JULY 1900
Sun. Jul. 1st. Bright and warm and thundered far off in eve but no rain here. Nellie and Bernice drove Fanny mule and Rena and Miss Maggie Comfort walked to B C's in morn and all returned late in eve but Miss Maggie - she went to town with Seymour in eve to have her teeth fixed on tomorrow. Willie and Minnie and Pa and Wiley and I all dined here. I rode Joe to Clara's and back in eve. I had a dull headache all day but it left me late in eve.
Mon. 2nd. Bright, in morn and cloudy all eve, and very warm all day and thundered and showered around near most of eve but none here. Willie and I molded cotton in SW corner of Luckett field and finished it at 10 in morn and we plowed the late corn there till 11 1/2 and I plowed all eve there in the late corn with Joe laying it by and Willie cut out grass in cotton in middle part of Luckett field all eve with his hoe. Seymour returned from Mrs' James' and brought Miss Maggie Comfort back and she stayed here at night.
Tue. 3rd. Bright and warm most of day from SE but rained around near in thundershowers at 3 to 5 in eve but only dropped a little here. Pa dug some of Irish potatoes in NE corner of orchard and hoed some of his cotton there (in water furrows) today. Willie cut biggest grass and weeds out of cotton in Luckett field all day with his hoe and I plowed late corn there (on lower side) all day with Joe laying it by. Nellie and Minnie and Rena worked some in eve for a dinner on tomorrow.
Wed. 4th. Bright and warm but a damp and pleasant breeze from SE all morn and till late in eve. It began to rain around in little thunder showers at 2 1/2 in eve and lasted till 5 1/2 and we had a good one at 5 1/2 to 6 1/4. Pa walked to Clara's in morn and got wet coming home at 6 1/4. Willie and Minnie drove Joe to town in morn to have their pictures retaken but the artist was too drunk to work. Dixie and Rubie came on Hattie early in morn and Seymour and family and Bob Fugler and Wiley and Rena and Bernice and Miss Maggie Comfort all dined here. I worked on my potatoe patch all day on hilltop of H ridge. I stretched and set vines in gaps and hilled 9 short rows with hoe by 5 1/2 and rain stopped me.
Thu. 5th. Bright and warm from SE all day, and no rain here but thunder showers passed around in sight most of eve. Pa dug some Irish potatoes and hoed cotton too in NE corner of orchard today and I packed in 2 turns of the potatoes at 1 1/2 to 2 in eve. Willie hoed cotton all day in Luckett field. I plowed late corn on lower side of Luckett field and finished there at 8 3/4 in morn and I plowed some cotton in Pine corner (which I left there more than a week ago) and finished it by 4 1/4 in eve and I hilled some short rows of potatoes on hilltop of H ridge late in eve with my hoe.
Fri. 6th. Bright and very warm all day and thundered far off most of day but no rain in sight. Willie hoed cotton all day in Luckett field. Pa finished digging the Irish potatoes in NE corner of orchard in morn and hoed in his cotton in hollow in orchard in eve. I plowed out our potatoe patch with 4 furrows (2nd time) on hilltop of H ridge, all but the short ones (on top) and I hilled them with my hoe and finished by 11 in morn, and I plowed in Pa's cotton by front gate most of eve, and ground was too dry and solid in places. I had a dull headache all day but it went off late in eve. Miss Maggie Comfort and Minnie walked to Seymour's in eve and Willie went too after dark to fiddle. Nellie stayed at Wiley's at night.
Sat. 7th. Bright and very warm and getting too dry. It thundered far off in eve but no rain here. Nellie and Rena and baby drove Fanny (mule) to Jack D 's in morn. Pa hoed in his cotton in hollow in orchard in morn and walked to Clara's and back in eve. Willie hoed cotton in Luckett field most of day. I plowed all of our sugar cane in NE corner of orchard with 4 furrows (2nd time) by 8 1/2 in morn and I plowed in Pa's cotton by front gate balance of day and finished last of it by 5 1/4 in eve and it was hard plowing on account of ground being so solid and too dry. Willie and Minnie and Miss Maggie Comfort went to bee tree cutting in Lewis' pasture late in eve and returned at dusk. I milked all of cows late in eve.
