MAY 1895

Wed. May 1st. Warm and cloudy and a damp S breeze all day and dropped rain at dark. Pa, Willie and I planted whip peas with hoes in old pea ground and finished at 8 1/2 in morn and we planted corn with hoes in 2nd Cane hollow balance of morn and Pa and Willie planted there all eve. I drove Hattie to old buggy to Cohen's in eve. Our fat sow gave birth to 5 pigs (Berkshires) in morn.

Thu. 2nd. Warm and cloudy and a damp S breeze in morn and bright in eve and quite warm. I barred off corn all day with Hattie in Pine corner and in new SW corner and Pa and Willie hoed all day in Pine corner.

Fri. 3rd. Bright and warm from SW and no signs of rain. I barred off corn in new SW corner with Hattie all morn and finished all to log ground part by 11 1/4. Pa and Willie hoed corn there all day and I hoed with them in eve. Mrs. Katie Ogden and "Beckie" here most of day and Mr. Tabor, too.

Sat. 4th. Cloudy some but bright and warm from S and appearance of rain late in eve. Pa, Willie and I marked our (7) calves and castrated 2 bulls, 1 1/2 years old, a red and a white back one, early in morn and we hilled our Irish potatoes with hoes by 9 and I made a new hoe handle and put in Pa's hoe by 10 1/4. Willie rode Joe to baseball in eve and didn't get back till 11 at night from Gussie's. Lucy McGraw brought Rena home in our buggy at 11 1/2 and Lucy left on horseback late in eve. I fixed wire fence from yard to cowpen in eve by putting new stakes and more rails.

Sun. 5th. Bright and warm and dry from SE. Nellie drove Hattie and I rode Joe to town for Mrs. Baker (in morn) but she was too sick to come and we returned at 12 1/4. Bud and W.D. here all day and Lewis' and family in eve and Dudley W and George F late in eve and Beau C here most of eve. I had a dull headache all day and all night and slept but little.

Mon. 6th. Bright and warm most of day and a thundershower passed around W from SW late in eve. Pa and Willie hoed corn all day in new SW corner. I lay down and vomited with headache till 7 1/2 in morn and I made a muzzle at 8 and harrowed all of corn middles in cut by front gate on both sides twice to row by 11 1/2 and all of boat corn in Gate cut in eve by sunset with Hattie. Dixie and Cousin Mary drove Thurman to our buggy to town to see Mrs. Baker and she was better. My headache got better at 1 in eve.

Tue. 7th. Warm and cloudy and rained E of here not far off in thundershowers at 12 to 1 and sprinkled here and rained W of here most of eve in thundershowers. I barred off corn in new SW corner all morn and till 3 1/4 in eve and finished there and I plowed boat corn on poor E end of Gate cut (by H ridge) balance of eve (Hattie) and Pa and Willie hoed corn all day in new SW corner. Lucy McGraw came late in eve and here all night.

Wed. 8th. Bright and warm most of day but thundershowers passed around SE from NE some in eve. Pa and Willie hoed corn all day in new SW corner and finished there in eve late. I plowed Dent corn in Gate cut all morn with Hattie (laying by) and I drove her to cart to Cohen's in eve and got a bbl. flour and 2 bu. meal and a plow point on credit and returned one hour by sun. Jim Sessions here awhile in eve (electioneering).

Thu. 9th. Cloudy some all day and a thunder cloud came up from N at 10 in morn but rained slowly here at 10 1/4 to 2 - a good little rain in all. I barred off cotton (Pa's and Willie's) in Cherry cut from Cherry stump on hilltop to other stump by 10 and rain ran us home then. Pa and Willie scraped cotton there till 10 in morn and all eve. I plowed Dent corn in Gate cut all eve and finished that cut all but 3 rows on lower side.

Fri. 10th. Bright and warm till 11 and a thunder cloud came up from NW at 11 1/2 to 12 1/2 but only sprinkled here and it thundered and showered around most of eve and another cloud came up from NW at 9 at night but only sprinkled here. I barred off cotton till 11 in morn in Cherry cut in new part on W and SW sides and Pa and Willie scraped there all day. I plowed corn by front gate all on E side in eve (Hattie all day).

