AUGUST 1895

Thu. Aug. 1st. Bright and warm all morn and showered around some at 11 to 12 and cloudy and sultry in eve. Pa and Willie hoed cotton in Water hole cut in morn and I plowed late corn in Gate cut and finished it by 11 and we didn't work in eve on account of heat. Dixie and Gussie returned from Seymour's at dusk.

Fri. 2nd. Cloudy and a thunder cloud came up from NW at 8 in morn and we had a good little shower then and another cloud came up from there at 3 to 4 in eve and we had a heavy rain then. Pa and Willie hoed in Water hole cut till 8 1/2 in morn and finished. I began to scrape slips in NE corner of orchard in morn and rain stopped me at 8 1/4. We did nothing in eve on account of rain.

Sat. 3rd. Cloudy some all day and very little sunshine and a cloud came up from NW at 11 in morn but only sprinkled then till after 12 and we had a hard little shower from NW at 9 at night and we had a heavy one with thunder and a little wind at 2 at night. Pa walked to Clara's in morn and there all day. Willie rode Joe to town in morn and paid Schaeffer and got some things and returned at 12 1/2. I drove Hattie to Cohen's in morn and carried some peaches to them and returned at 12 1/4.

Sun. 4th. Cloudy and wet and misted rain till 9 in morn and bright and pleasant from NW balance of day. Nellie at Lewis' all day and Willie walked to Clara's in morn and there all day. I rode Hattie to Clara's in eve and carried some peaches. W.D. and B.C. here in eve and till 9 1/4 at night.

Mon. 5th. Bright and warm till 3 and cloudy some and thundered around some in eve but no rain here. Willie cut and split timber (for stables to new barn) most of day in cow pasture. Pa at Clara's all day putting bottoms in chairs. I scraped about 1/2 of slip patch in NE corner of orchard and hauled a cartload of corn stalks from Pine corner for pigs and calves in morn and I planted some whip peas in late corn in Gate cut in eve. Jack brought me 34 lbs. peas from Charles Chase at 10 in morn. Dan here most of day and helped Willie and me to shell some peas at 1 to 3. Misses Cook and Grace Chambers here in eve.

Tue. 6th. Bright and warm till 11 and showers passed around till 12 and a thunder cloud came up from W at 4 but only sprinkled here. Willie cut and split timber in cow pasture till 10 in morn and Pa walked to Clara's in morn and there all day. I finished scraping slips in NE corner of orchard by 9 and hauled a cartload of cornstalks from Pine corner for pigs and calves by 10.. Billy James came at 10 and Willie rode Hattie and went with Billy to Surgett's and they butchered a bull there and Billy came back with Willie at 3 1/2 and dined here and left at 5. Bud and B.C. here awhile in eve. I had a dull headache all day and all night.

Wed. 7th. Bright and warm and no rain. I planted slips in NE corner of orchard in morn and I planted some whip peas in late corn in Gate cut in eve. Pa cut weeds in orchard all day.

Thu. 8th. Bright and warm and no rain. I rode Hattie in cow pasture with Doug Walker and Willie rode Joe and helped Doug to drive the 5 yearlings bought from Willie into Mr. Dick Chambers pasture by 8 1/2 in morn and I made an ax handle and put it in my ax for Willie to chop with by 11. Willie cut and rived timber most of day. I planted whip peas in late corn in Gate cut late in eve and finished it. Mrs. Primm here all day and Aunt Tilda, too.

Fri. 9th. Bright and warm and no rain but thundered far off all eve. I hoed on hilltop of H ridge and Pa on SE corner in cotton in morn till 9. I hauled cartload of cornstalks from Pine corner by 10. Bud and Wiley D here most of day and Mrs. Cook here at 11 to 12 and I gathered some peaches for her. Willie split timber in morn. I turned down tops of corn by front gate on E side and finished that side all but 8 long rows at 4 to 6 in eve.

