SEPTEMBER 1893

Fri. Sep. 1st. Bright and pleasant but very dry from N. P and R Veal and Bud here all day and we pumped and bored some in well and left a heavy weight on it and quit before sunset. Pa picked cotton all day on H ridge.

Sat. 2nd. Bright and pleasant but dry from N. P and R Veal here till after dinner and we broke off curbing trying to draw it out of well and had to quit till Monday. Pa picked cotton on H ridge awile in morn. I drove Hattie to cart to Cohen's in eve.

Sun. 3rd. Bright, pleasant and dry but warmer and cloudy some in eve. Dixie and Rena walked to Estina in morn and they and Miss Grace Chambers came back to Lewis' to Sunday School in eve. All of us there.

Mon. 4th. Bright but warm and showered around some in eve and dropped rain here. P and R Veal and 2 hands came in morn and we drew curbing from well and put it back in morn and worked all eve till nearly dark boring and pumping. Pa picked cotton on H ridge all day.

Tue. 5th. Cloudy and warm and thundered SW and W of here (near) late in eve but only sprinkled here at dusk. P and R Veal and 2 hands here most of day and finished well at 5 in eve. Pa picked some cotton and gathered some beans and Okra seed. Nellie and Rena walked to Estina in eve.

Wed. 6th. Cloudy and dropped rain some in morn and showered at 11 1/2 till 12 and dropped rain slowly all eve and night. Pa and Willie picked cotton on H ridge till 11 in morn. I drew all of water out of well (about 10 feet) and moved poles and board and dirt from around well all morn and awhile in eve. Dan here awhile in eve.

Thu. 7th. It rained all day with wind from NE and E and very stormy most of time and lasted all night - slowly (wind blew down sugar cane and corn badly). I made 2 saddle pads in morn. Nellie and I made 3 cotton picking sacks in eve and we got some wood in morn and some in eve. Bud here at night.

Fri. 8th. Cloudy and cool from N. Sun shined some at 10 to 3 in eve and drizzled rain late in eve and at night. Pa and I worked on Hattie's stable most of day. We put in a new pole plate and took out old one and took down E side and put it up again and fixed door. Bud and Willie went fox hunting in morn and Willie helped to work big road in eve.

Sat. 9th. Cloudy and cool and rained in drizzling showers - some in morn and some in eve from NW. I drew all of water out of well and made a cover for it in morn. Willie worked on big road in morn and went fox hunting in eve. Dan and Gussie dined here. I drove Hattie to buggy to town in eve and got a longer and smaller well rope and some other things from August.

Sun. 10th. Cloudy some but sun shined most of day and wind from W. I rode Hattie in cow pasture in morn to see stock. All of us but Pa walked to Lewis' in eve and held Sunday School.

Mon. 11th. Bright and warm from NW and thundered all eve in NW and NE but no rain here. Pa picked cotton most of day on H ridge and Willie and I picked there all eve. Willie worked on big road in morn and I rode Hattie to Stewart's place and got 3 pigs from Iler Bethley. Preston Veal came in morn with wagon and carried his boring machine to Primm's.

Tue. 12th. Bright and warm from W and thundered in E most of day but only dropped rain here late in eve. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton all day on H ridge. Dixie and Rena walked to Clara's in eve.

Wed. 13th. Bright and warm from SW and no rain. John Fosselman came early in morn and bought 5 head of cattle for $24 and took 2 and left other 3. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton most of day. We finished H ridge in morn and picked in Cane hollow in eve.

Thu. 14th. Foggy and wet till 10 and clear and very warm balance of day. Willie rode Salome to town in morn and got Dr. Cross to pull his 4 front teeth and returned at 11. Pa and I picked cotton all day and Willie some late in eve. We picked on hilltop of Cherry cut by pindars in morn and in cane bottom in eve.

Fri. 15th. Bright, nearly clear and warm. Pa and Willie picked cotton most of day in cane bottom (Pa finished hilltop of Cherry cut in eve). I picked cotton all morn and lay down with sick headache most of eve. I took it early in morn and vomited some late in eve and at night and slept but little.

