MARCH 1920
Mon. Mar. 1st. Bright and very cold early in morn and a very white frost and hard freeze but warmer in eve and all of ice melted. Dud and Wiley and Joe broke ground in Gate cut in eve. I packed and cut up some stove wood in morn and packed some ashes in old garden and put on Irish potatoes in eve.
Tue. 2nd. Bright but cloudy some all day and not quite cold enough to freeze in morn and wind from S and warmer in eve. Dud and Wiley and Joe broke ground in Gate cut in morn and out in field in eve. Willie got out seed corn today and I helped him to shell it in eve. I packed ashes in old garden and put on Irish potatoes in morn.
Wed. 3rd. Bright but cloudy some and a damp wind from S all day and rained a big rain at night. Dud and Wiley and Joe broke ground today. I hoed in new garden on east side in morn and helped Willie to shell some seed corn in eve.
Thu. 4th. We had a big rain last night and cold and bright from N all day. Willie drove Buck and Jim mule to Ford's in morn and brought Carmel home at dusk. I packed and cut up some mulberry stove wood in morn and got wood and fed stock in eve.
Fri. 5th. Clear and a hard freeze and frost in morn and got very little warmer all day - a cold wind from N all day. Dud and Wiley and Joe broke ground in eve. Willie hunted cattle most of day and saw all of them. I packed and cut up stove wood in morn.
Sat. 6th. Clear and a very hard freeze and frost in morn and didn't get much warmer all day and a cold wind from N all day -ground frozen too hard to plow in morn. Willie and Carmel drove Buck and Sandy to town in morn and returned in eve. Luster brought Lucile late in eve and stayed all night. I packed and cut up 2 turns of stove wood in morn.
Sun. 7th. A hard freeze and white frost in morn and a cold breeze from N all day. Willie drove the mules early in morn and carried Carmel to Ford's and returned just after dark. Luster James left early in morn. Gordon dined here. Minnie and Lucile and Charles and Carl walked to SS in eve.
Mon. 8th. Cloudy and no sun and wind from E and snowed some till 9 and quit and all melted by late in eve. Lucile taught school but only had 5 pupils. Dud and Wiley and Willie sawed down some mossy trees for cows in morn. It rained a little in eve.
Tue. 9th. Cloudy and no sun and chilly from SE and dropped rain some in morn and rained in little showers most of eve. I packed and cut up some stove wood early in morn and hoed some on E side of new garden till 11 3/4. Dud and Wiley and Joe broke ground in morn and awhile in eve.
Wed. 10th. Cloudy and rained most of day but not much in eve - a big fall of water in all but didn't wash much. No one at work. B C came at 11 in morn and told us that Dickie Chambers died last night and Willie went over there in eve and carried Miss Cook and Willie returned about sunset.
Thu. 11th. Cloudy and no sun and began to rain at 12 and lasted all eve from S - a big fall of water in all. Willie rode Sandy and Nellie and Lucile drove Buck to Dickie Chambers burying in morn and returned at 12 just as rain began. I made some boxes for hens' nests in morn.
Fri. 12th. Bright but cloudy some and warm in morn and wind changed to NW early in eve and turned very cool before night. Willie and Dud and Wiley cut some catalpa posts and worked on fence around Coon field today. I made some boxes for nests in morn.
Sat. 13th. Clear and very cool early in morn but a pleasant day. Willie and Dud ringed all of hogs early in morn and Willie and Minnie drove Buck to town and returned in eve. Dud and Wiley drove wagon to town to mill and returned in eve. I dug up some peach seed in old garden planted more than a year ago in morn and planted them again. I found them sprouting. I planted a few peas in new garden in eve and dug dirt away from those coming up.
Sun. 14th. Bright, nearly clear, and very cool early in morn but wind from SW and a pleasant day. All went to SS in eve but Nellie and me. Cap D here awhile late in eve.