Sat. 10th. Bright and warm and no rain but thundered in E and N in eve and at night. Willie caught an old coon and a young one in morn. I hoed around peas and apple trees by front gate in morn and turned down tops of corn there till 9 1/2 in morn and again in eve at 4 to 6 and finished all between yard and road. Dixie and Rena walked to Estina in morn and all went to baseball game in eve but me and Nellie and on to Lewis' at night and played and fiddled till midnight.

Sun. 11th. Bright and warm till late in eve and we had a good little thunder shower at 5 1/2 to 6 from NE. Joe Miller here to breakfast and Cousin Tom to dinner. I carried some apples and peaches to Sims' and got some papers in morn. W.D. and B.C. here in eve and till 9 at night.

Mon. 12th. Bright and warm till 4 in eve but then thundered and rained in E at 2 to 5 and rained a good little shower here at 5 1/4 to 6 from NE. Willie and I split and rived stable timber in cow pasture till 10 1/4 in morn. I packed a sack of corn from Pine corner at 2 (the 1st) - our boat corn just gave out yesterday. Green Morris here at 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 and borrowed new buggy.

Tue. 13th. Bright and warm till late in eve and we had a good shower at 6 and another at 7 from E. Willie and I finished splitting and riving stable timber in cow pasture by 10 in morn

and we didn't work in eve. Bud here in eve and Mattie Morris brought buggy home in eve and I gave her some peaches and apples.

Wed. 14th. Bright and warm all day and thundered around some late in eve but no rain here. I drove Hattie to old buggy to Cohen's in morn and returned at 11 1/4. We didn't work in eve on account of heat.

Thu. 15th. Bright and warm all day till late in eve and thundered and showered around then but no rain here. I hauled stable timber from cow pasture till 11 1/4 in morn with Hattie and Willie cut some poles there (12) and I hauled them too. W.D. here all day and till 9 at night.

Fri. 16th. Cloudy and rained slowly at 10 to 12 and cloudy all eve. I hauled 3 cartloads of wood from cow pasture by 10 in morn and we did nothing in eve. Jam - Dunckly Dawson here all day and at night. Pa walked to Clara's in eve and stayed all night.

Sat. 17th. Cloudy all day and dropped rain awhile early in morn and some late in eve. Willie rode Joe to town in morn and returned at 12 1/2. I hauled all of stable timber from bars on roadside (home) in 6 cartloads and hauled some corn from Pine corner by 11 in morn. J D Dawson left here early in morn. Pa at Clara's last night and today and again at night. Clara and children and Dan went to Camp meeting in morn. Nellie cooked some today for Dixie and Rena to go on tomorrow. I cut up wood and sewed up my fine shoes and oiled both buggies in eve. Lewis here awhile in eve.

Sun. 18th. Cloudy all day and rained slowly from NE at 5 to 10 in morn and Dixie and Rena couldn't go to Camp meeting. Wiley D came at 11 and Beau C came in eve and they stayed till night. I rode Hattie to Clara's in eve and no one there but Pa and Ma. Clara and Dan and children returned from Camp meeting late in eve.

Mon. 19th. Bright in morn but a cloud came up from NW at 1 and rained a good shower till 3 and cloudy balance of eve. B.C. and Dixie went in her buggy and W.D. and Rena in Gussie's buggy and Willie rode Joe to Camp meeting early in morn and they returned at 9 at night. I worked on stable to new barn on NE end all morn and Pa helped me some. He got home from Clara's at 9 in morn.

Tue. 20th. Cloudy most of day but only dropped rain late in eve. I drove Hattie to cart to Cohen's in morn and returned at 11 1/2 and Pa hoed all of garden in morn and part of eve (late). Willie caught 3 coons with his hounds early in morn and Willie and I killed 5 jaybirds in eve - they are eating our corn.

Wed. 21st. Bright and no rain today. Nellie and I drove Hattie to Camp meeting early in morn and returned at 8 1/4 at night. Willie walled up E side of stables to new barn in morn and Pa cut down weeds in yard. Seymour here today from Lewis'.

Thu. 22nd. Bright and warm and no rain - wind from NW. Willie and Dixie drove Joe (1st time) and W.D. and Rena drove Billy to Gussie's buggy to Camp meeting early in morn and returned at 8 1/4 at night. Pa and I walled up NW end of stable to new barn by 10 in morn and I got wood and brought some corn from field in eve. Seymour here at night.

