Wed. Aug. 1st. Bright and warm all morn and till 3 in eve and cloudy and sultry and no sun after 3 in eve and rained around some in thunder showers but none here. Pa hoed in his cotton by front gate today and Willie hoed in cotton in Pine corner and some on hilltop of Persimmon cut today. The black bitch treed a coon in a bay tree E of here early after breakfast and Seymour and Bob Fugler and Lewis' 3 boys came just after dinner and they cut the tree and caught a boar coon weighing 14 lbs. I plowed in late cotton in central part of Luckett field all day with Joe, running 4 furrows.
Thu. 2nd. Bright and warm in morn till 3 in eve and we had a hard shower then from E or NE and bright till 5 1/2 and thundered and rained around N of here (from E) at 6 to 6 3/4 near, but only sprinkled here then. Pa worked in his cotton by front gate till 3 in eve and Willie hoed cotton in Pine corner and Persimmon cut till 3 in eve and got soaking wet. I plowed cotton in Luckett field with Joe in morn and till 3 in eve and came home at 3 1/2 wet. I carried some peaches to Wiley's and packed and cut up some wood and gathered some pears outside of front gate and put them in some barrels in barn (to mellow). Willie and Minnie gathered some pears and pealed them to preserve late in eve.
Fri. 3rd. Bright and warm from SE till 3 in eve and a dark thunder cloud came up from SE at 4 in eve and we had a heavy rain with some wind and thunder at 4 1/2 to 5 1/4 and quit then. Willie hoed cotton in Persimmon cut till 4 in eve and Pa hoed in his cotton by front gate and I plowed cotton in SE corner of Luckett field all morn and till 4 in eve (with Joe) making 4 furrows. Willie and I just did get home as rain began. I picked up nearly a bushel of pears just after rain (late in eve) that the wind blew down and Wiley and I milked. Rena and Minnie drove old Bennie to Wiley's buggy to Jack Deloach's in morn and didn't return. Rena and baby stayed here last night and the baby again at night.
Sat. 4th. Bright and warm all morn and till 3 1/2 in eve and rained around in thunder showers at 3 1/2 to 8 and we had a little one here at 5 1/2 and another at 7 1/2 from E. Willie began and cleared land between our field and Luckett field all morn and Pa hoed in his cotton by front gate in morn and walked to Clara's and back in eve. I got wood for Aunt Margaret to wash early in morn and I hauled 2 cart loads of wood from near Wiley's and hauled a cart load of cornstalks from Cherry cut for hogs and calves by 11 in morn. Rena and Minnie returned from Jack Deloach's in morn and brought a sack of peaches and Wiley and Rena and Willie and I peeled and cut them up at 1 1/2 to 3 and Nellie put them up. Wiley and I milked late in eve. I had a dull toothache and soreness with it, in front lower jaw most of day, and it ached bad late in eve, and all night and I slept very little.
Sun. 5th. Bright and warm most of morn from SE and we had a shower from there at 10 1/2 in morn and we had several little showers in eve, and cloudy and a breeze from SE most of eve and at night and cooler. Nellie and Rena and Bernice drove Bonnie to Mrs. Wigner's in morn (early) and returned at 12 1/2. Mrs. Wigner is in bed with fever and has been for some time. Willie and Minnie and Pa and I home all day. Willie rode Joe to Clara's and back in morn and carried Bonnie home late in eve. Wiley went to his Pa's in morn and returned late in eve.
Mon. 6th. Cloudy and a damp SE wind all day and sprinkled rain several times in morn and showered hard at 12 and rained in little sprinkles late in eve. Willie cleared land just beyond our locust thicket most of day and Pa cut weeds in yard and some in orchard today. I hoed cotton in Gate cut most of morn. B C came before dinner and here till 2 1/2 and got a sack of pears to preserve and Wiley got a sack too (at 1 1/2 to 2). I got about 3 pks of pears and helped Nellie and Minnie to peel them (to preserve) in eve and I packed in a sk of bird eaten corn from orchard and cut up wood and Wiley and I milked late in eve. Wiley cut about 60 locust posts in our field in eve (to make a lane fence).
Tue. 7th. Bright and warm from SE in morn and till 4 in eve and a thunder cloud came up from SE then but didn't rain here. Willie and Minnie drove Joe to Woodville and on to Camp meeting in morn and didn't return. Pa cut weeds in yard in morn and walked to Clara's and carried a few pears in eve and returned at 5. I hoed over all of our stubble cane in orchard in morn and packed some cornstalks for hogs and calves by 11 1/2. I walked to Wiley's at 2 to 3 1/2 and Rena and baby came back with me and I gathered about 3 pks of pears for Sims to preserve and cut up wood and Rena and I milked late in eve.
