JANUARY 1901

Tue. Jan. 1st. Dark cloudy, and no sun, and wind from NE and E of N all day and chilly too and rained some little in night. I cut wood NW of Wiley's all morn and hauled 4 piling cart loads in eve, with Joe, (all beech wood). Willie cleared toward Luckett field part of day.

Wed. 2nd. Dark cloudy and chilly from E of N all day and night too and no sun and rained a little early in morn and some little early in night. Willie cut up logs toward Luckett field in morn and some in eve. Pa in house most of day. I walked to Wiley's in morn and cut up some wood. I am taking a cold in my head and it ached a little all day. Some hogs rooted into our cane ricks in orchard in morn and I recovered them with my hoe at 12 1/2 to 1 1/4 in eve and Willie and I cut and split some wood and a few rails toward Luckett field late in eve. Wiley went to his Pa's in eve to stay all night and Nellie stayed all night with Rena and baby.

Thu. 3rd. It cleared off about 9 1/2 in morn from W of N and a cold breeze from N all day but pleasant in sunshine in eve. Willie cut trees around his clearing at back of our field most of day and I packed locusts posts out of locust ground (which is cut down there) and cut some poles and packed out 2 to road in morn and I gathered and packed up some pine knots around Pine corner in eve. Rena and baby came home with Nellie early in morn and here till late in eve. Wiley returned from his Pa's in eve.

Fri. 4th. Bright but cloudy some all day and cold - a white frost and slight freeze in morn - and a breeze from N most of day. Willie and Wiley sawed red oak board timber toward Luckett field most of day. I rode Joe to Sims' early in morn and returned at 9 1/2 and I hauled 2 cart loads of oak wood from back of our field by 12 1/4 and 1 in eve and I hauled 1 load of beech wood from NW of Wiley's in eve too.

Sat. 5th. Bright and a white frost in morn but sun shined all day and pleasant after 10 in morn. Willie rode Dan and Wiley rode Goulden to town in morn and returned late in eve. William McCullouch was hung at 2 p.m. today. I drove Joe to cart to Cohen's at 9 in morn to 1 1/4 in eve and got a half bbl flour and 1 gal oil for Wiley and carried them on to Wiley's and I got 10 lbs coffee and some other things for us. I hauled 3/4 load of pine knots from Pine corner in eve and took Bernice with me. I walked to Lewis' at dusk and carried some papers and 1 letter to Miss Mollie Tucker.

Sun. 6th. Bright, but some clouds, and cool wind from S and sun shined most of day and pleasant in sunshine. Tom Veal here in morn and promised to hire his step-son to Willie. I walked to Wiley's and back in morn. Willie Kaigler and wife and little daughter here most of day and Joe Miller here too and got a hound pup. Willie and Minnie and Nellie walked to Wiley's late in eve and I milked and got wood and water.

Mon. 7th. Bright, but cloudy some all day and calm, and warmer than yesterday. Willie and Wiley sawed and split board and lathing timber all morn and cut logs and rafters all eve for the Negro house and I barked bolts of board timber all day toward Luckett field. Chalmers Morris and John Deloach came to Wiley's late in eve and Willie went hunting with them at night.

Tue. 8th. Bright, and cool early in morn but sun shined most of day, and pleasant after 10 in morn and calm. Willie rode Joe to Tom Veal's early in morn to see about his hand. Wiley and I hauled board timber at 9 1/2 to 12 in morn and again in eve from toward Luckett field with Lewis' wagon and the 2 mules and we hauled all of board and lathing timber and part of logs for the Negro house and put them by back gate of calf pasture. Willie walked to Clara's just after dinner and got the fro (?) and rived some boards in eve. Pa worked in hollow on W side of orchard today and yesterday cutting down bushes and briars. We kept the mules here at night. I had a dull headache all day but it got better at night but had it a little all night but slept well.

