SEPTEMBER 1914

Tue. Sep. 1st. Bright and warm and dry and no rain in sight. Willie hauled picket timbers from NW of here with the mules today. Dud cut and split pine wood in field. I hoed part of turnips in garden in morn.

Wed. 2nd. Bright and warm all day and no rain but a thunder cloud in sight in SW late in eve. Willie rived pickets near old barn and Dud cut pine wood today. Marion picked whip peas in patch E of here today. I hoed in garden in morn and picked some dry butter beans in eve.

Thu. 3rd. Bright and warm till 11 1/2 in morn but clouded up and we had a hard and good shower with some thunder and wind till 12 and we had a little shower at 5 in eve. Dud cut pine wood and Willie rived pickets in morn and laid foundation for a Privy in eve. Marion picked whip peas in morn and helped Willie in eve. I hoed strawberries and finished last of garden by 10 in morn and I picked some dry butter beans and saved some okra seeds at 10 to 11 and again in eve.

Fri. 4th. Bright and warm most of day and no rain here but rained in sight in eve with thunder. Dud split pine wood today and Willie worked on the Privy all day and finished all but the door. Marion picked whip peas in morn and helped Willie in eve. I picked some dry butter beans in morn and finished them and helped Willie some in eve.

Sat. 5th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. Willie drove Sandy to town in morn and returned at 1 in eve. I cut up good deal of stove wood and brought in 3 turns of corn from patch E of here in morn and I brought some tomatoes from field in eve and killed 2 chickens in eve. Nellie and Minnie cooked today for tomorrow's dinner at SS.

Sun. 6th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight today. Marion and I drove Sandy to buggy to schoolhouse and all the rest went in Wiley's Surry and Bro Herring preached 2 sermons there and they had dinner on ground. I walked home by 12 1/2 and the rest came late in eve.

Mon. 7th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. Willie sick today. Dud and Sophia picked whip peas in patch E of here today. I hoed over all of strawberries in garden by 9 1/2 in morn and let Cap D have 3 p'ks of pears and he and Jack D and Viola and Burline Curry dined here and went to Wiley's late in eve. Willie and Minnie and Carmel and Marion walked to SS at night and Bro Herring preached there.

Tue. 8th. Bright and warm and dry and no rain in sight. Dud and Sophia picked whip peas in patch E of here today. Willie walled up shed on W side of old kitchen for hay today. I hoed in garden in morn. Willie and Minnie and Carmel and Marion walked to SS at night and Bro Herring preached there and Bro Ellis came here for all night.

Wed. 9th. Bright and warm and dry till 3 1/2 in eve and rained around in thunder showers till 4 1/2 but only dropped here. Bro Ellis walked to Lanehart's and dined at Wiley's and preached at SS at night and went to town. Dud and Sophia picked whip peas in patch E of here today. I cut up stove wood and picked some pepper in field in morn and shelled some dry butter beans in eve. Willie and Minnie and Carmel and Marion walked to SS to preaching at night.

Thu. 10th. Bright and warm and dry till 3 in eve and rained around in thunder showers at 3 to 5 in eve but only dropped here. Willie and Minnie drove Sandy to town in morn and returned at 1 in eve. Dud and Sophia picked peas in morn and didn't work in eve. I hoed some in garden and picked some dry butter beans in morn and shelled some in eve. Minnie and Carmel and I walked to SS at night and Bro Ellis preached there and staid all night at Lewis'.

Fri. 11th. Bright and warm and dry all day and no rain near but lightning in E and SE at night. Willie and Dud put up 2 wires around cane in SW corner of patch E of here in morn - to put calves in the patch. I picked some dry butter beans in pumpkin hollow in morn. Bro Ellis walked here from Lewis' in morn and here till late in eve and preached at SS at night and Allen Miller drove Sandy to our buggy and took Bro Ellis to town in night and brought buggy back. Willie and Minnie and Carmel and Marion went to preaching at night.

Sat. 12th. Bright and warm and dry and no rain in sight. Willie and Nellie drove Sandy to town in morn and returned at 1 1/2 in eve. Dago drove Wiley's team to wagon to town in morn and carried 3 bbls of sorghum molasses (Wiley's) and brought back a bbl of flour and a sack of salt for us. I brought a bucket of tomatoes (ripe and green) and some pepper from field by 10 in morn and was feverish and took a dose of Livertone at 10 in morn.

Sun. 13th. Bright and warm and dry and no rain in sight. Willie and Carmel and Marion walked to SS in eve. Nellie and Charles walked to Wiley's in eve.

Mon. 14th. Bright and warm and dry all morn and cloudy some all eve and a damp breeze from S and thundered far off. Willie rode Sandy to hunt our cattle in morn and picked whip peas on H ridge in eve. Marion and I picked peas there in morn, and Dud too, all day.

Tue. 15th. Bright and warm and dry and no rain in sight. Willie picked peas on H ridge today and I picked there till 10 in morn and shucked corn by 11 1/2 and shelled some dry butter beans in eve. Dud didn't work today.

