Thu. Aug. 1st. A thundercloud came up from NE at 3 1/2 in morn and we had a good rain till 5 1/2 (and needed very much) with a great deal of thunder but no wind and bright most of day and warm. Willie and Ben didn't work today. Ben's time is up by the month. Marion rode Josie to Pine hollow and brought home 2 watermelons and I packed 3 pecks of tomatoes and went back and packed 3 more pecks and Nellie and Minnie put them up in jars in eve.
Fri. 2nd. Bright and warm most of day but rained around in thunder showers some in eve and we had a good little one at 1 1/2 in eve. Willie and Ben didn't work today. I brought watermelons and tomatoes from Pine hollow and gathered figs for Clarence and Carrie and hoed some pepper in garden in morn and brought in some boat corn and saved some tomatoe seed in eve.
Sat. 3rd. Bright and quite warm till 11 1/2 in morn and rained around in thunder showers balance of day and we had a good one at 7 1/2 in eve and bright balance of eve. Willie drove Sandy to town in morn and returned at 1 in eve. I brought 2 watermelons and some tomatoes from Pine hollow early in morn and helped Steve and Ernest to gather figs and hoed some pepper in garden till 10 1/2 and I gathered about 3 pecks of pears from Marion's tree in garden and brought in some boat corn in eve.
Sun. 4th. Cloudy and cool from N till 12 and bright and pleasant all eve from N and no rain in sight today. Nellie and Marion at Wiley's most of day. I brought in 2 watermelons and some tomatoes from patch early in morn and carried a big bucket of them to Wiley's and returned at 11 1/4. Minnie and Charles walked to Lewis' in eve.
Mon. 5th. Clear and cool from W of N and pleasant in sun all day but lightning from NW at night. Ben chopped in pasture today and Willie in morn too but Willie rode Sandy to Mrs. Jno. Morris in eve and he returned at dusk and drove Wiley's team and surrey and carried Lila and Edna to town at night to meet Cousin Mary. They brought her up from New Orleans where she has been for a month. I hoed on W side of garden in morn and picked some dry pole beans in eve and brought in some boat corn and fed.
Tue. 6th. Bright and cool early in morn but warm after 10 in morn and cloudy some late in eve. Willie and Ben chopped in pasture today. I brought in 2 watermelons and some tomatoes early in morn and hoed on W side of garden till 11 and made a grater out of 1/2 well bucket in eve and brought in boat corn and fed. Nellie at Lewis' all day and Minnie there in eve.
Wed. 7th. Bright and warm till 1 in eve and a thunder cloud came up from SW then and we had a little shower and bright most of eve. Willie and Ben chopped in pasture today. I hoed in garden most of morn and brought in some boat corn and fed in eve.
Thu. 8th. Bright and warm till 11 in morn and rained around in thunder showers most of eve and we had a little one at 12 and another one late in eve. Nellie at Lewis' most of day - Cousin Mary had a bad spell in morn but was better in eve. I hoed in NE corner (part of strawberry bed) in morn. Cousin Gus and wife and little Jim came to Lewis' in morn and Gus dined here and Willie walked to Lewis' with him at 3 in eve. Willie and I milked at dusk after the rain.
Fri. 9th. Cloudy some all morn and a thunder cloud came up from N of W at 1 1/2 in eve and we had a good hard shower with some wind and bright most of eve. Willie and Ben and Lucy and I packed 60 watermelons out of patch in Pine hollow to road early in morn (to sell on tomorrow) and I rode Josie to Lanehart's and carried 2 1/2 pecks of tomatoes and some pears by 11 3/4. I packed in some corn and fed in eve.
Sat. 10th. Warm and cloudy and began to rain in thunder showers from SW at 10 to 12 in morn and lasted balance of day and we had a good soaking rain in all and needed too. Willie and Lewis drove Sandy to town in morn and Ben drove Ned and Julia to wagon and carried 60 watermelons for us and Lewis sold them and they returned late in eve in a slow rain. I hoed up part of strawberry bed in garden by 10 in morn.