Wed. 9th. Bright, but cloudy some all day, and pleasant from S. Willie rived boards at back gate of calf pasture all day and Wiley and I hauled logs and rafters of Negro house (there) all morn and finished and we hauled locust posts and poles and some rails all eve from back of our field and put here in back yard. We hauled 5 loads in all in eve and left about another load. Wiley carried mules and wagon to Lewis' late in eve. Bernice here to dinner and Rena here all eve. Pa cut trees on W side of orchard in hollow most of day. The headache left me at noon.

Thu. 10th. Warm and cloudy all day, from W of S and no sun and thundered in W and NW most of day and began to rain in hard showers at dark and lasted all night. Willie rived boards all morn and till 3 in eve and Wiley and I barked pine poles and logs all morn and till 3 in eve for Negro house (at pasture gate) and a shower of rain stopped us then. B C came then and got a hound pup. Gussie came late in eve and stayed here all night.

Fri. 11th. Dark cloudy and no sun and rained slowly most of day from E of N till in eve and from W of N late in eve and chilly some and rain ceased at dark. We were in house most of day. I made a new lowells bridle on Pa's gallery in morn and I walked to Wiley's in eve and drove Joe home and kept him in stable all night. Willie and I cut up wood and milked and fed in a slow rain in eve and got nearly wet. Gussie rode to Lewis' late in eve to stay all night.

Sat. 12th. Bright and sun shined most of day, but some clouds all day, and chilly from N. Willie rived boards and Wiley barked poles for Negro house all morn and Willie rode Dan to town and back in eve by sunset. I rode Joe to Cohen's in morn and returned at 11 1/2 and was cold all morn and I hauled 2 piling cart loads of beech wood from NW of Wiley's in eve and I carried 6 pieces of meat to Wiley's to be smoked. Pa walked to Clara's and back in eve.

Sun. 13th. Bright, and frost in morn - and cold in shade all day but sun shined most of day and pleasant in sunshine after 10 in morn. Wiley drove his Leggett horse to his Pa's in morn and brought Doug back with him (to work this year) late in eve. I walked to Wiley's in morn and Rena and baby came back with me at 9 in morn and here till late in eve. Willie and Minnie walked to Seymour's and back in eve.

Mon. 14th. Bright, nearly clear, and frost in morn - but sun shined all day and wind from SW and pleasant after 10 in morn. Willie rode Dan to Tom Veal's early in morn and Jim Williams signed contract to work here this year. Wiley rived boards and Doug and I barked pine logs for Negro house and we finished logs and boards by 11 in morn and Wiley and Willie laid foundation by 12 and they put up body of house in eve. I walked and hunted our hogs in eve, toward Veal's, but came back and found them E of here and put them into calf pasture. We want to kill 3 of them as soon as we can.

Tue. 15th. Bright and chilly early in morn but wind from S and cloudy in eve and a damp W of S breeze and warmer. Wiley and Willie and Doug worked on the Negro house all day and got part of roof on it. I rode Joe to Cohen's early in morn and got 28 lbs of nails for Wiley and Willie and 10 for myself for $1.60 and some calico for Minnie and I returned at 10 1/2 in morn and carried the nails to the Negro house. Clara sent for Nellie in morn (she is sick in bed) and Nellie returned late in eve - Clara seemed better. I hauled 3 piling cart loads of wood (mostly oak) from back of our field in eve with Joe.

Wed. 16th. Dark cloudy and warm from SW and sprinkled rain early in morn and again at 1 in eve and changed to NW at 3 in eve and showered some then and again after dark from NW. Wiley and Willie and Doug worked on Negro house all day and finished roof and sawed out fireplace and door and 1 window and sealed most of cracks. Pa cut down cotton stalks with a cane knife in Gate cut today and yesterday too. I hauled 3 piling cart loads of wood in morn and 1 in eve from back of our field and rain stopped me at 3 in eve.

