Sat. Aug. 1st. Cloudy some all morn and we had a slow sprinkle of rain at 7 in morn and another at 9 1/2 but not enough to lay dust well and bright after 10 1/2 in morn. Dud finished plowing slips in oat patch N of here in morn. Willie drove Sandy to town in morn and returned at 11 1/2. I hoed in pindars till 9 1/2 in morn and rain stopped me.
Sun. 2nd. Bright and warm in morn and cloudy all eve and thundered far off. All of us home today but Carmel and Charles -they dined at Wiley's. Willie and Minnie and Carmel and Marion walked to SS in eve. Sandy was sick late in eve and till 8 1/2 in night and got better.
Mon. 3rd. Cloudy and a damp wind from NW all morn and a thunder cloud passed around S from W at 3 in eve but only sprinkled a little here and a thunder cloud came up from N at 11 1/2 at night and we had a good rain with a good deal of thunder till 12 1/2 and another one at 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 in morn and a big washing rain in all with good deal of thunder. Willie and Dud helped Lewis to turn around the school house today. I hoed in pindars in morn and picked some green and dry butter beans in eve.
Tue. 4th. It rained till after daylight in morn and bright most of day. Dud cut briars in pasture today and Willie didn't work much. Marion and I rode Sandy to watermelon patch in morn and brought home 2 melons and some tomatoes and I sent 1/2 bu tomatoes to Mrs. Lanehart by Marion (on Sandy). I burned lice at 10 1/2 to 12.
Wed. 5th. Bright and warm most of day and rained a hard shower at 10 at night. Dud cut briars in cow pasture. Willie worked at school house in morn and he and Lewis hauled some plank from saw mill to school house in eve. I thinned some beans in garden and brought some tomatoes from field in morn.
Thu. 6th. Bright and warm till 3 in eve and rained around near in thunder showers at 3 1/2 to 4 1/2 but none here. Dud cut briars in pasture today. Willie worked at school house today. I hoed some beans in garden after getting wood and water for Leah to wash and Marion and I brought 2 watermelons and some tomatoes from field in morn and I gave Buddy 2 melons to take home. I had fever in morn and took Livertone and lay on bed part of day. Mrs. Mathis and Joe came at 11 in morn and she here all night.
Fri. 7th. Cloudy some all day but no rain here. Dud cut briars in pasture today. Willie worked at school house in morn and he and Lewis hauled some plank to school house in eve from saw mill. Carmel and Carl rode on Mrs. Mathis' horse in morn to melon patch and brought home 2 melons by 9 in morn and I brought some tomatoes.
Sat. 8th. It began to drop rain slowly at daylight in morn and lasted till 8 1/2 and rained pretty hard till 11 and quit but cloudy some all eve. Willie got Wiley's surry early in morn to go to Mrs. James' but he and Minnie and children left at 2 in eve to go there. I chipped some pine and cut up some wood early in morn and got wood and water and fed and milked in eve and Nellie helped me.
Sun. 9th. Bright but cloudy some all day but only dropped rain here today. I rode Sandy in field and brought home 3 melons and some tomatoes and carried 2 melons and some tomatoes to Wiley's by 9 1/2 in morn and returned at 11. Willie and Minnie and children returned from Mrs. James' at sunset. I milked most of cows late in eve.
Mon. 10th. Bright and warm and no rain here but thundered around in eve some. Willie helped on school house in morn and they finished there. Dud cut briars in cow pasture today. I hoed in garden till 9 1/2 in morn and Marion and Carmel and I packed 2 melons and a bucket of tomatoes from field by 10 1/2. Mrs. Mathis and Joe dined and left for home in eve. I shelled some dry butter beans and put a handle in Charles' little ax in eve.
Tue. 11th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight but thundered far off in eve. Willie and Marion and Dud hauled a load of melons from field early in morn and hauled 3 loads of wood from cow pasture by 11 1/4 and Dud cut briars in pasture in eve and Willie barred off Irish potatoes in oat ground N of here in eve with Julia. I hoed in garden in morn and patched 2 coops in eve.
Wed. 12th. Bright and warm and no rain but thundered around some late in eve. Willie and Dud scraped the Irish potatoes in patch N of here today and finished late in eve. I hoed pepper and planted some mustard in Sims' bottom in morn.
Thu. 13th. Bright and warm till 3 in eve and rained around near in thunder showers from S but none here. Willie and Dud cut briars in cow pasture today. I hoed in garden in morn and I got wood and water and fed in eve.
Fri. 14th. Bright and warm till late in eve and a thunder cloud came up from SW at dusk and we had a good hard rain (and needed too) at 7 to 9 at night. Dud cut briars in cow pasture today. Willie drove Sandy to town early in morn and brought Sims back with him at 12 and Sims here all eve and night. I hoed in garden in morn and put 2 new bolts in little cornmill in eve.
