SEPTEMBER 1915

Wed. Sept. 1st. Bright, nearly clear, and cool from N. Willie and Dud cut and stripped sorghum for Wiley today. Wiley cooking sorghum molasses and I got wood for Leah to wash early in morn and brought some tomatoes from patch and sold some pears to Ed Wells in morn.

Thu. 2nd. Bright and cool and no rain in sight. Willie and Dud cut and stripped sorghum for Wiley today and they finished cutting. I brought some tomatoes from field in morn and carried one bucket to Rena and sent one to Mrs. Lanehart by Marion and I packed in some corn by 11 1/2 and shucked corn in eve. Ida and her 2 youngest children came at dusk and here all night.

Fri. 3rd. Bright warm and no rain in sight. Willie and Dud cut and hauled sorghum for Wiley today. I brought some tomatoes and eggplant from field early in morn and measured up 3 bu of pears for Ed Wells and he left them here till on Monday and Willie and Marion and I brought in some corn from patch E of here in eve and winnowed a p'k of bread corn (old corn too).

Sat. 4th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. Willie and Dud pulled and hauled a load of corn from Gate cut in morn and Willie rode Sandy and ---- rode Frilby to town in eve and Dud and Marion drove our wagon and mules to town in eve ---------and returned after dark. I got some persimmons and grabbled a few potatoes and brought in some tomatoes and packed some pepper too.

Sun. 5th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. Nellie at Lila's today and Carmel and Marion and Charles and Wiley and I walked to Wiley's and back just after dinner and all went to SS in eve but Charles and me. Ida and all of her 3 children came here from Lewis' late in eve and stayed all night.

Mon. 6th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. Dud cut wood today out beyond oat patch. Willie drove Sandy and Julia mule to Pinckneyville and returned at dusk with Sims. I let Ed Wells have 4 bu of pears in morn and he owes $1.30 on them.

Tue. 7th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. Dud hauled boards and wood from beyond oat patch today. Willie stacked the boards. I brought in some tomatoes from field in morn.

Wed. 8th. Cloudy and a damp breeze from SE all day and sprinkled rain some in morn and we had a good rain here at 3 1/2 to 4 in eve and bright late in eve. Dud hauled boards and wood from the oat patch till rain in eve and got wet. I got some okra and tomatoes in morn. Mrs. Flinn and Elma here in eve to see about Elma boarding here.

Thu. 9th. Bright and warm most of day but rained around in thunder showers in eve and sprinkled here some. Dud hauled wood in morn and he and Willie pulled and hauled in a load of corn from Gate cut in eve and got wet too. I put up a rope shelf at the well in morn and brought in some tomatoes.

Fri. 10th. Bright and warm most of day but rained around in thunder showers in eve and we had a hard little shower at 3 in eve. Willie and Dud didn't work in morn but they pulled and hauled in a load of corn from Gate cut in eve. Little Wiley drove Hal to town in eve and carried Sims to town and brought Bernice from the college.

Sat. 11th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. Willie and Marion drove Sandy to town in morn and Willie rode Sandy on creek to check cattle in eve. I grabbled some potatoes on hilltop of Cherry cut and brought 2 buckets of tomatoes from field in morn and carried one bucket to Rena by 11 in morn.

Sun. 12th. Bright and warm most of day and no rain here but a thunder cloud passed around E from SE (and near too) at 3 to 4 in eve. All got ready to go to SS in eve but the cloud backed them out. Miss Emma Flinn brought Miss Elma out here in eve and Chunk and Cap D ate supper here.

Mon. 13th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight today. Willie and Dud pulled corn all day and left it in field. I hoed onions in NW corner of garden early in morn and brought in a bucket of tomatoes and some okra.

Tue. 14th. Bright and very warm till 12 and a thunder cloud came up from S at 12 1/2 and we had a good hard rain till 1 1/2 and needed too. Willie and Dud and Jim Stewart pulled and hauled in corn all day. I brought 2 buckets of tomatoes from field and carried 1 bucket to Wiley's by 10 in morn and shucked corn by 11 1/4.

Wed. 15th. Bright and warm all morn and rained around in thunder showers most of eve and we had 3 showers here at 1 1/2 to 4. Willie and Dud and Jim S. pulled and hauled corn all day and got wet in eve and Dud drove the wagon to schoolhouse for Elma and children at 4 1/2. I cleaned off sticks and bean vines in NE corner of garden and made rows to plant turnips in morn.

Thu. 16th. Bright and warm most of day from SE and no rain here but thundered far off in eve. Willie had headache in morn and he and Dud dug pindars in eve. I planted 3 rows of kale in garden early in morn and brought 2 buckets of tomatoes from field and carried 1 bucket to Mrs. Lanehart by 10 1/4 in morn and Willie and I shucked corn by 11. I cut some okra pods for seed in eve and shelled some pole beans (dry).

