JULY 1897
Thu. July 1st. Bright and warm and dry and no rain near but thundered far off and rain clouds in sight all eve. Pa hoed cotton in old Cane hollow all day and Willie plowed Dick and I Hattie in Coon field most of day. We quit rather early in eve on account of horses being so warm and tired.
Fri. 2nd. Bright and warm and dry from SW and no signs of rain today. Pa hoed cotton in old Cane hollow all day and Willie went to hoeing frolic at Estina early in morn and there all day. I plowed cotton most of day in Coon field in corner by gate (NE corner) with Hattie.
Sat. 3rd. Bright and warm and very dry all day from SW but thundered and showered in S far off but in sight late in eve and at night. Pa hoed cotton in old Cane hollow till 10 in morn. Willie and I finished plowing cotton in Coon field in about 1 1/2 hours early in morn with Hattie and Dick and we plowed cotton on SE hill side of old Cane hollow till 9 3/4 and quit. The ground is too dry to plow well. Willie patched wire fence on S side of Coon field in eve. One of Lewis' cows got into Coon field there last night and went on into our cow pasture. I drove Hattie to Dixie's buggy to Cohen's in eve and got 1 sk oats and 2 plow points on credit and some other things which I paid for and returned before sunset.
Sun. 4th. Bright and quite warm all morn and a thunder cloud came up from S and we had a good shower (at 2 1/2 to 4 in eve) which wet ground some but not near enough for ground was very dry. Nellie and Willie walked to Seymour's in morn and there all day. I put our little chester boar out of pen and turned him loose in yard in morn and I walked in cow pasture and salted cattle in morn. Lewis here in morn awhile and helped us to eat a watermelon which Clara sent us.
Mon. 5th. Cloudy and warm and damp till 10 1/2 in morn and bright and quite warm after then but thundered and showered around some in eve not far off but none here. Pa hoed cotton in old Cane hollow most of day and Willie and I plowed cotton there most of day with Hattie and Dick with 4 furrows (laying by). I ate some figs at 9 in morn and had colic pains in my bowels at 12 1/2 to 2 and then the pain went into the right side of my head and jaw and I had a dull pain there most of eve and all night but I slept pretty well.
Tue. 6th. Cloudy and rained a little shower at 8 in morn from NE and another one at 1 1/2 to 2 3/4 and cloudy all eve and dropped rain again at 5 1/4 in eve. Willie and I finished plowing cotton in old Cane bottom at 9 in morn and Willie plowed cotton on upper side of Cherry cut balance of day with Dick and I plowed cotton in new 2nd Cane hollow with Hattie at 9 to 11 in morn and at 3 to 5 1/4 in eve. I had a dull headache all last night and all this morn and I took some pills and the headache left me after dinner. Pa hoed cotton in old Cane hollow till 9 in morn (ahead of plowing) and he hoed cotton on W side of Cherry cut (in new part) balance of day.
Wed. 7th. Bright and quite warm most of day, but thunder showers passed around some in eve, but none here. Willie plowed cotton in Cherry cut most of day with Dick and I plowed cotton most of day in new 2nd Cane hollow with Hattie. Pa hoed cotton on W side of Cherry cut in morn and on H ridge in eve. I had a very severe pain in my right (lower) jaw and tooth all morn but it left me at 1 o'clock.
Thu. 8th. Bright, but dark clouds all morn and warm and a heavy cloud came up from E at 12 and we had a good shower then and another little one at 2 to 2 3/4. Willie plowed cotton till 10 1/2 in morn on W side of Cherry cut and some in water hole cut and I plowed cotton with Hattie in new 2nd Cane hollow till 10 1/2 in morn and finished there. Pa hoed cotton on H ridge in morn and he pulled grass out of slips on H ridge in eve. I drove Hattie to cart to Cohen's in eve at 3 to 6 3/4 and got a bbl. flour and 1 bu. meal on credit and some other things which I paid for. The road was very soft and muddy. I carried a bucket of figs (which I gathered at 10 3/4 to 11 1/2).