Sat. 16th. Clear and warm and getting dry. My headache got better after breakfast and Pa, Willie and I picked cotton in morn in cane bottom. Henry Johnson brought 2 pigs early in morn. Willie rode Salome to town in eve and got his new teeth from Dr Cross. I drove Hattie to Cohen's in eve to buggy.

Sun. 17th. Clear and pleasant in shade but sunshine was quite warm. All of us home in morn. Dan and Lewis here awhile in morn and Lewis Miller came at 10 1/2 and stayed all night. All of us walked to Lewis' in eve to Sunday School. Mr. Hains dined here and went to Sunday School too.

Mon. 18th. Bright, cool early in morn but sunshine quite warm most of day and getting dry. Lewis Miller left early in morn and Pa, Willie and I picked cotton all day in cane bottom.

Tue. 19th. Bright, warm and dry. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton all day in cane bottom cut and we got about 340 pds today and about that on yesterday. Willie and I put some of our dry cattle and the 3 head of Fosselman's out on creek early in morn. Nellie and Ida drove Larry to Mr. D Chambers and there all day.

Wed. 20th. Bright and warm and dry. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton all day in cane bottom and we got about 350 pds.

Thu. 21st. Bright, warm and dry. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton most of day - we picked about 100 in cane bottom and finished that cut (1st time) and picked about 225 on W side of Cherry cut in new part. The 3 pigs which I got from Iler got out of a pen in yard and got into field but we got them into our calf pasture and Nellie, Dixie, Rena and I caught the small ones and put them back into the plank pen with the 2 which I got from Dook late in eve. Dixie and Rena drove up Cherry with hiefer calf in eve.

Fri. 22nd. Bright and warm and dry. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton most of day in theirs in new SW corner N of gully and we got about 390 pds. I grabbled some potatoes (yams) and stirred up my cotton in new house at 10 1/4 to 11 3/4. Nellie, Dixie and Rena washed in morn and they drew all of water from well and cleaned it out in eve.

Sat. 23rd. Bright and warm and dry. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton till 11 1/2 in morn in theirs N of gully in new SW corner. I rode Hattie to Cohen's in eve. Willie went to Lewis' late in eve and stayed there all night with Lewis and Gussie. Cousin Mary and children at Uncle Gus's.

Sun. 24th. Foggy till 9 1/2 and bright, warm and dry balance of day. All of us home in morn and all walked to Seymour's in eve and held Sunday School there.

Mon. 25th. Cloudy (sun shined some) and thundered and showered around most of eve but only rained a slow sprinkle here at 5 1/4 to 7. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton in new SW corner till 5 1/4 in eve and got about 420. We finished cut N of gully in morn and picked just S of it in eve.

Tue. 26th. Cloudy and chilly from NE and rained in slow sprinkles at 8 to 9 1/2 in morn and again late in eve. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton in new SW corner till 9 in morn and again nearly all eve and got 300. The rain bothered us some.

Wed. 27th. Bright, cloudy some all day - but sun shined some and no rain. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton all day in new SW corner and got about 360. Bud came late in eve for Nellie and me and we rode Hattie and Salome to Clara's after dark and Bud went and saw Dr McGehee and got some powders for Ma (she is sick with flux) and Nellie stayed there all night and came back at 11 1/2.

Thu. 28th. Bright and cool in morn and warmer in eve from E. Pa and Willie picked cotton all day in new SW corner and I picked there too after I rode to Clara's and brought Nellie home (at 8 1/2) in morn. Nellie rode Hattie and Ida went with her to Clara's in eve and Ma seemed to be better.

Fri. 29th. Bright most of day but thundered and showered around late in eve and sprinkled here at 5 to 5 1/2. Pa, Willie and I picked cotton in new SW corner till 5 in eve and rain stopped us then - we got about 330. Bud went and got Dr McGehee to come out and see Ma in morn. Nellie went there late in eve and stayed all night.

Sat. 30th. Bright and warm from the S and showered around some in eve but none here. I rode Salome and led Hattie to Clara's for Nellie early in morn and Ma is better. I drove Hattie to buggy to Cohen's at 8 3/4 to 11 3/4 in morn. Pa and Willie picked cotton on H ridge awhile in morn. Pa rode Hattie to Clara's in eve. I grabbled some potatoes and picked some peas for pigs and got some corn and wood in eve.
