MAY 1914
Fri. May 1st. Bright, and pleasant and no rain. Willie and Dud barred off corn with the mules today. I packed old poles from bean hollow to pumpkin hollow and stuck pole beans there in morn and some in eve too. Edna Ford and baby here most of day and little Mary too.
Sat. 2nd. Bright and pleasant most of day but cloudy late in eve and sprinkled rain a little in night. Willie and Dud barred off corn in morn and they both drove Sandy to town in eve. I stuck beans awhile in morn and some in eve too and finished and hoed turnips and planted some eggplants in garden.
Sun. 3rd. Bright and warm till 3 in eve and sprinkled rain some at 4 1/2. Willie and Minnie and Carl drove Sandy to buggy to John Morris' in morn and Buddy and Marion rode Nancy then too and all returned late in eve. Wiley went to his Pa's in morn and Rena and her other 3 children here today. I picked some strawberries in morn.
Mon. 4th. Bright, but cloudy some, and a wind from SW all day and looked like rain all day but only sprinkled a little late in eve. Willie and Marion and Dud planted corn all day. I cut and set forks most of day for butter beans in pumpkin hollow.
Tue. 5th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight today. Willie and Marion and Dud planted corn till 3 1/2 in eve and finished last of it and Willie and Dud barred off corn balance of eve. I cut and packed bean poles in morn and set out and watered some tomatoes in garden in eve.
Wed. 6th. Bright and very warm and some clouds and no rain but thunder and lightning in N and E at night. Willie and Dud finished barring off 2nd planting of corn at 3 in eve and molded boat corn in patch E of here balance of eve. I hoed over most of garden today.
Thu. 7th. Bright and quite warm till 3 in eve and clouded up from NW then and a thunder cloud came up from NW at 5 in eve and we had some wind and thunder and hail and a good little shower of rain, and needed too, and clear at night. Willie molded corn in patch E of here and finished late in eve. Dud ran cultivator on corn middles in field with Sandy till the rain. I cut and packed bean poles in morn for butter beans in pumpkin hollow.
Fri. 8th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool from N and no rain in sight. Willie ran cultivator on corn middles with Sandy today. Dud and Sophia and Leah hoed corn today. I hoed okra and pole beans in pumpkin hollow in morn and in eve too.
Sat. 9th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool from N. Willie and Dud ran cultivators on corn middles in morn and Willie drove Sandy to town in eve and brought Dan back from town. He has been at Lewis Millers' for 1 week. I hoed beans in pumpkin hollow in morn.
Sun. 10th. Clear and pleasant. Nellie and Marion and little Wiley drove Nancy to our buggy to see Tom and Hattie and carried some strawberries which Marion and I picked. I walked to Wiley's in eve. Willie and Minnie and Carmel and Charles and Carl went to SS in eve.
Mon. 11th. Bright, nearly clear. and pleasant from S. Willie and Dud ran cultivators on corn middles today and Leah and Sophia hoed corn. I hoed butter beans and stuck some of them in pumpkin hollow today.
Tue. 12th. Bright, but some clouds all day, and appearance of rain. Willie and Dud molded corn and Leah and Sophia hoed corn today. I hoed around hills of watermelons and hoed some tomatoes in Sims' bottom in morn and hoed 1/2 of squash patch there in eve. Minnie and Carl and Rena and little Nellie drove Nancy to see Hattie in morn and returned late in eve.
Wed. 13th. Cloudy and very little sunshine all day and cool from E of N and dropped rain a little late in eve. Willie and Dud molded corn and Sophia and Harrison hoed corn and Leah too in eve. I hoed last 1/2 of squashes and some tomatoes in Sims' bottom in morn.
Thu. 14th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool from E of N and no rain in sight. Willie and Dud molded corn today. Harrison and Sophia and Leah hoed corn today. I cut and packed poles and stuck last of butter beans in morn and tied poles in eve.
Fri. 15th. Bright and cool and dry from NE. Willie and Dud molded corn and Harrison and Sophia hoed corn all day and Leah too in eve - she washed here in morn - and I got the wood for her. I hoed pepper and tomatoe in Sims' bottom in morn and hoed some in garden in eve. I have a cold and suffered in eve and all night with asthma.
Sat. 16th. Bright and cool early in morn and warmer in eve and cloudy some and rained a slow sprinkle in night. Willie molded corn in morn and Dud and Harrison hoed corn. I hoed in tomatoe patch in morn. Willie drove our mules to Lewis' wagon to Elmwood in eve and hauled some rough plank for Lewis to the schoolhouse in eve. I suffered all day with asthma but rested well at night.
