MARCH 1914
Sun. Mar. 1st. Bright, nearly clear, and a very cool wind from N all day and calm all night. Nellie and Charles at Wiley's most of day and I walked there and back in eve. Willie and Minnie and children walked to SS in eve.
Mon. 2nd. Bright and very cool early in morn but pleasant after 10 in morn. Willie and Dud cleaned up ground in morn and Dud in eve too. Willie drove Sandy to town in eve. I shucked some bread corn in morn and fixed both of cow pen gates in eve.
Tue. 3rd. Bright in morn and a little frost but cloudy in eve and a damp breeze from SE and rained some late in night. Willie and Dud cleaned up ground today. I set out some winter onions in garden in morn and shucked and shelled some bread corn in eve.
Wed. 4th. Cloudy and wet and dropped and drizzled rain in morn and in eve too. Willie and Dud cleaned up ground today. I put up a frame around the grape vines in garden and patched garden gate in morn and shelled some bread corn in eve.
Thu. 5th. Cloudy and very cool and damp from NW. Willie and Dud cleaned up ground today. I shucked and shelled some bread corn in morn and in eve too. Mrs. James and Robert came in eve and here all night.
Fri. 6th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool from NW. Willie and Dud cleaned up ground today. Mrs. James and Robert left in morn. I hoed up some ground in garden early in morn and shucked and shelled some bread corn in morn and winnowed it in eve (one bbl).
Sat. 7th. Bright and some frost in morn and a cold wind from NW all day. Willie and Dud broke ground in morn and Willie drove the mules to wagon and carried one bbl of corn to mill in town in eve and returned at dusk. I packed hog manure in garden and set out some onion sets in morn and shucked corn and got wood and water and fed in eve. Willie and Marion walked to Dick -----'s in morn.
Sun. 8th. Clear and a hard freeze in morn and wind from NW all morn and warmer in eve. Rena and children here most of day - Wiley went to his Pa's in morn.
Mon. 9th. Clear and very cool early in morn but wind from SW and warmer in eve. Willie and Dud broke ground today. I set out some onion sets in garden in morn and finished them and I shucked and shelled some seed corn in eve. We found Daisie (colt) badly wore out early in morn in field.
Tue. 10th. Bright but some clouds and wind from SW all day. Willie and Dud and Dickie began and planted corn all day. Dud opened ground with Julia (mule) and Frilby and Dickie covered with Sandy and Maud Est to harrow. Willie dropped the corn. They planted the patch E of here in white boat corn by 11 in morn and balance of day in field. I planted some bush beans and tomatoes and onion seed in garden in morn and shucked and shelled some seed corn in eve.
Wed. 11th. Cloudy and no sun and began to rain slowly from SW at daylight in morn and lasted till 2 in eve and changed to NW and a cold wind from there balance of eve and all night. Willie and Dud and Dickie planted corn most of the day as on yesterday and got nearly wet at 11 1/2 in morn. I shucked and shelled seed corn in morn and in eve too.
Thu. 12th. Cloudy and cold from N till 10 1/2 in morn and clear balance of day with a cold N wind. Willie and Dud and Dickie planted corn after 8 in morn. I shucked and shelled seed corn in morn and in eve too.
Fri. 13th. Clear and a white frost and hard freeze in morn but pleasant in sun after 10 in morn. Willie and Dud and Dickie planted corn today. I shucked corn and shelled seed corn in morn and in eve too.
Sat. 14th. Clear and a freeze and frost in morn but calm and pleasant in sun after 10 in morn. Willie and Dud and Dickie planted corn all morn and Willie and Marion drove Sandy to town in eve. I hoed some strawberries and planted some quince seed in garden in morn. Joe Miller came at 4 in eve and here all night.
Sun. 15th. Clear and not quite cold enough to freeze in morn and a pleasant day. Joe Miller left at 2 1/2 in eve and carried old Josie (mare) away. All went to SS in eve but me and Bro Ellis preached there.
Mon. 16th. Clear and very cool early in morn but a pleasant day. Willie and Dud planted a patch of yams on H ridge in morn and broke ground in eve. I picked out the potatoes for planting in morn and hoed some in garden in eve.
