JULY 1902
Tue. July 1st. Bright and warm and muggy most of day. Thundershowers passed around SE from S ______ but only dropped here. Willie and Henry picked cotton in lower part of Luckett field in ___. Willie and Henry finished there last of ____. ____and I put about 1 1/2 bu of ashes in the garden and carried ___and a watermelon to Wiley's and cut and packed a heavy turn of green corn stalks for cows in eve. Wiley drove Joe to town in eve.
Wed. 2nd. Bright and warm and dry till 2 in eve and clouded up then and rained SE and E of here in thundershowers at 3 to 5 but none here. Willie and Henry cut and split some pine wood toward Luckett field for molasses and didn't work in eve. I hoed sugar cane in cow pen corner till 10 in morn. Willie and I walked to Wiley's and on to Lewis' at 4 to 5 1/2 in eve. Earl is sick with fever. Bernice went with me to Lewis'.
Thu. 3rd. Bright and warm till 2 in eve and cloudy all eve and rained around some in thundershowers from S at 2 1/2 to 6 in eve but none here. Henry sick and went home today. I hoed sugar cane in cow pen corner and in NE part of orchard till 10 1/2 in morn. Willie helped me a little while in morn but he was sick and quit at 8. I picked some apples for Minnie ___ her to take care of Carmell. ______ cooked some apple pies and cakes too ______ fixed a large box to put up for ____ box most of eve and I helped him ----. Bernice had a fever and I walked there after sunset.
Fri. 4th. Bright and warm and very dry but a pleasant breeze from S all day and rained around in thundershowers some in eve but none here. Willie put up a box to set milk in by Pa's old room in morn. Wiley drove Joe to town early in morn and got Dr. Magruder to come out to see Bernice - she had fever yesterday eve and last night but it went off this morn. I hoed in sugar cane in NE corner of orchard till 10 1/2 in morn. We had ___ freezers of ice cream late in eve and Clara and Effie and Dan and Buddy and little Bud all here and Wiley too. Mary and Willie James came just before we made the cream and stayed all night.
Sat. 5th. Bright and warm and very dry and rained around in thundershowers some in eve but none here. Willie and Henry and I and Dan went to Wiley's early in morn and straightened up blocks under Wileys kitchen and I hoed in sugar cane in NE corner of orchard at 9 to 11. Willie and Wiley drove Joe to buggy to town in eve and returned at dusk. I cut up wood and sacked some corn stalks for cows and milked ___ all of them in eve and I carried some ____ to Wiley's late in eve and Helen and Viola were there in eve. Bernice was up today but had fever again in night.
Sun. 6th. Bright and warm and dry. It rained around in thundershowers at 12 to ___ in eve but only sprinkled here at 2 1/2. I walked to Wiley's 3 times today - Bernice was up some but had a little fever in eve. Gussie and Helen _____ left there in eve. Mary James still here.
Mon. 7th. Bright and warm and very dry and no rain in sight today and vegetation ___ and dried up. Willie and Henry cut and split molasses wood part of morn and part of eve ____ Luckett field. Wiley drove mare mule ___to wagon to town in morn and carried 8 geese and a turkey gobler to Metzger's and returned at 11 1/2. I helped Wiley to catch geese and turkey gobler in morn and I hoed in sugar cane in NE corner of orchard at 8 3/4 to 10 3/4 in morn. I walked to Wiley's again at 2 and carried some green apples and a few figs and I packed and cut up some wood and packed some corn stalks for cows. Mary James went to Lewis' in eve and there at night.
Tue. 8th. Bright and warm and dry and rained ____ of here in sight in eve but none here. Willie and Henry cut and split molasses wood in morn and didn't work in eve on account of heat. I hoed in sugar cane in NE corner of orchard till 10 1/2 in morn and finished last of it. I carried a little bucket of figs to Wiley's at 2 to 3. Willie and I cut and packed in some corn stalks for horses and cows late in eve.
Wed. 9th. Bright and warm and dry till 3 in eve and we had a good little shower at 3 3/4 to 4 1/2 from E with a good deal of thunder and some of it close and we had a slow rain just after dark. Willie and Henry cut and split molasses wood in morn and didn't work in eve. I put up a panel of fence at NE corner of orchard ___ fence (at bars) and I put up some pickets ___ corner of it (near barn) and I put some old ___ of wire (1 to panel) all the way and I ___ 4 bar rails from old road in ____ . I carried a little bucket of figs to Wiley's ____ and Willie and Henry and I packed in some corn stalks for cows and horses at 2 3/4 to ____.
