SEPTEMBER 1900

Sat. Sep. 1st. Bright and quite warm till 3 in eve and rained around very near in thunder showers at 3 1/2 to 5 1/2 but only sprinkled a little here. Pa picked in his cotton by front gate in morn and walked to Clara's and back in eve. Willie picked cotton in Gate cut till 3 1/2 in eve and rain stopped him. I picked there too in eve till 3 and got a sk of corn in Cherry cut by 3 1/2. I drove Joe to our old high buggy to Cohen's in morn and got 1 bu meal and 1 gal coal oil on credit and some other things which I paid for and got home at 11.

Sun. 2nd. Bright and warm most of day and no rain here but rained around in thunder showwers most of eve after 3 from N of E. I rode Joe in Luckett field early in morn and on to Wiley's and rode over his field to see his crop. Nellie walked to Wiley's in morn at 7 1/2 and Wiley and Rena and Bernice drove Fanny mule to Clara's in morn and returned late in eve. Nellie walked to Lewis' and back in eve. I got a sk of corn in orchard in eve and gathered some pears and put in 3 bbls in barn (to mellow).

Mon. 3rd. It rained a little shower last night and bright and warm from E today and no rain here but showers in sight in eve. Pa picked cotton in his by front gate most of day and Willie and I picked in Gate cut most of day. Nellie at Wiley's most of day helping him to whitewash his house. Willie and I milked after sunset.

Tue. 4th. Bright and warm and dry from E and no rain here but little showers in sight in eve. Pa picked in his cotton by front gate most of day and Willie and I picked in Persimmon cut and Pine corner most of day. Nellie at Wiley's all day helping them to paint and whitewash their house. Willie and I milked after sunset. I had a dull headache all day and all night too and slept but little.

Wed. 5th. Bright and warm and dry from E and no rain in sight today. Pa picked cotton in his by front gate most of day and Willie and I picked on NE corner of Persimmon cut till 10 3/4 in morn and on NE corner of Gate cut most of eve. I gathered a sk of corn in old cowpen corner at 11 to 11 1/4 in morn and another sk at 1 in eve and shucked it for bread at 1 1/4 to 1 1/2. Nellie at Wiley's most of day helping to paint and whitewash house. Mrs. Henderson here at 11 to 12 and Willie went to Wiley's for Nellie. The headache was bad on me early in morn and I was sick at my stomach, but it got better after I drank some coffee, but lasted all day and all night too but I slept well at night.

Thu. 6th. Bright and warm and dry from N of E and no rain in sight today. Pa picked cotton in his in hollow in orchard today. Willie and I picked in Pine corner and Persimmon cut till 11 in morn and in Gate cut in eve. Effie and Bernice and Lila and Edna here most of day. My headache left me today entirely.

Fri. 7th. Bright and warm and dry but wind pretty high from N of E and dark clouds passed over at 11 1/2 in morn till 3 in eve. Pa picked cotton in his in hollow in orchard today. Willie and I picked on hilltop of Luckett field (our first there) till 10 3/4 in morn and Willie awhile in eve. Lewis went for a Dr. for Cousin Mary at 10 1/2 in morn and Nellie went there then and I walked to Lewis' too at 11 and Cousin Mary gave birth to a 7 months boy at 12 and it died at 1. I came home at 4 in eve (after Dr. Catchings came and left) and I hauled our cotton from Luckett field late in eve with Joe and cart. Nellie stayed all night at Lewis'.

Sat. 8th. Cloudy all day and a damp wind from SE and sprinkled rain several times in morn and in eve too but not enough to wet ground on top for it is quite dry. We didn't pick cotton today. Ray came at sunrise and dug a grave in orchard for the little child and we buried it at 9 in morn. Nellie came home from Lewis' in morn at 9 1/2 and brought Bernice and kept her here till 2 1/4 and carried her home and Nellie and Rena walked to Lewis' and back in eve. Clara stayed at Lewis' at night. I shucked 2 sks of corn (from old cowpen corner) for bread at 1 to 2 and cut up good deal of wood and made some new hens' nests in eve.

Sun. 9th. Bright most of day with a damp breeze from SE and sprinkled rain at 1. Willie cut my hair early in morn and I shaved and I walked to Lewis' at 8 to 10 in morn. Wiley and Rena and baby here at 9 1/2 in morn till 2 1/2 in eve and they and Nellie and Minnie walked to Lewis' in eve and Willie rode Joe to Seymour's in eve. Pa walked to Clara's in morn and returned late in eve.

