JANUARY 1913
Wed. Jan. 1st. Foggy and wet till 10 in morn and pleasant from SW balance of day. Ben began work in morn and he and Willie cut down ground in pocket of Sims' corner all day. I piled pine in pine hollow in field in morn and shucked corn and got wood and water and fed in eve.
Thu. 2nd. Warm and cloudy till 10 1/2 in morn from S and blew up from NW at 11 and rained a little and bright after 12 in eve and a cold wind from NW all eve. Willie and Ben cleared in field today. I piled pine in Pine hollow till 10 1/2 in morn.
Fri. 3rd. Clear and a freeze in morn but pleasant in sun after 10 in morn. Willie and Ben cleared and cut wood in field today. I piled pine in field in morn and shucked corn in eve and got wood and water and fed.
Sat. 4th. Bright but cloudy some all day and windy from SW and pleasant. Nellie and Bernice drove Nancy to our buggy to town in morn and Willie rode Sandy and Wiley carried a load of corn to town and brought a load of net wire for Willie late in eve. I piled pine in field most of morn.
Sun. 5th. Cloudy and a damp wind from S all day and night too and rained some late in night. Nellie and I walked to Wiley's in eve and Willie and Carmel and Marion walked to SS in eve.
Mon. 6th. Warm, and cloudy, and a damp S wind, and rained a shower at 10 1/2 in morn and bright most of day after the rain. Willie hauled wire posts around pasture to put up a wire fence, all day and Ben dug post holes there. I piled pine in Pine hollow till 10 1/2 in morn and rain stopped me, and shucked corn in eve and got wood and water and fed.
Tue. 7th. Warm, and cloudy from S, and rained in showers at 10 to 11 in morn and blew up from NW at 3 1/2 in eve and we had a hard shower with distant thunder at 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 in eve and cold from W of N all night. Willie and Ben dug holes and set posts out NW of Wiley's till 3 1/2 in eve. I piled pine in Pine hollow till 10 1/2 in morn.
Wed. 8th. A freeze in morn and cloudy and cold from N all day and sleeted a little in morn and in eve too and wind changed to NE at dusk and very chilly all night. Willie and Ben dug holes and set posts beyond Wiley's today. I cut up wood and put a new handle in Ben's ax in morn and shucked corn and got wood and water and fed in eve.
Thu. 9th. Cloudy and no sun and a chilly wind from E but not cold enough to freeze and warmer in eve. Willie and Ben dug holes and set posts near the creek today. I got wood for Lucy to wash here early in morn and piled pine in Pine hollow in morn. Willie and Ben helped Wiley to kill and clean 6 hogs early in morn.
Fri. 10th. Warmer today and cloudy and a damp breeze from SE and rained a little in night. Willie and Ben dug holes and set posts near creek in morn and Ben in eve too and Willie rode Sandy to Mrs. Joe Mills' burying in eve. I cut down a dead pine in Pine hollow and got some pine out of it in morn and shucked corn and got wood and water in eve and fed too. Nellie at Wiley's all day cooking lard and stayed there all night.
Sat. 11th. Warm and cloudy and a damp S wind all day and rained some in little sprinkles most of morn and most of eve and a thunder cloud came up from W at dark and we had a big rain with some thunder and changed to NW and quit at 8 1/4. Willie drove Sandy to town in morn and returned at 11 3/4 and he and Marion went hunting in eve and got nearly wet. I got pine out of the log (cut down on yesterday) most of morn.
Sun. 12th. Cloudy, but bright, and a cold breeze from N all day. Chunk here most of day. Earl and Bernice went on horseback to Mrs. Morris' in morn. I walked to Wiley's and back in eve. Willie and Marion went to SS in eve. Carmel sick all day and night too and Marion too all night.
Mon. 13th. Bright and a freeze in morn but calm and pleasant in sun after 10 in morn. Willie and Ben put up braces and net wire near Wiley's in morn and Ben in eve and Willie went bird hunting with Chunk and Earl in eve. I chopped pine out of a log in Pine hollow in morn.
Tue. 14th. Clear and not quite cold enough to freeze early in morn and calm and pleasant after 10 in morn from SE. Willie and Ben put up net wire beyond Wiley's today. I chopped pine out of a log in Pine hollow in morn and shucked corn and took up manure and fed in eve.
Wed. 15th. Bright, nearly clear, and pleasant from SE but a damp breeze. Willie and Ben put up net wire near creek today. Nellie and Rena and little Nellie drove Nancy to Mrs. Morris' in morn and returned at dark. I shelled and winnowed some bread corn in morn and shucked corn and got wood and water and fed in eve.
Thu. 16th. Warm and cloudy and a damp wind from S all day and misted rain a little in morn and in eve too. Willie and Ben worked on wire fence near creek today. I got wood for Millie to wash here early in morn (Lucy left on last Sunday eve) and I chopped pine in Pine hollow balance of morn.
