JUNE 1902
Sun. Jun. 1st. Bright and warm till 3 in eve and rained around in thundershowers at 3 to 5 1/2 and we had a hard sprinkle here at 5 3/4 to 6 1/4. Rena and Bernice here most of day. Wiley went to his Pa's in morn. Clara and Effie here most of day and Lewis and all of his family here in eve.
Mon. 2nd. Bright and warm and dry and a ______ but breeze from W of S and no rain in sight today. Henry molded cotton in middle part of Luckett field all day with mule. Willie found old Rose's oldest heifer with a calf (and the calf was in a hole). He and Wiley drove them up and put them in cow pasture early in morn (a red heifer calf) and Willie drove up old Neat's white-legged heifer with a red heifer calf late in eve. Willie chopped biggest weeds and grass out of our sugar cane in morn and I plowed all of our cane and okra and beans in orchard with Joe, today, with ____furrows (first time) and finished late in eve. Nellie at Wiley's all day and returned after sunset.
Tue. 3rd. Bright, and warm and dry, and no rain in sight today but clouds dark and rainy looking late in eve. Willie and Henry and I took our plows to Wiley's early in morn and helped him to plow his corn all day with 4 furrows. Henry plowed mare mule and Willie plowed Goulden and I Joe and Wiley sowed p____ and plowed some (Jack mule). We came home to dinner.
Wed. 4th. Bright and warm and dry till 3 1/2 in eve and we had a hard shower at 4 and much needed. Willie helped Wiley to plow corn till rain in eve and they got soaking wet. Henry molded cotton near branch in Luckett field (in sandy corner) till rain in eve and I harrowed cotton middles there in lower part and in SW corner with Joe, once to row, till 4 in eve and we came home at 4 1/2 soaking wet. Mrs. James and Willie and Mattie and Annabel came early in eve and all here at night but Willie - he went to Lewis. Nellie and Minnie and Aunt Margaret cooked most of day for the school picnic on tomorrow.
Thu. 5th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight today. Henry molded cotton in lower part of Luckett field till 10 in morn and I harrowed cotton middles there in ____ W part of it till 9 1/4 and finished last of cotton middles and I harrowed pea middles on NE corner of Persimmon cut till 10 and came home then. All went to Lewis' but Rena and me at 10 1/2 in morn and there all day at the school picnic and Nellie sent some dinner to Rena and me. I packed and cut up some wood and dug the 10 rows of Irish potatoes in eve. Mrs. James here again at night.
Fri. 6th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight today. Henry molded cotton all day in Luckett field with mule. Willie went over corn most of day with hoe. I harrowed whip pea middles till 10 in morn - some on lower side of Gate cut and some on poor circle of H ridge and some on NE corner of Persimmon cut, twice to row, with Joe and I planted some cucumbers in garden by 11 and I hoed all eve in our potatoe patch on hilltop of Persimmon cut.
Sat. 7th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight today. Henry molded cotton in Luckett field in morn and Willie plowed all of our whip peas (molded them with 2 furrows) with Joe by 10 3/4 in morn. I hoed all morn in our potatoe patch on hilltop of Persimmon cut and I packed and cut up some wood and put some ashes on okra ___ in orchard and drove up cows at 5 in eve and Willie and I milked them before 6 and we made 2 freezers of ice cream late in eve and Willie and I carried 1 to Lewis and family after sunset. Wiley drove Joe to town early in eve and got the ice and Willie rode Goulden to Cohen's early in eve.
Sun. 8th. Bright and warm and dry from NW and no rain in sight. Nellie at Wiley's most of day. I gathered a bucket of plums near our road and carried to Wiley's early in morn. Seymour and all of his family here most of day and Buddy here in eve. Willie drove up Strawberry's heifer with a red heifer calf late in eve.
Mon. 9th. Bright and warm and dry from ____ of a thunder cloud SE _____. Willie plowed Joe all day and barred ____ locust ground and new ground cotton at back of our field and finished there and Henry molded cotton ____ Luckett field with mule and finished last of our cotton. I hoed potatoes on hilltop of Persimmon cut all day.