Mon. 10th. Cloudy most of morn and sprinkled rain several times from S or E of S and bright and warm all eve. Pa picked cotton most of day in cut by front gate (his cotton) and Willie and I picked cotton most of day in Luckett field and I drove Joe to cart to Luckett field at 1 1/4 in eve and we brought our cotton home on cart late in eve. Willie and I milked after sunset.

Tue. 11th. Bright and warm all day and dry too but some dark spots of clouds most of eve and rained around in little showers, in sight, and quite warm all eve. Pa picked cotton most of day in his by front gate. Willie and I picked most of day in Gate cut. I put some bread corn (some in ear and some shelled) on Pa's gallery roof

to dry in eve.

Wed. 12th. Bright and warm and dry from E but some dark clouds in eve, but no rain in sight today. Pa picked cotton in hollow in orchard most of day. Willie picked in Persimmon cut on NE part all day and I picked there in eve. I picked on E end of Gate cut in morn. I had a headache most of last night and all of today but it got better late in eve but lasted all night. Willie and I shelled some bread corn at 1 to 2 and put it on potatoe house in 2 sks to dry.

Thu. 13th. Cloudy some all day and a dark rain cloud E of here (in sight) all day but no rain here and sun shined part of day, but dimly and wind from E of N. Pa picked cotton in hollow in orchard today and Willie and I picked in Persimmon cut and in Pine corner most of day. The headache left me entirely after dinner.

Fri. 14th. Bright, nearly clear, and sun shined warm all day but a dry breeze from N and no signs of rain today. Pa picked cotton in his by front gate today and Willie and I picked in hollow in Pine corner and in new 3rd Cane hollow most of day. Nellie kept Bernice here all day - Rena washed today.

Sat. 15th. Bright and warm and dry and wind from W and no rain in sight today. Pa picked a little cotton in morn and walked to Clara's and back in eve. Willie picked cotton in Luckett field in morn and left it there in sacks. I rode Joe to Thornton Barber's in morn early with Wiley and carried 2 1/2 bu corn (our first) and got it ground and we got home at 10 in morn and I made a new lowells girth for my saddle at 11 to 12. Willie and Minnie drove Joe to Wiley's buggy to Mrs. James' in eve. I hauled 2 cart loads of wood from NW of Wiley's, with Fanny mule, in eve and milked late in eve. Wiley rode Goulden to his Pa's in eve and Rena and baby stayed here at night.

Sun. 16th. Bright and warm and dry and no rain in sight today. Rena and baby here till late in eve. Lewis brought our papers early in morn. I got a few figs and muscadines for Bernice in morn and some Persimmons in our field in eve. Nellie and I milked late in eve. Willie and Minnie returned from Mrs. James' at dark.

Mon. 17th. Bright, nearly clear, and quite warm and dry with a breeze from N most of day and a cloud in sight in SE late in eve and lightened there at night. Pa picked cotton in his by front gate most of day. I drove Joe to cart to Luckett field early in morn and Willie and I picked cotton there, on hilltop all morn, and got home at 12 and we picked all eve in Gate cut.

Tue. 18th. Bright, nearly clear, and warm and dry and no rain in sight. Pa picked cotton in hollow in orchard (his) most of day. Willie and I picked all morn in Luckett field and brought our cotton home with Joe and cart at 11 3/4 and we picked all eve in Gate cut.

Wed. 19th. Bright and warm and dry most of day but a damp breeze from S and thundered and rained around in SW and W in sight at 1 1/2 to 3 in eve and we had a little shower at 5 1/4 in eve from S. Pa picked cotton most of day in hollow in orchard. I drove Joe to cart to Luckett field early in morn and Willie and I dug pinders there all morn and we finished about 1/2 of patch (or more) and got about 1 bbl and got home at 12 and we picked cotton in Gate cut till 5 in eve and rain ran us home then.

Thu. 20th. Bright and warm but some dark clouds most of morn and a thunder cloud passed around W from S at 10 1/2 to 12 in morn but no rain here then and another one passed around at 2 to 4 1/2 in eve and rained a little shower here and we had some hard showers just after dark. Pa picked cotton by front gate in morn and part of eve. Willie rode Joe to Elmwood and Surgett's early in morn and got Ed Ward (Jr.) and Robert Earlycut to haul our 2 first bales of cotton to Cohen's and the last load left here at 2 and Willie rode Joe to Cohen's in eve to see about the cotton but they ginned only 1 bale and Willie returned at dark. I picked cotton in Gate cut till 10 in morn and threw back about 300 of cotton left in cotton house and cut up some wood in eve and Nellie and I milked late in eve. Wiley and Rena and baby dined here today.