Fri. 17th. Warm and cloudy and a damp breeze from S all day and began to rain at 7 at night and lasted most of night with some thunder and a big fall of water in all. Willie and Ben worked on wire fence near creek today. I rode Sandy to Ogden's and carried 7 pecks of corn and left it there - the mill was not running - and I returned at 10 1/2 in morn.
Sat. 18th. We had a big rain last night and cloudy all day and a damp breeze from S. Ben rode Sandy to Ogden's mill in morn and brought home 7 pecks of meal. Willie got up all of his hogs in morn and put up 5 for meat in pen back of garden late in eve. I chopped pine out of a log in Pine hollow in morn and finished getting pine by 11 1/2 in morn.
Sun. 19th. Foggy early in morn and bright and pleasant from S most of day. Wiley and Bernice and little Wiley and little Nellie and Carmel and Marion drove Wiley's team to Surry to Meth Church in town in morn and returned at 2 and dined here. Rena and John here most of day. Willie and Carmel and Marion went to SS in eve.
Mon. 20th. Warm and bright but cloudy some all day and a damp breeze from S. Willie and Ben worked on wire fence near creek today. I packed chicken manure from hen shed in old cotton house and put on E side of garden in morn. Minnie and I hung up some meat to smoke early in morn. I shucked corn in eve and got wood and water and fed in eve.
Tue. 21st. Cloudy and no sun and chilly from E of N most of day and night too. Willie and Ben worked on wire fence near creek today. I packed chicken manure from under old kitchen and put on E side of garden in morn and helped Wiley to get a load of pine in pocket in Sims' corner (which I piled there for him) in eve.
Wed. 22nd. Cloudy and no sun and a damp wind from SE all day and night too. Willie and Ben worked on wire fence near creek till late in eve and finished all making our pasture hog proof. I hoed under all of manure on E side of garden (put there on yesterday and Monday) by 11 1/2 in morn and I found a brown hen setting on 7 eggs near Ben's house in eve and put them under a red hen in old cotton house.
Thu. 23rd. Warm and cloudy and a damp breeze from S all day and a thunder cloud came up from NW at 4 in eve and rained a hard shower till 4 1/2 and began to rain again at dark and lasted all night with some thunder and a big fall of water in all. Ben hauled all of pine piled in field by 2 in eve and wood till 4 and rain stopped him. I put the pine in pens on W side of new barn today and got wood for Millie to wash here early in morn..
Fri. 24th. We had a big fall of rain last night and some little this morn and some in eve and no sun today. Willie and Ben roped Frilby (colt) early in morn and worried with her till 10 in morn and Willie drove Sandy to town at 11 1/2 in morn and returned late in eve. I cut up good deal of wood in morn and walked in field just after dinner and brought some canes home to make blow guns. I made one for Marion and fed in eve.
Sat. 25th. Cloudy some but bright and sun shined some today and cool from NE. Willie worked the road just outside of big gate (in front) in morn and Ben hauled wood from field in morn. I made a blow gun for little Wiley early in morn and some arrows for him and Marion in morn and fed in eve. Willie went hunting with Lewis and Earl in eve.
Sun. 26th. Dark cloudy and cool from NE and began to rain slowly at 9 1/2 in morn and rained in hard thunder showers from SW at 10 1/2 to 2 in eve and slowly balance of eve and some at night from N - a big washing rain in all. Willie and Minnie and their children at Wiley's most of day. I got wood and water and fed in rain in eve and got nearly wet.
Mon. 27th. Wind from W of N and cloudy and chilly in morn and bright in eve and pleasant in sunshine. Willie and Ben cleaned up ground in field today. I cut up good deal of wood and fixed spring in morn and shucked corn and got wood and water and fed in eve.
Tue. 28th. Clear and a freeze and white frost in morn - but didn't seem to kill vegetation - and pleasant in sun after 10 in morn. Willie and Ben hauled wood from field today. I got a sack of pine straw from near Wiley's at 11 in morn after cutting good deal of wood and I set a black hen in cotton house.
Wed. 29th. Clear and frost in morn but calm and pleasant in sun after 10 in morn. Willie and Ben and Sam Woods and Dickie threshed peas all day. I got wood for Leah to wash here early in morn and cut up good deal of wood and fixed old barn to put pea hulls in in morn and rode Sandy in eve to hunt Daisy and Jersey (cows) but didn't find them.
Thu. 30th. Cloudy and very cool early in morn but a damp wind from S and warmer in eve and began to rain in little sprinkles at dusk and a thunder cloud came up from NW at 11 1/2 in night and rained good deal till 12 1/2 and turned cool from N. Willie and Ben and Sam Wood and Dickie threshed peas all day. I rode Sandy to Elmwood early in morn and drove up Daisy and Jersey and their calves by 10 and got wood and water by 12 and fed in eve.
Fri. 31st. We had a rain last night and bright and cold from N today and clear in eve and all night. Willie had a sick headache and vomiting last night and Willie and Ben and Sam W and Dickie threshed peas today in old kitchen and finished all but a little by dusk. I packed manure from under new barn to garden in morn and shucked corn and got wood and water and fed in eve.
