AUGUST 1917

Wed. Aug. 1st. Bright and warm till 1 in eve and clouded up and we had a good rain at 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 which wet ground pretty well and much needed too. Dud and Sidney hoed cotton in morn and finished and didn't work in eve. Willie and Marion dipped cattle at Thompson's in morn. I hoed around 2 fig trees and 5 peach trees in patch E of here in morn. Speigle ate supper here and preached at SS at night.

Thu. 2nd. Bright and very warm in morn and a thunder cloud came up from NE at 2 1/2 in eve and we had a good soaking rain till late in eve. I hoed around peach trees out E of here in morn. Willie drove Daisie to town in eve for Sarah Percy and Carmel and they came on night train about midnight.

Fri. 3rd. Bright and warm till 3 in eve and clouded up then from NW and we had a big washing rain till 5 1/2 with some thunder. I hoed peach trees out E of here in morn. Wiley here in eve while it was raining.

Sat. 4th. Bright and warm all morn and cloudy all eve and rained around some in eve but only dropped a little here. Willie and Marion dipped cattle early in morn and Willie drove Daisie to town in morn and returned at 2 in eve with some ice and we had ice cream in eve. Wiley and family and Nora and Clarence and Sarah Percy all here.

Sun. 5th. Bright and warm in morn and cloudy and rained around some in thundershowers at 12 to 4 in eve but none here. Willie and Minnie drove Daisie to church (Methodist) in town in morn and Bro W.M. Sullivan there and again at night and Carmel and Bernice and Sarah Percy and Marion and little Wiley all went at night.

Mon. 6th. Bright and warm most of day. It rained around far off in thundershowers some in eve. I hoed Irish potatoes in old garden in morn. Dud and Sidney didn't work today.

Tue. 7th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. Willie and Marion scraped Irish potatoes in patch N of here. I hoed Irish potatoes in old garden in morn and finished them.

Wed. 8th. Bright and quite warm and no rain in sight. Willie and Dud and Marion hoed Irish potatoes in patch N of here in morn and finished them. I hoed late beans in new garden in morn. Marion and Carmel and Sarah Percy drove Sandy to Dick Chambers' in eve.

Thu. 9th. Bright and warm (very) till late in eve and thundered around at 6 to 8 and a thunder cloud passed around E from NE at 8 1/2 and a big rain and hail in town but we only had a good shower here till 9. Dud cut down a dead pecan tree in SW corner of flower yard and I helped him to cut up the limbs for wood in morn. Nellie and Minnie went in Wiley's buggy and Marion and Bernice and Sarah Percy went in our buggy to Methodist church in town at night.

Fri. 10th. Bright but cloudy some and thundered and rained around some in eve but none here. Willie drove Daisie to town early in morn and carried Sarah Percy to take train for home and Carmel went with them. I hoed in old garden in morn.

Sat. 11th. Bright and warm in morn and rained around some in eve and we had a little shower here at 4 in eve. I hoed tomatoes in field in morn. Willie and Dud drove Daisie to town in eve.

Sun. 12th. Bright and warm most of day and no rain here but a thunder cloud NE of here at dusk. Willie and Minnie and children walked to SS in eve and Nellie to Wiley's.

Mon. 13th. Bright and warm till late in eve and a thunder cloud came up near from SE but no rain here. Dud and Sam and Henry cut briars and weeds in pasture today. Willie took Maud Est to Ogden's and she took horse in morn. I hoed up old mustard in old garden in morn.

Tue. 14th. Bright and very warm all day and a shower in sight in SE at 3 in eve but only dropped a little here. Dud and Sam and Henry cut briars and weeds in pasture today. Marion picked cotton today and yesterday too. I hoed on W side of new garden in morn.

Wed. 15th. Bright and very warm all day and night too and no rain here but a little just S of here at 2 1/2 in eve. Willie and Marion dipped cattle at Elmwood in morn and Willie and I shucked some bread corn in eve. Dud and Sam and Henry cut briars and weeds in pasture today. I hoed in new garden on W side in morn.

Thu. 16th. Bright and very warm all day and night too and no rain here but thundered around in eve. Dud and Sam and Henry cut briars and weeds in pasture. Marion picked cotton. I hoed in new garden on W side of it in morn. Willie shucked and shelled some bread corn today and I shelled some in eve.

