AUGUST 1901

Thu. Aug. 1st. Bright and quite warm all day but rained around some in thundershowers late in eve and dropped a little here. Willie and Jim hoed cotton in water hole cut today. Pa in bed, but sat up a little. I pulled grass out of planted potatoes in Gate cut till 11 in morn and at 3 1/4 to 5 1/2 in eve and finished all but 2 short pieces of rows.

Fri. 2nd. Bright, nearly clear, and a dry breeze from N and no rain in sight today. Willie and Jim hoed cotton in locust new ground and in old Cane hollow today. I finished pulling grass out of planted potatoes in Gate cut in 1 hour early in morn and I hoed slips on NE part of Gate cut balance of day. I carried a few figs to Wiley's at 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 in eve. Pa in bed all day.

Sat. 3rd. Clear and dry from N and no rain in sight today. Willie and Jim hoed cotton in old Cane hollow in morn and I hoed slips on NE part of Gate cut and some on SE part of H ridge till 10 1/2 in morn and we didn't work in eve. Buddy and Clara and Gordon here awhile in eve. Pa in bed all day. Nellie and Minnie cooked some in eve for camp meeting.

Sun. 4th. Bright and warm and dry till late in eve but thundered in E and SE most of day far off, and clouded up and blew from E at dark but didn't rain here. Nellie and Rena and Bernice drove Bonnie to new buggy and Wiley rode Goulden and went to camp meeting early in morn and returned at 9 at night. Willie rode Joe to Clara's in morn and got some watermelons (in a sack). I walked to Lewis' at 9 to 10 in morn and carried a few figs and I rode Joe around in our crop at 2 to 3 in eve and milked Wiley's cows and fed his hogs late in eve. Dan and Gordon here in eve. Pa still in bed.

Mon. 5th. Bright and warm till 12 and rained around in thunder showers at 1 to 3 from N - but only sprinkled here. Willie and Jim hoed cotton in old Cane hollow today and I hoed slips on SE corner of H ridge till 9 in morn and finished them and I hoed sugar cane in old cow pen corner till 11. I carried a few figs to Bernice at 1 1/4 to 2 3/4 and she and Rena came back with me. I hoed some in garden and set out some pepper and got some tomatoes and okra and squashes in eve. Pa in bed all day.

Tue. 6th. Bright, and a dry breeze from N most of day, and no rain in sight. Willie and Jim sawed and bolted some red oak timber for pickets today, S of our field. I hoed in sugar cane in old cow pen corner in morn and some in eve. Tigner Newman and Mary and Dan and Clara here awhile in eve to see Pa - he is sick in bed.

Wed. 7th. Bright, and a little cool early in morn and a dry breeze from N but thundered far off from SE in eve. Willie and Jim sawed and bolted picket timber, S of our field in morn and again late in eve. I hoed in sugar cane till 9 in morn and old Bro. Tom Brown came then and I walked to Clara's at 9 1/2 to 10 3/4 and got Mary and Clara and Effie and little Henderson to come here to see Pa baptized and I came back by Luckett field and got Willie and Jim too and Bro. Brown baptized Pa and little Carmell at 11 1/2 to 12 and left here at 2 1/2. Wiley and Rena and Bernice here too. I packed and cut up some wood and brought in some cornstalks for cows, and some ears of corn for chickens in eve.

Thu. 8th. Bright and warm and dry in morn and till 2 in eve, and rained around some in thundershowers, in sight, in eve but none here. Willie and Jim getting out picket timber today and I hoed sugar cane in orchard in morn and some in eve. Cousin Tom here today to see Pa. Pa still in bed - Mary and Clara here in eve and Mary stayed all night with Pa.

Fri. 9th. Bright, and warm and dry most of day. It rained around near in thundershowers, from SE, at 1 1/2 to 3 but none here. Willie and Jim got out timber in morn and didn't work in eve. I hoed sugar cane in NE corner of orchard in morn and didn't hoe any in eve. Mary went to Wiley's in morn and Clara and Effie came in eve, and went on to Wiley's and all went home late in eve. Pa in bed but seems better today. Nellie at Wiley's all eve.

Sat. 10th. Bright and warm and dry and no rain here but rained around some, in eve, in sight, but far off. I hoed in sugar cane in NE corner of orchard till 10 1/2 in morn and finished last of it. Wiley and Rena and Bernice drove mule to new buggy to town in morn and returned at 11 and dined here. I packed and cut up some wood and some corn from Gate cut in eve.