Fri. 9th. Bright and quite warm all morn and till 2 1/2 in eve and rained around near at 2 1/2 to 5 in thunder showers in eve but none here and cloudy and pleasant after 3 in eve. Pa hoed cotton on H ridge awhile in morn and didn't work in eve. Willie plowed cotton with Dick till 10 1/2 in morn in water hole cut and finished last of our cotton (all being plowed over 2nd and last time), I hilled slips on H ridge till 10 1/2 in morn with hoe and all eve (at 3 to 6 3/4). Sam King got some potatoe vines here early in morn. Nellie and Dixie washed all morn and cooked most of eve for a Quarterly meeting at Union church on tomorrow and the next day. Sat. 10th. Bright and quite warm till 4 in eve and we had a good little shower at 5 to 6 in eve from E. Nellie and I drove Hattie to Union church in morn and Dr. Hunnicut and Breland held a Quarterly conference there and we had dinner there and Nellie and I got home in the rain at 5 1/4 in eve but we didn't get wet. Wiley and Rena came at 8 1/4 in morn and Wiley went back late in eve but Rena stayed. Cousin Tom and West and Gussie here in eve but all left late in eve.
Sun. 11th. Bright and warm but a pleasant breeze from NW all morn and sultry at 1 to 4 1/2 in eve and a thunder cloud came up from W of N at 5 and we had a good little shower then and a slow one at 6 to 7 1/4 and began again at 8 1/4 and lasted most of night just a good soaking rain and didn't wash much and was needed for ground has not ben wet thoroughly for a long time. Dixie and B C went in her buggy and Wiley and Willie drove Joe to Wiley's buggy to Union church in morn and they had 2 sermons and dinner there and all came back in rain at 7 nearly wet and B C and Wiley and Mrs. Baker and Maxie F here all night. Mrs. Baker and Ida and her 2 children here all day.
Mon. 12th. Bright and pleasant with a W of N breeze all day and no rain after daylight in morn but ground very wet all morn and too wet in eve to work well. Wiley and Rena left early in morn - they went in Dixie's buggy and left theirs and Mrs. Baker and B C left in morn and Seymour came at 11 in morn and gathered some figs to preserve by 12 and Maxie F went back with him at 1 1/4. I fixed up a little table for well rope and packed some wood in morn and I fixed buggy traces at 11 1/4 to 2 and I began to hill slips on H ridge at 2 1/4 in eve but ground was rather too wet. William McGraw and wife and Lucy came at 3 in eve and I gathered some figs and peaches for them and Lucy stayed all night. Dickie C came at 3 1/4 and Willie rode Hattie and went with him to cut 2 bee trees and Willie returned in night.
Tue. 13th. Bright, nearly clear, and a cool N breeze all day and no signs of rain. Willie hoed cotton in Cherry cut and Pa on H ridge most of day. I hilled slips with hoe on H ridge most of day and finished them late in eve. William McGraw sent 3 "boys" at 11 in morn and got 3 sks of yam vines on H ridge by 12 1/4. Willie rode Joe to Union church to preaching at night.
Wed. 14th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool early in morn, but wind from S and warm in eve. Willie hoed cotton in Cherry cut and Pa on H ridge most of day. I picked and hoed grass out of all of our planted part of potatoe patch on hilltop of H ridge in morn by 11 1/4 and I hoed in sugar cane in NE corner of orchard most of eve. Willie rode Joe and Dixie and Lucy McGraw drove Hattie to Wiley's buggy to Union church late in eve to preaching.
Thu. 15th. Bright and warm all day but a pleasant SW breeze and some dark spots of clouds. Willie hoed cotton in Cherry cut and Pa on H ridge most of day. Nellie and I drove Hattie to Wiley's buggy to Union church in morn and Bro. Breland and wife held a service at 10 to 11 1/2 and we got home at 1 1/2 and I hoed my sugar cane in NE corner of orchard most of eve. I had a dull headache all day and all night too and I took 4 Pierce's pills through the day and they worked me well in eve but headache lasted all night but I slept well.