Wed. 8th. Bright and warm from SE and no rain today but some dark clouds in eve. Pa hoed in his cotton in NE corner of orchard. Aunt Margaret washed in morn. I hoed cotton in Luckett field (in a little turf patch under hill) most of morn and hoed about 2/3 of it. I gathered some pears and put in a bbl in barn to "mellow" in eve and I carried some to Wiley too and Rena and baby came back with me and Rena and I milked. Willie and Minnie returned from Camp meeting at 9 at night.
Thu. 9th. Bright and warm from SE till 3 in eve and we had a heavy rain from SE at 3 1/2 to 5 with some little thunder. Willie cleared land toward Luckett field, some in morn and till 4 in eve and came home wet. I drove Joe to cart to Luckett field early in morn and hoed cotton there under hill till 10 in morn and finished there and I hauled our 2 A plows and harrow home from Luckett field and cut and hauled a load of cornstalks from Cherry cut for hogs by 11 1/2. I hauled 2 trussels and 2 long planks and 6 barrels to Lewis' in 2 cart loads with Joe in eve and staid at Lewis' one hour on account of rain. We borrowed the planks and trussels and barrels from Lewis' some time ago. Wiley and I milked late in eve. Nellie stayed at Wiley's at night - the baby was sick with cold and fever with it.
Fri. 10th. Bright and warm from S and no rain in sight today. Pa hoed in his cotton in hollow in orchard today. Willie cleared land just S of our field most of day. I drove Joe to Wiley's buggy to Cohen's in morn and returned at 11 1/4. Seymour stopped here at 1 1/2 (from Cohen's) with his double buggy and got some pears to preserve and a few mellow ones too. I put some thick leather washers on 3 of wheels of Wiley's buggy in eve. I couldn't get the other wheel off and I got some cornstalks in Cherry cut for hogs and packed in a sk of ears to feed on.
Sat. 11th. Bright and warm all day and no rain but rained in thunder showers in sight late in eve (from S). Willie and Minnie drove Joe to Wiley's buggy to Camp meeting early in morn and didn't return (they are to stay till tomorrow eve). Pa hoed in his cotton in hollow in orchard in morn and walked to Clara's and back in eve. I worked road to our field awhile early in morn with hoe and Wilkey helped me and I packed 2 turns of cornstalks from Cherry cut to feed hogs and calves and a sk of boatcorn from H ridge. I gathered some pears outside of front gate and put in 2 bbls in barn to mellow and I gathered some for Charlie Paine for Sims to preserve and cut up wood in eve.
Sun. 12th. Bright and warm most of day but rained around in thunder showers at 11 in morn to 2 1/2 in eve and we had a good little shower at 1 to 2 and bright and quite warm after 3 in eve. Mrs. Berlins Morris' 2 daughters, Nellie and Carrie, came to Wiley's on yesterday and they and Wiley and Rena and baby came here at 10 in morn and Gussie came at 11 and all here till late in eve. Gussie and the 2 girls went home at 5 1/4 in eve. Mr. Sims here late in eve. Willie and Minnie returned from Camp meeting at 9 at night.
Mon. 13th. Bright and warm all day and no rain in sight but thundered far off in eve. Willie worked on Donegal road most of day and Gordon came home with him to dinner and Gussie came at 11 1/2 and borrowed Wiley's buggy and got some pears to preserve and left at 3 3/4 in eve. I hoed up grass and weeds in garden till 10 1/4 in morn and packed up some wood and drew water for Nellie and Dean and Minnie to scour and whitewash kitchen in eve and walked to Wiley's late in eve and drove up cows and Rena and I milked.
Tue. 14th. Bright and quite warm all day and no rain in sight but thundered far off most of day. Willie and Wiley worked on Donegal road most of day. Pa cut weeds and sprouts out of road toward Luckett field today and yesterday too. I hoed up grass and weeds in garden till 9 3/4 in morn and cut some cornstalks for hogs and packed in a sk of boatcorn by 11. Misses Florida Henderson and Teresa Whetstone here at 10 3/4 to 11 3/4 in morn. I gathered some pears at 2 1/2 in eve and Minnie and I peeled them to preserve. Rena and baby here most of eve.
Wed. 15th. Bright and quite warm all day and no rain here but thundered and rained in sight in eve. Wiley and Willie worked on Donegal road most of day. I gathered some pears to preserve (and some to eat) and carried to Wiley's just after breakfast and I hoed in garden till 10 in morn and packed some cornstalks from Cherry cut for hogs and packed in a sk of boatcorn from H ridge (and last of it) by 11. I gathered some pears and put in flower pit (to mellow) and packed and cut up some wood (2 turns) and carried a bucket of old syrup to Wiley's and Rena and I milked in eve.
