APRIL 1918

Mon. Apr. 1st. Warm and cloudy from SW but no rain. Willie cleaned off ground and Dud and Bunges broke ground today. I set out some tomatoes in new garden in morn and thinned cucumbers and squashes and planted some eggplants.

Tue. 2nd. It sprinkled rain at sunrise and we had a little shower at 11 in morn and bright and warm from SW balance of day. Willie making a harrow today. Dud and Bunges finished breaking ground in field at 10 in morn and broke in patch E of here balance of day. I cut 6 stakes out NW of new garden and set them and some old ones between rows of beans in new garden for arbors in morn.

Wed. 3rd. Bright but cloudy some and warm from SW. Willie worked on harrow in morn and Dud and Bunges broke ground in patch E of here in morn and they planted cotton in eve. I set up poles and tied them up for one arbor of pole and one of butter beans in new garden in morn and packed some rotten potatoes in new garden too.

Thu. 4th. Bright till 3 in eve and very warm and a thunder cloud passed around S of here from SW at 4 to 6 in eve and we had a little shower at 5 1/2. Dud and Bunges planted cotton till 5 1/2 in eve and got nearly wet. Willie worked on a new harrow and an old plow most of day. I hoed most of Irish potatoes in old garden in morn.

Fri. 5th. Bright in morn but some clouds and a thunder cloud S of here most of eve but only sprinkled a little here. Dud and Bunges planted cotton all day and Willie helped them some. I hoed and finished Irish potatoes in old garden and hoed all of balance of garden in morn. Bro Tom dined here.

Sat. 6th. We had a big rain at 3 to 4 1/2 in morn from S with some thunder and cloudy and cooler today and rained some slowly late in eve. Dud and Bunges scraped cane stubble N of here in morn. I planted some Beauty tomatoes in field in morn. Willie and Minnie drove Daisie to Mrs. James' in eve.

Sun. 7th. Bright and cool from N and no rain in sight. Carmel and Marion went to SS in eve and Nellie and Charles to Wiley's. Willie and Minnie returned from Mrs. James' late in eve.

Mon. 8th. Bright and cool from N. Dud and Bunges broke ground in patch E of here and N of here today. Willie made hoe handles today. I set out some onions in new garden and packed some manure and put between onion rows there in morn. Lin Ferguson here most of eve and Willie gave him some cotton seed.

Tue. 9th. Bright and cool from N. Dud and Bunges planted cotton today. Willie hoed in watermelon patch today. I hoed in beans and okra and peas in new garden (W side) in morn.

Wed. 10th. Clear and a cold N wind all day and frost at night. Dud and Bunges finished planting cotton early in morn and Dud broke ground in patch N of here and finished last of breaking land late in eve. Bunges sick most of day. Willie hoed watermelons today. I hoed cucumbers and squashes and tomatoes in new garden in morn and finished hoeing there. Willie and I shelled some bread corn in eve.

Thu. 11th. Clear and a frost in morn and didn't seem to kill vegetation much but scorched it a good deal and warmer in eve. Willie hoed in watermelon patch and Dud and Bunges scraped cane stubble in patch N of here today. I hoed up ground for tomatoes in field in morn.

Fri. 12th. Bright, nearly clear, and nearly cold enough for a frost in morn but warmer in eve from SE. Willie rode Daisie all day hunting cattle for dipping tomorrow. Dud and Bunges began and barred off corn today. I hoed up ground for tomatoes in field in morn.

Sat. 13th. Bright but some clouds and very cool in morn but warmer in eve. Willie and Marion dipped cattle in morn and Dud and Bunges barred off corn in morn. I hoed up ground for tomatoes in field in morn. Willie drove Buck to town in eve and returned at dusk with meal.

Sun. 14th. Cloudy but bright and warmer today from SE. Willie and Minnie drove Daisie to Mrs. James early in morn and returned late in eve. Willie James came home on yesterday. Sarah Percy and brother and sister brought Carmel home in eve. All left late in eve but Sarah - she stayed all night.

Mon. 15th. Cloudy and warm but windy from SE and looked like rain all day but none here. Willie rode Daisie all day hunting cattle. Dud and Bunges barred off corn today. I hoed onions and part of Irish potatoes in old garden in morn.

