JULY 1919
Tue. July 1st. We had a big soaking rain at 3 to 7 in morn and cloudy some balance of day. I hoed around 6 fig trees and 2 pecan trees at 10 to 12 in morn. No one worked today on account of too wet.
Wed. 2nd. Bright, nearly clear, and no rain in sight today. Dud and Wiley hoed cotton. Willie and Marion hoed slips out E of here today. I dug Irish potatoes in old garden in morn.
Thu. 3rd. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. Willie and Marion hoed slips in patch E of here in morn and finished them and plowed corn on creek in eve. Dud and Wiley ran cultivators in cotton today. I hoed in tomatoe patch in field in morn.
Fri. 4th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. Willie and Marion plowed corn all day on creek and finished there late in eve. Dud and Wiley plowed cotton all day in home field. I finished hoeing tomatoes and hoed watermelons on ditch in morn.
Sat. 5th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. Dud and Wiley plowed cotton all day. Minnie and Carmel drove Buck to Mrs. James' in morn. Willie ran cultivator in field in morn and in slips in patch N of here and rode him to town in eve. I hoed in new garden on E side in morn.
Sun. 6th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. Willie and I walked in field on creek in morn. Bro Tom and 2 little girls here today. Minnie and Carmel returned from Mrs. James' at dark.
Mon. 7th. Bright and very warm and no rain but a thunder cloud came up near from E of N after dark. Dud and Wiley plowed cotton today. Marion ran cultivator in cotton today. Willie ran cultivator in slips in patch N of here. I hoed in new garden in morn.
Tue. 8th. Bright and very warm till late in eve and a thunder cloud came up then from N and we had a good little shower at dark and needed too. Dud and Wiley plowed cotton today. Willie and Marion ran cultivators in cotton today. I hoed on W side of new garden in morn.
Wed. 9th. Bright and warm and no rain but a thunder cloud came up very near from NW at dark. Dud and Wiley plowed cotton today. Willie and Marion ran cultivators in cotton in morn and didn't work in eve - they repaired well curbing. I hoed in new garden in morn.
Thu. 10th. Bright and very warm most of day and a thunder cloud came from NW late in eve but only dropped here. Willie and Dud and Wiley planted peas today in Gate cut. I hoed in new garden in morn.
Fri. 11th. A thunder cloud out NE of here and very near from 3 in morn till 8 and we had a slow and soaking rain all that time and needed too and bright after 9 in morn. Willie and Dud and Wiley planted peas in Gate cut after 9 in morn. I shelled some seed peas in morn.
Sat. 12th. Bright and warm and no rain today. Willie and Dud and Wiley planted peas in Gate cut in morn and finished there. Marion sowed some peas in patch N of here in morn and he and Willie drove Buck to town in eve and Dud and Wiley carried 2 bbls of shelled corn to town to mill in eve. I dug last of Irish potatoes in old garden in morn.
Sun. 13th. Bright and very warm and no rain. Robert James and wife and Willie James and Katie and Ruby Ogden came in an auto in morn and left late in eve.
Mon. 14th. Bright and very warm and no rain here but a thunder cloud passed around SE of here from E in eve. Willie plowed cane in field and slips out E of here today with Buck. Dud and Wiley ran cultivators in cotton middles today. I hoed over my tomatoe and watermelon patches in morn.
Tue. 15th. Bright and very warm and no rain near today. Marion drove Buck to town in morn and carried Nellie and Charles to go to Wiley's and Nellie and Jack met them in town. Willie plowed cane in patch N of here in morn and he and Marion hoed potatoes there in eve. Dud and Wiley ran cultivators in cotton today. I got some wire in patch NE of here and put up an arbor for late beans in new garden in morn.
Wed. 16th. Cloudy early in morn and a thunder cloud came up from N at 9 in morn and rained here till 11 1/2 - a good rain and needed too - and bright in eve. Dud and Wiley ran cultivators in cotton till 9 in morn and did nothing in eve. I tied up old pea sticks to wire on pole bean arbors in new garden till 9 in morn and rain stopped me and I finished it in eve and replanted beans there.