Sat. 15th. Bright and warm till 4 in eve and clouded up from NW with some thunder and rained here slowly at 6 1/2 to 9 at night. Willie and Sims dined at Wiley's and Willie drove Sandy to town in eve and took Sims there. Marion rode Sandy to Lanehart's early in morn and carried about 6 p'ks of pears. I walked in field and brought home some tomatoes by 10 3/4 in morn.
Sun. 16th. Bright and warm till 4 in eve and clouded up then from W with some thunder and rained slowly here at 6 to 8 1/2 at night. Willie and Minnie and Carmel and Marion and Charles went to SS in eve and Bro Ellis preached there. Gordon came late in eve and here all night.
Mon. 17th. Bright and warm till 3 in eve and clouded up from SW then and rained around some but only dropped a little here. Willie and Dud cut briars in cow pasture today. I planted some turnips in SE corner of garden in morn and brought in some tomatoes from field by 11 and I put a plank bottom in a rocking chair in eve.
Tue. 18th. Bright and warm till 11 1/2 in morn and sprinkled rain here at 11 1/2 to 12 and most of eve slowly and rained hard E and N of here, not far off, with thunder at 2 to 4. Willie and Dud cut briars in cow pasture in morn. I hoed in garden awhile in morn. Miss Ellen Deloach here most of day and Rena and children too in eve.
Wed. 19th. Bright and warm in morn and rained around in thunder showers in eve but only sprinkled here some. Willie and Dud cut briars in pasture most of day. I gathered some pears early in morn and sent 6 p'ks to Dixie by Marion (on Sandy) and 3 p'ks to Rena by Buddy and I hoed some in garden and brought some tomatoes from field.
Thu. 20th. Bright and warm all day and no rain near but far off late in eve. Willie and Dud cut briars in pasture today. I planted 7 short rows of turnips in N part of garden in morn and Marion and I brought 3 melons from patch by 10 1/4.
Fri. 21st. Bright and warm in morn and rained around near in thunder showers most of eve but only sprinkled some here. Willie sick and didn't work today. Dud cut briars in pasture in morn and didn't work in eve. I gathered 3 p'ks of pears early in morn and sent them by Marion (on Sandy) to Cousin Mary at 1 1/2 in eve. Ed Wells came with a wagon in morn and got 3 1/2 bus. of late pears and owes $1.35 on them.
Sat. 22nd. Bright and warm most of day but rained around in thunder showers some in eve but only dropped a little here. Willie took Gordon on buggy to town in morn to go to Lewis Miller's. Carmel went in Surry with Wiley to town in morn and had a tooth filled. I planted 8 short rows of turnips in N part of garden and packed 5 turns of stable manure and put in water furrows in morn.
Sun. 23rd. Bright and warm till 1 in eve and a thunder cloud came up from W then and we had a good shower. Buddy and wife and their 2 children came in morn and left late in eve. No SS in eve on account of rain.
Mon. 24th. Bright and warm till 12 and a thunder cloud came up then from SW and we had a good rain and bright all eve. Willie and Minnie put up new paper in our front room today. I shucked and shelled some bread corn in morn and gathered some small pears out NW of cow pen in eve.
Tue. 25th. Bright and warm all morn and rained around near in thunder showers most of eve but only sprinkled slowly here late in eve. Dud cut briars in pasture today. Willie and Minnie papered our front room today and finished it late in eve. I packed some stable manure in garden and planted 7 rows of turnips in N part in morn and brought some tomatoes from field and made a little box and put on 2 iron wheels for Charles by 2 in eve and shucked and shelled some bread corn by 4 1/2.
Wed. 26th. Bright and warm till 3 in eve and a thunder cloud came up from SE at 5 and we had a hard shower till 5 1/2 and slowly till dark. Dud ran cultivator in Irish potatoes in N part of old orchard and plowed them out by 5 in eve. Willie pulled some boat corn in patch E of here and piled it there in eve. I set out some winter onions in NW corner of garden by 9 in morn and let Wells have 2 bus of pears by 10 1/2. Bernice and Thelma here all night.
Thu. 27th. Bright and warm till 3 in eve and rained around in thunder showers some in eve but only sprinkled here. Willie and Dud sawed down a red oak out NW of here in morn for pickets but it was only fit for wood and they sawed up part of tree. I set out some button onions in N part of garden early in morn and sold 1 bu of pears to woman and packed some corn to patch E of here.
Fri. 28th. Bright and warm in morn and a thunder cloud came up from W at 11 1/2 and we had a hard shower till 12 1/4 and cloudy some all eve. Willie and Dud got out picket timbers out NW of here today. I hoed some beans in garden and brought home some tomatoes from field in morn.
Sat. 29th. Bright and warm most of day and no rain near today. Willie drove Sandy to town in morn and returned at 12 1/2. Dago drove Ned and Ella to town in morn and carried nearly 7 p'ks of corn for us and returned at 12 1/4 with the meal. I cut up some wood early in morn and packed in 7 turns of boat corn from patch E of here (which Willie pulled down) by 10 and shucked all of the corn by 11.
