AUGUST 1902

Fri. Aug. 1st. Bright and a pleasant wind ___ all day but thundered in a cloud in sight in W at dark and rained a little in night. Willie and Henry hoed cotton in Luckett field in morn and didn't work in eve. Willie rode Joe to Clara's in eve. I hauled 3 cart loads of wood from NW of Wiley's by 10 1/2 in morn with Joe and Bernice came home with me and I picked a big sack of whip peas in Persimmon cut in eve.

Sat. 2nd. Cloudy and damp and thundered in a cloud not far off in W and SW most of morn and bright and warm most of eve and thundered in a cloud in sight in NW at dark. Willie drove Joe to buggy to town in morn and got some coffee and meal and sugar and some other things. Nellie and Minnie moved all of kitchen furniture into Pa's old room and Wiley relaid old kitchen floor for a bedroom in morn and Henry and I helped them some. Buddy and Gordon and Tigner and John came with wagon in morn and got Pa's old clock and armoire.

Sun. 3rd. Thunder cloud came up from N early in morn and rained a slow shower here at 7 1/2 to 8 1/2 but not near enough and bright till 2 and several clouds passed around from N at 2 to 5 1/2 in eve but none here. Wiley went to his Pa's in morn and Nellie at Wiley's all day and I was there at 1 1/2 to 4 1/2 in eve.

Mon. 4th. Bright and warm till 3 in eve and a thundercloud came up from SE then and one from NW and we had a heavy rain at 3 1/2 to 5 which I think wet ground well and was very much needed. Willie and Henry cut some pine poles near Luckett field in morn to build a hay shed and they sawed on a board tree toward creek in eve but rain stopped them and they got wet. I hoed in patch of new ground cotton near where Luckett's house stood in morn and I gathered 2 sacks of pears in orchard in eve and picked some whip peas on S side of Gate cut and rain ran me home at 3 1/2 and I got nearly wet and I fixed water gap and milked cows late in eve. Willie had a bad toothache late in eve and all night and drank coffee and whiskey and smoked for it and was sick all night.

Tue. 5th. Bright and warm most of day but rained around in thundershowers most of eve but none here. Willie and Henry and I sawed down a large water oak in cow pasture early in morn for boards but it was not fit and Willie and I walked around in Wiley's field ____ home by 10. I picked whip peas on lower side of Gate cut at 3 to 5 1/2 in eve. Bernice here most of day and Nellie took her home late in eve and stayed at Wiley's all night.

Wed. 6th. Bright and warm till 3 in eve and a thundercloud came up at 3 1/2 from E and we had a good slow rain at 4 to 5. Willie rode Joe to town in morn to see about getting shingles to cover hay house and Henry removed old chip pile. I cut a little white oak NW of orchard early in morn and worked on a little feed basket some in morn and some in eve and finished it at 2 3/4 in eve. Willie rode Joe to Clara's at 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 and Buddy came back with him and here till 6 1/2.

Thu. 7th. Bright and warm till 2 and rained around in thundershowers most of eve and we had a good little one at 4 3/4 in eve. Willie and Henry got out some timbers for hay house today and I worked on a large size feed basket most of day and finished it by 6 1/2 in eve. Wiley drove Joe to buggy to his Pa's early in morn and took Bernice with him and they brought Stella Mc back with them _____ Rena and baby here most of ____.

Fri. 8th. Bright and warm till 2 in eve and rained around in thundershowers at 2 to 6 and we had a little one at 4 1/2. Willie and Henry got out timbers for hay house in morn and finished and didn't work in eve. I carried some flour and tomatoes to Wiley's early in morn and worked on a little basket most of day and finished it at 5 1/4 in eve. John Fosselmann and Madison came at 8 3/4 in morn and I rode Joe in cow pasture with them and I sold 2 little yearlings to them for $14 (to buy shingles). Jack D and wife came to Wiley's in morn.

Sat. 9th. Bright and warm from W and no rain here today but rained in sight some in eve. Willie rode Joe and Henry drove mare mule and old Francis to wagon to town in morn and they got a load of shingles and some ice and they returned at 12. I gathered some pears to preserve and some vegetables early in morn and I hoed over most of garden by 11. All of us went to Wiley's late in eve and had ice cream there. Jack D and wife and Stella Mc there.

Sun. 10th. Bright and warm and no rain today but thundered in SE most of day. I walked to Wiley's early in morn and Jack and wife and Stella went home early in morn. Nellie and Lewis drove Rosa to our buggy to preaching in town in morn. Buddy and Gordon here most of day.