Sun. 8th. Bright and warm and dry from NW and no rain but thundered in a cloud in sight in NW late in eve and at night. Seymour came by in his hack and carried Miss Maggie Comfort to Mrs. James'. Wiley and I caught Dan in cow pasture early in morn and Wiley rode him to his Pa's and Nellie and Rena and baby came back with him at dark driving Gussie's mare. Old Fanny mule was foundered or something like it. Pa and Willie and Minnie here most of day. Willie and Minnie walked to Lewis' late in eve. I milked all of cows (5) late in eve.
Mon. 9th. Cloudy all day and thunder showers passed around from early in morn till late in eve from NW but no rain here and very warm in eve. Pa hoed in his cotton in hollow in orchard today. Willie hoed cotton on hilltop of Luckett field all day and I began to plow cotton in middle part of Luckett field early in morn, with 4 furrows, with Joe, and I plowed up the hill there all day. Gussie came late in eve and here till 9 1/2 at night and carried his mare home. Nellie and Rena and baby drove her home from Jack D's yesterday eve.
Tue. 10th. Bright and quite warm till 1 and a thunder cloud passed around W of here from SE and we had a little shower but not quite enough to run and cloudy and pleasant all eve and thundered around most of eve. Willie finished hoeing oldest cotton and pinders in Luckett field by 9 in morn and hoed cotton in new 3rd Cane hollow balance of day. Pa hoed in his cotton in hollow in orchard today. I plowed cotton all day in Luckett field with Joe, with 4 furrows and sometimes 6, and I plowed Willie's popcorn and pinders too in eve. I got some yellow boat corn on H ridge to feed Joe on, today, our old corn is about out.
Wed. 11th. Bright and cool early in morn but warm after 9 in morn and a thunder cloud passed around just E of here from S at 1 1/4 and we had a little shower then and another cloud came up from S at 4 in eve and rained a little slowly till 5 1/4. Willie hoed in 3rd Cane hollow (cotton) till 3 3/4 in eve and rain stopped him and Pa hoed in hollow in orchard today. I drove Joe to cart to Cohen's early in morn and got a bbl of lime and some other things for Wiley and got some coffee and lard and coal oil for us on credit and I paid Cohen $7 on the wallpaper and still owe 35cts. on it. I carried Wiley's things to his house and got back home by 11. I plowed cotton in Luckett field at 2 to 3 3/4 in eve and rain stopped me.
Thu. 12th. Bright but some clouds all morn and rain clouds came up at 11 and we had a good soaking rain from E at 12 to 1 and much needed too and cloudy all eve and drizzled some late in eve. Willie hoed in 3rd Cane hollow till 11 in morn and again in eve at 3 1/2 to 6 1/2. I plowed cotton on hilltop of Luckett field with Joe till 11 in morn. Willie and I drove up old Cherry's youngest heifer (Cherry) with a red bull calf and got her into calf pasture (through the back gate) at 2 to 2 3/4 in eve. I carried some peaches and apples to Wiley's at 2 1/4. I hoed cotton awhile in eve on E end of Gate cut by H ridge. Pa cut some weeds in yard today.
Fri. 13th. Cloudy all day and no sunshine and a damp breeze from SE and pleasant too and dropped rain some in morn and some in eve too. Willie hoed cotton all day in 3rd Cane hollow and Pa cut weeds in yard and I hoed cotton all day on E end of Gate cut (old potatoe patch). Aunt Margaret washed for Nellie in morn and Lucy helped Nellie to hoe up grass in front yard and trim up bushes today.
Sat. 14th. Cloudy all day and very little sunshine and a damp breeze from SE and thunder showers passed around some in eve but only dropped here at 12 1/2. Willie and I tried to drive up young Cherry (with a young calf) early in morn but couldn't find the calf and I tried again late in eve and found the calf and got them nearly to cow pen with milk cows but they ran off again. Willie hoed cotton in 3rd new Cane hollow at 7 to 11 in morn and I hoed cotton on E end of Gate cut and Pa cut weeds in yard in morn and walked to Clara's and back in eve. Willie and Minnie drove Joe to Mrs. James' in eve and I pulled grass and burrs out of all of our potatoe patch on hilltop of H ridge at 2 to 4 1/4 in eve.
Sun. 15th. Bright but some clouds all morn and warm and rained around in thunder showers near here at 2 1/2 to 5 in eve from S but only sprinkled here. Wiley rode Dan to his Pa's in morn and brought old Fanny mule back late in eve. She has been there since yesterday a week ago. Rena and baby here all day and Clara and her 3 children here in eve. I cut some corn stalks on H ridge in morn and again late in eve for hogs and calves. Willie and Minnie returned from Mrs. James' at dark.