Fri. 17th. Bright and warm in morn and rained around some in eve and we had a hard sprinkle here at 2 1/2. Willie and Dud pulled and hauled in corn all day. I brought 2 buckets of tomatoes from patch in morn and carried one bucket to Wiley's and I hoed over Irish potatoes where I had cucumbers in field early in morn. I let Ed Wells have 1 bu pears at 2 3/4 in eve.

Sat. 18th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. Willie drove Sandy to town in morn and returned at 3 1/2 in eve. I picked some pepper in field early in morn (and sent it to Mrs. Lanehart by Marion late in eve) and I grabbled some potatoes on hilltop of Cherry cut by 10 1/4 in morn and shucked corn by 11 1/2.

Sun. 19th. Bright and warm most of day and a thunder cloud came up from N at 2 in eve but did not rain here. Willie and Minnie and Carmel and Marion went to SS in eve and Bros Ellis and Harrel came out and preached in eve and again at night and both went back to town. Misses Emma and Elma Flinn came late in eve and Miss Emma went back home.

Mon. 20th. Bright and warm all day and no rain in sight. Willie and Dud pulled corn all day. I planted some turnips in garden early in morn and brought some tomatoes from field in morn and I brought some okra from patch in eve. Bros Ellis and Harrel preached at SS at night and all went but Willie and Nellie and me and Charles and Carl.

Tue. 21st. Cloudy all morn and bright in eve and cool from N. ----and quite cool. Willie and Dud pulled and hauled in corn till late in eve. I planted some turnips in garden and bedded out some limbs on the September fig tree and I let Ed Wells have 2 bu of pears and he owes 80 cts. on them. I drew water for washing in eve. Bros Ellis and Harrel ate supper here and preached at SS at night and all went but Nellie and me and Charles and Carl.

Wed. 22nd. Bright and cool from NE. Willie and Dud pulled and hauled in corn today. I got wood and water for Leah to wash early in morn and grabbled some potatoes and brought some tomatoes from field and shucked corn by 11 1/2 and brought in some okra in eve and got wood and water and fed. I arose with vertigo and sick stomach and took one pill before breakfast which worked me well in eve and I felt better. All went to preaching at night but Charles and Carl and me and they closed the meeting.

Thu. 23rd. Cloudy some all day and cool from NE. Willie and Dud pulled and hauled in corn today. I hoed and pulled grass out of strawberries in morn and gathered some Kiefer pears and some in hollow N of cow pen in eve.

Fri. 24th. Cloudy some all day and began to rain slowly at 4 in eve and lasted till after night and a pretty good rain (from SE) and needed too. Willie and Dud and "Ross" pulled and hauled in corn all day and got nearly wet late in eve. I picked grass out of strawberries early in morn and grabbled some potatoes on hilltop of Cherry cut and let Ed Wells have 2 1/2 bu of pears (which he owes for) by 11 1/2 and I shucked corn in eve and got wood and water and fed.

Sat. 25th. Bright, nearly clear, and warm and no rain in sight. Willie drove Sandy to town in morn and hunted cattle on creek in eve. I picked grass out of strawberries in morn and finished last of them and brought in some okra from patch in eve.

Sun. 26th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. I rode Sandy in field early in morn and brought home some tomatoes and eggplants and I walked to Wiley's and back in morn. All went to SS in eve but Nellie and me and Marion. Lilah and Bernice ate supper here.

Mon. 27th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. Willie and Dud pulled corn all day. I dug pindars on hilltop of Cherry cut most of morn and got 6 p'ks and I made a scaffold in flower yard in eve and put the pindars on it and shucked a bbl of ears of bread corn in eve and grabbled some potatoes on hilltop of Cherry cut late in eve.

Tue. 28th. Bright and warm. Willie and Dud pulled and hauled corn today. I dug pindars in NW side of Cherry cut in morn and got 6 p'ks and I shelled corn and shucked 6 p'ks of bread corn in eve.

Wed. 29th. Cloudy and a damp wind from NE and began to rain slowly at 2 1/2 in eve and wind high from NE and rain continued all eve and night too and wind broke off pecan limbs and blew down great many pecans late in eve and early in night and blew down garden pickets and cows ate up garden in night. Willie and Dud pulled and hauled corn till 3 in eve and got nearly wet and Dud drove wagon to schoolhouse for Elma and children at 3 1/2 in eve.

Thu. 30th. Bright and pleasant form NW. Willie and I picked up pecans most of day and got more than 2 bu of big ones. Elma and Carmel drove Sandy to school in morn.