Sat. 11th. Bright and pleasant till 9 in morn and clouded up then from NW and thundered around till 12 and turned cool at 11 from NW and drizzled from 12 to 2 and cloudy all eve and cleared off at sunset. I barred off cotton about 1 1/2 hours in Cherry cut early in morn and then I plowed corn in cut by front gate and little patch beyond road from 8 in morn till 3 1/4 in eve and finished that cut then. Pa and Willie scraped cotton on W side of Cherry cut most of morn. Willie rode Joe to baseball in eve and Dan here awhile in eve. Charlie Turner came late in eve and got a white sow pig which I gave him.

Sun. 12th. Clear and quite cool and wind from N all day. Dixie drove Hattie to town for Mrs.Baker in morn and they returned at 3 in eve. Mr. Wesley Chambers here most of day. Nellie walked to Lewis' late in eve after Mrs. Baker went there.

Mon. 13th. Clear and quite cool early in morn but wind from S of W and warmer in eve. I barred off cotton in Cherry cut and old Cane hollow all morn and Pa and Willie scraped there all day (in Cherry cut in morn and in Cane hollow in eve). I harrowed corn middles in Pine corner all eve (Hattie all day).

Tue. 14th. Clear and pleasant and dry from W. I barred off cotton in Cane hollow till 11 in morn and finished there and Pa and Willie scraped cotton there all day. I harrowed whip peas on SE corner of Persimmon cut up to Cherry stump running twice between rows (they haven't been barred off) and finished that cut by late in eve. Misses Joella and Jennie Glass came at 11 3/4 from town.

Wed. 15th. Bright and pleasant from SW. Pa and Willie finished scraping cotton in Cane hollow at 3 in eve and they hoed corn in 2nd Cane hollow (planted with hoes) balance of eve. I harrowed whip peas on poor E end of Gate cut and on NE corner of Cherry cut running twice between rows and finished them at 10 in morn and I harrowed corn middles balance of day in Pine corner and new SW corner (Hattie all day). Mrs. Baker here all day.

Thu. 16th. Bright but cloudy some all day and thundered some far off. Pa and Willie hoed corn all day in 2nd Cane hollow. I harrowed corn middles in new SW corner all morn and finished - I went once to row over most of it and I plowed corn in new SW corner all eve (Hattie all day). Mrs. Baker here all day. Ed Ogden sent buggy after Nellie at sunset and she went.

Fri. 17th. Cloudy and quite cool from N all day and sprinkled rain some at 9 1/2 in morn and again at 12 to 12 1/2. Pa and Willie hoed corn all day in new 2nd Cane hollow and I plowed corn all day in new SW corner. I plowed hillside S of gully in morn and I plowed hillside from W line to wet bottom in eve (Hattie all day). Nellie did not return from Ogden's.

Sat. 18th. Bright and cool from N and dry. I plowed corn in new SW corner till 10 1/2 in morn and got to log ground. Pa and Willie hoed corn there in ground not plowed. Willie carried Salome to Sims' early in morn and she took his horse (Adlai). I cut briars in oat patch in Gate cut and cut down bushes and briars on roadside between H ridge and bars in eve. Beckie Ogden brought Nellie home in eve and Rena went back with her. Bro. Bishop here at night and W.D. came home with Willie from baseball game and here to supper.

Sun. 19th. Bright and pleasant but very dry. Willie rode Joe to Union Church in morn. Bud and Wiley D here all day. W.D. drove Hattie to Ed Ogden's for Rena at 5 1/2 to 8 in eve.

Mon. 20th. Bright and warm till 3 in eve and clouded up from SW and rained in that direction far off most of eve and sprinkled here at 6 1/2 in eve. I barred off cotton in orchard on NE side and plowed on through sugar cane on NW, running 4 furrows in it all morn and Pa and Willie scraped cotton there all morn and I barred off cotton on H ridge all eve and Pa and Willie scraped there in eve. Mrs. Baker started school at Lewis' today.

Tue. 21st. Cloudy some all day and showers passed around from NE to E and sprinkled here at 4 in eve. I finished barring off cotton in orchard and plowed out all of sugar cane by 10 and finished barring off last of H ridge cotton by 4 in eve and planted little corn in Pine corner hollow at 4 1/4 to 6 1/4 in eve. Pa and Willie finished scraping cotton in orchard by 8 in morn and scraped on H ridge balance of day.

