JUNE 1901

Sat. June 1st. Cloudy and cool from W of N till 10 in morn and bright and pleasant balance of day and no signs of rain today. Willie and Jim scraped cotton in morn in SW corner and Willie hoed his watermelons toward Luckett field in eve and helped me a little while to cut down locust sprouts in Dewberry cut cotton. I cut sprouts ther most of eve with hoe. Pa walked to Clara's in morn and returned in eve. I drove Joe to cart to Cohen's in morn and got a bbl flour for us and a pair plow shoes and 9 yds of checks and 8 of domestic and 2 pair socks for myself and I got 1/2 bbl flour for Wiley and I carried Wiley's flour on to his house and Bernice came back with me at 11 1/4 and Rena here in eve and Dan and Tigner D here too.

Sun. 2nd. Bright and a little cool early in morn but cloudy some all day and dropped rain at 1 1/2 in eve and some in night. I packed some wood and grabbled some Irish potatoes in orchard and walked to Wiley's at 8 1/2 in morn and took Bernice to creek and she came home with me at 10. Wiley is sick with vomiting and running off today. I took Bernice home at 1 and carried some dinner to Rena and I walked to Lewis' at 3 to 5 1/2 in eve.

Mon. 3rd. Bright and warm and dry from NW and no rain in sight today. I barred off cotton most of day with Joe in 3rd Cane hollow and some in SW corner and some in locust ground and Willie and Jim and Aunt Susan and Rose and Net scraped there all day.

Tue. 4th. Cloudy and warm and calm early in morn and bright at 9 in morn till 1 1/2 in eve and clouded up then from SW and began to thunder and drop rain at 3 and we had a good little shower at 4 1/4 to 6 with some little wind and thunder and much needed too. I walked in cow pasture early in morn and drove up May (the Guernsey cow) with a heifer calf (red with some white spots on it) and from Sims' 3/4 dison bull and I barred off cotton in locust ground and other new ground just beyond it at 6 1/2 in morn till 11 1/4 and again in eve at 2 to 4 and rain ran us home then. Willie and Jim and Aunt Susan and Rose and Net scraped cotton in SW corner till 8 in morn and finished there and they scraped in Luckett field balance of day till 4 in eve and rain stopped them.

Wed. 5th. Dark cloudy all morn and a damp S breeze and began to thunder at 9 1/2 in SW and to rain slowly at 10 and rained hard at 10 1/2 with wind and some thunder and slowly till 12 and bright and warm in eve. I barred off cotton with Joe in new ground at back of field till 10 1/4 and Willie and Jim and Aunt Susan and Rose and Net scraped there (and some in Luckett field) till 10 1/4 and rain stopped us then and they scraped there all eve and I barred off all of our cotton in orchard except the hollow in eve. Mrs. Hughes and Mary James came at 12 3/4 and went to Seymour's at night. I carried 3 peaches to Bernice late in eve.

Thu. 6th. Warm and cloudy early in morn and thundershowers passed around W from S and bright and warm after 10 in morn and only dropped rain here today. Willie and Jim scraped cotton in new ground in back of field part of morn and all eve and I barred cotton there part of morn and finished there at 10 1/4 in morn and I barred off hollow in orchard in eve and finished last of our cotton and I plowed some of sugar cane near cow pen with 4 furrows in eve and got very warm and wet with sweat. Wiley found Muley cow in a hole near creek early in morn and Willie and Jim and I went there and helped Wiley and Doug to get her out but she was hurt so bad that we killed her and Jim and Doug skinned her. Mrs. Hughes here most of morn and she and Mary J went home in eve. Willie and I drove up Kitty with a red bull calf at 9 in morn.

Fri. 7th. Cloudy till 9 1/2 and bright and warm till 2 and cloudy and sultry all eve and thundered and rained around in sight most of eve but none here. Willie and Jim scraped cotton in new ground in back of field till 10 in morn and finished there and Jim scraped in orchard balance of day and Willie hoed his watermelon patch balance of day. I plowed sugar cane in cow pen corner and in NE corner of orchard and sowed cotton seed in water furrows in Irish potatoe patch and dragged plow through twice to water furrow and covered them and finished by 11 in morn and I harrowed cotton middles on H ridge all eve, once to row in potatoe ground on hilltop and twice in balance. Rena and Bernice here most of day and Wiley and Doug dined here too.

Sat. 8th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight today. Willie thinned corn in home field in morn and molded cotton on H ridge with mule in eve. I harrowed cotton middles most of day with Joe on H ridge and in old Cane hollow. Pa walked to Clara's in morn and Joe Miller and Sallie and their 2 children there today and brought Pa home in eve and they went on to Lewis'. Jim scraped cotton in orchard in morn.

