JUNE 1897

Tue. June 1st. Bright and warm and dry wind from S and no rain. Willie and I harrowed cotton middles (once to row) and Willie put out cotton seed meal and we plowed cotton with 4 furrows in water hole cut and on W side of Cherry cut all day with Hattie and Joe. Pa finished hilling cotton in orchard at 9 in morn and hilled in Coon field balance of day.

Wed. 2nd. Bright and warm and dry from SW and no signs of rain. Pa hilled cotton in Coon field all day. Willie and I harrowed cotton middles (once to row) and Willie put out "meal" and we plowed cotton with 4 furrows with Hattie and Joe on W side of Cherry cut and on hill side and SE side of old Cane hollow all morn. Abe Cohen dined here and Willie rode Joe to town with him in eve and was examined by Dr. Therrel and had his life insured for $1,000. I harrowed cotton middles with Hattie all eve in old Cane hollow (once to row) and finished that cut late in eve. Mary Miller came here from Seymour's in eve and stayed all night.

Thu. 3rd. Bright and quite warm and dry from SW all day till late in eve and a thunder cloud came up from the N at 7 1/2 at night and we had a little shower then and another hard one at 10 1/2 to 11 at night and wet ground well and was much needed. Pa hilled cotton all day in Coon field and Willie and I plowed cotton all day with 4 furrows with Hattie and Joe in old Cane hollow. Willie put out 3 sacks of cotton seed meal in morn and 2 in eve and finished last of it and we plowed under all put out but a little in short rows in bottom.

Fri. 4th. Bright but cloudy all day from N and cool and no rain -only it dropped little early in morn. Pa and Willie hilled cotton all day in Coon field. I drove Hattie to cart to Cohen's in morn and got 3 bu. shelled corn and 2 of meal and 2 sks. of oats and 5 lbs. coffee on credit and returned at 11 in morn. I plowed cotton all eve in old Cane hollow with Hattie with 4 furrows. Nellie and Dixie washed in morn and scalded and burned up chicken lice in eve.

Sat. 5th. Bright and cool, nearly clear, and pleasant from N and no signs of rain. Pa and Willie hilled cotton in Coon field all morn and I finished plowing cotton in old Cane hollow (first plowing) by 8 1/2 in morn and I harrowed cotton middles in new 2nd Cane hollow balance of day (twice to row) and finished there at 5 1/4 in eve. Willie rode Joe to Clara's in eve and Pa walked there.

Sun. 6th. Clear and cool early in morn but a pleasant and beautiful day. B C came in morn and he and Dixie went in her buggy to Union church and Willie rode Joe and B C and Dixie returned at 2 1/4 in eve and Willie went to Mr. D Chambers to dinner. All of us but Pa walked to Lewis' in eve and Bro. Breland preached there.

Mon. 7th. Bright and pleasant all morn and a thunder cloud came up from NW at 2 and we had a good soaking rain at 2 to 3 1/4 and slowly again at 5 to 6 and wet ground well and was much needed on corn. Pa and Willie hilled cotton in Coon field all morn and didn't work any in eve on account of rain. I plowed cotton with Hattie all morn in new 2nd Cane hollow (first plowing) and I set out slips on H ridge at 3 1/4 to 5 1/2 in eve and got nearly wet in rain and ground was very wet and soft too.

Tue. 8th. Clear and pleasant from N in eve - some clouds all morn but bright. Willie hilled cotton most of day in Coon field and Pa hilled there all morn and he hilled on NE corner of H ridge all eve. I set out slips and hoed and picked grass out of planted potatoes on hilltop of H ridge all day. B C and Dixie went in her buggy and Willie rode Joe to town late in eve to Exercises at College.

Wed. 9th. Bright, pleasant in morn, but warm and some clouds in eve. Willie hilled cotton all day in Coon field and Pa on H ridge. I hoed and picked grass out of planted potatoes and stretched vines in gaps on H ridge (hilltop) all day and finished them late in eve. I arose with a headache and had it bad all day and I took 4 Pierce's pills through the day and they worked me late in eve and headache got better but I had it all night but slept well.

Thu. 10th. Bright and warm all day and thundered and showered in SE not far off at 3 to 6 in eve but none here. Willie hilled cotton in Coon field and Pa on H ridge all day and I plowed cotton in new 2nd Cane hollow all day with Hattie (first time). I took 2 more pills when I arose in morn and my headache got better after breakfast and left me at noon. The pills that I took on yesterday and this morning worked me well all day. Rena and little Jessie Kendricks came in morn and Nellie went home with Rena in eve.

Fri. 11th. Bright and quite warm and no rain. Willie hilled cotton all day in Coon field and Pa on H ridge and I plowed cotton all day in new 2nd Cane hollow (first time) and finished there late in eve and last of our cotton all being plowed over first time. Dixie and Aunt Margaret washed all morn.