Mon. 16th. Bright and warm till 2 in eve and rained around in thunder showers from SW at 2 to 5 in eve but only sprinkled here at 3 1/2 to 4 1/4 and rained a slow little shower at 6 1/4 to 7 1/2 in eve. Pa cut weeds in yard today and Willie hoed cotton most of day in 3rd Cane hollow and I plowed cotton on hilltop of Luckett field in morn and till 3 3/4 in eve and finished the oldest cotton there and I harrowed in the late cotton there in middle part of field, running twice to row, at 4 1/4 to 6 1/4 in eve. Wiley and I milked in the rain late in eve (at sunset).
Tue. 17th. Bright and warm till 1 and clouded up from SW and we had a good shower at 1 3/4 to 2 1/2 and slowly till 4 1/4. Pa walked to Clara's early in morn and on to Cohen's and got about $8 worth on credit and returned late in eve. Willie hoed cotton in 3rd Cane hollow all morn and I harrowed late cotton in lower part of Luckett field all morn with Joe. I carried a bucket of peaches and 7 figs to Wiley's at 3 to 4 1/2 in eve. Wiley and Willie and I drove up young Cherry (with her young calf) with milk cows late in eve.
Wed. 18th. Cloudy and wet and sultry till 9 1/2 and bright till 11 and sprinkled rain at 11 1/4 to 11 1/2 and bright till 2 and rained around near in thunder showers at 2 1/4 and rained slowly here at 3 3/4 to 6 1/2 in eve. Pa cut weeds in yard in morn and Willie and Freeman Jones and wife hilled cotton (in late one) in Luckett field all morn and Willie and Freeman again in eve at 2 to 3 1/2 and rain stopped them. I harrowed cotton in Luckett field in morn and again in eve at 2 to 3 1/2 with Joe and ground was wet and sticky all morn. I packed and cut up some wood and packed a sack of corn from H ridge and Wiley and I milked in the rain and I got nearly wet. I had a dull headache all of yesterday and last night and till this eve and it left me.
Thu. 19th. Cloudy, but bright and warm in morn and a thunder cloud came up at 1 1/2 and rained a heavy one till 2 1/2 and slowly balance of eve. Willie and Freeman and wife hilled late cotton on lower side of Luckett field all morn and I harrowed there in morn but it was too wet and sticky to work well. We didn't work in eve on account of rain. Wiley and I milked in a slow rain late in eve. Bernice here most of day.
Fri. 20th. Cloudy and wet, but bright till 1 1/2, and clouded up then and rained around in thunder showers all eve and rained here slowly most of eve. Pa cut weeds in yard in morn and Willie hoed cotton in Luckett field in morn and I hoed cotton in Gate cut on E end (old potatoe patch) all morn. Rena and baby here all day. We did not work in eve on account of rain. I got some corn on H ridge and Wiley and I milked in a slow rain.
Sat. 21st. It began to rain slowly at sunrise and lasted till 8 in morn and bright till 1 1/2 and we had a hard rain at 1 1/2 to 2 1/4 from NE and bright till late in eve and rained slowly till in night. Willie rode Joe to Seymour's early in morn coon hunting and returned at 8 (wet) and Willie and Minnie drove Joe to Wiley's buggy to Aunt Mary's in eve - they left here at 2 1/2. Pa walked to Clara's and back in eve and carried some peaches to them. I dug dirt away from outside of front gate and carried some peaches to Wiley and cut some corn stalks for hogs and packed some wood at 8 to 11 1/4 in morn. Rena and Bernice here all eve and at night too. Wiley and I milked in rain late in eve.
Sun. 22nd. Bright and pleasant from S and no rain today but thundered around some late in eve. Wiley and Rena and Bernice here all day. Willie and Minnie came back from Aunt Mary's at dusk.
Mon. 23rd. Bright and warm from S and no rain but thunder showers passed around most of eve and one passed around E from S late in eve (5 to 6) near here. Willie hilled cotton all day in Luckett field and Freeman Jones and wife too but Willie came home at 5 1/2 in eve with a headache. Nellie and Lucy washed and sunned beds today. I hoed cotton in Gate cut till 11 1/4 in morn and again in eve till 5 and cloud ran me home then.