Sun. 11th. Bright and warm most of day and no rain here but a thunder cloud passed around from W at 1 1/2 in eve. Wiley went to his Pa's in morn and Rena and children here most of day. Nellie at Lewis' most of day - Cousin Mary seemed worse today but easier in eve. Dr. Magruder out to see her in morn.
Mon. 12th. Bright and warm most of day but a thunder cloud passed around S of here from SE at 2 to 3 in eve and near but only dropped a little here. Willie and Ben chopped in pasture today and Lucy scraped some in Irish potatoes E of here. I hoed and picked grass out of strawberries in garden in morn. I packed in corn and fed in eve.
Tue. 13th. Bright and warm till 2 in eve and cloudy most of eve and a thunder cloud passed around just N of here from E at sunset but only sprinkled a little here. Willie and Ben chopped in pasture today and Lucy finished scraping Irish potatoes in patch E of here. I brought in 2 watermelons and tomatoes from Pine hollow and brought in 4 sacks of corn from H ridge and shelled 1 bu of it and put it out to dry by 11 1/2 and picked some dry pole beans in hollow E of here in eve.
Wed. 14th. Bright and warm till 2 in eve and rained around in thunder showers some in eve from SE but only dropped here. Willie and Ben chopped in pasture today. I brought in 2 watermelons and some tomatoes from Pine hollow and put out corn to sun and picked grass out of strawberries in morn and found 2 hens' nests in eve and fed.
Thu. 15th. Bright and warm till 11 in morn and we had a hard little shower then and cloudy all eve and rained around in thundershowers most of eve but none here. Ben broke up watermelon patch in Pine hollow in morn and we packed out most of watermelons (62 in all) to road and Willie and Ben and Lucy planted the patch in potatoes by 3 in eve. Willie and Marion went hunting squirrels late in eve and Ben went fishing.
Fri. 16th. Bright and warm till 3 1/2 in eve and rained around some in eve but none here. Willie rode Sandy and Ben drove Julia and Ella to wagon to town in morn and carried 60 watermelons and sold out and returned at 3 1/2 in eve. I got wood and water for Lucy to wash here early in morn and cut up good deal of wood and brought in 2 watermelons and some tomatoes from patch and grated some meal and sunned some breadcorn in morn.
Sat. 17th. Bright and warm and dry and no rain here but thundered far off some in eve. Willie drove the mules to Wiley's surrey to Mrs. James' (Carmel and Marion went too) in morn for Mrs. Johnson and her 2 children but one of them was sick and she didn't come and Willie and children returned at dark. I cut up wood and brought in 2 watermelons and some tomatoes from Pine hollow in morn and packed in some corn and picked some dry butter beans in eve.
Sun. 18th. Bright and quite warm till late in eve and rained around in thunder showers then but only dropped here a little. Carmel and I walked to Lewis' in morn and carried a big bucket of tomatoes and returned at 11. Buddy and wife here most of day. I walked to Wiley's and back in eve.
Mon. 19th. Bright and warm most of day and no rain here but rained around in thunder showers some in eve. Willie and Ben hoed down weeds in pasture today. Marion and Lucy picked whip peas in patch E of here today. Carmel and I brought in 2 watermelons and some tomatoes and snap beans from Pine hollow by 9 in morn and I let Ed Wells have 1 bu of late pears by 10 and sent some beans and tomatoes to Mrs. Lanehart by Marion and picked some dry pole beans and brought in a sack of corn in eve.
Tue. 20th. Bright and very warm till 1 in eve and rained around in thunder showers at 1 1/2 to 3 but only sprinkled a little here and cloudy all eve. Willie and Ben cut down small trees on NW side of orchard today and Lucy picked whip peas in patch E of here. I hoed late tomatoes in Pine hollow and tied some of them to the stakes in morn and I brought in some corn and brought in 2 turns of little pears from hollow in orchard in eve.