Sat. 12th. Bright and quite warm and getting a little dry but thundered around far off in eve. Willie hilled cotton in Coon field and Pa on H ridge in morn and I dug Irish potatoes in old cow pen corner and hilled cotton planted there in water furrows in morn. Willie rode Joe to Pinson place late in eve. I rode Hattie to town in eve at 2 to 5 3/4 and saw Dr. Therrel about Ronaldson and insurance business. Maxie Fugler here in eve and at night.

Sun. 13th. Bright and warm most of day but cloudy some in eve and thundered around not very far off and showered too but none here. I rode Hattie in cow pasture and salted cattle and on over Coon field to see cotton early in morn and I gathered a bucket of plums on H ridge. Cousin Sallie and baby and Joe here all day and Maxie F here all day and at night again. Willie returned from Pinson place at dark.

Mon. 14th. Bright and warm most of day but cloudy some and thundered and showered around not very far off most of eve but none here. Willie hilled cotton in Coon field and Pa on SE part of H ridge all day. I dug Irish potatoes and hoed cotton too in old cow pen corner all day and finished them late in eve. Maxie F here again late in eve and all night.

Tue. 15th. Cloudy and warm from SW and rained a hard little shower at 5 in morn and another at 8 and another at 11 1/4 and we had a heavy one late in eve at 6 and slowly till 9 at night. Joe Miller and Ray and his 4 women came early in morn and they and Willie hilled cotton all day in Cherry cut. I ran harrow with Hattie twice between rows ahead of them all day but couldn't quite keep ahead of them and they hoed some little without harrowing. We finished all of Cherry cut except part of fence row cut and we finished water hole cut too. The rain stopped us at 11 and again at 5 1/2 in eve. All dined here. Maxie F here all day and at night too. Pa finished hilling cotton on H ridge and re-hilled some in hollow in orchard.

Wed. 16th. Bright and warm but a pleasant S of W breeze all morn and till 3 in eve and a cloud came up at 3 1/4 from S of W and rained a little shower then and thundered and rained S and E of here till 6 in eve. Willie hilled cotton in Coon field all day and Pa hoed all of sugar cane in NE corner of orchard. I set out slips in gaps in potatoe patch on hilltop of H ridge in morn and Buddy sent Gordon and Andrew and got 2 sks of vines "yams" for we have no other kind and I cut and gave away 4 more sks. (2 in morn and 2 in eve) to Negroes. I hilled potatoes in short rows on hilltop there all eve with my hoe.

Thu. 17th. Bright and warm from W of S and showered around a little in eve and thundered far off all eve but no rain here. Pa hoed all day in orchard cutting grass and weeds out of his cotton (it has been hilled before). Joe Miller and Ray and his 4 women came early in morn and Willie hoed with them and they finished hilling fence row cut and all of old Cane hollow cut of cotton and hilled little in Coon field late in eve. All dined here and Cousin Sallie and baby too. I harrowed all of old Cane hollow cut of cotton ahead of hoes with Hattie running twice between rows all day and finished at 5 1/2 in eve and Hattie was very warm and blew hard at 11 3/4 in morn when I quit and again in eve too.

Fri. 18th. Bright and quite warm from S of W and no rain. Willie hilled cotton in Coon field all day and Pa hoed cotton in orchard all day. I hilled potatoes with hoe all morn on hilltop of H ridge and I drove Hattie to cart to Cohen's in eve and got 3 bu. corn and 2 of meal and 1 sk of oats and 1/2 bu salt all on credit and returned 1 hour by sun.

Sat. 19th. Bright and warm and dry from NW and no signs of rain. Willie hilled cotton in Coon field all morn and I hilled potatoes with hoe on hilltop of H ridge till 11 in morn and finished all of planted part of patch there. Pa has diarrhea and didn't work. Nellie came home from Pinson place in morn (she has been there more than a week). She drove Rachael to Dixie's buggy and brought Miss Eula Kendricks home with her. I drove Hattie to Dixie's buggy to town in eve and carried Gordon to Rothschild's and got him a suit of clothes, hat and shoes, which his grandpa gave him and got home at 6 1/4 in eve.

Sun. 20th. Bright, nearly clear, and dry and quite warm from W of N. I rode Hattie in cow pasture and Coon field early in morn and I rode her to Clara's in eve. Willie drove Joe to Dixie's buggy and led old Rachael and carried Miss Eula Kendrick home in eve. He returned in night. Pa seems to be better of his diarrhea today.