Thu. 17th. Bright, nearly clear, and quite cool from NW and wind high most of eve from NW and cold and clear and calm at night. Wiley and Doug and Willie and I killed and dressed and salted down 3 young sows and last of our hogs, except one - the bob tail sow which we saved for a brood sow and we finished by 12 1/4. Wiley hunted and found and drove up Ocean's spotted heifer with a young calf in eve and Willie and Doug worked on Negro house part of eve. Pa cut cotton stalks most of day in Gate cut and Persimmon cut. I rode Joe to Seymour's in eve and carried some fresh meat and some potatoes. Rena and Bernice here all day and I carried Bernice home late in eve.

Fri. 18th. Clear and a pretty hard freeze and frost in morn but calm and pleasant in sunshine in eve. Doug and I packed the big kettle to Wiley's early in morn and we hunted Wiley's hogs most of morn and part of eve and Wiley and Doug found them near Ash spring in eve and drove them home and put them in Wiley's lot. I dined at Wiley's and I got a sk of bark in calf pasture and cut up wood and helped Wiley to get hogs in his lot in eve. Willie and Minnie walked to Clara's in eve and she is up and better today.

Sat. 19th. Bright and cold early in morn - a white frost and light freeze - but pleasant in sunshine after 10 in morn. Willie and I walked to Wiley's early in morn and we killed and salted down 3 young hogs for Wiley by 10 1/2 and Aunt Margaret cooked the lard today. Willie and Minnie drove the Leggett horse to Mrs. James' in eve. I hauled 2 cart loads of beech wood from NW of Wiley's in eve with Joe. Pa walked to Clara's and back in eve. Nellie went to Wiley's at dusk and stayed till 8 1/4 - Rena is sick.

Sun. 20th. Bright, frost in morn, but a breeze from S or SE and pleasant in sunshine after 10 in morn and some clouds. Wiley brought Bernice early in morn and they ate breakfast and dinner too here and Bernice here till in eve. Rena is still too sick to cook. Nellie at Wiley's awhile in morn and most of eve. Gordon and Tigner here in eve awhile. Willie and Minnie returned from Mrs. James' at sunset and both walked to Wiley's and back by deep dusk and Nellie stayed there all night.

Mon. 21st. Cloudy and warmer and sprinkled rain from SW at 10 in morn and bright till 4 1/2 in eve and rained in slow showers at 4 1/2 to 7 1/4 at night. Jim Williams came early in morn to work for the year and he and Willie and I went to Wiley's and we helped to catch and put 4 young sows into wagon (for Wiley) and Doug drove Jim and mare mule to Lewis' wagon to town and carried the hogs to Fosselman and Wiley rode Leggett and got 160 ft of plank for Negro house. Jim and I hauled 2 cart loads of wood from back of our field at 10 1/2 to 12 1/4 in morn and Willie rode Dan to Cohen's at 10 1/2 to 12 1/2 and he and Jim worked on Negro house in eve and I hauled 2 cart loads of locust posts and poles and 1 load of short stakes from back of our field in eve with Joe. Pa cut and threshed cotton stalks in Persimmon cut most of day. Nellie at Wiley's all day and night too - Rena is still sick.

Tue. 22nd. Warm and cloudy and damp all morn and bright in eve and calm. Wiley and Willie and Doug and Jim and I worked on chimney of Negro house most of day and we got up fireplace and some little of funnel. Nellie at Wiley's all day and night too - Rena seems better today but still in bed. Pa threshed and cut down stalks in field most of day. I walked to Wiley's at 6 1/2 to 7 3/4 at night.

Wed. 23rd. Foggy in morn early but bright and warm after 9 1/2 in morn. We worked on chimney of Negro house most of day and finished it by 3 1/2 in eve and worked on door and window late in eve. Nellie at Wiley's all day and night too - Rena seems beter today but still in bed. Pa cut stalks in field most of day.