Thu. 16th. Bright and warm and getting dry and no rain here but thundered and showered in sight in eve. Willie and Wiley worked on Donegal road most of day and they finished it. I hoed in garden till 9 in morn and finished it and I packed some cornstalks from Cherry cut for hogs and a sk of nubbins from there by 10 1/4 and I got some okra in orchard and churned by 11 1/4. I turned down some corn tops in orchard and packed 2 turns of wood and cut up and drove up cows and Rena and I milked them. Lucy washed here today. I have a cold in my head and throat since last Sun. and was feverish all day and had a pain and soreness in my head and it was pretty bad all night with some fever. Minnie has the cold too. Rena and the baby and Nellie and Wiley are nearly well of it.
Fri. 17th. Bright and warm and dry till 4 in eve and thunder showers passed around E and NE from SE from 4 till in night and we had a sprinkle at 6 and a good shower at 9. Willie cleared land in hollow SE of our locust thicket most of day. Pa cut out road by locust thicket in morn and walked to Clara's and back in eve. I rode Joe around in Luckett field and brought some cornstalks to hogs and a sack of nubbins from Cherry cut by 9 in morn and I turned down corntops in orchard till 10. I had a headache and sick stomach early in morn and was feverish and chilly too, but got a little better after breakfast but the headache lasted all day and night too. I gathered a few pears in eve and put in a bbl in barn (to mellow) and I drove up cows late in eve and Wiley and I milked then. Wiley hauled his locust posts from back of our field in morn with Fanny and cart. Buddy and Bob Fugler came to Wiley's at night to fiddle and Nellie and Willie and Minnie went there and Nellie didn't come back.
Sat. 18th. Bright and warm all morn and thundered and showered around from SE most of eve (near) but only sprinkled a little here. Willie cleared in SE corner of our field in morn. Wiley drove Fanny mule to Cohen's in morn and brought cart home at 12. I rode Joe in field in morn early and brought some corn stalks to hogs and a sack of nubbins home by 9 and I cleaned out our cotton house by 10. Dan here in eve and went on to Wiley's and staid there awhile. I carried some mellow pears and some papers to Lewis' at 3 to 5 1/4 in eve. My cold (or whatever it is) is better today, but I am feverish and sore all over and through too.
Sun. 19th.. Bright and warm all morn and cloudy all eve and rained in sight S of here at 1 1/2 to 3 1/2 in eve but none here. Gussie and Helen and Viola came to Wiley's on yesterday eve and they and B C and Dixie and baby and Ida and her 2 little girls at Wiley's till late in eve and all left then. Lewis and his family there too in eve. I walked there at 3 to 5 1/4 in eve. Tom Morris came here late in eve and left at 10 1/4 at night. Bob Fugler drove Dixie's buggy to Mrs James' in morn and brought Miss Mary Boatner and Mary James here at dark.
Mon. 20th. Bright and warm and dry and no rain in sight today. Willie cleared land in SE corner of our field most of day. Pa picked cotton (our first) in Gate cut some in morn and some in eve. I picked there too part of eve. I rode Joe and Wiley Goulden to Chester Henderson's in morn and we bought 2 Guernsey cows and calves for $50 and are to get them home soon. Bob Fugler came in eve and here till 10 at night.
Tue. 21st. Bright and warm and dry all day and no rain, but thundered far off in eve and rain clouds in sight. Willie cleared in SE corner of our field in morn and didn't work in eve. Pa picked cotton in Gate cut part of day. John Fosselman and 2 colored men came early in morn and Wiley sold him 2 young cows and their calves for $30 and I sold him 4 yearlings (3 red heifers and 1 white back steer) for $26 and Wiley and I helped to drive them out of pasture on creek (we sold the cattle to pay for the Guernsey cattle). Wiley and I patched up cowpasture wire fence on creek in eve.
Wed. 22nd. Bright and warm and dry most of day and no rain here but thundered and rained around near most of eve. Wiley and Willie and I rode to Chester Henderson's early in morn and Wiley and I bought a Guernsey cow and calf apiece for $25 each and we drove them home by 9 and I got some corn and stalks for our cow by 10. I rode Joe to Cohen's in eve at 1 1/2 to 5. Buddy and Gordon and Tigner and Tom Morris and Bob G and West and Lila and Edna all here in eve and they fiddled most of eve and till nearly 10 at night and all ate supper here and Wiley and Rena and baby here most of eve too.
Thu. 23rd. Bright and warm and dry most of day. A thunder cloud came up from SW at 2 in eve and rained a hard little sprinkle here and a good shower just SW of here near. Willie cleared in SW corner of our field in morn and didn't work in eve. Pa picked cotton awhile in morn and awhile in eve in Gate cut. I plowed up part of garden in morn by 10 and was sick at stomach and had a pain in my head and quit at 10. Mary and Clara and her 2 youngest children at Wiley's most of day and Nellie too and I walked there at 11 1/2 to 1 1/2 and dined there. I hauled a cart load of wood from Wiley's with Joe in eve. Mrs. James and all of her children come on a wagon at 3 1/2 in eve and all of the children but the 2 youngest went to Lewis' and Seymour's late in eve.