Tue. 17th. Bright and pleasant from W. Willie and Dud broke ground today in new Pine hollow. I hoed strawberry middles in garden in morn and drew water all day for horses.
Wed. 18th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool from NE. Willie and Dud broke ground in new Pine hollow today. I hoed strawberry middles in garden in morn and finished last of them and I drew water all day for washing on tomorrow.
Thu. 19th. Cloudy and damp breeze from SW till 1 1/2 in eve and rained little slow showers all eve and wind changed to NW at 6 in eve and blew and rained from there till late in night. Willie and Dud broke ground till late in morn. I hoed peas and potatoes and radishes and lettuce in garden in morn.
Fri. 20th. Cloudy and chilly from NE all day. Willie and Dud broke ground in new Pine hollow and in pocket near there today. I didn't work much in morn on account of cold but drew good deal of water today and fed in eve.
Sat. 21st. Cloudy and chilly from N all day and rained and sleeted and snowed some at 10 1/2 in morn to 1 1/2 in eve and bright balance of eve and clear all night and cold from N. Willie cleaned up ground in morn and Dud broke ground with the mules and Willie drove Sandy to town in eve. I packed 10 turns of manure from wagon shed on 10 middles of strawberries in garden in morn.
Sun. 22nd. Clear and a frost in morn and a cold breeze from N all day. Willie drove Sandy to Dick Chambers and carried Nellie and she stayed there at night. Mrs. Chambers is sick and Willie returned at 10 1/2. Chunk dined here. Willie and children walked to SS in eve and Rev Morrow preached there. I walked to Wiley's and back at 2 to 3 in eve. Jimmy Fugler here late in eve awhile.
Mon. 23rd. Bright, nearly clear, and a frost and freeze in morn but calm and warmer in eve. Willie cleaned up ground and Dud broke ground with the mules. I packed manure from new barn and put on strawberry middles in morn and finished all of them and I shucked corn and got wood and water and fed in eve.
Tue. 24th. A little frost in morn but a breeze from S and cloudy and warmer in eve and sprinkled rain a little at night. Willie cleaned up ground and Dud broke with the mules. I hoed all of strawberry middles in morn.
Wed. 25th. Cloudy and a damp breeze from S all day and sprinkled rain some in morn and in eve too and a thunder cloud came up from S at midnight and we had a good rain and needed too. Willie cleaned up ground and Dud broke ground with the mules. I hoed onions in garden in morn.
Thu. 26th. Cloudy and a damp breeze all day from S and began to rain at 2 1/2 in eve and lasted all eve and night too with some thunder and wind too - a big washing rain in all. Willie and Dud cleaned up ground till 2 1/2 in eve. I patched up fence from garden to cow pen in morn and fed and got wood in rain in eve.
Fri. 27th. We had a big rain at 7 in morn and sprinkled some till 9 1/2 and bright till 5 in eve and rain began again and lasted till in the night. Willie hunted our cattle in Elmwood pasture in eve and Dud cleaned up ground. I found 2 hens' nests in morn in patch E of here.
Sat. 28th. Cloudy and misted rain some till 9 1/2 in morn and bright and pleasant from S balance of day. Dud cleaned up ground in morn and Willie rode Sandy in morn and hunted our cattle and drove up Daisie's heifer with a red heifer calf by 11 1/4 and he drove Sandy to town in eve. I got wood for Leah to wash in morn.
Sun. 29th. Bright but cloudy some and pleasant from S. Wiley and family and Nora and Carrie and Annie Lanehart all dined here and we had my birthday dinner.
Mon. 30th. Bright but cloudy some and warm from S. Willie and Dud worked on ditches in field today. I picked grass out of strawberries in morn and got a sack of pine straw in eve and burned up some lice. Nellie and Lila went to D Chambers in morn and Mrs. Chambers died at 2 1/2 in eve and Nellie returned at dusk and Willie went there after supper and stayed all night.
Tue. 31st. Warm and cloudy from S all morn and bright in eve. Dud broke ground with the mules today. Willie worked on ditches in morn and he and Minnie and Carmel and Marion walked to Mrs. Lizzie burying in eve. I hoed lettuce and radishes in garden and finished picking grass out of strawberries in morn.
