JULY 1918
Mon. July 1st. Bright and very warm and dry and no rain in sight. Dud and Bunges ran harrows in cotton. I picked some dry beans in new garden and shelled some in morn.
Tue. 2nd. Bright and cool early in morn but very warm and dry after 10 in morn and no rain in sight. Dud and Bunges ran harrows in cotton. I helped Willie and Marion gather figs to preserve early in morn and shelled some dry beans in barn balance of morn.
Wed. 3rd. Bright and cool early in morn and very warm and dry in eve. Dud and Bunges ran harrows in cotton in morn and finished. Willie rode Buck to Bro Tom's in eve. I shelled bush beans in barn in morn and finished them.
Thu. 4th. Bright and warm and very dry. I shelled some peas in barn in morn. No one working today.
Fri. 5th. Bright and very warm and dry and no rain in sight. Willie rode Daisie and Marion rode Maud Est to Dr. Hewes in morn and Maud Est took his Jack and they returned late in eve. I shelled some dry peas in morn and finished them. I helped Buddy to gather some figs to preserve early in morn.
Sat. 6th. Bright and very warm and dry and no rain in sight. I picked and shelled some dry beans and sowed some yellow tomatoe seed in morn. Willie drove Buck to town in morn and returned at 3 in eve.
Sun. 7th. Bright and very warm and dry and no rain in sight. Louis Miller and family came in an auto and spent day and left Marie to stay a week. Gordon here too.
Mon. 8th. Bright and very warm and dry and a little shower passed around SE from E in eve but no rain here. Dud and Bunges ran harrows in cotton in eve. I ridged up some ground in old garden for late Irish potatoes in morn.
Tue. 9th. Bright and very warm and dry and no rain in sight. Dud and Bunges ran harrows in cotton. I ridged up ground for Irish potatoes in old garden in morn. Willie patched up wagon in eve. Marion and Carmel and Marie Miller drove Buck to D Chambers in eve.
Wed. 10th. Bright and very warm and very dry and no rain in sight. Bunges drove our wagon and carried a load of Wiley's things out to his new home in morn and returned late in eve. I ridged ground in old garden for late Irish potatoes in morn. Ruby and Janie Chambers here today and Nora and Clarence ate supper here.
Thu. 11th. Cloudy some all day and very dry and warm but thundered far off most of day. Our wagon carried another load of Wiley's things and his wagon another load and all of family went to their new home today. I ridged ground for Irish potatoes in old garden in morn.
Fri. 12th. Cloudy and we had a little shower here from NW - enough to lay dust - but all dried before night. Bunges drove wagon and Willie and Wiley went in buggy to Wiley's new home in morn and returned at dark. I hoed and thinned late beans in new garden and saved some squash seed in morn.
Sat. 13th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. Carmel and Marie drove Buck to town in morn and returned at 11. I cut up good deal of stove wood and hunted hens' nests in morn. Nellie and Minnie cooked cakes for a dinner to be at old Chapel (tomorrow) in eve.
Sun. 14th. Bright and warm and very dry and no rain in sight. Willie and Marion drove Buck to buggy and Louis Miller came in an auto and brought Bernice and Buddy and they and Carmel and Marie all went to old Chapel and had a picnic there and Carmel went home with Louis and Marie in eve. Nellie at Lanehart's most of day.
Mon. 15th. Bright and warm and very dry and no rain in sight. Bunges ran cultivator in slip patch E of here and plowed it out today. Willie hoed some in cotton today. Minnie and Marion and Carl drove Buck to Mrs. James' in eve. I picked some dry butter beans in morn and winnowed some peas and beans - about (1 1/2 bu) in morn.
Tue. 16th. Bright and very warm and dry and no rain in sight. Dud and Bunges ran harrows in cotton today. Willie hoed in cotton. I picked some butter beans early in morn for dinner. Wiley dined here today. Nellie went in an auto with Nora L to Norwood late in eve and returned at midnight.
Wed. 17th. Bright and very warm and dry and no rain in sight. Dud and Bunges hauled all of manure from cow pen and put it on old Irish potatoe ground in patch N of here in morn and Bunges rebedded the ground in eve. Willie hoed some in cotton today. I picked some butter beans for dinner early in morn and drew water for washing. Minnie and Marion and Carl returned from Mrs. James' late in eve.