Mon. 21st. Bright and dry from N and very warm all day and at night too. Pa hilled cotton in new 2nd Cane hollow awhile in morn and again late in eve (he still has diarrhea some). Willie hilled cotton in Coon field all day. I plowed all of sugar cane (in NE corner of orchard) and some cotton there with 4 and sometimes 6 furrows (2nd and last plowing) in morn till 11 and I plowed slips on hilltop of H ridge with 4 furrows at 1 3/4 to 3 in eve and I plowed cotton there balance of eve with 4 furrows and sometimes 6 (2nd and last plowing) and old Hattie breathed very hard and fast all day.

Tue. 22nd. Bright, nearly clear, and very warm all day and night too and dry. It thundered all eve and till in night in S and E and rain clouds in sight. Pa hilled cotton in 2nd new Cane hollow all day and Willie in Coon field. I plowed cotton all morn till 11 in orchard and I plowed cotton on H ridge most of eve with Hattie all day and she breathed very fast and hard and didn't eat her dinner. Willie rode her and went with Seymour to Slippery Elm tree to get bark for Luella at 1 1/4 to 2 1/4.

Wed. 23rd. Bright but some clouds and quite warm but a breeze most of day from SW and getting too dry. Pa hilled cotton in new 2nd Cane hollow most of day and Willie hilled in Coon field all day and finished there late in eve. I plowed cotton till 10 3/4 in morn on W side of orchard and finished all but little by bars (short rows) and I plowed cotton most of eve on H ridge with Hattie all day and she breathed very fast and hard. Dixie walked to Seymour's late in eve and rode old Flirt back to drive to Pinson place on tomorrow.

Thu. 24th. Bright and warm all morn and thunder clouds passed around near at 12 to 2 from SW but only sprinkled here at 1 3/4 and cloudy all eve and rained toward SW most of eve. Pa and Willie hilled cotton in new 2nd Cane hollow most of day. I plowed cotton most of day with Hattie. I finished orchard early in morn and I plowed balance of day on SE circle of H ridge and finished there at 5 1/2 in eve. Dixie and Clara drove old Flirt to Pinson place early in morn and returned before sunset.

Fri. 25th. Bright and quite warm and dry all morn and hazy and cloudy and sultry and thundered around all eve but no rain. Pa and Willie hilled cotton all day in new 2nd Cane hollow. I drove Hattie out to Nugent place early in morn and got some palmetto for Clarissa and came back by Cohen's and got a sk of oats and some meat and 5 lbs. coffee and a gal jug (for water jug) on credit and I got home at 5 in eve and carried the palmetto to Clarissa at Harrison's old home. I had a dull headache all day and took 4 Pierce's pills through the day and headache left me at dusk.

Sat. 26th. Bright and quite warm and dry most of day but thundershowers passed around some in eve and rained a slow shower here after night. Pa and Willie hilled cotton in new 2nd Cane hollow till 9 in morn and finished all except a few short rows (taken in this year). I plowed cotton till 11 in morn on upper side of Cherry cut with Hattie and I cut an oak out of road in back of calf pasture and hauled a cartload of oak wood from there and cut up good deal of wood in eve. Willie and Dixie drove Joe to town at 2 to 5 1/2 in eve.

Sun. 27th. Bright and quite warm and dry and no rain but thundered around far off most of day and lightninged in N at night. I walked to Sims' early in morn and got 25cts. of sugar from Clara for Nellie and cut some boat corn (the first) on roadside by H ridge for the hogs at 9 in morn and I found a large brown hen in back of cow pasture with 9 young chickens and drove them home and put them in the feed coop and I found a brown pullet E of fig orchard with 8 young chickens and fed them in morn and in eve too. Wiley came in morn and he and Rena went home late in eve. All of us but Pa and Nellie walked to Lewis' to preaching in eve and Bro. Breland came here and stayed all night with us.

Mon. 28th. Bright and quite warm and dry and no rain. Willie plowed Joe and I Hattie most of day laying by cotton in Coon field. Pa hoed some rough rows of cotton in new 2nd Cane hollow in morn and he hoed cotton in Irish potatoe ground in old cow pen corner in eve. Bro. Breland and wife left early in morn.

Tue. 29th. Bright and quite warm and dry and no rain but thundered far off in eve and showered little not very far off. Pa hoed cotton in orchard in hollow in morn and he hoed in old Cane bottom in field in eve. Willie and I plowed cotton in Coon field all day. Willie plowed Joe in morn and got his hind foot hooked on single tree and lamed him and Willie plowed Dick all eve - the first time he has been used since he ran away with plow just one month ago on yesterday.

Wed. 30th. Bright and quite warm and dry till 5 in eve and a thunder cloud came up then from NE and rained just enough here to lay dust well and creek was up after rain. Pa hoed cotton in old Cane hollow till 4 3/4 in eve and Willie plowed Dick and I Hattie in Coon field all morn and till 4 3/4 in eve and rain ran us home then at 5. We are plowing cotton in Coon field (2nd and last time) with 4 furrows and sometimes 5 and 6.