Wed. 16th. Bright, nearly clear, and dry and cool at night. Willie and Dud began to pull corn in morn early and pulled boat corn in patch E of here and H ridge and some E of there and left it in field. I picked some dry butter beans in morn and shelled some in eve and drew water for tomorrow's washing.

Thu. 17th. Clear and a cool breeze from NE all day and dry. Willie and Dud moved all of old corn into old cotton house early in morn and we killed at least 60 rats from newborn by 9 1/2 in morn and Willie and Dud pulled corn in field balance of day and left it there. I got wood and water for Leah to wash early in morn and picked some dry pole beans in garden by 10 and packed and shucked corn till 11 1/2 and shelled some dry butter beans in eve.

Fri. 18th. Cloudy and a cool breeze from NE in morn and rained 2 little showers in eve, enough to lay dust well, and clear and calm at night. Willie and Jim Stewart hauled corn all day and got in all pulled (in 9 loads) and got nearly wet in the rain. I cut up good deal of wood in morn and gathered most of late pears (about 3 p'ks) out NW of cow pen and sent some to Rena and I shelled some butter beans in eve (dry).

Sat. 19th. Cloudy from SW and sprinkled rain some in morn and some in eve too and thunder showers passed around some in eve. Willie drove Sandy to town in morn and returned at 1 1/2 in eve. I got some persimmons and grabbled some yams on H ridge in morn and cut up good deal of wood too.

Sun. 20th. Bright most of morn and a thunder cloud came up from SE at 4 1/2 in eve and we had a good hard rain till 5 1/4 with some wind and thunder and rain was needed very badly. I walked to Wiley's and back at 1 1/2 to 3. Willie and Minnie and Carmel and Marion walked to SS in eve and Bro Ellis preached there. Earl took him to town late in eve.

Mon. 21st. Bright and warm in morn and thunder cloud came up from SE at 4 1/2 in eve and we had a good hard rain till 5 1/4 which wet ground well. Willie and Dud threshed all of our whip peas by 3 1/2 in eve in old kitchen. I picked all of pole beans in garden and threw out the sticks and planted 1/2 of the ground in turnips in morn. Miss Lottie Kaigler began and taught school today.

Tue. 22nd. Bright but cloudy some all day and rained around in thunder showers some in eve but only dropped a little here. Miss Lottie K and Carmel drove Sandy to school in morn and kept him there till in eve. Willie made an ax handle and put in the new ax. Dud had a toothache last night and today and didn't work. I planted some turnips in garden early in morn and shucked some bread corn (new) by 12 and shelled some in eve.

Wed. 23rd. Cloudy some all day and very little sunshine and sprinkled rain several times in morn and in eve till 5 and rained steadily from 5 to 8 and some through the night. Willie and Dud sawed and split wood in field in morn and Dud rode Julia mule to town in eve to have a tooth pulled. I shelled some bread corn early in morn and put on a scaffold in flower yard to dry but sun didn't shine but little. We had a cool wind all night from the north.

Thu. 24th. Cloudy and cool from N till 10 in morn and clear and a very cool wind from N all day. Dud didn't work today. Willie nailed together ends for 2 hay sheds in morn and fixed water gaps at the creek in eve. I cut up good deal of wood early in morn and sunned and winnowed some bread corn.

Fri. 25th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool from N all day. Willie repaired wire fence on SE corner of our field in morn and Dud didn't work in morn. Willie and Dud pulled corn in eve. I packed 8 turns of manure from new barn and put in water furrows of 11 rows of turnips (planted last Mon and Tue) in garden by 10 in morn and I picked some pepper in field by 12 and gave some of the pepper to Miss Lottie K to take home in eve.

Sat. 26th. Clear and cool from N. Willie and Dud hauled in corn all morn and Willie and Nellie drove Sandy to town in eve. I rode Sandy to Barber's mill in morn and returned at 10 with 7 1/2 p'ks of meal and I shucked corn by 12 and I grabbled some yams on H ridge in eve and picked some peas there for pigs.

Sun. 27th. Bright and cool from E. Wiley went to his Pa's in morn and Rena and all of her children and Nora dined here. I got some persimmons in field in morn. Willie and Minnie drove Sandy to Mr. A.E. Fugler's in eve - he and his wife both sick in bed.

Mon. 28th. Bright and pleasant from E. Willie and Dud pulled corn all day. I hoed in garden most of morn and grabbled some yams on H ridge and picked some whip peas there for pigs in eve.

Tue. 29th. Cloudy and no sun and cool from NE. Willie and Dud hauled in corn all morn and Willie in eve too and Dud rode Sandy to town in eve and had a tooth pulled. I dug pindars in far part of field in morn and some in eve too and got 8 p'ks in all.

Wed. 30th. Cloudy and no sun and cool from E of N and misted rain in morn and some in eve too and at night. Willie and Dud and Sophia picked peas most of day and hauled them in late in eve. I dug pindars in morn and some in eve and got 2 big bu. in all.