Wed. 21st. Bright and very warm in morn and a thunder cloud passed around SE of here from E at 2 in eve, but none here, and cloudy all eve. Willie and Minnie drove Sandy to buggy to Mrs. James' in morn to stay till tomorrow. Ben and Lucy and Marion picked whip peas in patch E of here today. I brought in 2 watermelons and some tomatoes from Pine hollow and let Ed Wells have 3 bu more of pears. He got 1 bu on last Mon. and still owes me $1.25 on them. I brought in some corn and 2 turns of pears from hollow in orchard in eve and fed and helped Nellie to milk.
Thu. 22nd. Bright and very warm and dry and no rain but thundered far off most of day. Ben and Lucy picked whip peas in patch E of here today. I brought in 2 watermelons from Pine hollow and some tomatoes and beans too early in morn and I carried some tomatoes and pears to Mrs. Lanehart and returned at 11 1/4 and I brought in some corn in eve and patched a pair of pants and fed. Willie and Minnie returned from Mrs. James' at 5 3/4 in eve.
Fri. 23rd. Bright and very warm and dry till 3 1/2 in eve and cloudy and thunder in SW balance of eve but no rain here. Ben and his brother, Joe, picked peas in patch E of here today. I got wood and water for Lucy to wash here early in morn and hoed up ground in garden till 11 and I picked some dry pole and butter beans in eve.
Sat. 24th. Bright and warm till 2 in eve and we had a little shower then and bright balance of eve. Willie drove Sandy to town in morn and returned at 12 1/2 with some ice and we had ice cream in eve. Wiley took all of his family to his Pa's in morn and he came back at 3 1/2 in eve. Ben and Joe picked peas in patch E of here in morn. I hoed in garden most of morn.
Sun. 25th. Bright and warm till 12 and a thunder cloud came up from NW at 1 and we had a good rain till 2 which wet ground pretty well and much needed too. Nellie and Carmel walked to Lanehart's in morn and he brought them home in Surry in eve. Gordon dined here. Wiley and his family came home from his Pa's late in eve.
Mon. 26th. Bright and warm till 12 and we had a good shower from NW with some thunder and cloudy all eve and a thunder cloud came up from NW late in eve and rained till after dark. Willie and Ben cleared land out NW of orchard all day. I brought in some corn from H ridge and shucked and shelled a piling barrel of ears by 3 1/2 in eve. We didn't milk in eve on account of rain.
Tue. 27th. Bright, nearly clear, and pleasant from N and no rain in sight. Willie and Ben cut down trees just NW of orchard today. Lucy picked peas in patch E of here. I brought in 2 watermelon and some beans and tomatoes from Pine hollow on Jodie and picked grass out of strawberries in morn.
Wed. 28th. Bright in morn but cloudy all eve and rained 3 showers here from SE at 3 to 5 in eve which made ground very muddy. Willie and Ben cut down trees on NW side of orchard in morn and patched wire fence on W side of orchard in eve and put all of hogs in orchard late in eve. B Chambers came early in morn and got some pears and I let Ed Wells have 3 bu more of pears in morn on credit - he paid up for all that he got before. I shelled some dry pole beans and winnowed some bread corn which I am sunning in eve before the rain.
Thu. 29th. Bright and warm all morn and rained around in little showers most of eve and we had a good one at 3 1/2 in eve. Willie and Ben cut trees on N side of orchard today. I got wood for Lucy to wash here early in morn and brought in some tomatoes from Pine hollow and planted 6 rows of turnips in SE part of garden by 11 1/2 and sunned bread corn. Nora L and Miss Lula Coon here at 3 in eve.
Fri. 30th. Bright and warm all day and no rain here. Ed Wells came at 9 1/2 in morn and got 3 more bu of pears - making 10 bu that he has got altogether and he still owes $3.00 on them. Willie and Ben cut down trees on N side of orchard today. I planted some turnips in garden in morn and I got wood and water and fed i