Thu. 10th. Clear and warm all morn and began to cloud up at 12 and cloudy some and sultry till _____ and a heavy rain cloud passed around just N of here from E with a good deal of thunder and we got a good hard shower at 4 to 5 and another from SE at 7 3/4 to 9 1/2 at night which ____ wet ground well and was much needed for vegetation was badly burned up. Willie and Henry and I put up 3 more strands of wire on fence between here and road making it nearly hog - proof by 10 3/4 in morn and we didn't work in eve. I carried a litle bucket of figs to Wiley's at 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 and Willie and I packed some corn stalks at 3 to 3 1/2. Minnie and Carmell and Mary James walked to Wiley's and back at 3 to 6 in eve.
Fri. 11th. Clear and calm and warm all morn and clouded up at 3 in eve and rained around in thundershowers at 3 to 6 and we had a good one at 4 3/4 to 5 3/4 from E. Willie plowed ___ and Henry plowed mare mule in locust ground (laying by) in morn and till 4 1/2 in eve. I hoed in our potatoe patch on hilltop of Persimmon cut till 11 in morn and I carried a bucket of figs to Wiley's at 2 and I put out some tomato and pepper plants in ______ and packed in 2 turns of corn stalks _____ by 4 1/2 in eve. Mary and Willie James __________ ________.
Sat. 12th. Bright and warm and no rain ____ in thundershowers some in night. ______ cotton in new ground in morn and Willie drove Joe _____ I set out 4 rows of ____ yams on hilltop of ____ in morn where but very few came up and I _____ some beans and cucumbers in garden in eve and packed 2 turns of corn stalks for cows and milked all. We had ice cream late in eve and Nellie and Bernice ____. Buddy and Tigner here too.
Sun. 13th. Bright and warm in morn and rained around in thundershowers at 12 to 3 in eve but none here today. I walked to Wiley's ____ and carried some tomatoes and figs and Bernice came back with me and I took her home _______ and Minnie and Carmell went too. Wiley went to his Pa's in morn. West and Chunk ____of day and Buddy here in eve.
Mon. 14th. Bright and warm and thundered ____. A cloud gathered SE of here _____ and rained at Clara's and lightening struck ____ trees but only sprinkled here. Willie and Henry plowed cotton most of day in ____ field. I gathered 1/2 bu of figs early in morn and Minnie preserved them today and I hoed grass out of Queen potatoes on hilltop of Persimmon cut most of day. I carried some figs to Wiley's at 1 1/4 to 2 in eve.
Tue. 15th. Bright and warm all morn and rained around in thundershowers near here at 1 to 3 1/2 in eve but only dropped here. Willie and Henry plowed cotton most of day in Luckett field with Joe and mule. I hoed and picked grass out of our potatoe patch on hilltop of Persimmon cut in morn and some in eve and finished there. I carried some tomatoes and figs to Wiley's at 1 to 2 1/4 in eve.
Wed. 16th. Bright and warm and dry and no rain in sight today but thundered far off in eve. Willie and Henry pulled all of our boat corn in Gate cut by 10 3/4 in morn and I hauled in 1 wagon load with Joe and mule by 11 1/4 and 2 more in eve. I stretched the vines in gaps in our Queen potatoes on hilltop of Persimmon cut most of day and finished all of it but 2 rows. I carried some figs to Wiley's at 1 to 2 1/4 in eve.
Thu. 17th. Bright and warm till _____ then a thundershower came up from S and passed around and we had a hard shower at 12 and much needed and cloudy and sultry all eve. Willie and Henry plowed _____ most of day in Luckett field. I hoed and set vines in gaps in potatoes on hilltop of Persimmon cut ______ and I carried some figs to Wiley's at 1 1/2 to ____ and _____ed over all of garden at 3 to 6 in eve.
Fri. 18th. Bright and warm all day and rained around in thundershowers at 11 3/4 to 3 in eve but none here. Willie and Henry plowed ____ in Luckettt field most of day. I hoed cotton in locust ground at back of field in morn and I carried some figs to Wiley's at 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 and I gathered all of our apples (about 1 bu of good ones) in eve.
Sat. 19th. Bright and warm from S all morn and rained around in thundershowers at 12 to 3 in eve but none here. Willie repaired wire fence beyond Luckett field (where a cow got in on yesterday) in morn. Henry and I drove Joe and mare mule to wagon to town in morn and got 1 bbl flour, ____ meal and 10 lbs of lard and 1 pair of plow shoes for me on credit at Metzger's and we got home at 11. Nellie and Lila and Bernice drove Rosa to town in morn and dined with Mrs. Baker and brought some ice late in eve and we made some ice cream and Gordon and Tigner and all of Lewis' children were here but the custard was scorched and not good.
Sun. 20th. Bright and warm from S till 10 in morn and began to rain then in little showers and we had a big rain from S with some thunder at 11 to 12 1/4 and much needed too and it wet ground thoroughly. Willie rode Joe to Clara's early in morn and returned late in eve. Clara and Effie and little Bud here most of day. I walked to Wiley's early in morn and carried Carmell and some figs and some tomatoes and I packed in a turn of corn stalks in morn. Lewis here in eve awhile.