Fri. 16th. Bright and warm and getting dry and thundered far off in eve. Pa and Willie hoed cotton part of day on W side of Cherry cut and in water hole cut. My headache got better at 9 in morn and left me at noon. I hoed in sugar cane till 9 1/2 in morn and at 3 to 5 in eve and finished. B C and Dixie went in Wiley's buggy and Lucy McGraw rode Joe and Willie Hattie to Union church late in eve and returned at 12 at night.
Sat. 17th. Bright and quite warm all morn and till 2 3/4 in eve -clouded up then and sprinkled rain here and rained a good little shower at Surgett place and Chester Henderson's. Pa and Willie hoed cotton till 9 in morn in water hole cut and I hoed cotton in old Irish potatoe ground in old cow pen corner in orchard till 9 in morn. I drove Hattie to Wiley's buggy to Cohen's in eve at 2 to 6. William McGraw came at sunset and took Lucy home. She has been here since last Monday.
Sun. 18th. Bright but some dark clouds all morn and till 2 in eve and clouded up then and we had a good little shower here at 3 and another at 4 1/4 to 5 1/2 from S and needed too. Pa and I drove Hattie to Pinson place (to Wiley's buggy) early in morn (and John Deloach was there) and they had a heavy rain there at 2 3/4 to 3 3/4 and another at 4 1/4 to 5 1/4 with close thunder. Pa and I left Wiley's (in Dixie's buggy) at 3 3/4 just after first rain and 2nd rain caught us by Bay Ridge church and we turned buggy in road and waited till hardest of rain was over and we got home at 6 1/2 in eve. Joe Miller and Sally and old E.M. Tabor and Mrs. Baker and Seymour and Maxie F all dined here and left before Pa and I returned but Mrs. Baker she stayed all night.
Mon. 19th. Bright and quite warm all morn and till 2 in eve and we had 2 heavy rains from SE at 3 to 5 in eve with thunder and washed ground good deal. Pa and Willie hoed cotton on W side of Cherry cut and in water hole cut till 9 1/2 in morn and I hoed in old Irish potatoe ground and in hollow in orchard till 9 1/2 in morn. I gave old man Fayette B a sk of potatoe vines at 8 1/2 in morn and William McGraw sent his wagon and got 1/2 load at 10 1/2 to 11 in morn. Clara sent Andrew and got some figs at 1. Wiley and Rena came late in eve. The rain stopped them at Surgett gin for awhile. Wiley went back later in eve.
Tue. 20th. Bright and warm most of day but thundered and showered around far off most of eve but no rain here. I rode Hattie to Clara's early in morn and carried a bucket of peaches and brought back a watermelon at 9 3/4 in morn. Gordon is laid up rising on his heel and Lewis opened it late in eve and I rode Hattie back to Clara's late in eve to see about Gordon just after Lewis opened his heel. We didn't hoe any today - ground was too wet. Nellie and Rena put up peach pickles and fig preserves in morn and part of eve. Wiley came at 12 and he and Rena went home at 5 in eve.
Wed. 21st. Bright and very warm most of day but thundered and showered around near here in eve but none here. Pa and Willie hoed cotton in field awhile in morn and some late in eve and I hoed cotton in old cow pen corner till 9 1/4 in morn and I rode Hattie around in cow pasture at 1 to 2 in eve and salted stock. I walked back to old Coon place and gathered all of pears there about 1 1/2 pecks for Nellie to preserve at 2 1/2 to 3 1/2. I cut up wood and gathered corn and gathered a bucket of figs for Clara'a children to take home at 4 in eve.
Thu. 22nd. Bright and quite warm all morn and till 2 in eve and a thunder cloud came up from E at 2 1/2 and rained most of eve and hard part of time. Pa and Willie hoed cotton in field awhile in morn and I hoed in orchard in "pumpkin hollow" and we didn't work in eve on account of rain.