Fri. 24th. Bright and warm most of day from SW. A thunder cloud came up from there at 2 but only sprinkled a little here then. Willie cleared in SE corner of our field in morn and some in eve too. Pa picked cotton in Gate cut today. I finished plowing up garden by 9 in morn and cut up wood and drew up water for Lucy to wash by 10 and brought in some corn and stalks from Cherry cut by 11. I burned some of grass in garden at 2 and I put new stirrups and straps to my saddle by 4 in eve and packed 2 turns of wood and cut it up and Willie and I milked late in eve.
Sat. 25th. Bright and warm and dry and no rain in sight today. Pa walked to Clara's in morn and returned late in eve. Willie cleared in SE corner of our field (locust thicket) in morn and didn't work in eve. He rode Joe to Clara's in eve. I drove Joe to our old buggy to town in morn and got a whiskey barrel from Stern to make 2 tubs at 40cts. I got 1/2 lb. of turnip seed (20cts.) and 25 ct. box of gold dust from Adams and I got 2 crocks from Rothschild's, and a gallon of vinegar from Mrs. Johnson, for Rena, and paid for all, and got home by 12 1/4 and I carried Rena's things to her at 2 to 3 and packed in some corn and wood in eve. Mrs. James and her 2 youngest children went to Seymour's in morn and stayed there at night. Tom Morris here late in eve and till 10 1/4 at night. I had a kind of looseness of bowels all day and night too, I think from taking Quinine and Iron tablets which I have been taking since last Mon. morn. I didn't take any today.
Sun. 26th. Bright and warm and dry most of day. A thunder cloud came up from SW at 11 1/2 in morn and rained out and didn't get here and a cloud blew up from NW late in eve and dropped rain here at dusk. Wiley rode to his Pa's in morn and returned late in eve. Rena and baby and Robert James here to dinner. Robert drove his wagon from here to Seymour's after dinner and got Mrs' James and all of her children and they and Miss Mary Boatner left here (for home) at 5 in eve. My diarrhea or looseness of bowels lasted all day but I have no nausea or pain and was better late in eve.
Mon. 27th. Bright and warm from SW till 3 in eve and clouded up then and we had a good hard rain at 3 3/4 to 5 which I think wet the ground pretty well and was much needed for ground was very dry and everything was suffering for rain. We had some little thunder with the rain but no wind. Pa picked cotton in Gate cut till 3 1/2 in eve and Willie and I picked in Persimmon cut on NE corner till 3 1/2 in eve and Willie and I milked late in eve. Misses Caroline and Fafa Collins came in morn hunting a school and dined here and left late in eve.
Tue. 28th. Bright and warm till 11 in morn and cloudy balance of day and rained around in thunder showers at 11 in morn to 2 in eve but no rain here. Willie cleared in SE corner of field part of morn and got up Dan from cow pasture and Willie rode Dan in eve and found Joe out in Sims' Quarters and brought him home. Joe got out of our cow pasture on last Sun. Willie and Minnie gathered their popcorn in Luckett field late in eve. Pa picked in his cotton on hollow in orchard part of day. I sowed and hoed under all of garden in turnips by 9 in morn and I sawed the whiskey barrel (got on last Sat.) and made 2 wash tubs by 9 in morn and got a sk of corn in orchard. I picked 30 of cotton on E end of Gate cut (by H ridge) at 2 1/4 to 5 in eve and Willie and I milked late in eve.
Wed. 29th. Bright and warm most of day and rained around, near, in thunder showers at 3 to 6 in eve, from E, but none here. Wiley and Willie worked on Donegal road in morn and Willie and I picked cotton most of eve on hilltop of Persimmon cut. Pa picked in his cotton by front gate most of day. Pa and I cleaned out potatoe house and put a slat floor in it (above pit) for Pa to put his cotton in early in morn. I had a dull headache most of day but it left me at night.
Thu. 30th. Bright and warm all morn till 11 and began to rain around in thunder showers then and lasted all eve and rained a little shower here at 5 and another slow one at 6 1/2 to 8 at night. Pa picked in his cotton by front gate all day till 4 1/4 in eve and Willie and I picked cotton on hilltop of Persimmon cut till 9 in morn and in Gate cut till 4 in eve and rain stopped us. Wiley and Rena and baby dined here. Lucy washed in morn and part of eve.
Fri. 31st. Bright and warm all day and no rain here but thundered and rained in sight at 2 1/2 to 4 in eve. Pa picked in his cotton by front gate most of day and Willie cleared land in SE corner of our field in morn. I hauled 2 cart loads of oak wood from NW of Wiley's (with Joe) by 10 1/4 in morn. I went the new road which Wiley made through Lewis' field. I gathered some pea