Thu. 17th. Bright and very warm and no rain. Willie and Marion and Dud and Wiley dug Irish potatoes in hollow E of here in morn and Dud and Wiley ran cultivators in cotton in eve. I saved some squash and cucumber and butter bean seed in morn. Luster James sent a wagon for potatoe vines today. Willie and Minnie drove Buck to town to preaching at Methodist church at night.
Fri. 18th. Bright and warm in morn and a thunder cloud passed around S from SW in eve but only sprinkled a little here. I hoed in new garden in morn. Dud and Wiley ran cultivators in cotton. Robert James and wife and mother and Mattie and Robert's children came in an auto in eve and ate watermelons and left on account of cloud.
Sat. 19th. Cloudy most of day but only sprinkled rain a little in eve. Carmel and I drove Buck to Wiley's in morn.
Sun. 20th. Bright in morn and very warm and cloudy in eve and began to rain slowly at 4 in eve and got harder and we had a big washing rain at 6 1/2 without wind but far off thunder. Carmel and I returned from Wiley's at 11 in morn. Lanehart and family stopped here out of rain on way to SS in eve.
Mon. 21st. Bright in morn and cloudy all eve and began to rain slowly early in eve and lasted till in night. I saved some cucumber seed in morn. Willie drove Bick to town in morn and returned at 1 in eve. Chunk came in eve and here till after supper.
Tue. 22nd. Cloudy some all day and rained good deal at 4 to 5 1/2 in eve. Willie cut bushes on road in field in morn. Dud and Wiley and hands cut down weeds on ditches in field today.
Wed. 23rd. Bright in morn and till 3 in eve and rained in thunder showers at 4 to 6 1/4. I didn't work on account of wet. Willie cut bushes on road in morn.
Thu. 24th. Bright and very warm till 4 in eve and a thunder cloud came up from S of E then and rained good deal till 5 1/2. Willie cut bushes on road in morn and eve too till rain. I brought some tomatoes from field in morn.
Fri. 25th. Bright and very warm till 3 in eve and rained some here then and another shower at dark. Willie cut bushes on road in morn. I packed all of squashes and cucumbers out of new garden and hoed up some of ground for late Irish potatoes in morn.
Sat. 26th. Cloudy and rained some at 11 in morn and bright part of eve and clear all night. Willie drove Buck to town in morn and brought Nellie and Charles home form Wileys' at 1 1/2 - they have been at Wiley's nearly 2 weeks. I hoed ground in new garden where squashes and cucumbers grew in morn.
Sun. 27th. Bright in morn and a thunder cloud came up from SE at 2 in eve and we had a big washing rain, which only lasted a few minutes. All home all day.
Mon. 28th. Bright and warm all day and no rain but thunder clouds in sight in eve. Willie drove Buck to town in morn and returned at 3 in eve. I hoed around 7 bought pecan trees in morn.
Tue. 29th. Bright in morn and a thunder cloud came up from SE at 4 in eve and we had a shower here till 5. I dug up onion ground on W side of new garden in morn to plant in late Irish potatoes. Willie James came late in eve for Mattie and stayed all night.
Wed. 30th. Bright, very warm, and no rain. I planted some Irish potatoes on W side of new garden in morn and Willie helped me some.
Thu. 31st. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. Wiley and Billy Lawrence came at daylight and Willie helped them to drive some of Wiley's cattle up the creek and Willie rode Sandy to town to a big barbecue and Marion and Minnie and Carmel drove Buck to barbecue and all returned after sunset. I hoed up potatoe bed and hoed grass out of strawberries in garden by 10 in morn and Charles and Carl and I went to tomatoe patch and I gave a watermelon to Wiley Woods and one to Dud and we brought a large one home.
