SEPTEMBER 1913

Mon. Sep. 1st. Bright and warm in morn and rained around in thunder showers some in eve but only dropped here. I brought home tomatoes on Josie from field early in morn and gathered 5 p'ks of pears for Martin C in morn and gathered 4 p'ks for Helen D at 2 in eve. She and her 2 youngest children here today. Willie drove Josie to town in eve to get ice for Buddy.

Tue. 2nd. Bright and warm most of day and no rain here but rained far off late in eve. Willie picked peas today and Ben cut molasses wood in field. I hoed pepper and picked grass out of old tomatoes in field in morn and picked some dry butter beans in eve.

Wed. 3rd. Bright and warm and dry most of day and rained around some in eve but none here. Willie drove Sandy to town early in morn and brought Sims out here by 11 and he took him back to town late in eve. Ben cut molasses wood today in field. I got some tomatoes and okra and butter beans early in morn and gathered 1 bu of pears and put in a bbl for preserving.

Thu. 4th. Bright and dry and --- all morn and rained around in thunder showers some in eve but only --- here at 2 1/2 in eve. Willie walked to Wiley's and ---- morn and B C came back with Willie and here till late in eve. Ben cut molasses wood today. I got wood and drew water for Hannah to wash early in morn and sawed some limbs out of a pecan tree just E of our house by 10 1/2 in morn and gathered some pears in hollow N of new cow pen in eve.

Fri. 5th. A thunder cloud came up from E at 3 1/4 in morn and we had a pretty good rain till 4 1/2 - enough to make mud - and quit and bright and warm most of day. Willie picked whip peas today. Ben cut and split molasses wood in morn and cut some stove wood in pasture in eve. I planted some turnips in garden in morn and shucked corn and drew water and fed and helped to milk in eve.

Sat. 6th. Bright and warm most of day and rained around in thunder showers some in eve but only dropped a little here. Willie drove Sandy to town in morn. Ben hauled 4 loads of wood from pasture in morn. I picked grass and weeds out of old tomatoes in morn and brought home 1 1/2 p'ks by 10 3/4 and I shucked corn and drew water and fed and helped to milk in eve.

Sun. 7th. Bright and warm most of day and no rain here but rained around in thunder showers some in eve. I carried 1/2 bu of late pears to Wiley's in morn and returned at 11 1/2. Nellie and Charles and Carl walked to Wiley's in eve and Willie and Minnie and Carmel and Marion went to schoolhouse in eve and Bro Hopper preached there and came here for the night.

Mon. 8th. Bright and warm till 3 in eve and a thunder cloud came up from S of E at 3 1/2 and we had a good hard shower till 4 1/4 which made ground muddy some. Bro Hopper left at 8 1/2 in morn and Willie and Ben cut wood out N of old orchard most of day. I let Ed Wells have one bu of pears early in morn and cut up wood and drew water and shucked corn by 12 and got some okra and butter beans in eve just before rain.

Tue. 9th. Cloudy some all morn and a damp breeze from S of E and rained in showers from SE at 11 1/2 in morn till 2 in eve - enough to make ground muddy - and rained some slowly after dark. Willie and Ben cut and sawed wood out N of old orchard today. I brought some tomatoes from field early in morn and Carmel and Charles and I got a bucket of muscadines in calf pasture by 12. We killed some rats at new barn at 1 1/2 --- in eve. Nellie at Lanehart's most ----. Mrs. L was sick in bed.

Wed. 10th. Warm and cloudy some all day and sprinkled a little here at dark. Willie and Ben cut and split wood out N of orchard today. I picked grass out of strawberries in morn and grabbled some yams in patch E of here in eve. Willie and Carmel and Marion walked to prayer meeting at night.

Thu. 11th. Bright, but some clouds all morn and a damp breeze from SE and began to rain in showers at 3 in eve, and lasted till 4 1/2 and a good rain in all and needed very much. Willie and Ben sawed and split wood in pasture till the rain in eve. Wiley here most of eve and put up steps to front gallery.

Fri. 12th. Bright but cloudy some all morn and we had a hard shower from SE at 1 in eve and another at 3 and dropped some late in eve. Willie and Ben cut and split wood out NW of old orchard in morn and didn't work in eve. Wiley put up a pair of steps to kitchen and one to dining room in morn. I got wood for Hannah to wash early in morn and let Ed Wells have 5 p'ks of pears and he still owes me 95 cts.

Sat. 13th. Cloudy and a damp SE wind all day and rained in little sprinkles all morn and we had a hard rain at 1 to 2 in eve and began again slowly late in eve and lasted till in the night. Willie and Marion drove Sandy to town in morn and returned at 12. I got wood and water early in morn and I got some okra and butter beans by 9 1/2 and got nearly wet and I grabbled some yams in patch E of here in eve.

Sun. 14th. Cloudy all day and rained in little showers from S most of day. All of us home all day. None went to SS in eve. Bernice and Nora here in eve.