Tue. 10th. Bright and warm and dry from ___ all day but thundered far off in eve. Willie hilled cotton in locust ground today with hoe and Henry broke out middles in cotton in Luckett field today and I hoed potatoes most of day on hilltop of Persimmon cut getting out grass and hilling them with hoe. Dr. Hunnicutt here a little while late in eve.
Wed. 11th. Bright and warm and dry from N till 2 in eve and a thunder cloud came up then from SE and rained enough here at 3 to 3 1/4 to run on ground and cloudy most of eve, Henry broke out cotton middles in Luckett field with mules in morn and in eve after the shower. Willie hilled cotton in new ground at back of field in morn and I hoed potatoes on hilltop of Persimmon cut all morn till 11 1/4 and I finished patch then. Willie and I picked some blackberries after rain (at 4 to 6) in eve. I had a dull headache all day but it went off late in eve.
Thu. 12th. Bright and warm and dry and no rain in sight today. Henry broke out cotton middles in Luckett field all day with mules and Willie hilled cotton in new ground at back of field most of day and I helped him in eve. I dug our Irish potatoes on hillside in orchard and the onions in garden in morn. Miss Ellen Deloach and Stella came to Wiley's on yesterday morn and left this morn.
Fri. 13th. Bright and warm and very dry and no rain in sight today. Henry broke out middles in cotton in Luckett field with mules today and Willie and I hilled cotton in new ground where Cap's house stood and some on upper side of Luckett field today. Joe Schwartz came at 9 1/2 in morn and Willie paid him $8.15 for Cohen (on Henry).
Sat. 14th. Bright and warm and very dry and no rain in sight today. Henry broke out cotton middles with mules in SW corner of Luckett field till 10 in morn and Willie and I hilled cotton on upper side of Luckett field till 10 in morn. Willie drove Joe to town in eve and got some ice and we had ice cream at dusk and Buddy and Gordon and Tigner and Wiley and Rena and Bernice all here then.
Sun. 15th. Bright and warm and dry and no rain in sight. I walked to Wiley's in morn, after gathering a large bucket of plums near old road, and Wiley and Rena and Bernice came back with me at 9 1/2 in morn and here till late in eve. Willie and Minnie drove Joe to town in morn and heard commencement sermon at College.
Mon. 16th. Bright and very warm and no rain in sight - wind from NW. Henry finished breaking out cotton middles in Luckett field by 8 1/2 ___ of them, all our cotton being plowed ____ and he plowed all of our middles out ____ by late in eve. Willie and I hoed ___ day in main body of Luckett field ____ day and came home at night.
Tue. 17th. Bright and very warm ____ and everything suffering ____. I walked in cow pasture at daylight and got Joe and I took harrow to Wiley's early in morn and he and I harrowed cotton middles for him most of day - twice to row - near creek. Willie and Henry hilled cotton in Luckett field most of day.
Wed. 18th. Clear and dry and warm from W and no rain but thundered far off in E all eve. Willie hilled cotton in Luckett field all morn and Henry sick today and didn't work. I helped Wiley to harrow cotton middles till 10 in morn and we finished all then and I got home by 10 1/2. Willie rode Joe to Clara's in eve. Clara and Effie here in eve. I packed and cut up some wood in eve.
Thu. 19th. Clear and warm and dry most of morn and began to thunder and cloud up from E or NE and we had a slow rain here at 5 1/4 to 7 1/4 in eve - just enough to run on smooth ground. Willie and Minnie and Carmell drove Joe to town in morn and had Carmell's picture taken and Willie got 40 lbs of ice and some other things and they returned at 1. Rena and Bernice here most of day. I hoed over all of cotton by 9 3/4 in morn and I packed and cut up some wood in eve and I drove up cows and Willie and I milked them in rain at 6 in eve. We had ice cream late in eve and all of Clara's folks and Wiley's here then.
Fri. 20th. Bright and warm and dry and no rain but showered around far off late in eve. Willie plowed mule and I Joe and Wiley Goulden and we molded cotton for Wiley till 11 in morn and Henry and I molded there in eve and Willie hilled cotton in Luckett field in eve. We had 2 calves about 2 or 3 weeks old to die today with some disease.