Wed. 22nd. Bright all morn but cloudy some and cloudy in eve and began to rain slowly at 2 1/4 in eve and got harder toward night

and lasted till in night from NE. Pa and Willie finished scraping last of our cotton on H ridge by 9 in morn and Pa went over corn in new SW corner and Willie scraped potatoes till 4 in eve and rain stopped them. I plowed corn all morn in new SW corner in log ground part in N side of drain and got down to it. I drove Hattie to Cohen's in eve to new buggy and it rained on me all the way from Surgett's there and back but I didn't get wet. I had a dull headache last Sunday and Monday and had running off of bowels yesterday and early this morn and had little fever from 10 this morn and balance of day. I got a bottle of Grove's Chill Tonic from Cohen's in eve.

Thu. 23rd. We had a pretty good rain in all on yesterday eve and last night and wet all of broken ground pretty well but not muddy. Cloudy all today from SE and rained another little shower at 8 to 9 at night. I plowed corn all day in new SW corner between gully and wire in morn and in Pine corner in eve. Pa went over corn with hoe all day in Gate cut and by from gate in morn and in new SW corner in eve. Willie scraped potatoes in Persimmon cut most of day and finished them late in eve. I had a dull and feverish pain in left side of my head all day but it left me late in eve and I felt better at night.

Fri. 24th. Cloudy and began to shower from NE at 8 in morn and lasted till 11 and quit till 2 in eve and began again and lasted till in night - a heavy fall of water in all and much needed. I plowed corn in new SW corner by wire fence about 2 hours early in morn and rain stopped me and Pa went over corn there with hoe till rain. We went back there at 1 1/2 and rain ran us home at 2 1/2 and we got nearly wet. Willie began to harrow cotton middles in Cherry cut with Joe in morn but rain stopped him in less than 2 hours.

Sat. 25th. Cloudy all morn and showered W of here at 10 1/2 and sprinkled here and bright and warm in eve and rained a thunder shower at 12 to 1 at night. Pa, Willie and I worked on calf pasture fence just E from bars and finished repairing last of it by 10 1/2 in morn. I hauled a cartload of board timber hearts for stakes from cow pasture early in morn. Pa walked to Clara's in eve and Willie rode Hattie to baseball game and I stopped pig cracks all around calf pasture and got some huckleberries in eve.

Sun. 26th. Bright and pleasant from NW and no rain today. Beau C and Mrs. Baker here all day and W.D. and Dan and Lewis and family here in eve. I had a dull headache all day in right side and it left me in eve. Beau C and W.D. stayed for supper.

Mon. 27th. Bright and warm from SW and no rain but appearance of rain. Pa hoed whip peas in Persimmon cut all day and Willie harrowed cotton middles with Joe all day in Cherry cut and some in old Cane hollow. I plowed corn in new SW corner on hillside between wire and drain and finished there at 3 1/2 in eve and plowed corn in Pine corner balance of eve (Hattie all day).

Tue. 28th. Cloudy and warm from S and rained slowly a little in eve and at night. Willie finished harrowing cotton middles in old Cane hollow in morn and he molded cotton in Cherry cut on upper side in eve (Joe all day). I finished laying by corn in Pine corner at 4 3/4 in eve (after plowing there all day) and I molded 5 rows of cotton by upper Cherry stump late in eve. Pa hoed in whip peas all day.

Wed. 29th. Bright but cloudy some and a good strong S breeze all day. Willie plowed cotton all day (4 furrows) in Cherry cut with Joe and I plowed Hattie there all eve. Nellie and I drove her to town in morn and returned at 12. Pa hoed in whip peas all day in old whip pea ground on NE corner of Cherry cut and finished that patch late in eve.

Thu. 30th. Bright and warm and no rain - a pleasant S breeze all day. Pa hoed in whip peas in poor E end of Gate cut in morn and went over corn in Pine corner in eve. Willie and I plowed cotton all day in Cherry cut on W and SW sides and finished that cut late in eve (Hattie and Joe).

Fri. 31st. Bright and warm from S most of day. Thundershowers passed around some in eve but no rain here. Willie and I plowed cotton all day in Cane hollow (Hattie and Joe). Pa hoed whip peas on poor E end of Gate cut in morn and went over corn in new SW corner in eve. William Neyland came here at sunset and stayed all night.
