JULY 1915
Thu. Jul. 1st. Bright and warm and dry and no rain near today. It thundered far off in night. Dud cut burrs in corn today and Willie too in morn and Willie rode Sandy in eve to see Shorter land. I hoed tomatoes and pepper in field in morn and finished there and I went to creek with the boys in eve.
Fri. 2nd. Bright most of morn and a thunder cloud came up from SW at 2 in eve and we had a little shower then and cloudy some all eve and we had a good rain late in night and just before daylight -enough to wet ground well and needed too. Willie and Dud cut burrs in corn most of day. I hoed beans and tomatoes in garden in morn and got wood and water and fed in eve.
Sat. 3rd. We had a good rain last night and early this morn and cloudy all morn from SW and began to rain in little showers at 10 1/2 in morn and set in to raining steadily at 11 1/2 and lasted all eve and a good soaking rain and needed too. Willie and Marion and Dud and I set out slips in Cherry cut in morn and all got wet but me. We fed and got wood and milked in a slow rain in eve.
Sun. 4th. It rained slowly most of morn till 10 and quit and a thunder cloud blew up from S of W at 11 3/4 and rained good deal till 3 in eve and quit and began again at 8 in eve and lasted till after 10 - a big rain. All of us in house all day. Willie James came at 7 3/4 in eve (for Mattie).
Mon. 5th. Cloudy and misted rain till 9 in morn and bright and pleasant from NW balance of day. Willie and Mattie James left in morn and Willie drove Sandy to town and returned at 1 in eve. Marion and Dud and I set out slips on hilltop of Cherry cut in morn and they and Willie set out in eve and finished. I brought in some okra and cucumbers in eve and shucked corn and got wood and water and fed too.
Tue. 6th. Bright and warm and no rain today. Willie and Dud hoed and planted potatoes on hilltop of Cherry cut today. Lyn Ferguson got some vines here in morn. I thinned beans in garden early in morn and cut up good deal of wood and set 2 hens in eve.
Wed. 7th. Bright, and warm most of day, but a cloud came up from W at 2 1/2 in eve and we had a little shower at 3 1/4 and bright balance of eve. Dud scraped planted potatoes on hilltop of Cherry cut today. Willie rode Maud Est to Ogden's early in morn and she refused 2nd time and he rode Sandy in eve to hunt Rose's yearling but didn't find it. I hoed okra in NE corner of patch E of here and some young peach trees in morn and brought cucumbers from field and went to creek with the boys at mouth of Walker branch late in eve.
Thu. 8th. Bright and warm from NW and no rain in sight. Dud scraped potatoes today. Willie rode Sandy up the creek and found Rose's yearling and drove it back down the creek and he pulled 2 fine watermelons (our first). I hoed part of bean patch on hilltop of H ridge in morn. Nellie and Bernice and little Nellie drove Hal to Bro Tom's in morn and returned late in eve. Mrs. Katie Ogden and Myrtis here in eve.
Fri. 9th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. Willie cut burrs in corn and Dud plowed some potatoes today. I hoed balance of bean patch on H ridge and 4 peach trees in patch E of here and some late beans in garden by 10 in morn and I went to the creek with the boys in eve.
Sat. 10th. Bright and warm and no rain here but a thunder cloud passed around S of here from W at 2 in eve. Dud scraped slips on hilltop of Cherry cut in morn. Willie and Marion and Charles drove Sandy to town in morn and returned at 11 1/2. I hoed beans and tomatoes in garden in morn.
Sun. 11th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight but thundered far off most of eve. All of us home. Ben Ford and wife and little Rupert here most of day. Carmel and Marion went to SS in eve.
Mon. 12th. Bright and warm and no rain here but a thunder cloud passed around S from SW in eve. Willie cut burrs in corn today and Dud scraped slips in Cherry cut (on hilltop). I hoed pepper and tomatoes in field in morn and burned lice out of nests of 7 setting hens in eve.
Tue. 13th. Bright and warm and no rain here but a thunder cloud passed around S from SW in eve. Willie cut burrs in corn and Dud plowed slips in Cherry cut today. I hoed and finished tomatoes in field in morn. Prof Griffin dined here today. I shelled some bread corn in eve.
Wed. 14th. Bright and very warm and no rain but a thunder cloud in sight in SW in eve. Willie cut burrs in corn and Dud ran cultivator in whip peas in oat patch N of here today and some in field too. I hoed some in garden in morn and brought in some cucumbers and tomatoes and one canteloupe from field by 10 and shelled some bread corn in eve and set 2 hens.
Thu. 15th. Bright and very warm and no rain near. Willie made 4 ax handles today. Dud finished running cultivator in whip peas and cane in morn and cut down briars and bushes in calf pasture in eve. I pulled grass and weeds out of strawberries in morn and shelled some bread corn in eve. Miss Mittie Fugler came at 1 1/2 in eve and stayed all night.
