Tue. Apr. 1st. Bright and pleasant from S. Willie and Ben broke ground today. I scraped Irish potatoes in patch E of henshed in morn and planted 2 arbors of white pole beans in hollow E of here in eve.
Wed. 2nd. Foggy and damp till 10 in morn and bright and pleasant from S balance of day. Willie and Ben broke ground today. I scraped Irish potatoes in new ground E of here in morn and shucked corn and shelled some for seed in eve.
Thu. 3rd. Warm and cloudy and windy from S all day and rained late in the night. Willie and Ben broke ground all day. I got wood for Leah to wash here early in morn and scraped Irish potatoes balance of morn and shucked corn and shelled some seed corn and dug the dirt off hills of bush beans in garden in eve.
Fri. 4th. A thunder cloud came up from NW at 3 in morn and we had a big rain till 7 and quit and cloudy till 10 1/2 and bright and pleasant from NW balance of day. Willie and Ben cleaned up ground in field today. I cut up good deal of wood and fixed spring and found a pale Dom hen setting on 8 eggs near bean patch and put the eggs under 3 different hens in old cotton house. I scraped Irish potatoes in new ground E of here in eve.
Sat. 5th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool from NE. Willie and Ben planted some watermelons and cleaned up ground in morn and Willie drove Sandy to town in eve. I scraped Irish potatoes in new ground E of here in morn and patched a pair of pants in eve.
Sun. 6th. Bright and cool and pleasant. Nellie and Charles and Marion dined at Wiley's - Gussie D and wife and 2 youngest children there. All went to hear Bro Hopper preach at the schoolhouse in eve except Minnie and me and they took Sacrament there.
Mon. 7th. Bright but cloudy some all day and a pleasant breeze from S. Willie and Ben broke ground today. I scraped Irish potatoes in new ground E of here in morn and shucked corn and shelled 1/2 bu bread corn in eve and hoed the 5 rows of Irish potatoes in garden in eve.
Tue. 8th. Bright but cloudy some all day and windy from S all day and lightning in W at night. Willie and Ben broke ground in morn and they and Leah planted corn all eve. I hoed Irish potatoes in new ground E of here in morn and shucked corn and shelled 1/2 bu bread corn in eve and planted some okra and butter beans in hollow E of here in eve.
Wed. 9th. Cloudy and windy from S till late in eve and a big thunder cloud came up from NW at 5 1/4 in eve and we had a big washing rain at 5 3/4 to 8 and slowly till late in night. Willie and Ben and Leah planted corn till late in eve and rain ran them home. I scraped Irish potatoes in new ground E of here in morn and shucked corn and shelled 1/2 bu of bread corn and put coal oil on 4 boxes to kill lice in eve.
Thu. 10th. Bright and pleasant from NW. Willie rode Sandy and Ben rode Julia (mule) to hunt cattle in morn and put them in Elmwood pasture and Willie went back after dinner and found all of them and Ben set posts around a new cow pen on W side of old barn in eve and he and Willie put up net wire around it late in eve. I fixed spring and cut up good deal of wood in morn and shelled and winnowed some bread corn in eve.
Fri. 11th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool from W of N. Willie cleaned off new ground in field today and Ben broke ground there with the mules. I scraped Irish potatoes in cane ground in morn and finished that part of potatoes and I replanted bush beans in garden in eve. Wiley carried 9 pecks of bread corn for us to town in morn and got it ground.
Sat. 12th. Bright and a very little frost in morn and pleasant from N all day. Ben broke new ground in Pine hollow in morn and Willie ran cultivator with Sandy in Irish potatoes in cane patch E of here in morn and he and Marion drove Sandy to town in eve. I hoed beans and peas and onions and Irish potatoes in garden in morn and till 4 in eve and planted some sage and eggplant seed too. Joe Miller and Chunk ate supper here at night.
Sun. 13th. Bright but some clouds and a very little frost in morn and a cold wind from N all day. Willie and children walked to SS in eve and Nellie and Charles to Lewis' and I walked to Wiley's and back by 3 in eve.
Mon. 14th. Bright, nearly clear, and a little frost in morn and cool and dry from NW. Willie plowed the Irish potatoes in new ground E of here in morn with Ella and Ben barred off corn in Gate cut with Julia in morn and he and Willie both barred off there in eve. I hoed and picked grass out of strawberries in garden most of day.
Tue. 15th. Clear and very cool early in morn but a pleasant day from NW. Willie and Ben barred off corn today with the mules - 3 hands hoed corn in eve. I hoed strawberries and winter onions in garden in morn and finished the last of garden and I hoed around 8 rows of white pole beans in hollow E of here in eve.
Wed. 16th. Clear and cool early in morn but a pleasant day. Willie and Ben barred off corn today and some hands hoed corn in Gate cut. I got wood and water for Leah to wash early in morn and I replanted pole and butter beans and okra in bean patch till 11 and rode Sandy in Elmwood pasture in eve and saw all our cattle but one steer.
Thu. 17th. Bright, nearly clear, and dry and pleasant. Minnie gave birth to her 3rd son at 3 1/2 in morn. Willie and Ben barred off corn and some hands hoed corn. I planted an arbor of butter beans in hollow E of here in morn after digging up the ground and I rode Sandy in Elmwood pasture in eve and saw most of cattle.
Fri. 18th. Bright, nearly clear, and dry and pleasant. Ben and Harrison Bethelly barred off corn and some hands hoed corn today. Willie put up wire around the new cow pen E of old barn and finished it by 3 1/4 in eve and he and Son and I walked in Elmwood pasture and drove Kitty (cow) home with a bull calf late in eve. I cleaned off some ground in Sims' corner and planted some cucumbers in morn.
Sat. 19th. Bright, nearly clear, and dry and pleasant. Ben and Harrison Beth. barred off corn in morn and some hands hoed corn. Willie ran harrow on some corn in back of field to help it to come up in morn with Sandy and Willie and Ben drove him to town in eve. I planted some pepper in field in morn. Miss Mittie Fugler and Hilda Day here today.
Sun. 20th. Bright, nearly clear, and dry and pleasant. I picked some strawberries for Wiley to take home with him and some for Carmel and Marion and Charles in morn. Willie and children walked to SS in eve. Dr. Magruder here at 11 in morn to see Minnie and baby.
Mon. 21st. Bright but some clouds and dry but a damp SE breeze all day. Willie ran harrow (with Sandy) on his last planted corn to make it come up today. Ben finished barring off first planted corn by 10 1/2 in morn and broke ground in Sims' bottom balance of day. Some hands hoed corn today. I replanted watermelons in Sims' corner and cleaned off some new ground there, to put in potatoes, in morn and in eve too.
Tue. 22nd. Bright but cloudy some and windy from SE. Willie ran harrow today and Ben broke ground in Sims' bottom. I planted some squashes in garden and hoed some there in morn and I found a speckled hen setting on 12 eggs near spring and put the eggs under a Dom in Sandy's stable in eve.
Wed. 23rd. Cloudy and a high wind from E most of day and sprinkled rain several times in eve. Willie and Ben broke ground with both double teams today. I hoed strawberries and cut runners off them in morn and shelled some bread corn in eve.
Thu. 24th. It began to rain at 3 1/2 in morn and lasted all morn and quit at 12. We had a good soaking rain in all and needed too. I shelled some bread corn in morn and we shelled some pindars to plant. Willie fixed watergaps in eve and Ben cut down bushes and briars in patch E of here.