Sun. 11th. Bright, and warm, and dry but cloudy late in eve and thundered in E and N in a cloud in sight. Wiley rode Goulden to his Pa's in morn and returned late in eve and Rena and Bernice here most of day. Willie and Minnie drove Joe to new buggy to preaching at Methodist church in town in morn and returned at 1 1/2. Lewis and Gussie and Joe Miller here awhile in eve.

Mon. 12th. Bright, but some clouds all morn, and till 3 in eve and rained around near in thundershowers at 3 1/2 to 5 but only sprinkled slowly here at 6 1/2 to 7 1/2 . Willie and Jim got out picket timber back of our field till 4 in eve and I picked a big sack of dry whip peas for seed, on poor S part of Gate cut in morn by 9 and brought in some cornstalks for cows and some ears of corn for chickens by 10 1/2 and I hauled 2 cart loads of oak wood from NW of Wiley's, in eve, with Joe. Mary and Clara here awhile in eve. Pa still in bed.

Tue. 13th. Bright and warm till 12 and we had a hard sprinkle then and we had a good hard rain at 2 1/2 to 3 from NE and wet ground well and was very much needed and bright and warm balance of eve. Willie and Jim got out picket timber in morn and didn't work in eve on account of rain. I drove Joe to cart to Cohen's in morn and got some things for us and some for Wiley and I returned at 11 and I carried Wiley's things to his house at 1 1/4 to 2 1/4 and I rode Joe to Lewis' and carried mail at 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 and I set out some gaps in the 6 rows of Spanish potatoes on SE corner of H ridge late in eve.

Wed. 14th. Bright, but cloudy some and a damp breeze from N of E all day and rained around some in thundershowers after 12 and sprinkled several times here but not much in all. Willie and Jim got out timber in morn and didn't work in eve. I set out gaps in slip patch on NE part of Gate cut in morn and finished them at 10. Jack D and his wife came to Wiley's in morn and were here most of eve.

Thu. 15th. Cloudy and a damp wind from NE but sun shined some, and rained in little showers, most of eve, from NE. Willie and Jim hauled picket timber from back of our field, most of day, with Willie's mule and Wiley's mule to Seymour's wagon, and they got nearly wet in the showers in eve. I packed 4 turns of water from house and watered all of vines set in gaps in our slip patch on NE part of Gate cut, early in morn, and hoed over most of garden for turnips by 11 in morn. Mary and Effie here most of day and Clara and little Henderson here in eve and Lewis here too in eve. I cut up good deal of wood and packed in some corn from field in eve.

Fri. 16th. Bright and pleasant from N till 3 1/2 in eve and a thundercloud came up then and we had a hard quick rain from N and much needed too at 3 1/2 to 4 1/4 and bright late in eve. Willie and Jim hauled locust posts and slats from back of our field (to put a fence from yard to big road) all morn and till rain in eve and both got wet. I packed some ashes and stable manure in garden and planted some turnips by 9 in morn and brought in a sack of corn and some stalks, for cows, from field. I walked to Wiley's and back and cut up some wood before rain and I picked some butter beans in orchard late in eve and got nearly wet, and was sick and slept but little at night.

Sat. 17th. Bright and warm, but a pleasant breeze from SW most of day and no rain, but thundered far off late in eve. Willie and Jim finished hauling all of timber by 9 in morn and Jim carried Seymour's wagon on home and Willie rived some pickets. I picked a big sack of whip peas on poor S side of Gate cut for feed by 9 in morn. Wiley drove Joe to cart to Cohen's at 9 in morn to 12 1/2 and I hauled a cart load of wood from NW of Wiley's in eve. Joe Miller and Lewis here awhile in eve to see Pa - he is in bed.

Sun. 18th. Bright and warm from SW and no rain but thundered far off late in eve. Nellie and Rena and Bernice drove Joe to new buggy and I walked in front of them to Dixie's in morn and I brought buggy back by 10 1/4. Billy Lindsey and Wiley dined here and Wiley walked to B C's for Nellie and Rena and Bernice in eve and Willie drove Joe to new buggy to town at 4 to 7 1/2 in eve and got Dr. Cross to pull a tooth which has been aching for several days. Pa still in bed.

Mon. 19th. Bright and quite warm most of day, but rained around in little thundershowers most of eve, but none here. Willie rived pickets here on W side of house and Jim knocked down old front pickets and cut down 2 pecan and 1 pear trees by front gate in eve. I hilled slips on NE part of Gate cut with hoe in morn and I gathered some pears and put in flower pit to mellow in eve. Mary and Clara here in eve and Tigner D here at night and slept in Pa's room to wait on him at night.