Tue. 16th. Warm and cloudy and sprinkled rain some in morn and a thunder cloud came up from S late in eve and we had a flood of rain with some thunder at 5 1/2 to 8 and quit. Dud and Bunges barred off corn till the rain and got nearly wet. Willie made some hoe handles and put in new hoes in morn and hoed his Irish potatoes in field in eve. I finished hoeing my Irish potatoes in old garden by 9 1/2 in morn and patched 2 pairs of old pants before 12.

Wed. 17th. It began to rain before day with thunder from S and lasted till 11 1/2 in morn and quit and cloudy all eve. No work done today. Carmel and Marion didn't go to school today on account of rain.

Thu. 18th. Cloudy some all day but no rain and bright in eve. Dud and Bunges cut briars and bushes in calf pasture today. Willie rode Daisie to cattle dipping at Elmwood in morn and looking for some of his cattle and West came with Willie to dinner and Willie went back with West in eve and found all of his missing cattle and drove them back on creek. I hoed around 3 September fig trees and 3 Blight proof pear trees out E of here in morn.

Fri. 19th. Cloudy in morn and bright and warm in eve. Willie planted some corn in watermelon patch in morn. Dud and Bunges cut briars in calf pasture today. I hoed beans on W side of new garden in morn. Mrs. James and Mattie came at 1 1/2 in eve.

Sat. 20th. Bright and a very cool wind from W of N. I hoed peas and cucumbers and squashes in new garden in morn. Bunges cut briars in calf pasture in morn and Dud hoed his Irish potatoes in morn. Willie drove Buck to town in eve.

Sun. 21st. Bright in morn and very cool from N and cloudy in eve and warmer. All went to SS in eve but Nellie and Charles and Carl and me and Mrs. James and Mattie and they left for home late in eve. Bro Dawson preached there in eve.

Mon. 22nd. Bright and cool in morn and warmer in eve. Willie and hands hoed corn today. I hoed tomatoes and onions in new garden and hoed around bought pecan trees in morn.

Tue. 23rd. Bright and warmer today. Willie and hands hoed corn today. Bunges finished barring off old corn in eve and plowed Irish potatoes in field late in eve. I hoed the row (8) of peach trees out E of here in morn.

Wed. 24th. Bright, but cloudy some and warmer from SW. Willie and hands hoed corn today. I hoed around peach and young pear trees out E of here in morn.

Thu. 25th. A thunder cloud came up from W just before day and we had a good rain here at 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 in morn and bright and pleasant today from W. Willie and Bunges went to Wiley's early in morn and shucked and shelled some seed corn there and brought it home by 10 and shelled some bread corn in barn by 12 and Willie and hands hoed corn in eve. I hoed around some peach and fig trees out E of here in morn.

Fri. 26th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. Willie and hands hoed corn in morn and hands in eve and Willie rode Daisie to drive up cattle to dip in eve. I hoed around fig and apple and peach trees out E of here in morn.

Sat. 27th. Bright but cloudy and warm and windy from S. Willie and Marion dipped cattle early in morn and Willie drove Buck to town in eve and returned at dark with meal. Dud and Bunges ran cultivators on corn middles in morn. I hoed around fig and apple trees out E of here in morn.

Sun. 28th. A thunder cloud came up from NW just before day and we had a big rain with some thunder till daylight and bright and warm all day. Bernice and Mamie Kaigler here in morn awhile. Marion went to SS in eve.

Mon. 29th. A thunder cloud came up from NW at 3 1/2 in morn and rained a big rain till 8 in morn and cloudy and very wet balance of day and rained some slowly through the night. Carmel and Marion didn't go to school today. Willie rode Daisie in eve to hunt cattle. Dud and Bunges cut briars in calf pasture in eve. I cut weeds around 2 fig trees at wire E of here in morn.

Tue. 30th. Bright and cool from W of N all day and no rain today. Willie rode Daisie in morn to hunt cattle. Dud and Bunges cut briars in calf pasture today. I set out some sage in old garden and hoed around the big fig tree there in morn. Willie and Minnie drove Daisie to town to a Red Cross entertainment at night.