Tue. 24th. Bright and warm from S till 12 and we had a little shower at 12 1/2 and we had a hard one at 2 and slowly till 3 1/2 in eve. Willie and Freeman and wife hilled cotton in Luckett field all morn and I plowed there in late cotton in middle part of field most of morn with Joe. We didn't work in eve on account of rain. I carried some peaches to Wiley at 3 1/4 and packed 2 turns of wood and Wiley and I milked late in eve. Nellie at Wiley's most of eve.
Wed. 25th. Bright and warm from SW till 10 in morn and began to shower then, and we had a big one at 10 1/2 to 11 and slowly till 12 and we had a slow one at 1 to 2 1/2 and cloudy all eve. Pa hoed in his cotton in NE part of orchard (Irish potatoe patch) awhile in morn and on yesterday too. Willie and Freeman and wife hilled cotton in Luckett field till 10 in morn and rain stopped them. I hoed cotton in Gate cut till 9 1/4 and cut some corn stalks in old Cane hollow for hogs and calves and rain ran me home at 10 1/4. I patched 2 old shoes by packing and sewing leather on heels of them at 10 1/2 to 2 in eve and I carried some peaches to Wiley's at 3 and brought Bernice back with me and I packed and cut up some wood and Wiley and I milked late in eve.
Thu. 26th. Cloudy all day and we had a very heavy rain from W at 6 to 8 1/2 in morn and sprinkled at 1 1/2 to 2 and rained slowly late in eve and at night. We didn't work on account of wet. Willie rode Joe and Wiley rode Fanny mule and went rabbit hunting in eve. I carried some peaches and 8 figs to Rena and baby at 3 in eve and they came back with me and I packed some wood and Wiley and I milked late in eve.
Fri. 27th. Cloudy all day, but bright part of time, and sun shined some little and thunder showers passed around some in morn and some in eve but only dropped here slowly at 4 to 6 in eve. Pa cut weeds in yard in morn and hoed in his cotton and beans in orchard part of eve. Willie and I hoed cotton in Gate cut most of morn and till 4 1/2 in eve and the slow rain stopped us then. Minnie rode Joe to Seymour's and back in eve.
Sat. 28th. Cloudy some all day, but bright part of day, and some sunshine and warm and no rain but thundered and rained around some far off. Pa cut some weeds in yard in morn and Willie and I hoed cotton in Gate cut till 10 1/2 in morn. Robert James and his little brother, Luster came at 11 1/2 and went to Seymour's in eve and on home at night. I rode Joe in cow pasture at 2 1/2 in eve and caught Dan and brought him home and I brought Bernice here on Joe. Willie and Minnie were to go to Jack D's in eve on horseback, but Minnie felt unwell and it looked too much like rain and they didn't go. Pa, Willie and I packed and cut up some wood in eve and I milked all of cows (6) late in eve.
Sun. 29th. Bright and warm all morn from W or S of W and a thunder cloud came up at 1 but didn't rain here then and another came up from W at 4 and we had a hard shower till 5 and quit then. Pa walked to Clara's in morn and returned late in eve. Nellie and Rena and Bernice drove Fanny mule to Kendrick's and Wiley rode Goulden early in morn and returned at dusk. Willie and Minnie and I home today. Joe Miller and little Allen came at 10 in morn and left at 2 1/2 and went to Seymour's and went on home late in eve. Dan and Gordon and Buddy here at 3 to 5 3/4 in eve.
Mon. 30th. Bright and warm from SW all morn and part of eve and a thunder cloud came up near from SW at 5 in eve but only dropped here then. Pa cut weeds in yard in morn and Willie hoed cotton most of day in Luckett field and Freeman and wife hoed there too in eve. I drove Joe to cart to Cohen's early in morn and got a bbl of flour and 1 bu meal, 1/2 sk salt and $1 worth of coffee on credit and borrowed $4.50 to pay hands for hoeing and I got some sugar and lard and paid for them and I got home at 11 1/2. I fed hogs on corn stalks just after dinner and brought home a sack of corn from H ridge and I hoed cotton in Gate cut at 2 to 4 3/4 in eve and rain ran me home then.
Tue. 31st. Bright and warm from NW and no rain here, but thundered around far off all eve. Pa hoed in his cotton by front gate awhile in morn and again in eve. Willie and Freeman and wife hilled cotton in Luckett field most of day and they finished there late in eve and Willie paid them up. I hoed cotton in Gate cut most of morn and I turned down tops of corn in old cow pen corner (in orchard) most of eve to prevent pea vines breaking it down for it is very tall and the peas rank.