Mon. 15th. Bright and pleasant from SW and no rain today. Willie and Ben sawed and split wood in pasture today. I picked and cut grass out of strawberries in morn and shucked some bread corn and grabbled some yams in eve. Ed Wells got last of pears in eve and owes 35 cts on them.

Tue. 16th. Bright and pleasant in morn and cloudy all eve and thundered far off but no rain here. Willie and Ben sawed and split wood in pasture today. I cut and pulled grass out of strawberries all morn and finished them and I shucked some bread corn and fed and helped to milk in eve. Mrs. J Mathis and sister Lottie and baby here today and left late in eve.

Wed. 17th. Cloudy and a damp breeze from ---- E and sprinkled rain several times through the day and some at night. Willie and Ben and I topped the pecan trees just E of our house early in morn and Willie cut up the limbs for wood and Ben hauled wood from the pasture balance of day. I packed 2 turns of stable manure in garden and set out the Henderson onions by 11 1/2 and I shucked and shelled some bread corn in eve and grabbled some yams in eve.

Thu. 18th. Cloudy and wet early in morn but bright and pleasant from NW after 10 in morn. Willie and Wiley and Gordon tore the old roof off Nellie's room early in morn and put a new one on by late in eve. Ben hauled wood from the pasture all day with the mules. I got some okra and butter beans early in morn and packed 2 turns of stable manure in garden and set out 4 rows of little white onions by 11 1/4 and I shelled some bread corn in eve.

Fri. 19th. Bright and pleasant from NW. Willie rived pickets for flower yard today. Ben hauled wood from pasture all day. I got nails out of old shingles on E side of Nellie's room early in morn and shelled and winnowed some bread corn by 11 1/2 and I shucked corn in eve and Carmel and I got some muscadines in calf pasture.

Sat. 20th. Cloudy some all morn and a thunder cloud passed around SW of here from NW at 12 to 1 but only sprinkled a little here and turned cool from NW and clear late in eve and at night and cool from NW. Willie rived pickets in morn and finished and Ben rode Sandy to Ogden's mill early in morn and returned at 12 1/2 with 6 p'ks of meal. I hoed late tomatoes in field and brought home a sack of pine straw by 10 1/2 and I grabbled some yams in eve and fed and milked.

Sun. 21st. Clear and quite cool from W of N all day. Nellie and Marion went to Wiley's in morn and all went to SS in eve but me.

Mon. 22nd. Clear and cool from E. Willie and Ben and Dick pulled corn (our first) all day in Gate cut and left it in field. I hoed all of garden except the strawberries in morn and shucked corn and grabbled some yams and got wood and water and fed and helped to milk in eve.

Tue. 23rd. Clear and pleasant from SE. Willie and Ben and Dick pulled corn all day and left it in the field. Marion and Charles and I dug pindars on hilltop of Cherry cut all morn ---- and got about 2 bu and I shucked corn and got wood and water in eve.

Wed. 24th. Bright and pleasant from SE. Willie and Ben and Dick hauled in corn all day. Marion and I dug pindars on hilltop of Cherry cut all morn and got about 2 bu and I shucked the first of our new corn in eve and grabbled some yams and fed and milked in eve. Willie and Minnie and Carmel and Marion walked to prayer meeting at night.

Thu. 25th. Bright early in morn and clouded up from SE at 9 in morn and rained in little showers at 3 1/2 to 4 3/4 in eve, enough to make mud. Willie and Ben and Dick pulled corn till the rain in eve and left it in field. Marion and I dug pindars all morn and got about 2 bu and I gathered the last of pears in hollow N of cow pen in eve.

Fri. 26th. Cloudy and cool from S all morn and began to rain in little showers at 3 in eve and lasted balance of eve and all night from SE. Willie and Ben and Dick hauled in corn all day till 4 3/4 in eve and got wet. Marion and I dug pindars all morn and got 2 bu. I shucked corn and got wood and water and Willie and I milked in rain in eve.

Sat. 27th. It rained slowly all last night from SE and quit at daylight and began again at 7 1/2 in morn and lasted till 11 1/2 and quit again till 3 in eve and began again at 3 and lasted till nearly dark and quit again for all night. We marked some pigs in rain early in morn and got nearly wet and I chopped up wood at 11 to 12 and grabbled some yams in eve and got wood and water and fed and milked in rain most of time. Willie rode Sandy to town in eve.

Sun. 28th. Cloudy and rained in little sprinkles most of day and ground very wet. Bernice here most of morn and Nellie and Bernice and Carmel drove Sandy to Lanehart's in eve.

Mon. 29th. Cloudy and rained nearly all day and in hard showers part of time from SW. We did nothing but put hogs in Gate cut field early in morn and get wood and feed and milk.

Tue. 30th. Cloudy and no sun and rained nearly all day and hard part of time from NW. We did nothing but get wood and feed and milk today.