Mon. 11th. Bright and warm and no rain but thundered far off most of day. Henry drove Ella and Francis to wagon to town in morn and got some old plank and shingles and returned at 12 1/2. Willie drove Joe to buggy to town (and Nellie went as far as Chester Henderson's) and they got home late in eve. Wiley came early in morn and got some pears to preserve and some vegetables and I helped him to gather them and some for us too and I picked whip peas on NE corner of Persimmon cut at 8 to 11 in morn and I got wood and some corn stalks for cows and burned up some hens' nests in eve.

Tue. 12th. Bright and quite warm most of day but rained around in thundershowers in sight most of eve but none here. Willie and Henry hauled timbers for hay house most of day and put them out near big road with Ella and Francis. I picked whip peas all morn till 11 and part of eve on NE corner of Persimmon cut (for horse feed). I walked to Wiley's at 2 to 3.

Wed. 13th. Bright and quite warm till 2 in eve and rained around near here at 2 1/2 to 4 but none here. Henry hauled 2 loads of timber by 9 in morn and finished and he and Willie split and rived some in morn. I picked whip peas most of morn in Persimmon cut and I rived some pickets for weather boarding for hay house in eve and Henry barked poles and Willie and Wiley fixed the locust posts and dug some holes in eve. Rena is not well and Nellie there all day and night too.

Thu. 14th. Bright and quite warm all morn and rained around near here in thundershowers at 1 to 4 1/2 in eve from E but none here. Willie and Henry and I worked hay house most of day and Wiley helped us in eve and we got up the posts and plates and braces of body of it. Lewis and B C came there in eve. Nellie came home from Wiley's in morn and Bernice with her and staid all day and Rena and Wiley and Clara and Effie and little Henderson here in eve.

Fri. 15th. Bright and quite warm and no rain in sight today but thundered far off in eve. Willie and Henry put up posts and plates of the 2 sheds to hay house in morn and they put up rafters of body of it in eve. Wiley helped them in eve and I rived weather boarding most of day there. Charlie Anderson came by at 10 to 11 in morn running for Sheriff next year.

Sat. 16th. Bright and warm and no rain but thundered far off in eve. Willie and Henry cut and hauled a wagon load of rafters and other timbers from beyond our field early in morn and put up some rafters by 11. I drove Joe to buggy to town in morn and got some lard (10 lbs) and coffee (8 lbs) and 1 of tobacco on credit at M and C's and some other things which I paid for and I got home at 11 1/4. I walked to Wiley's in eve and packed up some wood.

Sun. 17th. Bright and very warm and dry but thundered and rained in sight late in eve. Wiley and Rena and Bernice and baby and Gordon here most of day. Camp meeting began on last Thursday and most of Lewis' family went today but none of us.

Mon. 18th. Bright and very warm and dry and no rain but thundered and rained in sight in eve. Willie and Wiley and Henry covered most of S side of hay house today and I rived weather boarding most of day and finished it. Tigner D here late in eve and got some pears to preserve.

Tue. 19th. Bright and very warm and dry and no rain but thundered and rained far off in eve. Willie and Wiley and Henry worked on hay house in morn and Henry drove Ella and Francis to wagon (and Willie rode Joe) to town in eve and got some more old plank for lathing and they got some ice and we had ice cream at night. They returned at dusk and all of Clara's folks but Dan here and West and Chunk too and Wiley and Rena and 2 little ones too and they didn't have ice cream enough for all. They spoiled 1 gal with salt water, I picked whip peas in Gate cut most of morn and packed and cut up some wood and carried some ashes in garden and drove up and milked all of cows (7) in eve.

Wed. 20th. Bright and very warm and dry and no rain in sight but thundered far off most of day. Willie and Wiley and Henry worked on hay house most of day and covered nearly all of it. I picked whip peas in morn in Gate cut and I gathered some pears and got wood in eve. Nellie at Wiley's all day.

Thu. 21st. Bright and quite warm and dry and no rain in sight but thundered far off in eve. Nellie and Rena and her 2 children drove old Jim to Dixie's early in morn and returned late in eve. Ida and her 3 children here most of day. Willie and Wiley and Henry worked on hay house most of day and Wiley dined here. I picked whip peas in Gate cut in morn and part of eve and finished there late in eve.