Sun. 9th. Bright, and warm, and no rain in sight today. Wiley and Rena and Bernice walked to Clara's in morn and returned late in eve. I packed and cut up some wood and grabbled some Irish potatoes and picked some bush beans in garden in morn and I salted cattle in eve. Joe Miller here awhile in eve on way home from Lewis'.

Mon. 10th. Bright and warm and dry all morn and till 5 in eve and rained near here (N of here from E) at 5 to 6 1/2, but none here. Willie molded cotton on H ridge and in old Cane hollow all day with mule and I harrowed cotton middles most of day with Joe in old Cane hollow and water hole cut and in 2nd Cane hollow - twice to row. Jim scraped cotton in orchard in morn and finished there and last of our cotton and he hilled cotton on hilltop of H ridge in eve.

Tue. 11th. Bright and warm and dry most of day but rained a shower NE of here not far off late in eve, but none here. Willie molded cotton with mule all day in old Cane hollow and in 2nd Cane hollow and Jim hilled cotton on H ridge and I harrowed cotton middles with Joe in 2nd Cane hollow and in SW corner most of day.

Wed. 12th. Bright and warm and dry and no rain in sight today. Willie molded cotton all day with mule in 2nd Cane hollow and in water hole cut and in SW corner and Jim hilled cotton on H ridge today and I harrowed cotton middles with Joe in SW corner and in 3rd Cane hollow most of day and I had burning sensations and felt bad and slept but little at night and sweat all night.

Thu. 13th. Bright and warm and dry and a breeze from N and no signs of rain today. Willie molded cotton all day in SW corner and in 3rd Cane hollow with mule and Jim hilled cotton in old Cane hollow and I harrowed cotton middles in SW corner and 3rd Cane hollow and a little in new ground there all morn and all eve in Luckett field on hilltop.

Fri. 14th. Bright and very dry from N and no signs of rain today. Willie molded cotton in SW corner and in 3rd Cane hollow all day with mule and Jim hilled cotton in old Cane hollow today and finished there. I harrowed cotton middles with Joe most of day and I finished Luckett field by 8 1/2 in morn and little patch of new ground where Cap lived by 3 in eve and harrowed some in new ground at S line by 6 and broke the old clevis on harrow then.

Sat. 15th. Bright and warm and dry till 4 1/2 in eve and cloudy and sultry and thundered far off late in eve. Wiley and Rena and Bernice drove Joe to our old buggy to Jack D's in morn and Wiley and Gussie came back late in eve and stayed at Wiley's at night. Willie molded cotton in 3rd Cane hollow and some in Luckett field in morn with mule and Jim hilled cotton in 2nd Cane hollow in morn. I rode Goulden to Cohen's in morn at 7 1/2 to 11 and carried 5 1/2 doz eggs and got 5 1/2 lbs of lard for them and I got 1 gal coal oil and 10 lbs sugar and some other little things. I picked some dry English peas in garden and hoed part of garden in eve.

Sun. 16th. Bright and warm and very dry from N and no rain in sight today. Wiley went back to his Pa's in morn and he and Rena and Bernice returned late in eve. Gussie and Joe Miller dined here. I grabbled some Irish potatoes in orchard and packed some wood early in morn.

Mon. 17th. Bright and very warm and dry most of day but it thundered and rained around some in eve not very far off, but none here. Willie molded cotton in Luckett field with mule today and Jim hilled cotton in 2nd Cane hollow. I harrowed cotton middles in locust ground and new ground S of it, once to row and finished there by 10 in morn and I harrowed all of cotton middles in orchard, once to row, by 3 3/4 in eve and I hoed part of garden and planted some tomatoe seed and some pepper late in eve.

Tue. 18th. Clear, and cooler today, and a dry N wind, and no signs of rain. Willie molded cotton in Luckett field and in new patch where Cap's house stood with mule today and Jim hilled cotton and I hoed in our potatoe patch in Gate cut all day - they are grassy and vines are long and it is tedious work.

Wed. 19th. Bright, nearly clear, and a very dry breeze from N most of day and no rain in sight. Willie molded cotton in locust ground and new ground S of it most of day with mule and Jim hilled cotton in SW corner and Jim hilled cotton in SW corner and I hoed grass out of our potatoes in Gate cut most of day.