Fri. 17th. Bright and very warm all morn and a thunder cloud came up from N at 2 in eve and passed around E of here but we had a pretty good rain here and much needed too and cloudy all eve. Willie and Marion picked cotton in morn. Dud and Sam and Henry cut briars and weeds in pasture today. I hoed in new garden on W side in morn and finished hoeing last of it.

Sat. 18th. Bright and warm till 11 in morn and a rain cloud came up from NW and we had a good rain at 12 1/2 to 1. Willie and Marion dipped cattle early in morn and Willie drove Daisie to town at 9 1/2 in morn and returned at 1. Dud drove a wagon to town early in morn and carried 1 bbl of corn and returned just as rain began at 12 1/4. Marion and I brought 2 watermelons from field at 10 1/2 in morn.

Sun. 19th. Bright till 2 in eve and we had a good shower here at 2 in eve from NW and bright late in eve. Gordon dined here. Willie and Minnie and Carmel and Marion went to SS in eve after the rain and Bro Ellis preached there.

Mon. 20th. Bright and warm in morn and we had a big rain at 2 to 3 in eve from NW. Willie and Dud and Marion marked our calves early in morn and hoed in sugar cane balance of morn and didn't work in eve. I hoed over all of Irish potatoes in old garden in morn.

Tue. 21st. Bright and warm till late in eve and a thunder cloud passed around W from NW and we had a little shower here. Dud and Henry cut and split pine wood in back of field today. Marion and Carmel drove Daisie to town in morn and brought Lois Ellis back with them just before the rain. Willie and I brought some watermelons from field in morn.

Wed. 22nd. Bright and warm all day and a thunder cloud blew up here from N at dusk and we had a big rain with some hail and thunder till 8 and rained again in night. Dud and Henry cut pine wood. Willie and Sophia picked some cotton in eve. I hoed late beans in new garden in morn.

Thu. 23rd. Bright and warm and no rain here but a thunder cloud in sight in N and E. Willie and I worked road in field in morn. Marion and little Wiley drove Hal to town at 10 in morn and brought some ice and we had cream in eve and Ed Ogden and Henry and Lanehart's children and Wiley and family all here.

Fri. 24th. Bright, nearly clear, and wind from N and no rain in sight. I hoed tomatoes in field in morn. Willie picked cotton in eve. Marion drove Daisie to town in eve and carried Carmel and Lois Ellis and came back by himself and Daisie ran away and broke buggy and hurt Marion some.

Sat. 25th. Bright, nearly clear, and wind from N and no rain in sight. I hoed some in old garden in morn and Charles and Carl and I walked in pasture and found a few muscadines. Wiley drove his buggy to town in eve and pulled our buggy behind his to shop to be mended. Willie rode Daisie.

Sun. 26th. Bright, nearly clear, and wind from N and no rain in sight. I felt feverish and bad all day and night too. Willie and Carmel amd Marion and Charles and Carl walked to SS in eve.

Mon. 27th. Bright and wind from NE and no rain in sight. Willie and Marion and Charles and Sophie picked cotton today. Dud ran cultivator in Irish potatoes in patch N of here and plowed them out today. I hoed dirt off Irish potato rows in old garden and hoed late beans in new garden in morn.

Tue. 28th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight but lightning in SW before day in morn. Willie and Marion and Dud and Sophie picked cotton today and left it in field. I patched up gate on S side of cow pen early in morn and brought 2 canteloupes and 1 watermelon from field by 10 in morn.

Wed. 29th. Bright till 11 1/2 in morn and a thunder cloud came up then from NW and we had a good little rain till 12 1/4 - and needed too - and cloudy some all eve. Willie and Marion dipped cattle at Elmwood in morn and returned just before rain at 11 1/4. Dud and Sophie picked cotton in morn. I hoed some in new garden early in morn and let Ed Wells have pears by 10 1/2 and Fayette Linton have some in eve.

Thur. 30th. Cloudy in morn and rained a little shower at 9 in morn and bright balance of day but thundered far off most of day. Willie and Dud got up mules early in morn and hauled in all of cotton picked before rain and they picked in eve. I sowed some cucumber a
