JANUARY 1915
Fri. Jan. 1st. Bright and a hard freeze and white frost in morn but calm and pleasant in sun after 10 in morn. Willie hauled wood from back of our field today with the mules. I cut up wood and shucked corn in morn and piled some pine in cow pasture near creek in eve. Katie and Annabel left early in morn.
Sat. 2nd. Bright and a freeze and frost in morn but cloudy in eve and a damp breeze from E. Wiley and family went in Surry to Jack D's in morn to stay till tomorrow. Willie and Marion went hunting in morn and returned late in eve. I cut up some wood and shucked corn in morn and got wood and water and fed in eve. My right hand was swollen today and a rising on my little finger.
Sun. 3rd. Cloudy and no sun and chilly from E all day. Gordon dined here. Carmel and Marion and Charles walked to SS in eve. Willie was sick today. My right hand still swollen and sore.
Mon. 4th. Bright but cloudy some and cool from E. Willie and Dud threshed peas today in old gallery room. I drew all of water out of well and cut up wood and shucked corn in morn. I was feverish and chilly most of day. Cousin Gus came at dusk and here all night.
Tue. 5th. Cloudy and no sun all day and rained in little sprinkles from SE after 11 in morn and most of eve and hard ones late in eve. Willie and Dud and 2 other hands threshed peas in gallery room all day. Cousin Gus left in morn. I cut up wood and fed 2 cows and 8 calves in morn and got wood and water and fed in eve in rain. Miss Lottie and Rubie and Carmel went riding late in eve and got nearly wet.
Wed. 6th. Bright and a cool wind from NW in morn and clear in eve and all night. Willie and Dud and 2 hands threshed peas all day in gallery room. I cut up wood and smoked meat and shucked corn in morn and got wood and water and fed in eve.
Thu. 7th. Clear and frost in morn but pleasant in sun after 10 in morn - wind from NE today. Willie and Dud and 2 hands threshed peas today. I got wood for Leah to wash early in morn and I smoked meat today and I walked in cow pasture and put 4 of our cows in pasture from on creek in morn.
Fri. 8th. Bright and frost in morn and cool from NE. Willie and Dud and 2 hands threshed peas today. I piled some pine near creek in morn and got wood and water and fed in eve.
Sat. 9th. Bright and frost in morn and a breeze from E and warmer in eve. Willie and hands threshed peas in morn and Willie drove Sandy to town in eve. I piled some pine near creek in morn and shucked corn and got wood and water and fed in eve. Miss Lottie taught in morn and went home with her sister in eve.
Sun. 10th. Cloudy and chilly from E all morn and began to rain slowly at 2 in eve and lasted all eve and till 7 at night with some distant thunder and wind from E. Nellie and Carmel drove Sandy to buggy to Dixie's in morn and returned in rain at 4 1/4 in eve. Willie and I fed in rain late in eve.
Mon. 11th. Cloudy and no sun and a chilly wind from W of N all day and misted rain some in morn and in eve too and cleared off in night. Willie and hands threshed peas all day. I cut up wood and shucked corn and fed in morn and in eve too.
Tue. 12th. Clear and a little ice in morn and a cold wind from W of N today but pleasant in sun in eve. Willie and the 3 hands threshed peas today. I cut up wood and shucked and drew water in morn and fixed hearth in our room in eve and got wood and water and fed too.
Wed. 13th. Bright and a very white frost and freeze in morn but a breeze from SE and all melted before 12 and cloudy and warmer in eve. Willie and 3 hands threshed peas today and finished all but a few by late in eve. Willie lost 6 pigs last night from eating chinaberries. I cut up wood and got wood for Leah to wash in morn and shucked corn and got wood and water and fed in eve. Gussie D stayed here at night.
Thu. 14th. Bright but cloudy some and pleasant from SW. Dud cut wood from back of our field today. Willie rode Sandy to town in morn to see about selling his peas and came back by old Henderson place in eve and drove home a young cow with white faced calf late in eve. I piled some pine near creek in morn.
Fri. 15th. Foggy and wet most of morn and bright but cloudy some in eve and pleasant from SE. Willie drove our mules and wagon and Dud drove Wiley's team and wagon and carried 2 loads of peas to town in morn and 2 in eve and Willie sold to "Planter's" and they returned just after dark. I cut up good deal of wood and drew good deal of water and fed today.