Mon. 15th. Cloudy and windy from S most of day but no rain. Willie and hands stripped and planted cane in back of field by 3 1/2 in eve and hands planted corn on H ridge balance of eve and Willie broke ground in patch E of here with Sandy and Daisie. I hoed in new garden on east side in morn.
Tue. 16th. Cloudy and no sun and rained in little showers most of eve. Willie broke ground in patch E of here in morn and hands planted corn till 3 in eve and rain stopped them and they broke ground balance of eve and in the rain most of time. I hoed in new garden in morn.
Wed. 17th. Cloudy and dropped and sprinkled rain all day but didn't rain much in all. Dud and Wiley broke ground all day but ground was too wet to plow well. Willie patched fence around patch N of here on yard side in morn and cut and split a poplar for hoe handles in eve. I packed manure from stables and wood shed and put in new garden in morn.
Thu. 18th. Cloudy some all day and warm from SW but no rain. Dud and Wiley planted corn today. Willie broke ground in patch E of here with Sandy and Daisie. I packed some ashes in old garden and put on Irish potatoes and some from stables and put in new garden in morn.
Fri. 19th. We had a big washing rain just after daylight in morn. Willie and Dud and Wiley hunted and found old Lady cow dead and skinned her early in morn - she drowned. I cut up some stove wood in morn. Too wet to work today.
Sat. 20th. Bright and cool from N. Dud and Wiley broke ground in patch N of here in morn. Willie and Lucile drove Sandy to town in eve and returned at dark. I cut up some stove wood in morn and got wood and water and fed everything in eve.
Sun. 21st. Bright and very cool early in morn and warm in eve and beautiful and pleasant day. All walked to SS in eve but Nellie and me.
Mon. 22nd. Bright and cool early in morn and wind from E and pleasant day. Dud and Wiley planted corn today. Willie broke ground in patch N of here and in patch E of here and finished breaking both patches (for cotton) today. I hoed in new garden on east side in morn and I replanted bought peas in new garden in eve.
Tue. 23rd. Bright and pleasant. Willie and hands planted corn today. I hoed onions in new garden and dug around peas there - they are trying to come up - most of day.
Wed. 24th. Cloudy and a damp wind form S and SE all day and night too. Willie and hands planted corn all day. I hoed in NW corner of new garden in morn after getting wood for Mary to wash.
Thu. 25th. We had a big rain from S at daylight in morn and blew from NW at 7 with a big rain and cleared off at 10. Willie found May cow down just after rains and got hands and hauled her home and put her under shed. I set out peas in gaps in home saved peas in morn.
Fri. 26th. Bright, nearly clear, and very cool early in morn but warm in eve from S. Dud and Wiley and Joe broke ground in Coon field today and Willie was there most of day. I scraped Irish potatoes in old garden in morn and was sick most of day but better late in eve. Lucile went to town with Lila in eve to go home.
Sat. 27th. Cloudy and warm from SE. Dud and Wiley and Joe broke ground in Coon field most of morn and Willie there most of morn. I scraped Irish potatoes in old garden in morn. Willie drove Buck to town in eve.
Sun. 28th. Cloudy and sprinkled rain some in morn and bright in eve and warm. All walked to SS in eve but Nellie and me. Luster James came just after dark and brought Lucile and staid all night.
Mon. 29th. Cloudy some but bright and wind cool from NE. Dud and Wiley and Joe broke ground in Coon field today and Willie there most of day. Nellie and Minnie walked to Chambers in eve - Miss Carrie is sick. I scraped Irish potatoes and hoed around fig trees in old garden in morn and finished there.
Tue. 30th. Bright and cool early in morn and warm and cloudy some in eve. Dud and Wiley and Joe broke ground in Coon field today and Willie there most of day. I hoed all of peas in new garden and replanted bought ones in morn and planted some lettuce in eve.
Wed. 31st. Warm and cloudy from S and sprinkled rain some in eve. Dud and Wiley and Joe broke ground in Coon field today. They hauled off the cow (which Willie has had under wagon shed for a week) early in morn and Willie skinned the cow. I cut sticks and stuck peas in morn in new garden.