Fri. 16th. Bright and very warm and dry and no rain in sight. Willie cut weeds out W of flower yard and Dud cut bushes in calf pasture today. I pulled weeds and grass out of strawberries in morn and brought in a canteloupe and some tomatoes and cucumbers from field in morn and shelled some bread corn in eve. Miss Mittie Fugler dined at Lewis' and left here late in eve.
Sat. 17th. Bright and very warm and dry and no rain in sight. Willie rode Sandy to town and Dud drove the mules to wagon and they returned at 12 1/4 with meal and flour. I got some pine straw in pasture and burned lice and reset 6 hens in morn and brought a big watermelon from field too in morn.
Sun. 18th. Bright and very warm and dry and no rain in sight. I walked to Wiley's and back in morn. All except Carl and me went to SS in eve and Bro Ellis preached there. Lila and Earl and Bernice ate supper here and left at 10.
Mon. 19th. Bright and very warm and dry and no rain near. Willie and Dud drove our cattle from Elmwood around on creek and left them in morn and Dud cut bushes and briars in calf pasture in eve. I gathered figs for Minnie to preserve early in morn and gathered some for Mrs. Lanehart too and Marion helped Clarence to carry them home.
Tue. 20th. A thunder cloud came up from N at 6 1/2 in morn but only rained a little slow one here and bright after 9 in morn and a little cooler. Dud cut bushes in calf pasture today. Misses Lottie and Mamie Kaigler here most of day. I brought in some cucumbers for seed and some tomatoes from field in morn.
Wed. 21st. Bright and cool from E of N and no rain in sight. Miss Mittie came here at dusk on yesterday eve and canned figs and some vegetables all today. Willie and I gathered figs early in morn and got some tomatoes and beans in eve. Mrs. Lanehart here in morn and Cousin Mary and Lila and Rena here in eve.
Thu. 22nd. Bright, nearly clear, and no rain in sight and cool from E of N. Willie and Minnie drove Sandy to town in morn and heard Bilbo speak and Wiley took Carmel too and all returned in eve. Dud cut briars and bushes in calf pasture today. I cut up wood early in morn and gathered some figs for Miss Mittie to take away with her - she left in morn.
Fri. 23rd. Bright and cool from E of N. Willie and I gathered about 3 p'ks of figs early in morn for Minnie to preserve and helped Lewis' boys to gather about 3 p'ks to preserve by 9 in morn. May McCraine and 5 of her children and Maggie Major and 2 of hers came in morn and left late in eve.
Sat. 24th. Bright and cool early in morn and warmer in eve from SE. Dud cut briars out N of oat patch in morn. I gathered figs for Minnie to preserve early in morn and Willie gathered too and I pulled grass out of strawberries awhile and brought home 2 canteloupes and some tomatoes from field and shucked corn by 11 1/2.
Sun. 25th. Bright and warm most of day from SE and a thunder cloud in sight in that direction late in eve. Willie and Minnie and 3 of children went to SS in eve. Nellie and Carl went to Lanehart's.
Mon. 26th. Bright and warm and very dry. Miss Cook C and Rubie came early in morn and 4 boys on a wagon from Woodville college and got figs to preserve. Willie and I helped to gather the figs most of morn. Joe Miller got some too and dined here. Willie rode Sandy to town in eve.
Tue. 27th. Bright and very warm and dry. Willie and Dud cut briars out N of oat patch today. I pulled grass out of strawberries in morn and brought home a canteloupe and some tomatoes from field too and I drew water for tomorrow's washing in eve.
Wed. 28th. Bright and very warm and dry and no rain in sight. Willie and Dud cut briars out N of oat patch today. I gathered some figs for Minnie to preserve and some for Carrie Lanehart and some for Rubie and Janie C in morn and shelled some bread corn and got wood and water in eve. Leah washed here today.
Thu. 29th. Bright and very warm till 3 1/2 in eve and rained around in thunder showers at 3 1/2 to 5 1/2 and we had a good shower (enough to make mud) and very much needed too. Willie and Dud cut trees and briars out N of oat patch today. I gathered some figs to preserve and brought some okra and brought 3 p'ks of small tomatoes and one of big ones from field by 10 in morn - made 2 turns bringing in tomatoes.
Fri. 30th. Bright and warm in morn and rained around in thunder showers most of eve and we had 2 showers (about as much as on yesterday). Willie and Dud cut briars in pasture today. I planted 7 rows of Irish potatoes in garden in morn and shelled some bread corn and got wood and water in eve.
Sat. 31st. Bright and very warm most of day but rained a little shower here at 3 in eve. Willie drove Sandy to town in morn and returned at 11 1/2. Dud didn't work today. I set up 4 posts to grape arbor in garden early in morn and brought in some okra and tomatoes and sowed some tomatoe seeds by 11 1/2.