Mon. 21st. Bright ____ W and no rain but thundered far off all day. Willie and Henry hoed cotton in new ground and in locust ground most of day. Lewis and Buddy got some Queen vines in morn. I cut some vines most of morn and some Negroes got some too on hilltop of Persimmon cut. Tigner D and little Bud and Peter brought wagon and got vines for them in morn. I walked to Wiley's at 1 1/2 to 2 1/4 and carried some tomatoes and a few figs and apples and I hilled a few rows of Queens at 3 to 5 3/4 in eve.
Tue. 22nd. Bright and cool early in morn but warm after 9 in morn and a slow cloud came up from S at 4 in eve and rained a slow shower here at 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 in eve. Willie and Henry plowed ____ cotton in Luckett field part of morn. I drove Joe to cart to Seymour's early in morn and left it there to have 1 wheel filled and I hilled Queen potatoes on hilltop of Persimmon cut with hoe at 7 1/4 to 10 1/4 in morn. I carried Carmell and a few figs to Wiley's early in eve.
Wed. 23rd. Bright and very warm till 3 in eve and clouded up then and rained around in thundershowers at 3 to 6 and we had a good one at 4 to 6 - slowly - from W. Willie plowed Golden and Henry plowed mule and they finished last of our cotton and all of our sugar cane (in orchard) by 11 1/4 in morn. Wiley drove Joe to town in morn and got some ice and all of us dined at Wiley's (his birthday) and had ice cream late in eve. I hilled nearly all of my 4 rows of red potatoes on hilltop of Persimmon cut in morn. I came home from Wiley's at 3 in eve and got __________ cut and packed a roasting pole for chicken and packed a turn of corn stalks for cows ___ and walked back to Wiley's at ____ for ice cream.
Thu. 24th. Cloudy and dropped rain _____ than on yesterday. Willie rode Joe to Luckett field early in morn and didn't work today. ________ hilling our potatoes on hilltop of Persimmon cut by 9 in morn and cut and packed 3 poles and 4 posts from old road to garden and put up an arbor for some late beans by 10 1/2. I walked to Wiley's and carried some tomatoes and a few figs at 1 to 2 and Bernice came back with me and we rode Joe to Seymour's and brought cart home by 4. Seymour filled one of cart wheels for old buggy.
Fri. 25th. Cloudy and very little sunshine all day and a little cool and no rain here but thundered far off most of day. Willie drove Joe to buggy to Seymour's early in morn and got him to fix one broken rib. Henry didn't work today. I hoed over all of garden and bean patch in orchard by 10 1/4 in morn and packed some wood in eve and packed 32 canes from field and stuck my late beans in garden. I carried some butter and milk to Wiley's at dusk.
Sat. 26th. Cloudy and not much sunshine all day and rained around in little thundershowers all day till late in eve but only sprinkled here several times. I drove Joe to cart to Wiley's early in morn and got Nellie's sewing machine and some other things and brought home. Willie and Minnie and Carmell drove Joe to Mrs. James' in morn and Nellie and Rena and Bernice and baby came from Wiley's at 10 in morn and here all eve and night too. I hoed okra in orchard at 7 3/4 to 10 in morn and I burned up burrs from under chestnut tree and packed and cut up wood and packed some corn stalks for cows and Gordon helped and I milked all of cows. Wiley got some ice from Ed Ogden late in eve and we made some ice cream before dark.
Sun. 27th. Cloudy and rained around in little showers most of day but only sprinkled here - sunshine most of day. Wiley and Rena and Bernice and baby here till late in eve. Willie and Minnie and Carmell returned from Mrs. James' at 1 1/2 in eve.
Mon. 28th. Bright and warm most of morn and began to rain around in little showers at 9 1/2 in morn and a thunder cloud passed around W from S at 12 1/4 to 1 but only sprinkled here and rained and thundered around most of eve. Willie and Henry hoed cotton in Luckett field most of day and I hoed with them in morn and I packed and cut up some wood and packed some corn stalks for cows and picked some whip peas on NE corner of Persimmon cut to put away to feed ____ in eve.
Tue. 29th. Bright and warm from SW till 12 and rained around in thundershowers most of eve and rained enough here to run a little on solid ground. Willie and Henry and I hoed cotton in Luckett field in morn and didn't work in eve on account of showers.
Wed. 30th. Bright and warm part of day and rained around in thundershowers from SW at 9 in morn to 2 in eve but only dropped a little here. Willie and Henry hoed cotton in Luckett field most of day and I hoed with them in morn and I picked some whip peas on NE corner of Persimmon cut in eve.
Thu. 31st. Bright and warm all day but a damp and pleasant breeze from SW all day and rained a little in N with some little thunder from NW. Willie and Henry hoed cotton in Luckett field most of day and I hoed with them in morn and I packed some wood and some _____ and some corn stalks for cows ____ vines for 2 Negroes ____ 1 to 2 in eve.