Fri. 23rd. Bright and warm till 4 in eve and we had a good little shower at 4 1/2 to 5 from SW. Pa, Willie and I walled up W side of stable to new barn in morn. John Fugler here at 9 to 10 in morn and he and Seymour left then. Pa walked to Clara's and Nellie to Gussie's in eve and Beau C here in eve and till 9 at night.

Sat. 24th. Bright and warm till late in eve and thundered and showered NW and N and NE of here but none here. Willie and I cut a mulberry post and set it and hung front gate to it (the old one was rotten) by 10 1/2 in morn. Dan here most of day. I got some corn from Pine corner and cut up some wood in eve. Clarence Morris and Ida (his wife) here at sunset to dark.

Sun. 25th. Bright, warm and no rain. Nellie and I drove Hattie and Willie rode Joe to Camp meeting early in morn and returned at 8 at night. Clara and children went too. W.D. and Beau C here in eve and till 9 1/4 at night. Pa at Clara's all day and at night. The camp meeting closed at night.

Mon. 26th. Bright and quite warm and dry and no rain. I had a dull headache all yesterday and last night and till 12 today and it left me entirely late in eve. Nellie and I drove Hattie to Donegal church in morn and Bishop got there at 12 and began his protracted meeting. We got home at 3 in eve and I got some corn from Pine corner and cut up wood. Bud came at 4 1/4 and went on to town and saw Dr. Magruder about Ma (she is sick) and got some medicine for her. Nellie went to Clara's late in eve and stayed all night.

Tue. 27th. Bright and quite warm and thundershowers passed around W from S at 3 to 5 1/2 in eve but none here. Pa picked a little cotton (the 1st) on H ridge in morn. I rode Hattie to Clara's early in morn and brought Nellie home by 9. Ma is better today. Willie rehoed garden for turnips in morn early and he and I cut and packed 4 poles for well frame in morn by 11 1/4 from NW of orchard. Dixie and Rena drove Hattie and Willie rode Joe to Jim Fugler's to a birthday supper late in eve and stayed there all night and Pa stayed at Clara's all night.

Wed. 28th. Bright and warm till 10 1/2 in morn and cloudy and cooler balance of day from SE. Nellie and I drove Hattie to Donegal church in morn and we had 2 sermons from P. Elder Jones and dinner there and conference. I planted most of our garden in turnips and radishes in morn early. Dixie and Rena and Willie returned from Fugler's early in morn and Pa from Clara's at 9 in morn and he picked little cotton on H ridge today. Nellie and I returned at 5 1/4 in eve.

Thu. 29th. Cloudy some all day but sun shined some and thundered around some in eve but no rain here. I rode Hattie to Cohen's in morn early and got some tea and sugar and crackers for Ma and came back by Clara's. Ma is better but still in bed. I got home at 10 in morn. Pa and Willie picked cotton on H ridge in morn and Pa there all eve and finished that cut (1st time). Dixie and Rena and Beau C and W.D. and Willie went to Donegal church at night and returned at 11 3/4. I was feverish all day with my left foot which is inflamed and swollen (I cut it with an ax 1 week ago) and I sweat good deal at night and slept but little.

Fri. 30th. Bright and warm most of day and thunder showers passed around near from SE late in eve at 3 1/2 to 6 but none here. Pa picked cotton most of day in Cane hollow and Willie picked in theirs in Cherry cut. I cleaned out new cotton house and put up 2 steps to new barn and picked little cotton in orchard in morn and I picked there in eve at 3 to 5 1/2. Gussie's and Helen's baby was sick and Nellie went there in eve and stayed all night.

Sat. 31st. Bright and quite warm and dry most of day and thundered and showered E of here most of eve but none here. Willie and I picked cotton on hilltop of Cherry cut and Pa in Cane hollow till 9 1/2 in morn. Willie rode Hattie to baseball game in eve and George F and Tom Morris came back with him at dark and left at 11. John Miller and Mag came at 11 1/4 and here all night.