Thu. 20th. Bright, nearly clear, and very dry and no rain in sight but wind from SW and warmer today. Willie molded cotton in locust ground in morn and finished there and he rode Joe to Cohen's in eve and got 1/2 bu meal and some cloth and got Charlie to order a buggy for Nellie. Jim hilled cotton in SW corner today. I hoed grass out of our potatoes in Gate cut in morn and I repaired spring gate in eve. Cousin Mary gave birth to a 7 1/2 mo. boy in eve and Nellie there most of eve and at night. Rena and Bernice here in eve. I had a dull headache in morn but it left me in eve.

Fri. 21st. Bright, and warm and very dry and no rain in sight. Willie molded all of cotton in orchard in morn with mule and finished last of cotton. Jim hilled cotton in SW corner all day and Willie too in eve. I hoed grass out of our potatoes in Gate cut most of day. Nellie came home from Lewis' in morn.

Sat. 22nd. Bright, and warm and very dry, wind from SW and some few clouds but no rain in sight today. Willie hoed his watermelons and Jim hilled cotton in morn and didn't work in eve. I hoed potatoes in Gate cut till 11 in morn and till 3 1/2 in eve and finished them and I carried some plums and 2 figs to Bernice at 4 to 5 and packed and cut up some wood. Seymour dined here today. Wiley drove Joe to old buggy early in morn and carried old Muley's hide to town and sold it, and went on to his Pa's and returned late in eve.

Sun. 23rd. Bright, and warm and dry, till 4 in eve and rained in sight in W and SW of here then, but none here. I grabbled some Irish potatoes and packed some wood early in morn. Buddy here most of day and Wiley and Rena and Bernice too. Aunt Margaret cooked dinner.

Mon. 24th. Bright, and warm and dry till 4 in eve, and rained around in thundershowers at 4 to 6 1/2 (in sight) from SE but none here. Willie and Jim hilled cotton most of day in 3rd Cane hollow. I hoed some okra in hollow in orchard early in morn and I scraped 6 rows of Spanish potatoes at NE corner of Persimmon cut by 10 3/4 and I dug Irish potatoes, with a fork, in orchard most of eve.

Tue. 25th. Bright and warm from S till 11 in morn and a cloud came up from S at 12 and only sprinkled a little here but rained not far W of here and cloudy some all eve. Willie and Jim hilled cotton all day and I finished digging up Irish potatoes by 7 1/2 in morn and hoed all of sugar cane in cow pen corner by 11 1/4 and I hoed sugar cane in NE corner of orchard most of eve. Pa walked to Clara's (with Tigner D) in morn and stayed there all night.

Wed. 26th. Bright, and warm and very dry and no rain near but some far off late in eve. Willie and Jim hilled cotton in new ground at back of our field today. I hoed sugar cane (stubble) in orchard and finished it at 8 1/2 in morn and I hilled cotton in orchard balance of day. Pa came home from Clara's in morn.

Thu. 27th. Bright, and warm and dry from E, all morn and till 2 in eve, and clouded up then and we had a good soaking rain at 3 to 4 1/4 and slowly till 6 with some little wind and thunder and the rain was very much needed for it was very dry. Willie and Jim hilled cotton in new ground in back of field in morn and I hilled in orchard on W side and in hollow there. I set out some tomatoe plants in garden and fixed water gap late in eve. Minnie and baby at Wiley's all day and Nellie there all eve. Gussie and Helen and Viola came to Wiley's in morn.

Fri. 28th. Bright and warm all morn - and cloudy and rained around in thundershowers most of eve and we had a good hard rain at 7 1/2 to 8 1/2 in eve from NE with some wind and thunder. Willie and Jim hilled cotton in new ground at back of field all day. I set out vines in gaps in our potatoe patch in Gate cut most of morn and I packed some wood and cut up and caught 1 doz. young chickens (in stable) and put them in coop to sell.

Sat. 29th. Bright, and warm most of morn and rained around in thundershowers most of eve, and we had a little slow one here late in eve from E. Willie and Jim set out vines in gaps in our potatoe patch in Gate cut all morn and I drove Joe to our old buggy to Cohen's in morn and carried one doz chickens and got 20/c each and got 10 lbs lard and 10 of coffee for them and I got some other little things and got home at 11. Wiley and Rena and Bernice and Helen and Viola and Seymour dined here. Willie and Wiley went to Lewis' in eve and they cut 2 beetrees but got very little honey. I hauled 2 cart loads of wood from beyond Wiley's in eve with Joe. Helen and Viola went back home with Rena in eve.

Sun. 30th. Bright and warm from S and thundershowers passed around some, but no rain here today. Nellie and Rena and Bernice and Helen and Viola went to B C's in morn and Wiley went in eve. Wiley and I drove up his Ellen cow with a red bull calf at 10 in morn and Wiley dined here. I salted cattle in eve and Buddy and Gordon here most of eve.