Thu. 24th. Cloudy and began to rain in little showers in morn from W and we had a hard one at 9 1/4 from NW and another one at 12 and nearly clear and a cool breeze from N all eve. Wiley and Willie finished Negro house in morn and Willie and Jim burned brush in locust thicket at back of our field all eve. I divided the new boards left at Negro house early in morn (950) and hauled 475 here to cover a hen house and hauled the other 475 to Wiley's with Joe and cart by 12 and I resalted most meat in cotton house and shucked some breadcorn in eve and I walked to Wiley's at 6 1/2 to 7 3/4 at night - Rena seems better but still in bed. Pa walked to Clara's early in morn and returned late in eve - Clara is a little better.

Fri. 25th. Bright and very cool early in morn and wind from N and dry. Pa cut cotton stalks in field most of day and Willie and Jim burned brush at back of our field all day. I cut a tall oak just NE of orchard early in morn and cut off 2 cuts and split up and made lathing for a hen house and hauled all of it in 2 cart loads by 11 1/2. I shucked and shelled bread corn in eve and Willie and Jim shelled nearly an hour just after dinner and I finished corn (3 bu) at 2 3/4 and walked to Negro house and brought tools home. Rena sat up some today. Nellie there all day and night too.

Sat. 26th. Cloudy some, but bright and very cool early in morn, but wind from SE and warmer in eve. Willie and Jim burned off new ground at back of our field all morn and Jim went home in eve. I led Joe to cart to Primm place early in morn and carried 3 bu corn for us and 3 pks for Wiley and returned at 11 1/4 with meal and I cut up wood till 12. Pa walked to Clara's and back in eve. Willie rode Joe to Cohen's in eve and I barked and sawed off 4 locust posts for hen shed. Wiley went to town and saw young Dr. Lev M about Rena and got some medicine for her in eve. Nellie still at Wiley's.

Sun. 27th. Cloudy and sprinkled rain from NW at 7 1/2 to 8 1/2 in morn and turned cooler and clear and cool and wind from N after 10 in morn. I walked to Wiley's at 9 to 10 in morn and Wiley came back with me and got a little chicken for Nellie to cook for Rena. Buddy and Gordon here to dinner and they went to Wiley's in eve. I walked to Wiley's at 2 and Bernice and I walked creek. Rena still in bed and sick today from effects of medicine and Nellie there all day and night too.

Mon. 28th. Bright, nearly clear, and a little frost in morn, and cool and dry from W all day. Willie and Jim burned in new ground at back of our field and in Luckett field all day and Pa threshed and cut stalks in field most of day. I walked to Wiley's early in morn and brought our old ladder home and I took the roof off old hen house and set 4 locust posts in ground to build a shed on for chickens by 12 and we moved plates and rafters from old house (whole) and put on posts at 1 1/4 and I nailed lathing to posts and plates for braces in eve. Rena is still in bed but seems better and Nellie still there.

Tue. 29th. Cloudy and warm and a damp breeze from W of S all day and rained some in N. Pa threshed stalks in Luckett field most of day and Willie and Jim cleaned and burned off new ground near Luckett field all day. Aunt Margaret washed in morn and I got water and wood for her and I worked on chicken shed most of day. I got all of lathing and 1 course of boards on. I walked to Wiley's and back after supper. Rena sat up some today. Nellie still there.

Wed. 30th. We had some hard showers of rain at 4 to 6 in morn and wind from W of N and very cool and cloudy and no sun all day. Pa threshed stalks in Luckett field today and Willie and Jim cut sprouts on Estina branch all day. I covered on chicken shed most of day and got most of it covered. I had a dull headache most of day but it left me late in eve. I walked to Wiley's and back after night. Rena is still in bed and Nellie still there.

Thu. 31st. Clear, and a white frost, and a slight freeze in morn and a cold wind from N most of day but pleasant in sunshine in eve. Pa threshed stalks in Luckett field most of day and Willie and Jim cut trees and briars there most of day. I finished covering hen shed by 12 1/4 and didn't get to work in eve. Bank Fugler and Mrs. Hughes came at 1 1/2 and Bank went to Seymour's late in eve and Mrs. H staid here at night. Rena seems better today but Nellie still there.