Fri. 23rd. Bright and very warm in eve and thundered around some little far off in eve but no rain here today. Willie worked on Donegal road in morn and Pa hoed down weeds in yard and I hoed cotton in orchard on W side till 10 1/2 in morn. We didn't hoe any in eve - it was so hot. Pa and I knocked down 7 wasps nests in front yard and I gathered some Grecian peach seed in orchard to plant. Dixie and Willie walked to Estina late in eve and they cut a bee tree there and fiddled at Joe Miller's till late in night.
Sat. 24th. Bright and warm and no sign of rain today. Pa and Willie hoed cotton in the 2 Cane hollows in field awhile in morn and I hoed in cotton in orchard on W side till 10 in morn. Wiley sent Jim with mule to buggy and led Rachael in morn and Jim went back in eve and left Rachael to be put to Sims' horse. I drove Hattie to Dixie's buggy to Cohen's in eve and returned 1 hour by sun.
Sun. 25th. Bright and warm from W and no rain. I rode Wiley's mare (Rachael) to Sims' early in morn and she took Sims' horse (Adlai) and Pa rode Rachael to Pinson place in eve to stay 1 week with Rena while Wiley comes here to get out timbers for his new house. Nellie and Dixie and Willie walked to Lewis' to schoolhouse to organize a Sunday School at 4 to 6 1/4 in eve and B C here till late in eve and till 9 at night.
Mon. 26th. Bright and quite warm all day and no rain but thundered far off most of day and all night. I hoed cotton in orchard on E side awhile in morn and awhile in eve. Wiley came at 11 3/4 in morn and he and Willie walked to Estina in eve and sawed down 2 large white oaks for boards with Seymour's saw and Wiley here all night.
Tue. 27th. Cloudy most of day and thundered and showered around not far off in morn and in eve too but only dropped rain here at 11 in morn. Wiley and Willie sawed off board timber all day in Estina woods and I rode Hattie and carried their dinner to them at 12 1/4 to 2 1/4. I hoed cotton on E side of orchard awhile in morn and again in eve and finished there at 5 in eve. I arose with a dull headache but took 2 Pierce's pills early in morn and 2 at 10 3/4 and headache left me at noon.
Wed. 28th. Bright, nearly clear, and a pleasant E of N breeze and no signs of rain. Wiley and Willie sawed and bolted board timber all day in Estina woods and I rode Hattie and carried their dinner to them at 12 to 1 3/4. I hoed cotton in new 2nd Cane hollow till 10 in morn and again at 3 to 5 3/4 in eve and finished there. Pa hoed more than half of that cut last week.
Thu. 29th. Bright, nearly clear, and pleasant from E of N but getting dry. Wiley and Willie sawed and bolted board timber all day in Estina woods and I carried their dinner to them at 12 to 1 3/4. I hoed cotton in old Cane hollow till 10 in morn and at 3 to 5 1/2 in eve.
Fri. 30th. Bright, nearly clear, and pleasant from E of N but getting dry. Wiley and Willie sawed and bolted board timber in Estina woods all morn and they came home at 12. Nellie went home with Wiley in eve. They drove Rachael to Dixie's buggy and led old Hattie for Pa to ride back home tomorrow. He has been staying with Rena since last Sunday. I hoed cotton in old Cane hollow most of morn and didn't hoe any in eve.
Sat. 31st. Bright, nearly clear, and cool early in morn but calm and warm after 10 in morn. Pa rode Hattie home from Pinson place in morn. I rode Joe to town early in morn and got Dr. Magruder to examine my "bag". I have had an enlargement in right side of it for more than 2 weeks. I came back by Cohen's and got 8 lbs of meat and 5 of coffee and 1 bu of meal on credit and got home at 11 1/2. I cut corn stalks for hogs and cut up wood in eve.