Thu. 18th. Bright and very warm and dry all day and a thunder cloud came up from N at 8 1/2 at night and we had a pretty good shower which wet ground some for it was very dry. Willie rode Daisie to Dr. Hewes in morn and she took his Jack first time and he returned at 12. Bunges hauled a load of corn for Wiley and he hauled another load and sold to Conger in morn. I brought some Beauty tomatoes from field in morn and saved the seed.
Fri. 19th. Cloudy most of day and rained a hard sprinkle at 12 and bright some in eve. Dud and Bunges cut down thicket out NE from privy today. I hoed Beauty tomatoes in field early in morn and replanted beans in new garden.
Sat. 20th. Bright and warm most of day and thunder clouds in sight E and SE most of eve but none here. Dud and Bunges cut down thicket where they cut on yesterday in morn and finished it. Marion and Charles drove Buck to Wiley's in morn and Wiley carried a load of corn and chickens there in morn. I hoed around little pear and fig trees out E of here early in morn.
Sun. 21st. Bright and very warm till 3 in eve and a thunder cloud passed around S from SE and we had a pretty good shower here which wet ground some for it was very dry. Carmel and Marion and Charles returned from Wiley's at dark.
Mon. 22nd. Bright and warm till 12 and a thunder cloud came up from SW then and rained a little slow rain till 2 and bright late in eve. Dud and Bunges cut down briars in hollow in NE corner of patch N of here today. Willie and Marion cleaned out some ditches in field today. I planted Irish potatoes in old garden in morn.
Tue. 23rd. Bright and very warm and no rain in sight today. Dud and Bunges cut down briars and bushes in cow pasture today. I planted Irish potatoes in old garden in morn. Mrs. James and Mattie and little Mildred came at 11 1/2 in morn.
Wed. 24th. Clear and very warm and no rain in sight. Willie and Marion and Dud and Bunges planted Irish potatoes in Wiley's field today and finished them late in eve. I planted Irish potatoes in old garden in morn. Mrs. James and little Mildred left in morn and Mattie stayed.
Thu. 25th. Bright and very warm and dry till 3 1/2 in eve and a thunder cloud came up then from E and we had a little shower till 4 1/2 which wet ground a little for it was very dry. Willie and Marion and Dud and Bunges planted some Irish potatoes in field in morn and Dud and Bunges cut briars and bushes in cow pasture balance of day. I planted Irish potatoes in old garden in morn and brought some tomatoes from field.
Fri. 26th. Bright and warm till 3 in eve and thunder clouds came up then from E and we had a little shower then till 4. Dud and Bunges cut briars and bushes in cow pasture today. Willie and Marion worked on cow pen fence to keep pigs out in morn. Wiley ate dinner and supper here today. I planted Irish potatoes in old garden in morn and finished them. I am nearly sick with a cold and have been for 5 days.
Sat. 27th. Bright and warm till 3 1/2 in eve and rained around in thunder showers balance of eve from N of E and a cloud came up from there at dusk and we had a good rain - the most we've had for a long time. Dud and Bunges cut briars in cow pasture in morn. Willie drove Buck to town in morn and returned at 12 with meal. I hoed cucumbers and late beans on W side of new garden in morn.
Sun. 28th. Cloudy all day and thundered some N of here late in eve but none here. Willie and Minnie and children went to SS in eve. I was sick and slept but little at night and had a pain and soreness in my right side.
Mon. 29th. Bright till 3 in eve and warm and rained around in thunder showers at 3 to 4 from NE but only sprinkled a little here. Willie and Marion drove up 2 cows which have been getting in Wiley's field in morn and put yokes on them in eve. I picked some dry butter beans in morn early. Rubie C here today.
Tue. 30th. Bright and warm till 3 in eve and a big rain passed around E and SE of here from NE and we got a big soaking rain - the first good rain that we've had for a long time - and quit raining at 4. Willie worked on old wagon in morn and he and Marion set out slips in patch N of here late in eve.
Wed. 31st. Bright and warm till 2 in eve and rained around most of eve and rained a little here late in eve. Willie and Marion set out slips in patch N of here in morn and I helped them and we finished that patch and set out gaps in patch E of here till 11 and Marion finished that patch in eve. Willie and Minnie drove Buck to town in eve.