Fri. 21st. Bright and warm and no rain here, but rained around some little late in eve. Pa picked cotton by front gate most of day. I rode Joe to Cohen's early in morn and sold our 2 first bales of cotton (weighing 478 and 500) to Cohen on account at 9 3/4 cts and paid up all of account but $16.30. The 2 wagons which hauled our cotton on yesterday brought the seed home in morn. Willie staid about the house in morn to put away the seed. I got home at 11 1/4. Willie and I picked cotton in Gate cut till 4 in eve and finished there and we picked on NE corner of Persimmon cut late in eve.

Sat. 22nd. Bright and warm all day from S and no rain. Pa walked to Clara's in morn and returned late in eve. Willie and I dug pinders in Luckett field till 10 3/4 and finished them and we picked peas (our first) in orchard most of eve and put them in flower pit in hull for seed. We got 85 lbs in all. Lucy washed here today.

Sun. 23rd. Bright and warm from SW and no rain in sight today, except a little cloud far off in SW at 4 in eve. I got some Persimmons in our field and grabbled some yams on hilltop of H ridge early in morn. Lewis here awhile in morn and West here most of day. Nellie and Rena and baby drove Fanny mule to B C's early in morn and returned late in eve. Cousin Gus and wife and baby came at 10 in morn and here balance of day and night too and Wiley dined here too. We walked to Wiley's and over his field too at 3 to 4 1/2 in eve.

Mon. 24th. Bright and warm and dry from S and no rain in sight. Cousin Gus and wife and baby walked down to Lewis' in morn and came back in eve and went home. Pa picked cotton by front gate most of day and Willie and I picked peas in orchard all day, after 8 in morn, and got 260 in all and put them in flower pit (for seed).

Tue. 25th. Bright and warm (very) and dry- wind from S but rained SW of here (in sight) late in eve. Pa picked in his cotton in hollow in orchard today. Willie and I picked peas in orchard all day and we got about 260 and put them in flower pit for seed. We looked for Mrs. Johnson (from Ashwood) to come here in morn but she didn't but she and Mrs. Whitehead came in eve.

Wed. 26th. Bright and very warm and dry most of day but thundered and rained around some at 3 3/4 to 5 1/2 in eve from S but only sprinkled here at 4. Pa picked cotton in hollow in orchard most of day and Willie and I picked peas in orchard most of day and got about 260 and put in flower pit for seed. Rena and baby here all day and Wiley dined here too. Nellie and Minnie drove old Bonnie to Mr. Andrew Fugler's early in morn and returned at dusk. Wiley had hands picking cotton for him on yesterday and on today too. He hauled his cotton on cart (home).

Thu. 27th. Bright and warm and dry - no rain in sight. Pa picked in his cotton by front gate today. Willie and I put our planting cotton seed in back of our cotton house and the cotton which was in back of house (about 400 lbs) we put in front early in morn and we picked cotton on hilltop of Cherry and Persimmon cuts most of day. I picked some peas in old cowpen corner for hogs late in eve. We picked all of peas in orchard for seed except a few near cow pen.

Fri. 28th. Bright and a little cool early in morn but a warm and dry day - wind from S. Pa picked in his cotton most of day and Willie and I picked most of day in Persimmon cut and in Pine corner. I picked some peas by cow pen for hogs late in eve. I had a dull headache all day and night too but slept pretty well at night.

Sat. 29th. Bright and cool early in morn but a warm and dry day -wind from N and no signs of rain. Pa picked cotton (for us) in Gate cut most of morn and walked to Clara's and back in eve. Willie and I picked cotton in Pine corner till 10 in morn and finished there and we picked in 3rd Cane hollow till 4 in eve and we picked some peas by cow pen for hogs late in eve and cut up some wood and milked cows. Nellie and Minnie washed in morn (Lucy didn't come).

Sun. 30th. Bright and warm and dry from NW. Minnie walked to Lewis in morn and returned late in eve. Buddy here most of day and Wiley and Rena and baby too. Seymour here awhile in morn.
