud drove our cattle to dip in morn early and Willie rode Sandy and Dud drove wagon to town and carried 4 bus of corn to mill and returned at 2 1/2 in eve. I hoed part of watermelons in old tomatoe patch in morn.

Sun. 28th. Bright and very warm and no rain. Willie and Charles and Carl and I walked to Wiley's and back in morn. All except Charles and Carl and me went to SS in eve and Bro Ellis preached there.

Mon. 29th. Bright and very warm and no rain. Willie and Dud layed by corn in Gate cut and Marion sowed peas there. Henry ran cultivator with Sandy in corn. Leah and Sophia hoed corn in Sims' bottom. I hoed watermelons in old tomatoe patch in morn.

Tue. 30th. Bright, but cloudy some, and a breeze from W most of day. Willie and Dud layed by corn and Marion sowed peas and Henry ran cultivator in corn with Sandy. I hoed watermelons and tomatoes and pepper in old tomatoe patch in morn and finished there.

Wed. 31st. Bright and warm and dry. Willie and Dud layed by corn and Marion sowed peas and Henry ran cultivator with Sandy in cotton. I hoed part of old watermelon patch in morn and got wood and water and fed and drew water for washing in eve.