Sun. 17th. Bright and dry and pleasant but sprinkled rain a little in night. Gordon dined here and went with Nellie and Willie and Minnie to SS in eve and Bro Ellis preached there. I walked to Wiley's and back in eve and Jack D and sister, Ellen were at Wiley's.
Mon. 18th. Bright and pleasant from S --- in morn and thunder clouds passed around from SE late in eve and near, but only sprinkled a little here. Willie plowed cane in patch E of here and some of boat corn there today. Dud ran cultivator ahead of plowing. I hoed in watermelon patch in morn and hoed about 1/3 of it.
Tue. 19th. Cloudy some but bright today and no rain in sight. Willie layed by corn in patch SE of here today and finished late in eve and Dud ran cultivator on corn middles in field today. I hoed about 1/3 more of watermelon patch in morn. We had a birthday dinner for Carmel today and Wiley and family and a crowd of children dined here.
Wed. 20th. Bright and dry and pleasant from SE and no rain in sight today. Willie planted corn and Dud ran cultivator on corn middles today. I hoed watermelon patch till 11 in morn and finished last of patch.
Thu. 21st. Bright and dry and no rain in sight. Willie plowed corn and Dud ran cultivator on corn middles today. I hoed okra and beans in pumpkin hollow in morn and shucked some bread corn in eve.
Fri. 22nd. Bright and dry and no rain in sight. Willie and Dud plowed corn today. I finished hoeing beans and cut some bushes and vines among the plum trees in morn and had fever all eve and night too. Rena and Bernice and Marion and Buddy and Carl went in Surry to Corn-Ex in town at night.
Sat. 23rd. Bright and dry and no rain in sight. Dud plowed corn in morn and Willie rode Sandy and saw all of our cattle and Willie drove Sandy to town in eve. I took Livertone last night which worked me well today but I had fever again in eve and at night.
Sun. 24th. Bright and warm and dry and no rain but a thunder cloud in sight in S late in eve. I was feverish all day and night too and sweat some through the night. All except Nellie and Carl and me went to SS in eve and Rev Morrow preached there. I began to take Warburys' early in morn.
Mon. 25th. Bright and warm all morn and rained around in thunder showers most of eve but only sprinkled here. Willie got Wiley's mower early in morn and mowed down his oat patch out N of here by 12. Marion and Dud moved the fallen oats ahead of machine. Willie and Dud plowed corn in eve. I was feverish and ached all day but fever didn't rise and I sweat good deal all night but slept well. Tue. 26th. Bright and warm all morn and rained around in thunder showers most of eve and we had rain enough to make a little mud at 3 to 4. Willie and Dud plowed corn till 10 in morn and hauled in oats at 10 to 12 and again in eve till 3 and finished there and they plowed corn till 6 3/4 in eve. I hunted hens' nests in morn and shucked and shelled some bread corn in eve.
Wed. 27th. Bright in morn and rained around in thunder showers in eve from S and we had a good one at 2 1/2 and another at 4 1/2 which wet ground pretty well and much needed too. Willie and Dud plowed corn till the last rain in eve and got nearly wet then. I hoed around and thinned in squashes in morn. Rena and Bernice and Buddy drove Nancy to our buggy to town in eve.
Thu. 28th. Cloudy all day and a damp breeze from SE but no rain today. Willie and Dud plowed corn all day. I got wood for Leah to wash early in morn and set out some tomatoes in Sims' bottom most of morn and watered them in eve and shelled some bread corn too.
Fri. 29th. Bright and warm but cloudy some all day and a damp breeze from SE but no rain today. Willie and Dud plowed corn today. I shucked and shelled and winnowed some bread corn all morn and set out 19 hills of sage in garden in eve.
Sat. 30th. Bright and warm and no rain but cloudy and sultry all eve. Willie and Dud plowed corn in morn and Dud quit at 9 1/2 to go to a Society meeting. Willie drove Sandy to town in eve and carried 5 p'ks of corn and got it ground. I set out some tomatoes and watered them in Sims' bottom in morn by 9 and got wood and water and fed and helped to milk in eve.
Sun. 31st. Bright and warm and dry and no rain in sight today. Wiley went to his Pa's in morn and Rena and children dined here and took John home sick just after dinner. Cap D came for Nellie in eve. Hattie is still sick. Willie and children went to SS in eve.