Tue. 20th. Cloudy and warm early in morn and we had a little shower from SW at 8 1/2 in morn and bright till 2 1/2 and sprinkled several times in eve from SW. Willie rived pickets and Jim cut and packed away the pecan and pear trees in morn and barked locust posts today. I hilled slips on NE part of Gate cut most of day with hoe and finished them late in eve. Effie and Minnie McMahon here most of day and Gordon here at night and slept in Pa's room.

Wed. 21st. It began to rain at daylight from W and lasted till 10 - a big fall of water and needed too - and cloudy balance of day. Willie rived pickets in eve and Jim dug some post holes on W side of house or SW side of it and I gathered some pears and carried to Wiley's and picked some whip peas on poor S side of Gate cut for hogs in eve. Gordon here all day and at night again.

Thu. 22nd. Cloudy and rained a little shower at 8 in morn and bright till 12 1/2 and we had a heavy rain from S then and bright balance of eve. Willie and Jim set posts and put up railings on flower garden fence most of day. I packed some stable manure in garden for turnips early in morn and gathered some okra and tomatoes and butterbeans and carried part of them to Wiley's by 10. I picked some whip peas on poor S part of Gate cut for hogs in eve.

Fri. 23rd. Bright and warm most of day, but sprinkled a little late in eve. Willie and Jim worked on pickets around house most of day. I planted some turnips in garden in eve and picked some whip peas to feed hogs on. I hauled 3 cart loads of wood from NW of Wiley's in morn with Joe. Miss Maggie Comfort came at dark.

Sat. 24th. Bright and warm most of day, but rained a little shower in eve and one at dusk (or dark) from E or N of E. Willie and Jim put up pickets on SW and S side of house in morn and I drove Joe to new buggy to Cohen's in morn and returned at 11 1/4. I cut up some wood and got some corn in Gate cut and some whip pea vines for cows in eve. Miss Maggie C here all day and at night too. Buddy here in eve.

Sun. 25th. Bright and warm most of day, but we had a hard shower at 4 in eve from E (or from N of E). I rode Joe to Clara's in morn and carried some pears and I rode over Buddy's crop and brought back 4 watermelons at 11. Rena and Bernice and B C and Dixie and their 2 little children here most of day. Miss Maggie went home with Rena late in eve. Wiley went to his Pa's in morn.

Mon. 26th. Bright and warm till 3 in eve and thundered and rained around some at 3 to 5 but only dropped here at 6 1/2 in eve. Willie and Jim worked on flower garden pickets today. I hoed some in garden and planted some turnips early in morn and carried some butterbeans and tomatoes and okra to Wiley's at 10 in morn and picked some whip peas for hogs by 11. I gathered and carried a sk of eating pears to Lewis' in eve. Seymour got the new buggy and met Mrs. Lola Harrel and her 2 children at Cohen's and took them to his house late in eve.

Tue. 27th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight today. Willie and Jim worked on wire fence (digging post holes) between yard and big road today and Willie and Minnie drove Joe to new buggy to town in eve. I made and put up a little gate to front of flower yard in morn and gathered some pears and put in flower pit (to mellow) in eve and I picked some whip peas for hogs too. Tigner N and Mary and Clara here in eve awhile. Pa still in bed.

Wed. 28th. Bright and warm till late in eve and clouded up from NE then and rained around in thundershowers till late in night but only dropped here. Willie and Jim drove Joe and mule to Lewis' wagon to Cohen's in morn and got a bbl flour and 1 spool wire and 8 yds lowells for us and a bbl flour for Lewis. Wiley drove Joe to new buggy to Seymour's in eve late and brought Mrs. Lola Harrell and her 2 children to his house. I cut a mulberry gate post in Sims' calf pasture in morn and dragged it out to big road in eve.

Thu. 29th. Bright and warm till 2 and we had a heavy rain from N at 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 and bright balance of eve. Rena and Wiley and Bernice and Lola and her 2 children here most of day. Willie and Jim set posts between yard and big road in morn and I set posts in big gate near road in morn. I picked some whip peas in Gate cut for hogs in eve. Lola and her 2 children went back with Rena late in eve.

Fri. 30th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight today. Willie and Jim put up 3 strands of wire around cut between front gate and big road in morn and I dug down ridges and leveled at big gate on roadside till 10 in morn and picked some whip peas in Gate cut for hogs by 11. Nellie at Wiley's all day with Lola and her 2 children. Willie and Jim tore down old shed on E side of cotton house and put up new posts and plates. I walked to Wiley's and carried some ripe pears at 2 to 3 1/2. Seymour got some pears late in eve.

Sat. 31st. Bright and warm and no rain in sight today. Willie put up rafters and lathing on