Sat. 16th. Dark cloudy all day and rained in little sprinkles all morn from SE and a cloud blew up from NW at 2 1/4 in eve and we had a big rain with some thunder till 4 1/4 in eve and quit. Willie and Dud threshed peas in pea room most of morn and finished last of them. I cut up wood and shucked corn in morn and got a sack of pine straw by 2 in eve. Nora here in eve and Carmel walked home with her late in eve.
Sun. 17th. Cloudy and no sun and chilly from W of N all day and rained in little sprinkles most of eve and all night and very chilly all night. Nora and Clarence brought Carmel home at 1 1/2 in eve and left at 4. Willie and I fed in rain late in eve.
Mon. 18th. Cloudy and very chilly from W of N all day and rained and misted most of morn and bright late in eve and clear in night. Willie and Dud repaired hog pen in back of garden late in eve. I cut up wood and fed today.
Tue. 19th. Bright and a freeze and very white frost in morn and clear after 9 in morn and windy from W but pleasant in sun. Willie drove our wagon and Dud drove Wiley's wagon and team and carried 2 loads (and last) of peas to town at 10 in morn. We put 12 sows in pen to fatten early in morn. I helped with the hogs and peas till 10 in morn and cut up wood and shucked corn by 12 1/2 and fed in eve.
Wed. 20th. Clear and a freeze and frost in morn but pleasant in sun after 10. Willie and I hauled a load of pine from pasture near the creek early in morn and Willie and Dud repaired the water gaps near crrek by 12 and Willie and I hauled a load of pine from field just after dinner and Willie hauled wood balance of day and Dud cut wood in eve. Viola and Bernice and Rubie and Martin ate supper here and Miss Lottie went home with Rubie at 9 at night.
Thu. 21st. Bright and a freeze in morn but wind from SE and cloudy and warmer in eve. Willie hauled wood and Dud cut wood today. I cut up wood and shucked corn and got wood and water and fed in eve.
Fri. 22nd. Cloudy and a damp SE wind till 3 1/2 in eve and began to rain in showers then and lasted balance of eve and all night with some thunder and cold from N after midnight. Willie hauled wood all morn and Dud cut wood and they helped Wiley to haul one of his cows from creek in eve. I dug holes and set 6 posts for wire near plum thicket in morn and got wood and water and fed in rain late in eve.
Sat. 23rd. Cloudy and no sun and cold from W of N all day and rained some slowly most of morn and some in eve and froze on trees and houses. Willie put his 12 sows out of pen into cow pasture in eve and we did nothing today but get wood and feed.
Sun. 24th. Cloudy and no sun and sleeted and snowed early in morn and nearly covered ground and very cold in eve and all night fron W of N. All home all day.
Mon. 25th. Bright, nearly clear, and sun shined most of day and melted most of snow and still quite cold. Willie and Dud put up a shed on N side of hog house and patched up fence on N side of calf pasture today. I cut up wood and shucked corn and fed in morn and in eve too.
Tue. 26th. Bright and a freeze in morn and sun melted nearly all of sleet today and ground very wet but pleasant in sun after 10 in morn. Dud cut wood today back of our field. Willie walked across the creek and brought home some of our cattle in morn and drove Sandy to town in eve and returned before sunset. I cut up some wood and shucked some bread corn today and got wood and water and fed in eve. A spectacle agent (Green) came at dusk and here all night.
Wed. 27th. It rained some last night and bright today but cloudy some and very cool. Dud cut wood back of our field today. Willie and I shucked and shelled some bread corn in morn and in eve too.
Thu. 28th. Bright but cloudy some all day and chilly early in morn but warmer in eve. Willie hauled some wood and some slats from back of our field and Dud cut wood and split out some slats there today. I shucked and shelled some bread corn today.
Fri. 29th. Cloudy some but bright and chilly from E in morn (or SE) and pleasant in eve. Willie and Dud put up a slat pen around hog house in morn and Dud hauled wood all eve from beyond our field and Willie finished the hog pen in eve and put 12 sows in it to fatten. I shucked and shelled bread corn in morn and some in eve and got a bbl of it.
Sat. 30th. Cloudy some all day but bright and a damp SE wind all day and night too and rained some late in night. Willie and Carmel drove Sandy to town in morn and Dud drove the wagon and carried some big peas for F. D. Lewis and one bbl of bread corn and all returned late in eve. I cut up wood and shucked corn and drew water and fed today.
Sun. 31st. It began to rain before day and lasted till 1 in eve with some thunder and wind from S and a big fall of water in all. Nellie and Carmel and Charles walked to Wiley's in morn and returned at 3 in eve.