Fri. 22nd. Bright and very warm and dry and no rain but rained in sight NE of here in eve. Willie and Wiley and Henry worked on hay house most of day. I picked whip peas on poor SE corner of H ridge and in Persimmon cut most of day. I was feverish all day and night with cold in my head and throat. I have had cold for some time in my head.

Sat. 23rd. Bright and very warm and dry ___ eve and thundered and rained around E of N of here in sight (from NE) at 1 to 5 in eve but none here but cloudy all eve. Willie picked cotton (our first) in new ground at back of field part of morn and he sent Henry to see Fayette Bentley about some cotton baskets in morn. I picked whip peas in Persimmon cut most of morn and finished all of them but about 8 or 10 lbs. I packed and cut up wood and walked to Wiley's in eve. I was feverish with cold today. Nellie and Minnie cooked some cakes today for Willie to take to Camp meeting on tomorrow and Seymour got Ella mule in eve to drive to Camp meeting on tomorrow.

Sun. 24th. Bright and very warm and dry till 3 in eve and rained around in thundershowers at 3 to 6 3/4 and we had a sprinkle here at 6 1/4. Willie and Gordon drove Joe to Camp meeting in morn and returned before dark. Wiley went to his Pa's in morn. I walked to Wiley's in morn and Rena and her 2 children came back with me and here till late in eve. Minnie and Carmell at Lewis' most of day. Lewis here in eve.

Mon. 25th. Bright and warm and very dry from N and no rain near but a cloud in sight in S and SE late in eve. Willie and Henry picked cotton most of day in locust ground at back of field and I picked with them in morn and I hauled a cartload of wood from NW of Wiley's in eve and hauled all of cotton late in eve with Joe. Nellie walked to Wiley's late in eve and staid all night. I was very feverish in eve and at night with cold in my head and throat. I have had it for 2 or 3 weeks.

Tue. 26th. Bright and warm and very dry but some clouds in eve and thundered far off. Willie and Henry and I picked cotton till 11 in morn and most of eve in locust ground and new ground by it at back of field and I hauled 1 cart load of it at 3 1/4 in eve and 1 late in eve and we put it in hay house (room). Lewis got our buggy at 12 1/4 to go see Dr. Woods about Edna - she has a high fever today. I was feverish all day with my cold and coughed good deal at night.

Wed. 27th. Bright and very warm and dry all morn and cloudy and sultry in eve and rained around in thundershowers some in sight but none here. Willie and Henry and I picked cotton in new ground in back of field most of day and finished there (first time) late in eve. I carried cart to field with Joe early in morn and I hauled our cotton at 11 1/4 and again late in eve. I was feverish all day and night with my cold and got up at 1 in night with a coughing spell and made and drank some coffee which relieved cough but I slept but very little at night.

Thu. 28th. Bright but cloudy some all morn and a thunder cloud came up from NE and N too at 3 in eve and we had a good rain here at 4 to 6 and slowly again at night and was very much needed for everything was burning up. Willie and Henry and I picked cotton most of morn where Cap's house stood and finished that cut and hauled it home by 11 1/2. Wiley and Rena and 2 children dined here and Rena and children stayed all night. Nellie went to Lewis' in eve and returned at dusk. Dr. Magruder came to Lewis' in eve and said Edna has typhoid fever. I coughed at night and didn't ______.

Fri. 29th. Cloudy some and dropped rain at 9 in morn and bright till 2 and rained around near in thundershowers at 3 to 5 but none here. Rena and baby went home early in morn and Bernice staid till in eve. Willie rode Joe to Aunt Mary's in morn to see Cousin Gus and found him better and Willie returned at dusk. Henry didn't work today. I picked some ripe pepper in garden in morn and strung it and I walked to Wiley's in eve and I got wood and milked all of cows (7) late in eve. I was feverish and coughed good deal and had a dull aching in bowels most of day and early in night but slept some after 10 at night.

Sat. 30th. Bright and warm all day and no rain near today but thundered far off in eve. Willie and Henry picked cotton most of morn in patch of turf near where Luckett house stood and left it there in baskets. I hoed over and planted part of garden in turnips in morn. Wiley got wagon and hauled in his cotton with his team in morn. Willie and I drove Joe and Wiley rode Goulden to Turnbull's and voted for McLain for Congress in eve. I was sick and coughed good deal and couldn't sleep at night.

Sun. 31st. Bright and warm till 2 in eve and rained around near in thundershowers at 3 to 5 but none here. I drove Joe to buggy to town in morn and saw Dr. Magruder about myself and he gave me 2 prescriptions to drug store and I got them filled (Calom