Sat. 21st. Bright and warm most of morn and rained around in thundershowers at 12 to 4 from E or NE but none here. Willie hoed cotton in Luckett field in morn and Henry and I helped Wiley to mold cotton between ditch and creek and we finished there at 11 and I brought my plow home by 11 1/2 and Henry left his there. I packed and cut up some wood and hoed beans and okra in orchard in eve. We had some ice cream late in eve and Wiley and Rena and Bernice and Gordon here then.
Sun. 22nd. Clear and cool and dry from ___ and no appearance of rain today. Willie and Minnie and Nellie and Bernice and Carmell all went to Clara's in morn and returned late in eve. I stayed here most of day, but I dined with Wiley and Rena. B C and Dixie and Ruby and Martin here awhile in eve.
Mon. 23rd. Clear and cool and very dry from NE and no signs of rain. Wiley came for Nellie at daybreak and Willie rode Goulden to town at 7 to 11 in morn for Dr. Magruder and he came on to Wiley's early in morn and Rena and gave birth to a son early in eve. Henry plowed cotton for Wiley with Jack mule today. I stayed about house here most of day and kept Bernice and Carmell with me. Willie rode Goulden to town again late in eve for medicine for Rena and returned after dark. Minnie and Carmell and I and Bernice walked to Wiley's at 5 1/4 to 6 1/4 in eve and I milked all of cows (7) before dark.
Tue. 24th. Bright and cool early in morn but a breeze from S and very warm in eve. Henry plowed cotton for Wiley today and Willie and I hilled cotton most of day in Luckett field on this side of branch, in sandy corner, and got very warm in eve. Nellie at Wiley's.
Wed. 25th. Bright and warm and dry but a breeze from SW all day and some clouds. Willie sick with headache in morn and didn't work. Henry helped Wiley to plow his cotton today and they finished it in eve. I hilled cotton in sandy corner in Luckett field in morn and didn't work in eve. Buddy here in eve. I walked to Wiley's with Minnie and Carmell in eve and I packed up some wood. Nellie still at Wiley's.
Thu. 26th. Bright and warm and dry from W of S and no rain but some clouds. Willie and Henry and I hilled cotton on lower side of Luckett field in morn and we didn't work in eve on account of drought and heat. Wiley drove Joe to town to buggy in morn and I helped him to drive up his blue sow and pigs which had got out of his lot in eve and I packed and cut up some wood in eve.
Fri. 27th. Bright but cloudy and a damp wind from SE all day and we had 2 little sprinkles at 2 to 3 and we had a hard shower at 4 in eve but it only wet ground a little for it was very dry. Willie and Henry and I hilled cotton in SW corner of Luckett field most of morn. I packed and cut up some wood in eve and put up a milk shelf in cow pen late in eve.
Sat. 28th. Warm and cloudy early in morn and a damp S wind and bright and warm and a dry breeze from SW after 10 in morn and no rain today. Willie rode Joe to town in morn and got ____ (1 dozen). Henry and I hauled 2 wagon ____ with mare mule and Jack. Seymour and John Fugler here awhile late in eve. Willie rode Joe to Clara's in eve ____ Bernice was here most of day and Minnie took her home late in eve. Nellie at Wiley's since last Mon.
Sun. 29th. Bright but cloudy some and a damp ___ breeze most of day and rained around in little thunder showers some at 12 to 4 in eve but only dropped here. Willie and Minnie and Carmell drove Joe to buggy to Seymour's in morn and returned late in eve. I walked to Wiley's at 9 1/2 in morn and carried some green apples and I walked back there at 11 3/4 and dined there and came back at 1. Gordon here awhile in eve.
Mon. 30th. Bright and warm and very dry and no rain in sight today. Willie drove Joe to town in morn and had a tooth nerve killed - he has been suffering with tooth ache for several days and nights. Henry and I hilled cotton in SW corner of Luckett field most of morn and we didn't work in eve and Carmell and I walked to Wiley's at 3 to 5 in eve. Willie and I cut some corn stalks (boat corn) on NE corner of Gate cut for cows late in eve.
